Don't read this if you are searching for a food description filled with accolades. The food was fine, perhaps even above average. Just don't have the vegetarian paella. Someone might ask, in an Italian-Mediterranean restaurant , why would you in the first place? But that's another story and uninteresting. Downtown Phoenix, up a set of escalators to an expansive patio, then through double doors to the hostess desk. Looking around, it was clear that the place was exceptionally busy, all tables being occupied and waiting patrons spilled out the door and onto the patio. I was glad to have made a reservation. Hostess greeted us directly. "Do you have a reservation?" "I believe I do, for 8 p.m." and gave her my name. It was about 7:30. Arrived early to have a martini at the bar and to await our table. "No, I don't see your name. I have no tables until eight o'clock." !!! Would it be possible to grab a drink in the bar to await our table, now reserved a second time for eight o'clock. "Bar's reserved for a private party" ("No martini for you.") And as it turned out, more prescient than she knew. "Is there perhaps a bar or restaurant nearby and we'll return at eight to be seated?" She turned to an employee "See if" such and such "is open." Man disappeared, returned in a minute, pronounced it so. We were seated immediately at a small table towards the back of what seemed to be the main room, there being another room adjacent. How accommodating. Good. Soon a server appeared, took drink orders. In a few minutes she reappeared with what appeared to be a martini and a G and T for my dinner partner. I had specified Tanqueray. Now, it has been my understanding since nearly the beginning of martini time that it is a gin drink, a bit of vermouth, and perhaps an olive or two. It can be shaken with ice or it can be stirred in ice, though originally it was stirred. I prefer shaken vigorously, infusing little flecks of ice that usually arrive with the drink. Most of this I described to our server. None of what was described arrived--not her fault. Instead, clear liquid in a proper glass was set before me. Something about it was off. I sipped: a barely chilled drink tasting nothing like Tanqueray gin, no olives. I struggled to figure out what had gone wrong behind the bar. Maybe my taste buds were off (an early sign of Alzheimer's perhaps or my three Moderna jabs were not up to the task.) There are those that believe a martini can be either gin or vodka. And in today's mushy world they would be correct. But the martini purist knows that originally this was a drink made with gin, essentially vodka with botanicals added during the making of the gin. It makes the liquor pop. Some love it, some can't stand it. Fair enough. But how bloody confusing. Just when I thought I had it all figured out I discover that Tanqueray also produces vodka. Case cracked. Bartender used Tanqueray Vodka I'd guessed. Or thought martini equals vodka. Who knows? Why such a big deal? the reader might rightfully ask. When you are looking forward to that pre-dinner cocktail and an unexpected intrusion arrives and a second try produces the same swill, well, it just changes the color of the evening. We started with the Stuffed Mushrooms appetizer that was delish, and then the Spinach, Arugula & Beet Salad. Highly recommend. I can't say enough about this place, we took my Mom here for her birthday to celebrate and the food was delicious, service was great and the atmosphere was perfect elegance. Service was exceptional and overall environment was great. The food on the other hand fell below my expectations. I ordered the New York Strip with it being extremely tough and not enjoyable to eat. When I say tough I was literally sawing down this meat for a good 15 seconds just to get a bite size piece. My wife ordered the lobster risotto but the lobster smelled very fishy while the rest of the dish tasted great. We were trying to access the shopping center from Jefferson and we could not find an entrance. We walked North on Second and were able to access that area near the Taco Bell. We went there just for happy hour appetizers and desserts, and it was good and affordable. I think happy hour deals were only good in the bar, and reservations could not be made. There was a disclaimer that I cannot remember the details, something like if you made an OpenTable reservation you would not get happy hour pricing, or something like that. Loved this place! A group of 10 of us were looking for somewhere we could go on a Friday night where we wouldn't have to wait an hour and we ended up here. The restaurant is very nice on the inside and the patio, which is where we sat. When we came, they had a large enough table set up for us and the ambiance was very welcoming and gave you a small taste of Italy. We started with the calamari and it was delicious! Their marinara sauce seems homemade and it paired very well with the calamari and the bread they brought to the table. The bread had some kind of seasoning on it that was delicious and it was cooked to perfection with a hard crust and soft inside. We ordered a wide range of food from steak to pasta, salmon, vegetarian dish, etc. No one had any complaints. The food came out in good timing. They had a nice wine selection and the server was quite knowledgeable about the wines and the food. Although no one purchased any, their desserts looked wonderful! We ordered Veal Parmesan, Veal Marsala, Chicken Piccata and and a house special of halibut. Each dish came with creamy risotto or penne marinara and a veggie. Garlic bread comes out while you are waiting for your meal. The dishes were delivered quickly. Food portions are large and it would be nice if they had an option if a smaller portion for those who eat less. The food was good; nothing special that stands out though. This is a delightful and memorable dining establishment in downtown Phoenix. The bar service, lead by Michael, was superb. I entered the bar area right after happy hour started and enjoyed a delicious meatball and risotto appetizer. Michael mixed up a very tasty Old Fashion that really hit the spot. The reservation process for a large group was far simpler than any other venue we've been. I ate here through uber eats. This is a cool little spot. I ordered the sweet potatoes with maple butter, Mac n cheese and the turkey meatballs. It was all delicious and better than expected- with so little reviews or pictures to sway me into dining here. I wasn't a huge fan of their meatballs, and I'm not quite sure why. I ordered their Lobster fra diavolo. It was so good. I ate leftovers for two days. The sauce was delicious, their was plenty of seafood along with the linguini, and it was great quality. Their calamari is pretty excellent as well. I will say though, that I always get the Cesar salad (usually for the next days to go lunch) and the mac N cheese with sweet potato mash Tonight, I ordered the Caesar salad with chicken.... such moist chicken and big shavings of Parmesan with real lettuce leaves. I also am trying their tiramisu dessert. I will let you know how that is! I love Italian food and am excited to come eat here In person to try the more exquisite dishes like osso bucco or the mussels. I'm also obsessed with their Mac n cheese. It's rare for me to disagree so much with the Yelp average but in my mind this place was 2.5 to 3 stars and I rounded up to 3 because of the friendly service. The stuffed mushrooms -- not hard to make mind you -- were swimming in Alfredo sauce. Why? On the menu it said there was Alfredo sauce but no I didn't imagine an Alfredo sauce soup with a few inverted stuffed mushrooms drowning in it. I went off-menu and asked for escalope of veal Milanese. Since they had a pork chop Milanese on the menu I figured it was no big deal. When it comes, it's swimming in cream sauce. Hint: Milanese means pan fried with breadcrumbs only. No sauce. Maybe a half a lemon. The Veal Parm wasn't any better. The bruschetta was particularly weak.
