We enjoyed a scallop carpaccio as well as their hamachi carpaccio and both were delicate and delicious! Great job chef! Also basic easy stuff like edamame, agedashi tofu and miso soup and one of their rolls. I believe the roll was an orange blossom.... Nice flavors and fish. Maybe a little too cold but yummy!!! Located on Memorial Drive just west of the beltway. It's in a small plaza and has adequate parking in front. The interior is decent sized and the staff are well staffed and very friendly. Their menu is a traditional Japanese spot with quite a bit of "fusion" rolls etc. kind of akin to the menu at Blue Fish etc. Our table ordered some takoyaki and seaweed salad to start; both were fine/good and as expected. We ordered some sashimi/ nigiri next; the best of the bunch was the scallop nigiri. They did not have any otoro or toro so we ordered some hamachi and salmon. The eel, and foie gras nigiri were a bit disappointing; the slice of eel was extremely thin and overcooked and not succulent at all. The foie was the same; definitely lacked flavor and seasoning compared to other spots that I've ordered it. The Uni was decent and we were told they were Japanese Uni. The rolls were not my favorite; the fusion rolls had a ton of brightly colored and overly sweet sauces and the main issue for me was all of the creme cheese inside everything. Overall, it's a decent neighborhood sushi spot that is very casual but lacks the finesse and seafood options of higher end spots. read more

We've been driving by Mamasan on Memorial since it opened up, saying we need to check it out, and finally swung by for a late lunch the other day. Parking is a little wonky if it's peak lunch or dinner hours. FYI The interior is new build shiny. They have a very well stocked bar, with maybe half a dozen bar top seats, and then about a dozen tables/booths. Service was fast and friendly. They took our order, answered questions, and brought everything out as quickly as it was being made. The chef behind the counter was also really friendly and checked on us to make sure his sushi was meeting expectation. The menu is pretty big. They must have at least 30-40 rolls on offer alone, and if you're searching for something in particular, they should have it. (no chirashi bowl though) Besides rolls and nigiri, they also offer bento boxes, hibachi plates, noodle dishes, various rice dishes, soups, salads, and the trusty kids menu. We ordered a variety of nigiri, miso soup, edamame, and a couple rolls. Everything came out quickly, well portioned and tasted great. The rice wasn't perfect if you're a sushi rice snob, but better than most mid grade sushi spots out there. Long story short, Mamasan falls somewhere between a 3 star and 4 star sushi spot depending on your expectations. If you're looking for a formal date night type sushi meal (MF Sushi, Neo, Uchi, Hidden Omakase, Kata Robata, etc.), this will fall short of your expectations. If you're looking for a clean neighborhood sushi spot that has all the various rolls, nigiri, and hot dishes you're used to, you'll be happy. I'd say Mamasan is a solid neighborhood sushi spot if you're chasing a craving and don't want to mess with Westheimer or go somewhere super formal. read more

Welcome, Mamasan Sushi! I have been so excited about this place since I saw the construction starting. It's directly across the street from my neighborhood, so each day going to and coming from work, I had a watchful eye. This space has been a several things through the years. More recently, it was a custom home builder, then a boutique clothing store. From what I could tell online, this is a location move for Mamasan Sushi. This was confirmed on our visit for lunch yesterday. I heard the waitress telling the table near us. I went with my aunt, who is not a big sushi eater, so I wasn't as experimental as I would be with a group of sushi eaters. I love having at least one other person to share rolls with and try platters. Sushi eating is not just a meal, it is an eating experience. The restaurants is nicely themed and clean. I had the spicy tuna roll, egg rolls, and hot saki. The presentation was great. My aunt had the tempura vegetables. My food was terrific, and I saw other guest orders that looked fantastic! They have a full menu including noodles, and other items for people who may not like sushi in its true form. For those who do like sushi in full, they have sashimi and other items to satisfy the craving. Prices are good. For my portion, before tip, the total bill was only $27.06. Sushi can be a pricey meal, so I thought their prices were great! The bathrooms are very clean. I will definitely be back to try more. They have booth seating, regular table and chair options, plus, the sushi bar. I much prefer to sit at the bar top for my sushi dining, but again, I was with someone who is not versed in sushi dining. Our waitress was such a joy. She was pleasant, very helpful, and just a warm energy all around. Yesterday was day 5 this new location has been open. The waitress said they've had a great welcoming and get pretty busy. I was surprised it was as busy as it was when we went. The parking is a little small. They share the tiny 3-4 business strip location with 555 Bistro (also highly recommend), but the parking can get pretty full. Nonetheless, this is not a place to miss. everything was very yummy and fresh here! we came on a friday around 9pm so it wasn't busy, but the space is a bit small so i'm sure it gets packed around dinnertime. i didn't use the bathroom but my boyfriend said it was super nice and clean. the salmon avocado and tuna avocado rolls ($8 each) were great. the crabmeat roll was very good, but i would recommend getting the pineapple sauce on the side. it was a bit overpowering. the orange blossom roll was delicious and i loved the burst of citrus flavor! the takoyaki was pretty good. our waiter was super nice and attentive at first, but when he was dropping off and picking up our check he didn't say a word to us. it was kind of weird. when we were leaving, however, the chefs and hostesses all made a point to say goodbye and thank us. three house rolls, one specialty roll, and one appetizer came out to $55 before tip. read more

