I had been meaning to write a review after my Physical Therapy with name Steve but I had been busy trying to find a better one which I finally did at Premiere Medical Group Hawaii in Kaneohe by American Savings Bank . Her name is Janice Magdalena. Originally, My Primary Dr. Referred me to Pirco on Mapunapuna which have 4 and half star with a good reviewed. However, I live n Kapiolani and at that time most of my drs , massage therapy, Acupunture etc is all closed to where I live. So I picked Malakai O Malama which not even one block from where I live instead Pirco. I thought I'm looking something closer and convenient due to my situation. It was a Pandemic and had made appointment with Natalie. The staff never called me for appointment that I found out they were open. They had my treatment Oder from my primary dr and when I can't wait any longer I called and the lady who answered the phone finally found my name. She said Natalie is unavailable for like three weeks.?Time is running because I don't have much time otherwise the treatment will expire. So I ended up with Steve and this lady. Steve admitted he never even asked me me anything like getting information compared when I saw Natalie she was asking these lady all kinds of questions and filling some forms. The place is horrible. The bedding next to earth other . While steve asking me to do me stretched he was talking to another guy next to me all kinds of stories which made very distraction. It was the worst physical therapy I ever encountered. This Haole guy is unfriendly and even yell at you. There is a lot more to say but I stopped here because it was wasted of time and money from the insurance. If I'm the one paying I will never spend nothing on this place. My PT with Janice Magdalena is excellent. Only me and her in a huge room with nice atmosphere compared the latter. She gave me all kind s of different exercises even traction. They have a large space and nice equipment. I even get electrode with heating pad. It's worth it even though it was too far away. I highly recommend her. She's very professional. read more

The feeling here is one hard to describe in words. Peaceful, comfortable, and caring are the vibes. And not just from Dr Zunin but the other doctors and staff too. I never experienced a doctor who truly cared, truly wanted to see me healthy in the best way suited for me until I met Dr Zunin, his beautiful wife Alia who does acupuncture here and the others members of the Manakai O Malama Ohana. Since he moved to Manakai O Malama, I have arrived twice in the past year to find either that my doctor was not available or I "didn't have an appointment". I owe my life to Scott Acree. My regular PCP for many years has diagnosed me with "WHITE COAT SYNDROME". It's an old wives tale that states your blood pressure rises whenever you are around Drs., hence "white coat". Well while for more than 30yrs he kept sayingvthat. In the mean time, my kidneys were dying from high blood pressure. I was sent to Scott to handle my on-going pain issues in my shoulders and neck. After just 2 visits, Scott suggested I start taking BP meds in which he prescribed. Well, the damage was done from my PCPs neglect. I was diagnosed with CRONIC KIDNEY DISEASE stage 3. If Scott had not put me on BP meds, I would now be on Diaylsis. My BP has now been perfect for several yrs because of Scott. My kidneys are stable again, becuae of my HERO. read more

Do not recommend unless it's specifically for physical or occupational therapy reasons. I -had- to visit Manakai after an emergency room visit due to my previous primary physician passing away at the time. This was due to some odd heart palpitations I was having. First visit was with doctor Carolyn Candido. I understand that my visit was squeezed into her schedule, but if that was the case I wish they would have turned me down instead. She seemed extremely rushed throughout the visit (making simple mistakes like calling my wrist 'ankle'...) and didn't really give me a helpful diagnosis at all, literally looked at my charts and just told me 'nothing looks wrong, just try some of these breathing exercises'. Rushed out of the office without even properly scheduling a followup appointment right after. 3 days later, I collapsed on an airplane due to (what seems to have been an anxiety attack). For obvious reasons, breathing exercises definitely DID NOT help. Second visit (I was SUPER reluctant but still finding a new primary physician) was due to above mentioned event, and I was seen by Nellie Cruz (Physician assistant?). Once again, she pretty much just conveyed what was written on the charts to me without really listening to the issues I had at all with 'everything looks okay'. I now have a different primary doctor (MUCH BETTER) and I would never want to come back here unless it was for something else that they seem to be better at. It looks like the good reviews are all related to acupuncture and different types of therapy. Gave 2 stars since the facility itself was nice, staff was generally nice, and again, might be specialized in other services. read more

