I had higher expectations based on the other reviews but the food was just o.k. in my opinion. I asked for it very spicy and still had to add heat to it when it arrived, and it wasn't very flavorful. The fried rice it came with looked very white and not fried, but our server confirmed that it was fried rice, it just didn't taste or look like it, which might be a good thing for other patrons, but I really enjoy the flavor and texture of fried rice. Our trip to Mandarin Chinese started with our beverages: two waters with lemon. And THAT was the highlight of our meal here. For an appetizer, we ordered steamed gyoza. They must think that anytime you cook something in water you can call it "steamed" because these were clearly boiled. The texture was terrible and they were nearly tasteless. We ate less than half of the serving. Next came the entrees. We ordered Curry Chicken and Kung Pao Chicken. The Curry Chicken was nearly tasteless. It had only the faint scent of curry -- like someone at a nearby table was eating a curry dish. When the Kung Pao Chicken arrived, I did not believe the server had brought me the right meal. It was not in the least spicy. It was nearly flavorless. The vegetables on on the plate were nearly raw. We both ordered fried rice with our entrees. Their version of fried rice seemed to consist of nothing but steamed rice with a little bit of egg mixed in. Finally, on to the service. Our table was littered with plate after plate of food we hated. Not one inquiry into what we thought about the meal. Not one attempt to pre-bus the table, moving the food we didn't like to make room for the next course that we weren't going to like either. Stopped by here on our way back to Atlanta through Macon. it was a rainy scary night and we were attempting to escape the scare of the highway for some hit-the-spot chinese food. We got there at 930 nervous that they were going to be closed. We walked in and it was empty, but the family who owns it was super nice and stayed open just for us! This place is close to work. I make a point to go at least once a week. They do great on the typical "Chinese" dishes that are popular. The Mongolian Beef is awesome, as well as the Beef in Garlic Sauce. My brother always orders the kung pao chicken. The won ton soup is good as well. They also have a small mostly Korean menu of more authentic recipes. I love a dish they call Mandarin Chicken (pieces of fried chicken in a sweet and slightly spicy sauce, not to be confused with sweet and sour chicken). I also love the chap chae. I ordered the General Tso's Chicken. It came out in a blackish sauce that was soupy...not at all thickened up with cornstarch or xanthan gum, the way it's supposed to be. The flavor was way, way off from any General Tso's I'd ever previously had before as well. Or, at least I thought it was the sauce that tasted so weird. What I realized, however, after several bites was that the funkiness I was tasting was RANCID CHICKEN!!! Our first time visiting this restaurant and we will definitely go back. Decor is attractive, our waiter kept a close eye on us and was quick to respond to requests. The food was excellent. I had shredded chicken with garlic sauce and the chicken was absolutely melt in your mouth. They brought a simple lettuce salad with a light flavorful dressing first, then our entrees. The Hunan chicken was delicious, lots of chicken and vegetables in a great brown sauce, odd to serve a fried chicken wing with the meal, but overall was great. We regularly go back now, have tried the Kung Pao chicken, another great option in a kinda spicy brown sauce with lots of chicken, some vegetables and peanuts. I wish they would let you substitute noodles for the fried rice, which was not very good. Update: We have been here several times, now, and the food is great every time. I'm keeping this a 4-star review for inconsistency in quality on the same dish, as well as the fact that every once in a while - rarely, but it happens - there will be something that is less-than-perfect. Once, we ordered steamed dumplings and got them fried instead. Another time, I ordered the homestyle tofu (which is supposed to be in a spicy sauce), and it came out in a sweet soy-based sauce. Occasionally a server will forget to ask me which rice I want, and I will forget to specify brown rice. But such is life. I will say that I always order the same thing here, though - the homestyle tofu (or is it called family style? I forget). I've tried other dishes and not found them to be as much to my taste, but there's nothing inherently wrong with having a favorite and sticking to it. Still, I can't come here - personally - for variety. In any case, this is an all-around solid choice for reliably enjoyable American-style Chinese food. This is NOT a dim sum restaurant, and you will NOT find tripe or chicken feet (etc) on the menu. If you're coming in from the San Francisco Bay Area, you will be disappointed by the South in general. But if you're looking for standard American-Chinese fare, you can satisfy your craving here any time. Also - the desserts come out every time! Flavors rotate; we've had chocolate, coffee, and strawberry thus far. Plus, I don't know where they source them, but sometimes they have particularly great fortune cookies - crisp and not overly sweet, just what they're supposed to be. read more

