I can't believe I've been here a whole year and just now trying this spot out! I was on the Columbus foodie page on Facebook and happen to come across this restaurant that everyone was raving about. So of course I had to try it out! I was looking for a place in town that sold the Korean Chinese noodle dishes like Jajangmyun and Jjampong and I finally found the spot! The location is in a plaza over by Mellow Mushroom so there's plenty of parking. I came right when they opened with my two daughters who are under 3 years of age. Although it was chaos for me, the food was absolutely delicious! My 2 year old's favorite food is Jajangmyun so I'm so happy we finally explored this spot. Their lunch menus are very reasonably priced and almost feel like it's too good to be true. It comes with an egg roll, fried rice, your choice of meat, and soup! I ordered takeout spent over $60. The fried rice doesn't even taste or look fried. It just looks like a white rice with eggs and veggies. This sweet-and-sour chicken was dry and tough. The Mongolian beef was also tough but tasty. Very disappointed. read more

I have loved this place since they opened. The egg rolls are fabulous and all of the food and soups are incredible as well. I like lunch better as less expensive and not any left overs. Service is generally good and all times acceptable. Great feeling, quiet, no screaming kids. read more

The food is very authentic. And for Korean lovers, they make homemade Jjamppong. I usually have to call it in 30 minutes ahead, but definitely worth it!! During COVID, like other restaurants, they had to only do take-out orders. I am so glad they did not close down and now fully running dine-in eating. The ambiance has changed, by adding more tables and Asian picturesque items. The owner is very sweet and very nice. I will add photos later. read more

Mandarin Cafe is still our favorite place for Chinese food in Columbus after all these years. Today, we ordered Chambon (Korean spicy noodle soup) and Pork with Vegetables (lunch special). The Hot and Sour soup that comes with the special is delicious. They make the soup here fresh daily. We enjoy the great variety of vegetables, pork, fried rice, and crispy egg roll. Hubby loves the spiciness, the variety of seafood and vegetable flavors, and most importantly the hand-made noodles. read more

I had really high hopes for Mandarin cafe but it was straight up awful. I got Jajangmyeon and husband ordered the Traditional Chinese Style sweet and sour pork, both are on their Korean menu. Jajangmyeon tasted like starch slurry thickener and the sweet and sour pork had maraschino cherries in them. MARASCHINO CHERRY!!! WITH PINEAPPLE!!! AND BREAD AND BUTTER PICKLES!!!! WHO DOES THAT?!!! I took one bite and did not touch the rest of it. Jajangmyeon was supposed to be this wonderful bean paste sauce that's rich and indulgent and this place makes us just so so bland. I question if there was any soybean paste in there at all. You'd be better off with a $1.50 Nongshim Chapaghetti. The owner/chef explained to me that their food is northern Chinese style and that is a straight up lie. My family is from the north. This is like telling a New Yorker pineapple on pizza IS THE NY style. The only good thing about this place is their actual noodles. They smelled like it was made with alkaline water and it had the correct texture and chew. We will never visit there again. Oh and the waiter was very friendly. read more

We are Chef Lee customers for 40+ years. However recently that place was so gross that we walked out. So in our quest to find a good place we decided to try Mandarin House. Did not expect much. The food was awesome. It was fresh and left us such that we can't wait to go back. The service went along with the great food. I am calling all those die hard Chef Lee customers that are turning a blind eye to the dirty restaurant, mush egg rolls and rude servers to try this place. It really is better, cleaner and deserves your visit. read more

My wife and I went to Mandarin House Thursday night for dinner. We ordered Sizzling Rice soup and Hot & Sour soup for our appetizer. Both soups were excellent. For our entree we had Kung Pao Beef and Pad Thai. Both entrees were well seasoned and served beautifully. The restaurant was busy, but peaceful and the service was quick and courteous. We plan on making Mandarin House one of our regular stops. read more

Lol Now, on Veterans (shopping area with Mellow Mushroom) Columbus is lucky to have this hidden gem! What's great? Everything! Lol Really... (I won't spell anything right, sorry)... Mu shu pork/ rolled in pancake with homemade plum sauce- EXCELLENT! Garlic chicken, Mongolian beef, Pepper steak, and Chicken lo mein. Crab angels (called Rangoons, other places) - to die for... yummy! I also like their egg drop soup and sizzling rice soup. I don't eat egg drop soup from anywhere else (most places put the yolk in it) It's nice inside. It's kind of dark (dim lighting) and quiet. It's a great escape/ for some quiet time. Great for lunch with friends (where you can catch up and hear each other.) At night, it's a little more fancy.... has a romantic feel to it. And, they do to-go! The owners are great! They take pride in their business, food, and details. If you want your meal cooked, made to order, no problem. Picky eaters are catered to! Lol Remove ingredients (egg, onion, spicy peppers)... no problem! Their employees are always knowledgeable, professional and courteous. This place is Epic! Food is heavenly! It's a, must try! Apparently it's some kind of sin to admit to liking Americanized Chinese food, but this is my go to guilty pleasure. Mandarin Cafe has the best sesame and sweet and sour chicken in town. It doesn't taste like chicken mcnuggets drowned in watery syrup. The vegetables are also fresh cut. They also have a small Korean menu available. The atmosphere, while not on par with the palace that's Chef Lee, I find Mandarin Cafe setting is clean and somewhat charming. Fine for a date or family. read more