I was referred to the clinic for physical therapy & had the pleasure of working with Steve. He is great at what he does. I saw him 2-3 weekly for 3 months, so I have been exposed to the other PT's, OT's as well as Scott (medical doctor) I was extremely impressed. They are all knowledgeable, patient oriented, hold you accountable & are willing to help with our road to recovery anyway they can. Steve went on vacation for a week, as I was seen by another provider (Lea) & my level of service did not change. With each & every appointment I was always seen on time & felt as though I did the work needed for my recovery. I had to have a knee replacement later on in 2019 & asked my military provider to make sure this was my clinic of choice. Thank you to the PT & OT staff for everything you did to help me heal. Seeing Manakai have only 3 stars kind of mind baffles me to be honest! After experiencing some pretty frightening numbness & tingling in my hands, arms & legs, I made an appointment at Manakai, since I was also looking for a PCP. Their information was easy to find online. I called and had to wait a while for my appointment day, but that was no problem since I was traveling for work. Their office is located in the Honolulu Club building on Ward Avenue, so parking is a cinch since they have their own structure and there's a lot of street parking around too. I went in, checked in, waited and was seen by Scott Acree. I told him what was going on AND unlike the doctors at Urgent Care, he walked through all potential possibilities and had me set up for a referral! He said he wanted to rule everything out. I love that he didn't talk to me like I was stupid or like nothing was wrong with me. He gave me a bunch of very interesting handouts and ways to prevent sickness and things I could do to remedy common sicknesses. Today, when I went back to have my blood labs back, Scott was very helpful and informative and explained to me everything that I had gotten my labs on. He also recommended a doctor when I told him I was planning on relocating to Kauai. I love this place! Scott is the best doctor I've ever had. read more

Super disappointed in their service. I called and asked to schedule an appointment, was told they would call me back in 10-15 minutes. I never received a call back, so I called back. I believe the office girls name was Taylor, she said she gave me a call and left a message. She had not, but continued to argue with me, she said that my issue was something for urgent care. Even though I literally just needed to sit down with a nurse for 5 minutes. I personally feel like they didn't want to do their jobs today. My issue is not an urgent care issue, it's a clinic issue. I honestly don't even think she asked a nurse. I've established this clinic as my primary care and boy what mistake that was, and an absolute waste of my time and energy. I have a time sensitive urgent wound on my hand and had an appointment set up prior to coming to this office. I waited for nearly 2 hours and never got seen until I had brought up that I was going to get lawyers involved if I wasn't seen. Everyone in the reception room was saying how they couldn't wait for people to leave and be done for the weekend. I felt neglected and uncomfortable. By the time I was done the lights were off and janitors were starting to clean.. On top of that the prescription I had didn't have enough info from the doctor so I'm unable to pick up my pain medication for my injury. Hands down (no pun intended) one of the WORST medical experiences I've ever had. read more

