First of all, I never have written a review In my life. But I am so upset this is all I can do. So...Doctor Zunin treated me for five months and made me see him every two weeks when all he did was refill my prescriptions and not once examined me. I asked him many times to help me find out the root of my problem and my chronic pain but he never even answered my questions. He literally ignored me as if I said nothing. At one time he did tell me that I talk too much. I was literally crying in his office and he never even looked up. He had me spend a lot of money on a sleep lab which is in his office that he owns and the results were inconclusive. So I did it again and the second time they were also inconclusive. This is because they woke me up at 4 o'clock in the morning and told me to go home. The sleep reports said on both occasions that I did not have enough sleep time. He is of course charging me and my insurance every penny. He did refer me to almost every specialist in his office even a geriatric doctor and I am in my 40s. However, I did get a lot of help from OT Hilary Valentine and loved Psych Aimee McCullough. They are wonderful ladies and unfortunately I will not be seeing them anymore because I refuse to give Dr Zunin my business. The sad part is that he really won't even know I'm gone! He never knew my name, Answered his cell phone while I was sitting in my 5 minute "exam" and literally ignored my questions about my health condition. His office is run like an assembly line, that he likes to call a one stop shop. I really felt like they were in the insurance scam business, focusing on automobile claims and workers compensation. Dr. Zunin is so full of himself, with a God-like complex and self-proclaimed celebrity status it is heart breaking that he calls himself a doctor. His face is plastered all over his office In case you forget what he looks like. He is the Donald Trump of Medicine...except I believe that Donald Trump would have more compassion than this guy. He never cared about my health. Never asked me how I felt. Never ran blood work, Probably because they don't offer that service at his office. And as I said, he won't even notice I'm gone because he never noticed I was there. read more

Absolute worst patient care from a medical practice I have ever received! On a recent trip, I forgot to put my nasal mask in the bag when I packed my CPAP machine. I did not sleep well at all that first night without the CPAP since I started the CPAP therapy at the end of 2013. I found a San Diego office where I could purchase a replacement mask, but they needed a prescription, so I called Manakai O'Malama first thing in the morning (Hawaii time) to explain my situation and request a fax of the prescription to the San Diego office. I spoke to Keahi, and she said the Dr. had just arrived and she would have him sign the prescription. After repeated calls throughout the day, and false assurances that they would fax the prescription before the San Diego office closed at 5 (Pacific time), the fax was NEVER sent. Here's part of an email I then sent to Manakai that evening: "If you cannot fax the prescription by Thursday morning, please let me know so I can move to alternate plans for getting my nasal mask. I have to say that it was extremely frustrating for me today to keep waiting for the prescription to be faxed, and at the end of the day, to be put on hold for nearly 30 minutes when I last called your office at 2:00 HST today, while I was waiting in the Sleep Data office! The Sleep Data office closed at 5:00 PDT today, and stayed open late to keep waiting for the fax to arrive. I gave up and hung up at 5:27, tired of waiting for the person who put me on hold. I do not understand what the problem is in your office to not have this prescription faxed today, when I first called at approximately 8:00 HST this morning, and as I kept calling throughout the day to no avail. " No response received. I will NEVER return to Manakai O'Malama and I will report this situation to HMSA and Tricare in hopes they will not refer new patients to them. read more