The service was also wonderful, the staff were very kind and made sure we were taken care of. The atmosphere is really cute, it's a pretty small place but honestly I am so glad we stopped and gave them a try. Whoever cut the sushi for our nigiri knows what they are doing. The nigiri were perfectly cut, perfect temperature, on top of high quality rice and perfect sized. The soy sauce at the table was of good quality and didn't steal away the delicious flavor of the fish. You can tell that they really care about their food quality. I used to patron their location off of H6 and Park Row (near the Mercedes dealership.) one day I noticed they were gone, BUT I found out they moved to a beautiful location on Memorial (near Wilcrest.) the owner is so friendly and makes you feel super welcome so it was great to see her. Decided to give this restaurant a try as it is in the neighborhood. This was our first time . Everything tasted great. Server was attentive. It is a smaller sized restaurant but not a problem for a Tuesday night. Favorite roll was the Astro roll. The Mexicali roll had too much sirachi sauce. Not pictured is the gyoza which were great. Well... two days later we came back because 1) there were other things I wanted to try and 2) this is where we were when Astros won Game 5. Good food, good luck, and supporting a local business - why not? We ordered 4 things again, all different, and enjoyed everything. We even debated what we liked the most between both nights and it was hard to choose. Service top notch just like the first night - owner is attentive, nice, and makes some darn good sushi! Fried calamari 5+/5: You must be rolling your eyes, but this is not like your typical calamari rings. The fry is not breaded, more Japanese style, and is delicately crunchy. The cook of the calamari itself was perfect, but it was the taste of it all with the grilled onions that blew us away. It comes with a sweet chipotle like sauce, but the calamari was well seasoned on its own. Fair warning, there's some heat to this, but not so spicy that it's overwhelming. Dragon Eye 5/5: Another no-rice roll, just the way I like it. Pro tip - don't try to bite this in half or it'll all fall apart. Roll it around gently in the ponzu sauce and shove the whole thing in your mouth for a delicious mouthful. The shiso leaf is a great flavor note. Spicy Cilantro Roll 4/5: Not on the menu (yet) so we got to try something new. This roll has a bit of heat to it, but again not overwhelming. It was not my favorite of the night, but it was good. Inside is spicy scallop, outside seemed to be tuna and/or salmon? Since it wasn't on the menu, I forget what all was in it, but it was a decent amount of fish. Flaming Volcano 5/5: I enjoy fun presentations and this dish was on fire! Literally! Even better when it tastes good. Baked shrimp, crab, and scallop in some yummy sauce sitting abed small pieces of crab meat/avocado sushi. Salmon Nigiri 5/5: I noticed there was some citrus glaze on top - love that citrus brightness in the bight. I really have to give props to the owner for her awareness. A lot of places have TVs everywhere but just have random channels or sports games on. She knew we were there to watch the beginning of the Astros game and changed it to the game right as it started. Highly recommend Mamasan Sushi - as much as I don't want to fight a crowd, I want more people to know about this place so it can stay in business and I can selfishly have more yummy sushi. read more

The service was not the best, we waited a while to get waters but where it went really south was that we ordered a total of 3 house wines, then when the check came out they said they had ran out of house wine and served us another wine and wanted to charge us the price for the other one. We ordered 3 basic sushi rolls, then waited a full 45 minutes for our food. At 30 minutes, the waitress informed us that our food will be out "shortly", with no apologies or explanation for the wait. We then waited another 15 minutes. We almost left the restaurant before our food arrived. The kitchen seemed well staffed with multiple chefs making sushi, so I really don't understand why it took so long. The sushi itself was mediocre at best. Nothing special, and pretty small portions. We were disappointed that the restaurant did not even attempt to comp us for the wait (small free appetizer while waiting would've been nice?), or at the very least offer an apology. I don't know about anyone else, but I usually dip my sushi in soy sauce for added flavor, not here (to be fair, I did have to on the dragon eye roll, but that would be a great summer time order).