Dr. Zunin is a hilarious character. He seems straight out of a sitcom; as the guy whom decent human beings just roll their eyes at. I was recommended to see him from a friend when I told them my current Primary Care Physician was closing shop. Not only was the wait over 2 hours past my appointment time, as others have said, but the environment reeked of pretentiousness. If it were not for the warm-hearted nurse who takes your vitals in the beginning of your visit, the visit would have been an entire disaster. As I'm finally called into this Zunin's office that overlooks Kaka'ako, I can't help but notice his 20-30 framed awards right above his desk. Really? All of them deserve frames and recognition? Even that class participation one in the corner? Of course they do.. Okay, fine. Let me just look past those for now. I have a pretty bad back that needs addressing. As we are trying to figure out where the source of the problem is, he's googling images on his computer to show me a diagram of the back. He continues to explain what are the possible problems as I'm just nodding along and agreeing (I'm not an MD, I'll take your word for it). As he wraps up his sales pitch, he says, "What do you think?" "Sounds great, we'll follow your instincts and take those steps." He replies, "It's not instincts, I mean look." Zunin points to the previously mentioned wall of Microsoft Office typed & printed awards. (Stop. Wait. No. He didn't just do that. That's way too comical to be real!) At this point, I'm counting the seconds until I can leave. I get hit with a co-payment for this second-coming-of-god's 10 minute speech. Then just received another payment in the mail for the same appointment. Hilarious! Don't worry. I'll pay the $40 to never step foot in "High Maka Maka Medical Center" ever again. I'm seriously bummed about Manakai O'Malama... My husband broke his back and went to Manakai O'Malama, his primary care physician the following day after a visit to the orthopedic surgeon. The doctors looked up our insurance coverage on their computer, in front of both of us and told my husband that if they prescribed massage, acupuncture and PT through them that our insurance company would cover all services, 8-10 sessions depending on the service (except of course for the copay)... now they are billing us for the acupuncture and massage saying, OOPS! They got it wrong and we aren't covered for massage and acupuncture! When I called Denise in accounting to let her know that I found it an extremely unethical practice, borderline malpractice, to tell someone that the service that they offer is covered then charge them because it is not covered, she offered to set up a payment plan. When I asked her to put herself in our shoes - my husband broke his back (crushed vertebrae) and was in extreme pain when he went to them trusting that the medical staff knows what they are taking about when they look up the insurance information on their computer, she said she wouldn't be in our shoes because she has read her insurance book and knows exactly what is offered and what isn't. WHAT??? She must have a GREAT memory. I can't even believe the dishonesty. Not very zen in my opinion. read more

My experience with Dr.Zunin is very similar to Miss B posting, he does not like alot of discussion, and can be very condescending when asked for clarifications. Dr. Zunin has that"God like complex" and assumes your complete trust in him and concludes you don't require explanations or choice regarding medical assessments or treatments. I was kept waiting one hour past my appointment time and when he finally did see me, he ate his lunch while treating me , talking with his mouth full. Dr. Zunin also complained I asked too many questions at one time, definitely not a multitasker. Dr. Zunin is a Jerk and should be avoided at all costs!!! read more

**Warning** Do not waste your time. Worst service ever. Started with my appt., that they lost, then blamed me for being wrong, until half hour later, when they realized they made a mistake, then tried to act nice. The whole reception area is very unorganized. Not feeling confident in the receptionists, and feeling I'd experience more scheduling problems, I chose to change my Physical Therapy to another clinic. My intuition was right. For the past 3 days, I've called over 10 times just for them to send the request to another clinic. I've left 4 messages, no response, no returned call. I've called 5 other times, and requested it be changed, each time someone answers, it's like they've never heard the request before, they say they'll call me back when they figure it out...still haven't received a call. There's also been countless times where I've called and they haven't answered at all, and I chose not to leave a message, as they don't return those anyway. Not sure what the problem is, is it the Doctor holding it up, or is the message not getting to him, either way, not professional, at least return the call to ensure progress is being made. I know everybody's job can be stressful and busy at times, but this is unacceptable for a business. Seems like a racket to me, not wanting me to go to another physical therapy clinic. Update: Reception area still horrible. Been waiting for my referral letter to see an orthopedic specialist, I've got the approval from the doctor, but the staff has not forwarded the paperwork. It's been 4 weeks, I've left numerous messages, all which have not been returned. Gone down to the office, but the lady who handles the referral paperwork just so happened to be out of the office. Staff stated that they'd get the message to her, haven't received any feedback. The orthopedic specialist office has also been calling Manakai o Malama, and they haven't called them back either. I am not happy with this place. I followed Acree here from Tripler and I get cortisone shots from him. That is literally all I get here. I've been a patient here for almost a year and you'd think they would know that all I am here for are cortisone shots. I can confirm that Dr. Zunin is not a nice guy and has a god complex. While waiting I was studying for my physical therapy degree. So he asked me what I was doing and I told him. He literally scoffed at me!!! I can also confirm I have heard the receptionist talking bad about the patients and they literally do nothing to help you. And today was the worse. I came early for My shots and literally had to wait an hour past time appointment time. Acree kept taking people before me who did NOT have appointments. When I finally went into his office I got ignored so he could make notes on other patients charts. Which I'm pretty sure is a violation of the HIPPA law. Finally got my shots and left. But I am extremely unhappy with how I've been treated here. read more