Extremely unhappy with the service and care provided at this clinic. The first time I came I saw dr Wong and she was nice enough. Seems like she didn't enjoy working there and quit soon after. Next visit was for a stomach ache. First thing I didn't like is when the receptionists said good morning to the dr (Ira), he blatantly ignored them and did not acknowledge their greeting. If you treat your employees this poorly, how will you treat your patients? Next I waited nearly 95 minutes for a visit. I was sick and not in the mood to wait. But wait I did. When I got into the doctors office (Ira) he was just plain always. Asking me about my jewelry and nationality instead of my aliments. Next he said I should go see their dietitian who costs upwards of $200/hour. Unnecessary. He put me on a "diet change" to eliminate foods that might be causing my sore stomach. When I checked out I was delighted to find that the "diet" he put me on consisted of shakes and you had to buy the protein powder (which his employees said tasted horrible). I was too ill to deal with it and just gave them my debit card. A $12 doctor visit turned into $72. I was very upset but I was sick and didn't have the energy to debate it. I planned on coming back and returning the powder when I felt better. Before I had the chance to return it my throat was hurting very bad so I reluctantly made another appointment. Upon check in, nobody registered me or asked for my info, so I just sat there, sick, and waited. Finally a nurse asked if I had been helped and I said no. She took me in for vitals and I told her my story of dissatisfaction and how I wanted to return the powder. She said she would talk to the administration about it. Next I saw the doctor (Rebecca) who was a lot more comfortable than Ira. She was nice and wrote me a prescription for "magic mouthwash" and I was excited to get medication and finally be relieved of my excruciating pain. I got back to the front desk to check out and the ladies said they didn't know anything about the powder but they could call a supervisor. I felt quite ill and did not want to deal with it. The biggest problem comes when I try to pick up my prescription that was written incorrectly. The pharmacy informed me the doctor didn't write the doses (incomplete script) and they would call her for more info. Well that was at 11:00 and I'm laying here writhing in pain at 7pm when my boyfriend informs me that he made yet another trip to the pharmacy and the doctor had not called back and the prescription is unavailable. Go see this doctor if: 1) you want to pay for parking (validation doesn't cover it) 2) you want to wait an hour for your appointment 3) you want to be nickeled and dimed and upsold things you don't need 4) you want incorrectly written prescriptions I would have been better off going to the free clinic read more

After many frustrating days trying to schedule appointment here, I finally got in with Dr. Opunui. I must say from start to finish this was in my opinion The WORST treatment experience ever. It was so humbug to get appointment then I had to wait forever because doctor was late. Then he rushed through the visit while trying to push some homeopathic bs on me. He not even a real doctor. I saw Dr Zunin for a number of different issues over a period of a couple of years. His diagnoses were wrong more often than they were right. I don't pretend that I'm as knowledgeable as a trained physician, but I do research my own health carefully, and am fully capable of understanding medical journals, etc. When I make a suggestion to a doctor, there's some basis for it. But Zunin generally dismissed my suggestions (which often turned out to be correct) with great condescension and eye-rolling. If you read a lot of these reviews you'll find that this is a frequent complaint. Sure, many physicians get tired of people reading stuff on the internet and expecting their doctor to take everything they say seriously. I get it. But Zunin really does think he's a lot smarter than he is, and it gets old. If he were a fantastic doctor I'd put up with it, but he's just not. Example: Pain in my lower back. He said I had arthritis, and ordered an x-ray. The x-ray showed no arthritis. He suggested a cortisone shot. I declined and asked for physical therapy. Since I had my own physical therapist and wouldn't be using his, he was irritated, but prescribed it. The physical therapy eventually resolved the problem. Example: Pain in my hip. He said it was arthritis and ordered an x-ray. I told him I was pretty sure it was a soft tissue problem and wanted an MRI. He said no, x-ray. X-ray it is. No arthritis. My physical therapist thought it might be a torn labrum. Next time I see Zunin I mention the possibility of a torn labrum. He scoffs and says that's not possible. I make the mistake of asking how it would appear if I happened to have a torn labrum, and he says oh, it would be completely different. I again ask for an MRI. He resists, but eventually agrees. MRI result: torn labrum. Example: Pain in my shoulder. He has me use his occupational therapist. She's very nice but after several weeks her therapy doesn't help, and to her credit she tells me she doesn't think she can help me. I find a shoulder specialist who immediately diagnoses frozen shoulder, and I get a procedure that fixes it completely. I could go on. Many people go to his clinic because he advertises his practice as "integrative" and using Eastern and Western modalities. I'm not extreme in any direction, but I was surprised to discover that not only doesn't he know very much about treatment that isn't standard Western medicine but he's not even very interested in it--he's much more likely to dispense the conventional medication than other doctors I've seen. Got an ache? Get a cortisone shot. That sort of thing. I'm sorry to say that the whole "integrative medicine" story is a fantasy he seems to have created as a marketing tool (he has an MBA). It seems to work for him. It didn't work for me. read more

