Ordered the noodle soup on a day I was looking for something homey and comforting. It was really bland, as the dish came with just soup and slightly overcooked noodles. I was very hesitant on coming in bc not going to lie, the exterior and interior look really run down and I questioned if the food was going to be good. But I went in anyways and gave it a chance. I was pleasantly surprised. The food is very Chinese American, but large portions and seasoned well. Think a higher quality version, with much more variety, of Panda Express, except made fresh to order. My husband and I ordered their beef chow fun, roast pork lo mein, and beef garlic sauce with egg roll, all for about 33$. It was delicious! It is take out only. I would recommend to call in and pick up. Friendly front staff, no frills kind of place. I'm happy to be within 10 minute walking distance from here and will definitely order again. read more

I loved the food, it was very tasty. I was a little apprehensive when I saw the inside of restaurant but I was doing takeout and it was great. I love this fast, no frill American Chinese restaurant. Their portion is also quite generous compared to the prices. Their lunch combo (a side of choice, fried or white rice and a sweet and sour soup) is good enough for a hungry person to be satisfied! They definitely are on a cheaper side for Chinese food in Somerville/Cambridge area for sure. Their staff don't really speak English as clearly and other than what I ordered, I have trouble understanding what they are saying at times. However, they are good, hardworking people! The dishes you order may take a while to come out because they make them fresh to order for you. Check it out if you have time. I'm definitely planning to stop by here again in the future even though I'm moving out of this area already. read more

Good food, good portions, good price; delivery driver can be quite rude. I'd easily give Mandarin Chinese Restaurant 4+ stars for their food. They serve your standard American-Chinese staples and I'd definitely rate them above average in this category. The portions are generous and their prices are very reasonable. The only reason I wouldn't rate their food at 5 stars is because I had one order of beef teriyaki (out of two) which tasted a bit sour, likely from being too old. I ordered both the General Tso and Sesame Chicken, and the dishes were crispy on the outside, tender on the inside, with a well-balanced sauce that was the right amount of sweet, sour and salty. The reason for dropping Mandarin Chinese Restaurant to 3 stars is because of one of the delivery drivers who was rude: Long story short, I ordered through Grubhub and requested the driver text me upon arrival. I request to be texted as my phone automatically blocks calls from phone numbers that are not on my contacts list. I do this so I don't get bothered by spam and marketing callers that can ping me up to a dozen times a day. Instead, the driver spammed my doorbell (as in they pressed in maybe 5-7 times within a 5 second time frame). When I came out, he shined his flashlight right into my eyes like a movie interrogation scene and started yelling at me about how I need to answer my phone. I looked at my phone and saw 0 text messages, and asked if he texted me. He then repeatedly told me that I need to answer my phone, to which I repeatedly asked back whether he texted me as I had requested. We did this about a half dozen times before finally relented that he did not text me, handed my food and walked away. I looked at some of the other reviews on Grubhub, and it looks like the common thread is that the delivery driver can get quite cranky if there is any complexity to the delivery order, whether the drop off point is out of the way or you want to be contacted a particular way. It seems that if you have an easy address to deliver to, and can pick up the phone when he calls, this probably won't be an issue. However, anything outside that approach and the delivery driver may give you a piece of his mind. read more

This is my second time getting takeout at Mandarin and it continues to never disappoint. I usually get the general tso's chicken which has the perfect balance of sweet and spicy. The chicken is cooked perfectly and not mushy. The veggie lo mein is always good and the crab Rangoons are always crispy and fresh. I've had other items before like their pan fried dumplings and this place is the best for fresh Chinese food in the east Somerville area (not greasy!!). I've never had to wait for my food when I go to pick it up. The inside is nothing to rave about which is why a majority of their orders are takeout. I highly recommend Mandarin for a fresh classic Chinese meal! read more