Had a zoom visit with Dr. Levy. He billed the insurance as the wrong type of visit, didn't write the correct prescription, refused to issue the correct prescription afterward, his office staff had poor communication and followups, and he was very unprofessional during the visit itself. If any one or two of these things had happened as stand-alone issues, I wouldn't be writing a review, but the fact that basically every part of the process was a negative experience made me want to warn others against making the same mistake by choosing this provider. read more

I edited this review with a few points: 1. Dr. Zunin is truly as awful as mentioned in earlier posts. He is rude, condescending and made me cry the first time I met him because of how demeaning he was to me. If I had only seen him, I would have definitely given this review 1 star. He really needs to consider running the business remotely and should not deal with clients. He lacks any sort of compassion or empathy and definitely is a full-blown narcissist. There is also another female PA who is very condescending as well. She told me that I essentially needed to just "get over" my pain which is both inconsiderate and unhelpful and incredibly unprofessional. There really is nothing worse than judgmental doctors. These two providers have clearly never been in chronic pain. Also, I think it is true that Dr. Zunin does try to milk money out of clients. The reason I didn't give this review 1 star is because I was lucky enough to see the PA, Scott Acree and get to know some of the nurses there, and with just them, it would have been 5 stars for sure! 2. Aside from Dr. Zunin and the one other female PA, I absolutely loved this clinic. If you are going to go to the clinic- SEE SCOTT ACREE, PA. Him and most of the nurses working there are AMAZING! I went there after getting into a bad accident in 2015 and he seriously saved my life both physically and emotionally. I have never been to a more compassionate and effective doctor's office before in my life (in regards to Scott). Scott is kind, patient and most importantly, very knowledgable. He never makes you feel like he is too busy to talk to you and is so understanding and empathetic. I went there for my PCP, massage and chiropractic and not only did they help me with my recent accident, but they have also fixed back problems I have had for years. I waited over an hour for an appointment that never happened... you know how I HATE waiting... I was told I needed to make an appointment to re-do a treatment plan, that EXPIRED on July 8, 2018... strangely I learned about the treatment plan 10 days prior to its expiration, called the adjuster to try to get an extension but without success... FAILURE on so many levels, my care at Manakai since your "departure" has been less than par ... you are my Dr on record, shall I find another primary Dr? I don't know if you realize that your attempt to cut back on your office time is not working for me as a patient. ... just wondering how to proceed from today! As a new patient I've been very impressed with this practice. They have a wide variety of professionals. I've met with Dr Zunin a few times, he seems very knowledgable, caring and professional. I have a variety of medical issues, he's kept good track of all of them. I've had a sleep study and recommendations to deal with sleep issues. He set me up with an occupational therapist that is working with me to help with lifestyle issues that can help my overall health. I'm pleased. read more

This review is for Dr. Landon Opunui. Today was my second appointment with him regarding a work injury. I was referred to this clinic due to my primary physician not taking worker's comp. I came in to get some wording fixed on my previous notes, which stated that I was not having any symptoms, which I actually was. From the minute I walked into his office, I felt a little uncomfortable with his demeanor, and it proved to be right. I stated I was still having numbness and lack of mobility at the site of injury and needed it notated, and also to see if there was anything we could do for it or if it would stay like this, I also needed it to be noted as an MMI (Maximum Medical Improvement). I told him that's all I needed to my knowledge for now and I jokingly stated how frustrating all this workers comp stuff was and how I've been having to take off of work. He then stated "I don't work for the military nor do I care about that part, Im just here for the workers comp part." Well... This whole visit is about paperwork and follow ups regarding my required documentation for the military right? (Im DOD). Makes me feel like I'm just easy money. Then he states that my numbness and lack of mobility wasn't CLEARLY expressed to him on the last visit. I did state that I felt numbness and couldn't move my finger right on the initial visit. I guess that wasn't clear enough? I was not blaming him nor insinuating anything, all I came there for was to get this corrected. I asked if there was something I said or did because I felt that he was being short with me, to that he replied that I didn't know what I needed out of my appointment and I needed to be clearer. MY FINGER IS NUMB AND CANT MOVE PROPERLY, what isn't clear about that? Also while attempting to voice my concern about this weird interaction, I was just abruptly cut off with "see you in two weeks". I felt brushed off and uncared for, nothing I've ever experienced ever within any medical facility or during any treatment ever. This isn't something trivial or minor, it has to do with my health and wellbeing, and to be treated with such shortness and lack of compassion is uncalled for. However, on the plus side, the front desk staff as well as the nurses are super helpful and extremely nice. They make me smile, even after fuming while leaving his office. They are the only reason for not leaving 1 star, I would give 5 stars just for them if I could. I scheduled my next appointment with another doctor there to try and give it another shot, hopefully it will be better. read more