Unfortunately, this Dr has ruined the therapists (in his office) reputation because of his attitude. He feels he is superior to others and has the right to make a young man cry and "dismiss" him. He doesn't do anything but type into his computer ... No physical whatsoever. His attitude to patients is that he is smarter and can treat people with disrespect, humiliation and demean them. Even when I tried to talk to his office manager, I was told (the next day) that he is NOT apologizing and we can make a new appt! Having 3 appointments, we waited over an hour for each (with NO communication that he was late). No apology was EVER made for the wait. Now after making a formal complaint to HMSA, his office refuses access to records and literally gives zero response from phone messages and emails. Do NOT give this person your time or money, you can get treated better as a homeless person. read more

The second review by Kris O. made it obvious to me as to who the doctor was, the owner with a condescending, supercilious attitude, a mind set superceded only by the obvious profit motive dancing in his eyes. The review by Namahana S. hit it right on the head: the medical competence regarding therapy is on the low side. In my case, I was prescribed a medication that my medical history clearly precluded. The rest of the staff is wonderful, don't get me wrong, but the business model of this "integrative medical clinic" is geared to separate you from your wallet. The owner/physician will maneuver you into paying for a multitude of cures ranging from massages to nerve point injections to acupuncture to natuopathy to herbalism (see the pic of his pills for sale) to aroma therapy. You name it, he's got it. After spending more than I could afford, on treatments that didn't work, the owner then had the effrontery to try to get me to assign him as my primary physician - trying to steal me from the physician who recommended me to him in the first place as a "pain management" specialist! He also has a weekly column in the paper. Whatever this "professional" says in his articles, just remember: he's in it for the money. read more

Dr Zunin and his staff have always been there for me for routine checkups, as well as anything that might have popped up over the years. Dr. Zunin has always been able to clearly explain to me what is going on with my health, and either prescribe proper action and medication, or refer me to a proper specialist when needed. I had a gift certificate which was not signed by an authorized person. I arrived 10 minutes late. Yes my fault. So my hour massage was only half hour. The massage was good, but not great. After my massage was done, I was putting my bra back on and....hi! A camera was pointing right at me inside the room! I did not bring that up. But my masseuse was trying to say I had a lot of tension in certain areas so that I can come back. No thanks. Then, I get a bill for almost $4. I call them and ask what it is for. They said tax. I told them I used a gift certificate and thought everything was included? They pardoned the bill. But, isn't that just weird? Never going back. read more

Dr. Zunin is great. Good bedside manner, thorough. Front office and administration could use a little work. Everyone is friendly, but not very efficient and they don't follow though. Was instructed to get past medical records. Did so. Followed up w old physician who confirmed they were sent. Asked Zunin's office about it and was told we will check and get back to you. Nobody got back to me. Was in for an appointment, asked again. Was told, someone will get back to you. Nobody has gotten back to me. On multiple occasions have called and put on hold wo anyone touching base. Just left on hold. Most recent was today. Called to change an appointment... simple right? No follow up, no research, no need to check w the physician on anything or look up a record. Just need to change my appointment. Was on hold for almost 10 minutes, so gave up and hung up. I get that they get busy, but people just want to know they aren't forgotten and patients want to know they aren't just cattle being prodded through. So a quick "Thanks for holding. There a quite a number of people up front right now. Can you give me a few more minutes?" would have been helpful and left me feeling less irritable and dismissed. A good medical practice is not just about the physician(s). With the difficulty in navigating insurance and the process of getting and maintaining good medical care, the support staff matters too. read more

At this place you are guaranteed to wait. I've never had an appointment that started on time. I was once forced to wait an hour, which made me late getting back to work. No explanation given, no apology from anybody. I was pretty much ignored the entire time. I've also had the physician cancel twice on me in the relatively short time that I've been going to this place. The reception is poorly staffed and operated by snarky unprofessionals. It's rare that anybody answers the phone. Leave a message and they won't call you back. In fact, it's up to you to follow-up. The physician I see is friendly, but loves to hear himself talk way more than listening to what his patients have to say about their medical treatment. It's also patently obvious that he doesn't review his patients' files in-depth beforehand; he just kind of wings it during the appointment, and then makes you feel rushed the entire time. I've finally had enough of this place and am switching providers. read more

