The first thing to know is that this (in its current form) is not a spa. There are no locker rooms. You will sit in your street clothes and wait for your treatment in a semi-public waiting room. You will not be welcomed to change into a soft robe and slippers in a locker room. You will not be invited to relax before your treatment in a relaxation room or to use the sauna or steam room because they have absolutely none of these amenities. And, none of this is clear from reading their website. I noted this upon checking out, and the staff acknowledged they offer "treatment only" and not a spa experience. Then change your name to Mandara massage center. Also, you will be upsold. Not just on additional treatments, but on how firm you want the pressure. Yes, you read that right. Want light or medium pressure? Ok, that's included. Want firm pressure (not a deep tissue massage, mind you, just firm pressure) that's $10 (or $15 - I can't remember) extra. Insane. I have been to true spas across the globe and never been upsold on the firmness of the massage. I felt bad for the massage therapists who had a plastic card with various upsells they are obviously forced to push. I booked a Swedish massage with light pressure. What I received was a strange amalgamation of various techniques. At times it felt like the long relaxing strokes of the Swedish technique. At other times it felt like Thai, Shiatsu, reflexology and other things I didn't recognize. I didn't leave feeling particularly relaxed. Overall, this was a very disappointing experience. read more

My husband and I get massages everywhere we go, especially on vacation. I had the Lomi lomi massage with hot stones. The room is lovely quiet with some soft calming music. The lomi lomi is a mix of a Swedish and deep tissue massage. I added the hot stones. The pressure and temperature were perfect. The stones are a bit hot in the beginning but so soothing. Very thorough and time spent on all areas. The stones are used all over. They wipe off the oil with towels which is nice. Well worth the $ going back with my husband before we go home. read more

Um...not a spa. More like a massage center. There were no robes, no lockers, no showers, no steam room, no sauna... just a place where you would check in and sit and wait to be taken to your room where you had your massage appointment. The massage wasn't bad, not great either, the therapist used her elbows a lot. THERE was a BIG push to upgrade -a scalp treatment for $35 and hot stone massage for more money and I just wanted a deep tissue massage. I finally consented to do the upgrade to the scalp massage and later regretted it because I left a grease ball with no way to shower after the treatment. AND then came the HARD sell to buy the products they used during the massage. I didn't appreciate the pressure that they put me under to purchase stuff and I didn't appreciate the hard sell to upgrade the massage, it ruined the experience for me. Oh and by the way, they really need to rename it. "Mandara Massage Center" and lose the "spa" verbiage altogether. The other bad experience we encountered was my niece was getting a massage in the next room. They were pressuring her to upgrade and she was very uncomfortable - her very first massage. Her therapist interrupted my massage to ask if she could do the scalp upgrade. I have never been interrupted during a massage before. A little unnerving. The nail in the coffin (one star review)...The women's restroom with two stalls - both were non- functioning. I am like, "You've got to be kidding me!" $900 in two massages, no spa, being pressured to buy stuff and not even a working toilet! My last visit to Mandara was in June for my pedicure, however this time was a manicure, basic or it's called a classic. I have no issues with my hands other than I wanted to spruce my nails up. Caylee made my reservations quickly ( this can be done online as well). I arrived and Danielle was ready and we got started. Danielle was most attentive that I was comfortable. I really enjoy Danielle with her wonderful personality and attention to detail. The hand massage was lovely, nice peaceful music in the background enhanced my service. I will certainly add a manicure to my self care calendar. I left refreshed and uplifted. I will be out of town for a very short time and will be in need of a pedicure next! As many have noted, this is not a typical spa; this is for a massage only. -No facilities (beyond the outdoor pool, which anyone can enjoy). -In the waiting area, other guests were chatting away on phones and staff was giving some sort of "business" tour with a group. Usually, this area would be a quiet zone, not at Mandara. Not a very relaxing vibe prior to my massage. -No facilities to change. As for my massage, this was the high point. Excellent. However, the new negative item to note is the construction occurring within the building. That's right, you can hear the construction noise throughout your service. The reason for the 4 stars is that they never tell you that you will be automatically charged for tip so I ended up tipping twice and no one stopped me or said anything. I booked a 60-minute couples Lomi Lomi massage with my boyfriend, and it was a complete disaster. From start to finish, there was zero effort to create a relaxing environment--no robe, no water or beverage offered beforehand, and once we got into the room, the staff spent 10 minutes pushing upgrades and prices, then just stared at us waiting for an answer. We did the foot treatment just to get things going, and the promised discount still left us paying $500. Our massages were COMPLETELY different despite booking the same type. Mine was barely a light rub, and I left feeling frustrated. My boyfriend's massage therapist, on the other hand, gave him a deep tissue massage while breathing EXTREMELY heavily the entire time and asking constant, distracting questions. Her loud, disruptive behavior made it impossible to relax, and my boyfriend left feeling sore and bruised. I specifically booked a kids mani/pedi for my daughter. I only book those for her if they offer it specifically children. She knows salon etiquette and is very well behaved. As soon as the technician saw us she looked annoyed. She said nothing to my daughter the entire manicure. Next was the pedicure and the tech expected my daughter to take her shoes off while her finger nails were still wet. Next the tech asked my daughter if she had a sibling and when my daughter said no she said "don't you want one, aren't you lonely?" Disgusting, she is my miracle baby, I can't have another, why would you say that? Then when she was finished painting her toes she said your done and told us to leave. I ran the Honolulu marathon and booked two massages as part of recovery. The first was a Lomi Lomi massage a day after and the second was a Deep Tissue massage three days after. The Lomi Lomi massage was... not a Lomi Lomi. I am surprised as this is Hawaii. What I received was a sports massage. I didn't mind it, however, because the practitioner did a good job. Nice pressure, nice strokes, good awareness. I'd give her four and a half stars. The Deep Tissue massage is the reason I'm writing this review. It was essentially the same massage as before, a sports massage, but with a far less skilled practitioner. The pressure was so butter soft. I told him to turn it up a lot but I got mediocre back rubbing for most of the 90 minute session. The times he used strong pressure were so brief. He did a good job on my forearms and calves, but it was a few strokes and then on to another part. The worst thing he did was when he used his forearm on my triceps area. He was not on my muscle. He dug his forearm bone into my inner arm bone/nerve! I repositioned my arm to have my tricep up, and he repositioned it back to hit my bone/nerve. Incredible incompetence. It was 10 minutes of good, 20 minutes of OK, and 60 minutes of bad. I told the receptionist and she gave me 20% off (equal to the automatic gratuity added). This is the only time I've ever wanted to walk out a massage midway. I didn't but I should have. I would have been better paying the $300 and not showing up. Do better, Tony! read more

