The pupusas are the star here. Authentic and delicious. Also the torta was a pleasant surprise. The fresh ciabatta bread was perfectly grilled so that it was crispy and crunchy yet so soft. And there was a nice dressing on it which would've been perfected with a tough of cilantro. The street tacos were good but not exceptional. There aren't very many vegan or vegetarian options at most spots so I was pretty surprised to see thry actually had vegan options (vegan meat and cheese)! They had vegan tacos (with vegan meat), vegan burrito and vegan pupusas. My coworkers and I randomly stumbled upon Mami Cheli's. I had the vegan tacos and I have to say, they were pretty good! Wish they didn't put so much cilantro and onion on top but that's just my personal preference. My coworkers had the regular pupusas and seemed to really enjoy it as well. All in all I would definitely come here again. They do allow you to order online and then pick it up. I would have at least expected that they would re-heat the meat on the grill before putting it in the tortilla, but regrettably they did not. The rice, salsa, etc were pretty standard. I normally order the same thing once a week which is a chicken súper burrito, but every time I go there the burrito is getting smaller and smaller to the point that, I don't think I'm coming back. 8/7/23 , $14.24 for a súper burrito if you pay cash but if you pay with ATM or Credit card is $50 cents more. A neighborhood restaurant offering homemade Mexican and Salvadorian food. The interior atmosphere is very casual, you order at the cash register. Mami Chelis' make their own corn tortillas and fresh pupusas. However, there are not a lot of Salvadorian restaurants in this part of the Bay Area, so lower the expectations because this isn't The Mission District (different taste and/or prices). The best part of Mami Chelis is all of the vegetarian and vegan options and they even have faux meat, mushrooms and/or vegan cheese! Please businesses, if you can't get decent cuts of pork or marinade properly just don't have it on your menu. TL:DR A little pricey for pupusas, but they're good. Of the 3 pupusa places I've tried over the last week or so, Mami Cheli's sadly came in 3rd. Not to say that the food is bad - it's not - it's actually very good, but there are a couple reasons why it didn't place higher. First, the price. I'm used to pupusas being cheap eats. $3.99 obviously isn't going to break the bank, but they were the most expensive of the 3. Might have something to do with their location, but I don't love paying a premium because of a zip code and the relative income of their expected clientele. Second, the pupusas are good (I ordered revuelta because it's the best), but the amount of curtido they give you is disproportionately small. I had it delivered, so I'm not sure if they put the tomato salsa in with the bag of cabbage, but there wasn't any on its own and it wasn't very plentiful if it was mixed together because I didn't really see anything red. One pupusa was a pretty good size for a comfortably filling lunch, but I would've wanted 2 if I were making a full, satisfying meal of it. If I had to choose between this place, and the other well-reviewed pupuseria in a nearby city (that also happens to be closer to my house; not naming names), I'd unfortunately have to pass on Mami Cheli's, but if I happened to be in Menlo and needed a quick, yummy lunch, I'd have no qualms about swinging over here for a bite. read more

I'm from SoCal so I've got an idea of what excellent Mexican food is and isnt. After living and being in the SF/Daly City/Menlo Park area for 3 years I almost lost hope of not finding a go-to Mexican restaurant. I was dying and ready to give up. Then I found Mama Chellis. Always got the carne super burrito with black beans and flour tortilla. All of the ingredients just make sense and come together in a way that make you enjoy life. Brought my SoCal family here and they loved the burritos as well. Tried the pupusas (first time trying them so cant compare it to anything) and they were decent, came with a salad (?) which was very, very delicious. The food was okay, but I knew it wouldn't be fair to rate Mami Cheli's just based on that one interesting DoorDash fiasco. So, I'm staying at home and I'm reallyyy craving some Salvadoran and Mexican food. I mean..just look at their menu! It's got me dreaming. Though I usually try the vegan items w/ vegan meat, I decided to go for a simple veggie burrito. They offer pickup if you order directly from their website, and I figured pickup would be better as I have more control over the ETA and stuff. REVIEW OF THE FOOD: I got the vegetarian burrito with spinach wrap, pinto beans, guac, and salsa and green salsa on the side. The burrito itself was very basic; it was comprised of lightly flavored rice, along with roasted veggies and beans. Like another reviewer said, the flavors are more mild. It's a solid burrito, but what REALLY elevates it are the condiments/toppings: the guac, tomato salsa, and the GREEN SALSA. Oh. My. Maybe the most impressive part of my meal was the green salsa. I don't know what they put in it, but damn it really brought all the flavors together, adding a spiced kick to each bite and a complementary tang that contributed to the freshness of the veggies. Overall I'd rate the burrito alone as a 6.5/10 (just bc of the milder flavor, but that's not to say it wasn't good, it very solid), and with the additional add-ons (very easy to customize on their website), an 8/10! Go go go support local :) and try out Mami Cheli's if you haven't already. If you love Mami Cheli's, then support them more! And get that green salsa ;) read more

Our first time here we thought that $4+ price per pupusa was a little steep when other places nearby was under $3 BUT after seeing them being made it all made sense. They were delicious! Worth the price, generously filled and larger than your average pupusa. This place has a lot of small details going for it, great value, good flavors, nice staff. One of the things that impressed me most is the gloves the preparer wore. It's not common and very welcome when your meal is literally made by hand. We'll be back. read more

Always love eating here and supporting a local business. We've been coming here since they opened, and it's a very casual, clean place. Not many tables inside - we normally do carryout. We've tried pretty much everything on the menu: al pastor is definitely our favorite protein selection. Burritos and tortas have become our goto, but the quesadillas are also yummy. The tacos seem expensive but they're larger than a traditional street taco, so not a terrible deal, but a burrito would be better value in my opinion. I'm partial to the spinach wrap! Since this was my first time ordering from Mami Cheli's, I wanted to try a couple different items on the menu. I ordered the classic papusa and the al pastor taco. The papusa was definitely the star of the meal! They are perfect with the curdito on top. I ordered guacamole on the side, and I think it would be really good with sour cream, too. The al pastor taco was also really yummy. The taste reminded me of El Grullense. I chose the red salsa on the side. It is pretty spicy, so I'm glad I only put a little on top to start. While Mexican cuisine is a fairly reliable option for vegan food, it's often not particularly interesting since the veggies and sometimes beans tend to be a side thought. However, after trying most of the vegan entrees at Mami Cheli's (tacos, papusas, burrito), I was impressed by the marinade on the tacos and the options for vegan meat and a variety of vegetables. Unlike many of the reviews raving about the papusas, I thought that the vegan papusas were a bit too bland. This is especially compared to the vegan tacos, which is probably because the papusas lacked some type of seasoning on the meat. Still good, and probably one of the best options out there given that papusas aren't usually vegan, just not my favorite. One small disclaimer is that I expect this place to be somewhat controversial, since the flavors here taste a lot more home-cooked than your average Mexican restaurant. This means that the flavors might be a bit milder than some people expect or desire. I personally love it, but others who prefer stronger flavors might be unimpressed. These papusas are so dang delicious! While this started as a papusa place, there are tacos, quesadillas, burritos, and tortas. AND there are vegan options, too! I've tried a lot of burritos in the bay area and this place is my favorite. Carne asada and al pastor are both delicious, the fillings are generous, fresh, and well-balanced, and the handmade tortilla is perfect to hold it all together. The extra hot salsa is amazing, but I'd recommend getting it on the side because it is actually quite hot.