I love Dr. Zunin. He has been so nice to me. Some patients complain about this, that, and the other thing. If your experience is not what you had planned, find another doctor. When I go in I am happy with a quick appointment. I think that's why we get along. It seems that some yelpers complain when he is brisk with them. The one thing that I will agree with is he makes no effort to see patients in a timely manner. I felt the same way. Sketchy and disorganized is the best way to describe my experience here. - they called me to schedule an appointment -- I was expecting to hear from a PT office to start treatment so this didn't surprise me however, they were confused when on the phone, complained the office was too loud and they couldn't hear me, weren't sure what my insurance was (makes no sense -- they received my contact info from my insurance company). - arrived at office for appointment and waited 30+ minutes to be called up, only to learn they weren't sure why I was there and STILL kept confusing my insurance status. - refused to treat me but promised to call later that day once they sorted out the problem -- I never got that call - I later received a recorded message alerting me of charges for a missed appointment! They'd obviously failed to note I did show for the appointment but was not treated because of their own error. Many others in the waiting room were unhappy with wait time or because they too were experiencing the disorganization. When I was called back, I was called back along with another patient, a complete stranger. Both of us were uncomfortable with this situation -- imagine reviewing medical history and personal info with a complete stranger, who is not your provider, in the room! Very unprofessional. The other patient waited on the other side of the curtain since I'd been waiting longer -- still not too private but kind of that patient. I found the admin staff and medical assistant to be very clueless - it was so uncomfortable I'll not return for care here. read more

After seeing several doctors, Dr. Zunin is the best doctor on this island who I have been going to for over ten years. He is very experienced and knowedgeable and there is always continuity. Very professional staff that was happy to help. Went in to schedule my first ever acupuncture. They answered all of my questions and didn't make me feel like I was bothering them. I'm looking forward to trying out the sleep clinic. It's good to know that Manakai O malama offers so many programs. Mental health, physical therapy, sleep and weight loss programs, pain management and more. The parking was fine. They have a parking garage or across the street had lots more places parking. I was out sourced to this facility by the military for a sleep study. I was told to call and schedule an appointment. That ordeal was a pain, after calling the telephone number, emailing, and private chatting with the website. 3 months later I was finally scheduled an appointment for a Saturday night at 8pm. The person making the appointment said I would get an email and phone calls for parking and directions. That email and call never came. I had to do my own research to figure all it out. So here it is night of appointment, and I have to ask parking guy how to get there office. Then I call the number for their sleep tech and get no response. I am currently sitting outside of the office waiting to be seen. Still no answer for d it said to call for sleep tech no one coming to check for me. This a real pain the behind. I am wasting a Saturday extremely poor service. If not for the fact that the military gives.me no choice to where to go I would.nevwr come back here extremely poor service. I found this facility on my insurance website, the reviews were mediocre, but I didnt check Yelp till the day of the appointment. I saw the negative reviews about wait times and some of the staff, but saw the number of positive reviews. Sadly I experienced the later, I arrived about 10 min early to handle paperwork which went smoothly. Then brought to the back for vitals and quick discussion with the nurse, I was just coming in as a new patient and to get a renewal of a prescription I have been taking for years. the nurse was great, vitals a quick check of details and then asked to wait in the chair till the Nurse Practitioner would see me. I am married to a NP and think they do great work. I also work in the medical industry but dont have a general practitioner I know personally to see. Here began the waiting, I sat there for another 30 minutes but I understand things come up and thats ok. When I asked the nurse if she could let me know how much longer, as I work too and needed to get back, she stuck her head into the office next to me and I heard her ask, the response was, Oh Yea, send him in. A staff member left that office about 20 minutes prior and no one had gone in or out. She had forgot about my appointment? or just got distracted, Again I understood, but expected her to apologize for the wait, No such luck, We are now 35 minutes late, and I arrived early. She goes through the basics asking questions when I tell her about the medication, the same thing I told the staff when I booked the appointment and the nurse she fails to ask me a single question about the condition requiring the medication. Yet tells me she needs a copy of my medical records, Totally fine, I didn't even think to bring them. I tell her I would be happy to get a copy and email them over. She does a very minimal vital check and then says well I can get you a script for 10 days worth but then once they get the medical records they can get me a full month supply, I asked if she could do a 30 day supply since it will screw with my insurance and they most likely will deny the second claim, she walks out and gets the medical director. They both come back in and tell me they won't write me a script but would consider it after I ran through a litany of checks and appointments with other doctors. I have been managing this condition since I was a child and have never been treated in this manner, but its a new place for me to live so I ask if this is the standard of care (these steps) I would expect from other physicians. He said he had no idea but that's how they handle it there. I was shocked. I was treated like I was an addict, which makes no sense, and was told that drug dealers sell this stuff, Surprise to me, I didn't know that was the case. Yet I was just short of accused of doing it. I would never go to this facility again, I would also never suggest anyone else goes here. I don't think this will make any impact but I do hope that people see there are many other options for physicians and healthcare in the area and spend your time and money at facilities that treat you with respect. As I posted on my review for Dr. Zunin, I love this place! They are friendly and all the providers are so caring. They have helped me for many different issues and I have no complaint against them. I like that it is convenient as all my appointments are in one place. Dr. Zunin can come across gruff at times but I know he genuinely cares about my care and health. Steve in PT is great. Patient with my progress and doesn't make me feel like an awkward for not being able to fully do some of the things. Hilary in OT is AWESOME, she is super nice and patient and really helps with everyday things. All the massage therapist are great and it's good that they do different styles. And I LOVE Alia in acu! She is the most giving person and her energy and life is contagious. read more