I have been going here for several decades ( before they moved) and all the food is consistently excellent. During the current COVID I have made it a practice to make big takeout orders as I have with some of my other favorite restaurants to help so they will be there when this is over. Starting out we were skeptical. The place was a ghost town on a Friday night, but we have yet to have really good Chinese food here in Columbus so we figured we should give it a try. I had been to the old Mandarin House back in the 80s and had not given it another thought... hoo boy. We started with some righteous kimchi, and I had perhaps the best bowl of hot and sour soup I have had. Very fresh, very tasty. The soup had perfectly cooked shrimp and scallops, all the vegetables in the soup were quite fresh. I was floored. We continued with the Crab Angel (crab rangoons) which were fantastic. The crab meat was blended into the cream cheese filling, but it was clear that these were made in-house and with a great level of care. Now the main courses. I ordered the Mandarin Chicken (the place isn't really mandarin, but I'm looking at this as more of a "signature dish" experience) and my dining companion ordered a sweet-and-sour beef dish from the back pages of the menu-- the *authentic* cuisine, if you will. Both dishes involved batter-fried meats. My chicken was quite delicious-- the garlic sauce was wonderful, and the chicken was fine, perhaps too much batter for my taste. My companion's beef, however, was regrettable. It is never good when you question not only what cut of meat you are eating, but also what animal it comes from... that said, the sauce on the dish was delightful and the fruits and vegetables accompanying the meat were tasty. This Chinese style restaurant has everything for everyone. For those that want American style Chinese food to those that are looking for more authentic, to even those that are looking for korean style Chinese food. We ordered the black bean noodles and fried chicken. They were probably the best I've ever had. They don't cheap or on the ingredients or the quantity. Really impressed. The Mandarin Cafe, formerly known as the Mandarin House, is a delicious, quaint - albeit stereotypical - chinese restaurant. I've always been pleased with both the quality and quantity of the food there. I am not a Chinese food elitist, so my reference points are few, but I'm quite happy with the General Tso's Chicken, the Mongolian Beef, the Orange Chicken and the various sides and desserts offered. The most underrated Chinese restaurant in town. This place is my go-to Chinese restaurant because the food is always great. Their Mongolian Beef is more addictive than P.F. Chang's. The meat is thinly sliced and tender, has great flavor and I love the little white noodles underneath because they absorb all the excess sauce. I'm not big on left overs, but when I have left over Mandarin Cafe in the fridge and someone eats it - I'm ready to fight! Lol. The food is always cooked fresh to order. We came here because we saw it had great reviews while they were at their previous location under the name Mandarin House. Its pretty close to where we're staying right now, so we were going to order take out and eat in our room but we decided to dine in. We ordered 3 dishes: sweet & sour chicken, vegetable lo mein, & coconut curry beef. The sweet & sour chicken was really good with chunks of carrot, onion, bell pepper, & pineapple. The coconut curry was good but a tad on the sweet side. I liked the veggies in it though - broccoli & carrots the most. The veggie lo mein was my favorite since the noodles had a really good flavor and were nice and thick. The veggies were not soggy butnstill had crispness, and of course there were a lot of them, even better. Sides of rice came with the meat dishes, i assume, so we got 1 white and 1 fried. All in all, the food was very good and tasted freshly made. Usually at the end of a chinese food meal, you'd get a fortune cookie but besides that, we also received a small plate with 3 pieces of dessert on it. It was a folded wonton fried and covered in a sticky sweet coating. It was delicious! Wish i wouldve asked what that was now. My girlfriend (who is a chef) simply didn't want rice, and wanted vegetables. They wouldn't substitute it even with a higher fee. She wanted noodles and shrimp then and they couldn't do that. My father, a WW2, Korea, Vietnam veteran, and I has supported these fine folks for YEARS!! My father and I would have "daddy daughter dates" ( I am in my 60's LOL) and when we would come on their restaurant they would love on my father and encourage me, as my father has Alzheimers. As someone who has been in this industry for over 40 years and in this town for 60 plus years, I am CONSISTANTLY blown away by their kindness and GREAT food!! First time. Satay Chicken was horrible, chicken had no flavor and was over cooked and peanut sauce was out of a can and cold. However, the Golden crispy rice soup and Kung Pao chicken were excellent. The menu is a bit strange, it seems to be a fusion of Thai and Chinese. Will definate go back and try some other dishes...but my take is that it will be hit or miss..when it hits it's great and when it misses it misses horribly. read more

My wife and I always went to Mandarin House for Chinese when we were dating. Now when we moved back to Columbus we found the Mandarin Café. My wife always gets the Mongolian beef, and she always says how good it is. She won't order it any where else. I really like their soups. The House Special and sizzling rice soups are delicious. Sweet and sour chicken was a 5. Just like I get up in the northeast. Crab rangoons where not too bad, a little over cooked. Pork fried rice was a 1, if that. Totally ruined my experience. I would try again though just because the chicken fingers from my sweet and sour dish where delicious. But I'd stay away from the fried rice. read more
