Very good dumplings! The portion sizes are large, so going with a group makes sense...you can order a variety and share. For example, when you go to dim sum, you get 3-4 har gao (crystal wrapper shrimp dumplings) per order. An order at Dumplings House is 10 dumplings. My party was only 3 people, and we ordered 7 items, and had a lot of leftovers. Thank goodness these all reheat well. There is a good selection of dumplings, plus many traditional Chinese specialties, plus the classics like Singapore noodles and a variety of fried rice options. The best 3 items we tried were the red bean steamed buns, the soup dumplings, and the crystal shrimp dumplings. Service was great. Prices are reasonable. Ambiance is comfortable, a few different smaller rooms make it feel cozy. Will go back next time I must have dumplings. read more

Today was our first time trying Dumpling House, in Cambridge! We arrived at the perfect time, right before the dinner rush. It was pretty busy for a Monday and the restaurant filled up quick. We knew we definitely wanted to try their pork + crab soup dumplings and their Szechuan style sliced fish, but we were struggling with figuring out what else we wanted to try. We ended up going w/ our server's suggestion for our 3rd dish: spicy salt & pepper pork! All the dishes we ordered were solid, to our surprise. Not the best Chinese food around but not a bad choice at all, by any means. Our favorite dish was the C1:Szechuan style sliced fish! It had the best flavor & great to eat w/ some rice. In terms of spice level, I'd give it a 6/10. Won't make you start sweating but you'll definitely feel a slight kick. We really enjoyed the spicy salt + pepper pork, as well. I liked the way it was fried & had a nice crunch! Wish it was a little saltier and more flavorful though. As for the soup dumplings, they were a little different from others that we've tried around. The dumpling skin is quite thick & filling had onions. I would give these a 5/10... kind of disappointing since we expected the soup dumplings were gonna be the star of our meal, given the fact that the restaurant has "dumpling" in their name. We decided to order some hot tea after we finished eating & it was a perfect way to end our meal ;) They have A LOT of dishes on their menu but I think some dishes are definitely better than others & you have to choose carefully because depending on what you order, it can really alter your opinion on how good their food is. Came here for a quick lunch on a weekday and we especially enjoyed the soup dumplings and Chinese broccoli. The dumpling skin was not too thick, the soup was flavorful and the meat was a good texture / not a dense meat wad. Chinese broccoli had nice garlicky flavor to offset the bitterness. This is one of my cousin's favorite places to dine in the area so we had to go for dinner. Dumpling House is a popular spot in Cambridge and they don't take reservations, so expect a wait during peak hours. We waited about 20 minutes for a table for six, which wasn't bad. There's a small indoor lobby with benches, so you can stay warm while waiting. The restaurant is busy and lively, with lots of large groups, making it a great choice for group dinners. We ordered a variety of dishes and really enjoyed our meal: A17 - Beef Pancake: One of my favorites of the night. The scallion pancake was super crispy, just how I like it, and wrapped around flavorful beef. A29 - Pan-Fried Dumplings: Tasty, with a nice crisp, but not the standout of the meal. A30 - Soup Dumplings: Juicy, hot, and flavorful. The soup broth inside was especially delicious. G18 - Mapo Tofu: A bit too watery for my taste. Isn't made with peanuts (for those with allergies) G2 - Sautéed Watercress: Fresh and lightly seasoned, a good veggie side, because you have to order one. F11 - Mango Chicken: We picked this as an alternative to orange chicken. Also I've never heard of mango chicken so this intrigued me. The chicken is not battered, but sliced and coated with a glossy sauce. It was very flavorful, and much lighter and fresher than typical Chinese chicken dishes. B17 - House Special Fried Rice: Great. It wasn't too oily and came with shrimp, pork, and lots of cabbage! C1 - Sliced Fish Szechuan Style (Large): Recommended by our server for a fish dish. Awful service. Joined the waitlist and was told it would be 30-45 minute wait. We waited over 90 minutes. We were first in the waitlist for over 25 minutes, and watched several other parties that arrived after go in before us. We notified them that we were there when we were first on the waitlist, and then asked a few times after when we would be seated. We were finally told that it was because we had only checked in when we were at the top of the waitlist, and only then did they start counting us in the queue. Not sure why they have a Yelp waitlist if you need to check in to start counting in the waitlist. During dinner, we watched several other guests