The Physican Assistant, Christopher Acree at Manakai O Malama put in a referral for me to have a sleep study done. Keahi scheduled my appointment for the sleep study and sent my sleep study packet to me by email explaining everything I needed to do prior to my appointment. Prior to my appointment, I received an automated appointment reminder. On Thursday night, October 9, 2014, I went for my sleep study appointment. The Sleep Lab Tech was extremely nice, professional and attentive. The room was very clean and tranquil, I actually thought I was in a hotel room for a minute. Lol!. After she explained the procedure, she connected all of the sensors and I laid down on a comfortable queen size bed. The air temperature was just right and I immediately fell asleep. This was a great experience for me because I don't normally sleep well in strange places but I was knocked out. Lol! The Sleep Tech made sure I was comfortable prior to the sleep study, during and after. A big Mahalo to the Manakai staff!!! read more

My regular doctor was away, so I made an appointment with Dr. Zunin. I'd heard he treated the "whole person", and it was pretty quick to get an appointment with him. I took off work to see him, and waited 40 minutes to see him. When I finally got into his office, I told him the reason for my visit and said I wanted to discuss my options. His response to me was physical therapy at his clinic. I told him I was hesitant to undergo physical therapy for a few reasons so I would like to discuss other options I had (I knew there were a few). He said that my reasons for being hesitant to undergo physical therapy were not his concern and that was the only option he was giving me. I was so stressed I started to cry, and told him again I would very much like to discuss my options, and he very coldly repeated that my reasons were not his concern and that was all he was giving me. I said thank you, left his office. So much for keeping the "whole person" in mind. Sounds like all he has in mind is his profit. read more

I was a new patient to this clinic and was hoping to finally find a GOOD doctor. The office is lovely and the staff are more than friendly and competent. I arrived early (23 minutes BEFORE my scheduled appointment), and was all checked-in. I sat down and waited...and waited...and waited. I had been in the office for an hour and 15 minutes (52 minutes past my scheduled appointment time) before I decided to call it quits. When I walked out of the office, all of a sudden "the Dr. can see you now." I was fuming. I completely agree with the first review - if you want to waste your time waiting, go here. However, I'd recommend picking another clinic. read more