Hubby and I are on a quest to find our favorite naughty Chinese food. We ordered from Mandarin last night. I was very pleasantly surprised. The food is exactly what you want from Chinese takeout. Food came at a decent time, everything was hot and fresh. We got chicken wings, house fried rice, spare ribs, egg drop soup, and hot and spicy shrimp (mild). They have huge crispy chicken wings! They do it differently as it seems they flour the wings, if you're into Dominican style pica pollo chicken or even southern fried chicken, you will definitely be into these! They also have fried plantains on the menu which leads me to wonder if there is some DR influence there, regardless We loved them! Get the wings! Egg drop soup was good. House fried rice was good, I personally like mine to look darker, but taste was good. The shrimp was ordered mild, but was too spicy for me! I was really impressed by the spare ribs, an American Chinese classic I usually avoid. Their spare ribs were nice! Very well cooked, no weird rubbery pieces or globby fat. They were almost candied, really nice texture and flavor! The color was really appealing as well. This might be our go to place, for the wings alone! I was craving for American Chinese food, just PFP (pork fried rice) and sesame chicken. And I just found this restaurant in union square that has everything I was looking for! Food wasn't too overly greasy, and this was just what I was looking for. Sesame chicken- still has nice crisp and right amount of sauce. Just what I wanted. The packaging was sealed right, no mess left. I also recommend their crab rangoon! Generous portion and it is yummy. The moo shu (mixed vegetables and meat with plum sauce in a tortilla wrap) was quite good - not outstanding but satisfying enough. However, the chow fun featured overcooked, slimy rice noodles that had lost their bite, the egg rolls order contained only one single egg roll, and the wonton soup was mediocre (meat tasted not very good, overly thick and doughy wrapper, and broth that tasted of salt but little else). Love this hole in the wall quality Chinese restaurant!! I've been a loyal mandarin supporter since 2019 when I moved down the street from union square. Consistent with the quality and always delicious. Salt and pepper shrimp, general chicken and tofu are delicious, and the appetizers for the portions like crab Rangoon are so worthwhile. We ordered on the phone. Our first food order from Mandarin, as we were swinging the dipsy-doodle at home for date night. The dish with the most flavor in the order was a dish that was not my order. Sign on wall, "No refunds on mistaken orders", or something like that, hmmm. Phone ordered and repeated back twice, repeating my order at pick-up didn't help. Moo- shi shrimp was not in the bag, it was a shrimp dish with mostly mushrooms, water chestnuts, some carrot and a few peapods, it was good, the best part of the order. I would order that again if I knew what it was. The shrimp were plenty, good size and flavorful. Had I known what was coming I would have ordered plain rice to go with it. I don't think the entrees come with rice? Highlights, One: the appetizer group DD, very large filled average crab rangoons, pork rib tough and dry, the rest unremarkable. Two: The scallion pancakes were dry and hard on edges, very crunchy; refried or heated up, lacking any scallion flavor, we tossed them. Regretting not ordering from here before! Dope Chinese restaurant that from what I can tell, is immigrant owned/operated (yay immigrants!). Got the general Tso's tofu and it was some of the best I've ever had. Spring rolls, shrimp and broccoli looked good too! Lovely service. COVID-19 tip: order at the restaurant for take-out or call ahead. Delivery is done through the apps. I prefer to not order through third party apps as they take way too much money from restaurant owners. Interior is not fancy but food is yummmmmmy. read more

Really pleased. Found this place on Yelp, had to stop by Somerville anyway. I drove by, and walked in to order. The health measures seemed good. (I usually don't order American Chinese food, preferring authentic instead ... but once in a while, my family really have the craving for it). I ordered Scallion Pancake, Crab Ragoons, Mooshoo Pork, Moo Goo Gai Pan, and General Tso chicken ... the typical American Chinese fare. It was ready in under 15 minutes, piping hot, and everything seemed very fresh. I had the fried stuff in the bag and didn't get home till almost 30 minutes later, and they were still crispy (well fried!) The oil is fresh and it doesn't taste "old". All three entree dishes are great, and portion is plentiful. Four of us ate, and had more than enough for a second meal - Chinese left-over is even better than Chinese take-out, in a way! The only thing is that white rice didn't come with the entrees. So if you want white rice, be sure to ask or order. The Combo meals are nice - instead of normal fried rice, it came with a nice pork-fried-rice, and it's cheaper than the entree itself. Oh, by the way, I compared the menu with about 4 or 5 places in Somerville/Arlington that are rated well, and this is the least expensive, by about $3-$5 per entree. Very impressed. Well tonight I thought I'd order from somewhere new to us, I ordered through grub hub and after an hour and our grub up app was not updating I phoned the restaurant , I had asked the woman who answered the phone if the order had been picked up yet, she put a man on the phone, he in turn started yelling at me and asked me if I was crazy , and told me I call all the time ??????? I proceeded to tell him I've never contacted this establishment before. He replied " what's your address , and yelled were so busy, I said why are you talking to me like that. He hung up. Very fair to say even If we enjoy the food, I will never order from here or recommend this place. Very very disappointed with my experience. Good cheap Americanized Chinese food...don't expect any exquisite gourmet delights and you'll be pleasantly surprised. This place is all about functional food at reasonable prices but without the MSG and heavy oils you often get in the process. Had the General Tso's chicken and beef kung pao combo, both around eight bucks and each provided two servings so it works out to less than five bucks per serving, really not bad at all. The fried rice it came with was surprisingly good, not greasy or bland, and the fried spring roll wasn't bad either. Inside, there are about six or seven tables, no wait service which is great because you don't have to tip, and if you carry around your own water like I do, no need to pay for drinks either. Not exactly cozy or elegant ambiance obviously, but not bad either if you don't feel like lugging the stuff back home to eat. I suppose you could easily BYOB, doubt they would notice or care. The food took a good 15 minutes, which to me is a good sign...it was obviously made from scratch rather than sitting under a heat lamp all day. Place seems to be a husband and wife team. They don't speak much English but are not unpleasant or anything. Have to say, the food quality here is significantly better than the Red House Chinese place just down the street, for about the same price range. read more