I stopped in to place a to go order and to my surprise the prices are a little above average but I'm just gonna chalk that up to it being an actual restaurant and not one of those little take out places. You get a good portion of food on the lunch special. But the "fried" chicken wing was actually smoked which was disappointing (it was still good though). This use to be my favorite restaurant but they've gone downhill. They are now serving items from the menu when they know they do not have the ingredients to prepare the dish but not inform the customer by selling it anyway. It made me ill and we couldn't eat the rest of them. Only 1 of the4 orders of Mandarin Ribs were prepared correctly. When I contacted them, I was told by the Manager that he knew they were out of key ingredients but never phoned me to inform me nor did he inform my Husband when he arrived to pay for it and pick it up. This is over $40 of food. The Manager wants to credit me with only 1 out of the 4 orders when we were left with 3 orders that we could not consume! I'm owed over $30, not $10! This is crazy!!!! The orders should have been replaced! They have lost a customer that patronized them weekly for years. Always courteous and always Tipped well, even with Take-Out! read more

I've been meaning to write a yelp review on Mandarin. This is one of mine and my fiancé's favorite places to go when we are in Macon. I have eaten here about 4-5 times in the past year and each time has been good! If you go during lunch, they serve your food all on one large plate, with your rice on the same dish as your main course. (Good sized portions) If you go during dinner, they make more of an ordeal of your dining experience by bringing your meal out in courses. First, they will bring a small soup of your choice as well as a salad. Next comes a big bowl of rice on the side as well as your main entree, which I should note, is huge! Definitely plenty of food, for sure!! The food has a very authentic Chinese taste, and definitely isn't your average Chinese take out establishment. The inside of the restaurant is very quaint and dimly lit, which makes for the perfect date night. The Mandarin has been around for a very long time, and there's a reason for that! I recommend the twice cooked pork, the cashew chicken or the Mongolian chicken. You won't be disappointed! read more

The floor and carpet were sticky when you walk to the table. They had jars of hot mustard with communal spoons that they leave on the tables. The little dessert they give you in the end should be served cold, but was room temperature. I'm baffled it has a best of 2018 rating. read more

Hello excitement! Thanks to Woojoo K. I got wind of this mythical authentic menu that Mandarin offers. Please, please please...request this "Oriental Menu" and you will be very very happy! It is mostly Korean stuff, but they also have ma po tofu and some other random things that aren't on the regular menu. I got the seafood egg noodle soup and was like in love. First of all, ginormous portion is always appealing to the inner glutton. Then the delicious broth and tons of seafood and mushrooms? Yes please. I will definitely be back, and next time I'm trying the noodles with black bean sauce. Oh, word to the wise. Avoid the steamed gyoza like the plague. The Mandarin was a welcome discovery during a recent stopover in Macon while on a cross-country trip. This isn't dive-y Chinese takeout; it's a nice restaurant with a very pleasant, evocative interior. Cocktails are available. On our particular visit I ordered the special of the day, a dish called Triple Crown that included beef, chicken and shrimp in a savory brown sauce; my partner ordered General Tso's chicken. Her chicken was tasty and very spicy; I loved my meal, which also included a delicious hot-and-sour soup; one of the better ones I've tasted. It has far and away the best Chinese food in all of Middle Georgia and I should know because I'm a bit of an Asianophile and I try pretty much every Asian restaurant I see. The General Tso's Pork is absolute Heaven. The Princess Prawns are to die for. And the soup? Hands down, the absolute best hot and sour soup I've ever had. Great food and very good lunch prices.