ask the host the same question, saying they've been waiting for half an hour at the top of the waitlist. She again told them that people only join the queue when they check in in-person, and the Yelp waitlist doesn't count because people can "join at any time from anywhere." Wish they had a sign or something to inform us. Also, the food was not good. The pickled greens and fish soup (酸菜鱼) was the worst I've ever had, and I've had a lot that soup. This is one of my favorite Chinese places since coming here. You can't make a reservation for this place but there was only a 20 mins wait on a Saturday night. For appetizers, we got the vegetable buns with mushrooms. It was very light and fluffy. It had a great filling pairing perfectly with the soy and chili oil. For dinner, i got the Taiwan noodles with chicken. It was very juicy and flavorful. Every bite had a burst of flavor. The ambiance was great and fun! The service was okay. We did get the wrong order and took a bit to fix. They also did put the dish at the table and went away without saying what the dish was. Often get takeout and the quality is just as good but they have a good lunch special if you go in house that includes entree, rice, & soup (though the soup is vegetarian not vegan unfortunately). Service was great when we went for lunch. Wish they had vegan dumplings, the vegetarian dumplings have eggs, but they do have mushroom buns which was good but a little plain, could use a sauce. Not sure exactly the difference between the sautéed flat noodles and the sautéed rice noodles but both are good! Have also tried the vegetarian three treasures (potato, eggplant, bell pepper), sautéed pea pod shoots, basil eggplant, and sautéed mixed vegetables with garlic which are all delicious. Dumpling House is a lovely little restaurant just on the edge of Central Square. Its location is super close to the red line and they have 5+ parking spots in front in case you drove. The staff is super friendly and service is very quick for those in a rush. We had the xiao long bao (soup dumplings) to start, which were delicious! I would recommend ordering these first, especially if you want them as an appetizer, as they do take some time to make. We each got a lunch special, which runs til 3pm on weekdays. It's a great deal, with a bowl of warm soup and rice on the side of a well cooked dish. The dishes here aren't too salty, which is great for people who like authentic asian food. I was really excited when I first walked it. I thought this would be super authentic, and just overall great experience. The food was mid at best. We ordered the shrimp dumplings, beef flat noodles , and the pork pan fried buns.( buns not in picture because it was so bad) Initially the noodles were amazing, and had lots of flavor. I think the greasy thick dough wrapped pork buns just heighten the flavor of oil for the remainder of the meal, to the point I couldn't eat anymore noodles. The buns were huge balls of oily dough, and the top part was slightly raw. I couldn't even enjoy the filling because it was so greasy. The shrimp dumplings had no flavor, it was as if they bought frozen dumplings you would normally see at a Chinese buffet. Food wise, the noodles were ok. But the sauces were a saving grace for the lack of flavor & grease. The servers barely came to our table, but I will give props to their bus boy. They helped us more than the servers. Ordered the udon Shanghai, salt & pepper wings, pork fried rice and crab Rangoon. Food arrived fast and was piping hot. The Udon Shanghai was once again outstanding. If you are into texture (and flavor), order this. The noodles are delicious and chewy, lots of Smokey flavor, great noodles to meat and veggie ratio. The spicy salt & pepper wings were extremely well packaged. I appreciated that they ventilated the container so that the wings arrived hot but still really crispy. Great flavor and addictive spice. I don't like spicy food but I really enjoyed the 1 wing I could tolerate. And I thought the price was fair for the portion, 10 pieces (5 whole wings). Pork fried rice, not going to lie, I was disappointed and kind of put off when I first opened the container. This is not your stereotypical pork fried rice. The rice was white and I instantly got a whiff of something fishy, which confused me. I thought they sent me the wrong dish, I tried it anyway and discovered that the fishy smell was fish sauce and that the rice was super flavorful and fresh. Lots of garlic flavor. I was surprised I liked it so much, very different from the average pork fried rice. The crab Rangoon were disappointing, they tasted fine but were tiny and the price is way to high for the portion, Overall, this place is making good quality, freshly made, flavorful food. It's not going to satisfy that craving for greasy, naughty, American Chinese food (or give you the same bang for your buck) but if you're open to something new, this is it. read more