On 9/19/2017 I was in my third motor vehicle collision, where someone rear ended me on my way home from work and while I did not take an ambulance to an ER. I did have to go to the ER later that evening. I would have to say, that was not the best way to spend one's birthday but at least it wasn't fatal for either party. At the ER I was recommended to go to Manakai O malama due to my PCP not accepting no fault insurance. I called them on the 20th and got accepted to see a physician on the 21st. While I was grateful for the quick turn around time, I disliked the unprofessionalism going on in the receptionist area. I had clearly never been there before and upon checking in they did not clearly instruct on what to do until, one person heavily sighed at me and told me next time I have to sign in every time I come in. As if I should have known that, like it was obvious what that sign in page was for. By the way, there isn't a sign for that there. If you don't know to do that someone isn't just going to assume that it's for that. It looks like you could be signing up for a newsletter... What was also seemed unprofessional was the amount of HIPAA going around. While they did not explicitly state anyone's names you could guess who they were talking about or they said the patients names super loud while on the phone, then complained to their coworkers right after. Yes, I understand patients can be difficult even at the best of times. But be aware of your surroundings! There were so many people present. I work in a hospital too and it was terrible. Everyone talks but that was ridiculous. After that one time, I didn't notice it occur again... but I also didn't come in again during their peak hours or when it was super busy. My appointments always ended up being later in the evening or at weird different times than everyone else. I'm grateful that they had these types of hours that worked for me. Especially since with my company I did not qualify at the time for FMLA or anything else. What is their saving grace is their amazing therapists and doctors. I saw Dr. Levy as my main physician who instructed me to see a physical therapist and massage. We then went from these two thing to chiropractor. These three in combination really helped heal my back. While my MVC wasn't terrible to my car it was damaging to my back muscle according to the chiropractor Cara. Between the three of them and the amazing exercises I learned from the physical therapist I know my back is still healing and continues to do so. I just have to keep up with it. Yes, it still randomly spasms but over time that too will end. But if it wasn't for the awesome team here at manakai o malama it wouldn't happen. Oh don't let me forget to mention Nemphae - I totally spelled her name wrong and the head receptionist/nurse person, I'm sorry I forgot her name. There was a time where I received no call what so ever and I was told that they left messages on my cell phone for a cancellation for one of my appointments. I showed them my phone... none and I even restarted my phone, they apologized instead of the others who kept calling me a liar. I didn't appreciate that. I would have liked to know I could have saved 45 min and $10. But I'm the liar because there was no call... still going to give them four stars although if I could give half a star it truly is about a 3.5 stars. Sorry about the TMI guys but I feel in this scenario it is best to tell a story, in this case my own. To say why I loved this place. Favorite massage therapist is Noel (female). Favorite physical therapist is Steve but to be honest I only saw him :/ but I heard they are all awesome! Lea is awesome too. There is only one chiropractor. read more

Dr. Zunin and the staff that he has is great. I haven't seen anyone's office that has so many things. The few visits that I've had with Dr. Zunin have been great. He listened to what my problem was, had me take tests as soon as possible, and then got me physical and occupational therapy. Hillary for OT and Scott for PT. They're awesome! Then he had me do a womanly check up with his assistant who is no longer there but she was great. He even had me do a blood test just to see if there was anything to know and he was the first person to tell me I have something that could possibly affect the baby if I were to have another one and if my partner had the same genetic thing. Dr. Scott who is now the assistant doctor is great. He tells it like it is but does actually care and tries to find ways to help under any circumstance. He is the first doctor to ever tell me that there is a shot that could help me with my asthma, allergies, and eczema. I sometimes think that I wouldn't have known these things if I haven't gone to them. The staff in the front are usually always helpful and very nice. read more