UPGRADING this by a half-star, because: 1. The office staff explained discrepancies in previously paid amounts and what was on the bill, fairly patiently. Their bills' information is not at all listed in an intuitive way, and some critical facts are missing (such as what the date of the exact service you're being billed for is; they will instead list the last service processed by insurance, not the service you're being billed for--something about the process of the office getting billed by your insurance company), so you need to get a specific explanation to understand this paperwork, and also keep your co-pay receipts, just in case. Appreciated the time taken at researching then giving an explanation, and the competent customer service here. 2. Response by Yelp-reading staff on this site, to my original review, and related offer to talk about problems. Took a few weeks, and I've since moved onto a new doctor and won't be back (not related to the quality of this medical office's services; had to find my own, long-term doctor/s, anyway), but at least, the staff made an effort. 3. They do have some good staff, but, again, do your due diligence, and ask around about the individual medical practitioners and particular service providers working here, because the general quality varies substantially, depending on who you see. It even varies from visit to visit, because the volume they do is so high, that sometimes, it feels disorganized more than other times. The average grade I'd give for the medical and healing practioners (not including the office staff), over dozens of visits up through my last, recent one, would be TWO AND A HALF stars (partly because, over time, I've learned which ones are good and stopped seeing the less-than-effective ones), so I've upgraded the Yelp rating to three. And also, if you originally came to this office from an auto accident, recommended by your provider to have the staff perform your intake evaluation for the adjuster, do understand that though they might perform the role of assessing your medical condition for insurance, you don't have to go, automatically, with the services within their office that they recommend and will quickly try to book you for, but can go out to an outside office not related to them, so long as your insurance firm's company has them in their network (e.g. the Corvel network, etc.). They will make you jump through hoops -- filling out additional paperwork -- to go outside to other medical practitioners and service providers, and you might feel bad, because the staff consists of nice, personable local women who will try to get you to schedule appointments with the office's practitioners/providers on the spot. A lot of how this office makes its income is a "one stop shop" so that you don't need to go outside for services (that is, they're relying on the idea that Hawai'i people are too lazy or busy, to find the highest-quality services for specific medical needs, for themselves, and don't want to go to two or more places, if they can accomplish it with some competence, at one place). But it's your right to choose the BEST medical practitioners and specialists for your healing, since it's your insurance that's paying for it. And honestly, since I've worked with many doctors and healers over the decades, especially with family elderly care, I have to say, if you short yourself with the needs of your injuries or illnesses now, it will come back to bite you, later. The body is nothing if not honest. I'd get evaluated here, then take that paperwork of your injury and recommendations, tell them you're going to find your own doctors and practitioners. Then go home to do your research (YELP and other online reviews, and calling/emailing friends/colleagues who have good doctors, medical practitioners, massage therapists/acupuncturists, occupational/physical therapists, psychotherapists, and so on), find the MOST APPROPRIATE ones for you that fit in your insurance company's networks, and then arrange for this office to send the paperwork to those offices. Some may be with this office, but some might not. If this seems too difficult, then select a medical insurance evaluator whose arrangements make clear your basic right to go outside for medical/healing services. read more

I waited one hour to see this Doctor to have a 5 min. appointment with him and he didn't even examine me. Got diagnose from the door. Terrible bed side manners. I will happily never go back there again. Too bad the Doctor couldn't be as good as the rest of his staff. read more

This center has helped me alot when I had my car accident w/intense Physical, Occupational, Accupuncture & Massages, I had a great Tech/therapist/MD Team BUT-Front office MA & Receptionist made me feel like a Drug Addict when I needed my refill on pain med, Im gradually getting off the pain meds, and I never once abuse my medication- Im sounding defensive is because of how they made me feel-like Im a bad person-lets see if you have to go to the dentist, have a tooth pulled, then go home without any pain management-I dont like how they blankly Tell you-Its a Narco, Its not a Clean Pain Med or you need to see the MD even tho I just saw the MD 2 day before just that I forgot to ask for a refill, This Office has no empathy or compassion-Im surprised this happenes, especially in a Medical field. Seems like the MA or Receptionist Or PPAs have no rules to go by. read more

As a new patient I have found Dr. Zunin and his staff to be quite congenial, professional, courteous and focused on the individual patient seated in front of them. Dr. Zunin is knowledgeable and treats his patients with genuine care, providing a healthy, welcoming bed side manner and assists his patients in getting the care they desire and need.