The booking and reception room staff at this facility were professional and helpful. The waiting room was clean, spacious, and quiet. The massage I booked (deep tissue/lomi) was hands down the best 1-hour massage I have ever had. Dori, the massage therapist, communicated well during the massage and sensed when I needed to zone out and relax. She has a background in medical massage but is very experienced with deep tissue and Lomi work. She has an excellent sense for how much pressure to apply and asked if I needed more pressure if she was unsure. She applies solid pressure that is very effective. I have some chronic tension in my back and hip flexors from equestrian sports and cycling. She provided some stretches and deep work to help the affected areas which made a huge difference. 48 hours after the massage, my back tension/pain when lying on my back was gone! I only wish she lived closer to home! read more

We were staying at the HHV and I found this Groupon for hour massage with free foot treatment (M-F only). The spa is located in the Kaile tower, a walking distance from our tower at Diamond Head. The gal at check in made us pay for the remaining balance (service charge and gratuity) which was kind of weird. Because when I was done paying for both $30 each = $60, the supervisor came out and asked, how was your massage. I said I don't know yet because I just got here and was asked to pay. So confusing I almost feel like it was a scam or this woman had no idea what was going on even if she was on the other side of the counter. The women's spa portion was so disappointing. The hot tub was not working with a paper sign that said sorry. The shower and bathroom didn't feel clean and didn't have that spa fresh smell and ambience. So it makes you question, what's the service charge for if not everything is functional or working? The 50 minute massage and 20 minute foot treatment was good. I've had better but the therapists were very polite and courteous. The foot treatment that was $40 value free was non existent - it was slather on oil and that's it. Overall, you would expect more from a spa operator that has facilities around the world. Here it felt like it everything was missing from the spa facility, staffing, and services. read more