For workplace injuries, this place is the best. It's a one-stop shop. They have chiropractic treatment, massage therapy, physical therapy and I think, also acupuncture. I have always received thorough medical advice and treatment at this office. In addition to traditional prescriptions, x-rays etc., their advice includes such things as yoga, meditation, supplements, etc. They are punctual and polite. If you are uncertain as to whether your injury is work related, they will guide you, be it to file a claim or not to. In my case, it was not to file since it could be just irritate by work not caused by work. read more

I wish I could rate Ira Zunin a NO star!!! In my opinion, I can't believe he's a doctor!My opinion, he should go back to where he came from! Very rude, horrible person, and didn't even care to find out why I was there. I've never met such a cold, cruel, judgmental, rude, the list goes on.... I will never step foot in that office AGAIN! The front desk girls were pleasant. In my opinion,he just ruins the business reputation and should consider another profession!!! In my opinion again, he is in the WRONG field. Nobody "loves" going to the doctor's office. We go because we are hurt or sick. I was hurting and Dr Opunui seriously listened. He is very humble and helpful like a true friend, although one that actually knows about medicine. He is a great resource, and has been more responsive than I would ever ask for or expect from a doctor. I feel very fortunate to have found someone that I trust and who seriously has my best interests in mind. Thanks Doc! read more

This is my 3rd review as usual this place rocks, from the receptionist to the doctors, recently I had to go because my back was acting up, so I got the injections into my back plus the pain meds and next week I will start with the acupuncture twice a week for 4 weeks. When I went in I was sore, but when I came out I had some relief, now with the acupuncture I will have more relief. The best part of the acupuncture is that after they insert the needles I usually go right to sleep and get a little nap. I think that by now I am spoiled by the great service that I get from this facility. Keep up the excellent work. read more

I have been going to this facility for years and I have noticed a decline in service for over a year, all the good receptionist have gone. Today I call for an appointment, I get hung up on twice and when I confront the girl she gives me attitude. needless to say I make the appointment drop everything so I can get there on time, I get there early about 1/2 hour or so I thought, I wait for my appointment and then it's late so ok I understand and then find out that instead of 245 like the girl told me the appointment was for 345 no way I misunderstood because I always repeat the time and the receptionist confirms the time. I'm with previous reviewers, along with a procedure claimed on my visit notes that was not done, nor required (I checked with HMSA to see if they had been charged for the false procedure....they had not). He also prescribed me to see another in-house professional, though I thought it not related to my symptoms. I was to see her about 5 days later, so I checked Zunin's website to see if there was any information on this associate. None. I don't want to see someone without full disclosure of credentials, etc. I cancelled. Zunin is a classic example of all what's wrong with medicine today. Nothing in his self-disclosures on what inspired his chosen profession had anything to do with wanting to help people. More about financial considerations. This office practice dovetails into another problem with medicine today: insurance. Both are huge wheels with slow, meshing cogs, making difficult for change at the expense of the patient. No wonder folks are going alternative (Zunin's claim as alternative is misleading: his wife may be an acupuncturist and he may sell vitamins, but that doesn't make the office alternative at all). read more

Christopher "Scott" Acree my savior. Scott is the PA here and has saved my life. I have been to many Drs throughout my life and not a single one has ever told me that I have very high blood pressure, high cholesterol and pre-diabetic. For years I was a ticking time bomb at 59. Besides treating me for pain intervention, he took it upon himself to tackle these problems to. After prescribing multiple medicines to treat these "Killers" and mutiple blood test to track the progress, he also was able to discover I have chronic kidney disease. I will soon be treated for this ailment also. If not for his persistents, I would be a dead man. I can't begin to thank him enough for my extended lease on life.
