I have changed my mind - at least for lunch time. A couple of months ago I went at lunch. It was busy and the food on the buffet super-fresh and there wasn't anything off on any dish I tried. It may sound trite, but they have added egg tarts in won-ton wrapper cups and these are super-yummy! I now go back at least once every 2 weeks for lunch, but due to past experience, I make sure it's during busy hours. I haven't been disappointed in over a half-dozen recent trips. read more

This is by far the best Chinese affordable place in Warrenton. The buffets runs about $8 for lunch and $11 for dinner. They also have take-out, which I am less familiar with, but you pay by the pound. There are many selections that are always consistently there. Dinner offers more seafood courses but sushi is offered all day long. The honey chicken is one of the best items in the buffet. This is a good place for tasty, cheap food. Lunch Buffet runs about $6; Dinner Buffet runs about $11, and the "Thai" named foods had a good amount of spice. The sushi is hit-or-miss, I'm not a fan of their fried products in sushi. There's a lot of different choices (many fried), and if you're lucky enough to go on a weekend try the Walnut Shrimp, it's the best thing they make! The variety changes every day, so there's always something new to try! Cons: when it's busy you may need to flag down your waitress to get a drink refill, and the desserts are flavourless and bland (they do have ice cream, so that's the only saving grace dessert-wise). I'm sure some of you will say, what, 5 stars for a buffet, but honestly - come on! $11 for dinner all you can eat? Done! They have lots of different options - sushi in the back and not the stingy sushi you normally see on buffets. Soup and dumplings in the front, fruit and other things in the middle, 2 whole rows of different versions of asian dishes on the left and right. There is definitely something for everyone! As some one else mentioned - Garlic and Shrimp dish - amazing! Almost like butter chicken, delish! And the lo mein bucket was almost always emptied as soon as it was filled! Big change in a short time! I've had issues with them previously, but being a Chinese buffet fanatic, returned. Loved the improvement. Returned several times this month, each time... love the improvement. The hot and sour soup was freshly prepared and the best I've ever had. The veggie spring rolls light and crisp and clearly made in-house and not frozen... delish. The variety is very impressive, and everything I had was delicious. The General Tso used pure white meat and was heavenly; everything was heavenly. Even the service went from sub-par to friendly and excellent! KUDOS to Mandarin! I went here yesterday for lunch, despite review I did see. The food was very good. It was busy, but the service was average. Our server came and got every plate after we finished using it. They stayed on top of refilling all of the food on the buffet. One of the best buffets I have been to. The price for lunch was good for a buffet. They don't have too much of a selection with sushi. I really like this place. Sure it isn't gourmet food, but for a small Chinese buffet it has very good variety and some really tasty dishes. If you like spicy dishes, their spicy shrimp and spicy chicken is very good,. The peanut chicken is usually very good as well, and when they have tempura tilapia, that is excellent. It is nice to be able to pick a wide variety of foods that all have their own distinct flavor, and they have some very healthy options as well. My two young daughters also love this place, it is by far their favorite restaurant. They love the crab, the fried rice, lo mein and singapore noodles, plus the tempura sweet potatoes is a favorite of theirs. And then there are the sugar rolls, honey rolls, pudding, jello and many types of fruit, and let's not forget their four ice cream selections and many choices of little finger cakes, which are always a huge hit with the kids! The wait staff is very polite and attentive, the place is always clean, and the food trays are replaced quickly so everything is fresh and hot. I went today with my two kids, 5 & 12. Happy with the quality of the food and choices. My son and daughter were able to get what they wanted and even finish with a bowl of ice cream. The food here was either great or terrible. The place was not classy and I would be slightly embarassed to be the coworker that reccommended to go to this place. The staff seemed to take their time, almost like they weren't concerned that they were at work. It always bothers me when the staff makes the effort to pick up plates but not clean up the spills on the table that are right next to the plates. The sushi was chewy! There was no crab to speak of in in fried crab wonton (and it was chewy too) The lo mein noodles were dry. The dessert cakes were not tasty. My wife and I arrived at around 5 during the week - early enough to beat any dinner rush. That worked, but it was the only part of the plan that I was happy about. I won't complain about the flavor or any of the foods that I sampled on the buffet - everything was tasty. Service was acceptable...uh, no wait. It's a buffet, self service. Next. Desserts were a little bland for my liking, I like my desserts on the sweet side, and these weren't. So why two stars? What's to complain about? Cold Food. Everything that I selected from the buffet that wasn't in a sauce, was cold. EVERYTHING. There's just something unsettling about eating something that is supposed to be hot, but it isn't. I take the family here literally about twice a month. The kids love the chicken on a stick, bacon wrapped crab, bacon wrapped shrimp, and the fresh fruit bar. It is their favorite restaurant. If you arrive during their lunchtime hours (until 3pm I believe), the price per person is around $7 compared to around $12 for the evening meals. Like most buffets, if you arrive in the middle of the afternoon or at a lower traffic time, you may find the food to be not as fresh and maybe even questionable. The garlic chicken and shrimp is by far my favorite. They have a solid walnut shrimp entre that I would also recommend. Other favorites include cold shrimp and cocktail sauce, egg rolls, raw oysters (which are only offered on random days), and the sushi bar...... The sushi is all you can eat, and you don't feel pressured into tipping every time you graze it - like is common at other sushi buffets. In fact, I'm not even sure if the bar has a tip jar or not. They usually have about 10 different types of sushi out. My favorites are the Squid rolls and crab rolls. Recently they have started offering sushi with some sort of caviar on it. The sushi is very good, but make no mistake, it is not the quality you would receive if you went to an actual sushi restaurant. I am not a big soup person, but there are 3-4 different types of soup provided. Drink selections include bottled bear, sake, coke products, sweet tea, and milk in a juice box. Free refills on the sodas and tea only. Frog legs are offered on occasion, and though I love frog legs, the way they are cooked here leaves something to be desired. The crab wonton and fried chicken wings are just plain not good. The idea of scooping your own ice cream seems a bit unsanitary. I have tried a couple of their dessert cakes, and I agree with some of the other reviewers that they lack taste. In the roughly 30 times I have gone to Mandarin, I have only had issues with service once. That was a day when they obviously were short staffed, and it was an issue with drink refills. Bottom line is that this place offers good food at good prices, is family friendly, and will leave you painfully full for the rest of the evening. When my parents or siblings are in town, I usually recommend Mandarin. I would NOT host a business meeting there....or try to impress a date with a buffet.... You can pay your bill either at your table or at the register. read more

It is what it is. Don't try to turn a pan-Asian buffet into any more than that - cheap food and lots of it. As others have mentioned, timing is key to any restaurant, but especially a buffet (and a sub $10 weekday one at that). Service is pretty much on par with every Asian buffet that I have been to - everything from nice and pleasant to frowny and annoyed. As it turns out you don't really need more than drink refills at a buffet and I don't need a smile with that. Sushi is pretty good, but the rice can be a little dry sometimes. Soups can thicken up after a day in the steam tables, so I thin it down with wonton soup. Hot foods are varied and generally tasty and replenished often during peak times. Went there with a friend for lunch, after hearing rave reviews. I am pregnant, so having a buffet is amazing. We were seated and given our drinks. Got one plate of food. Couldn't finish it because it was completely cold, and you could tell it had been at least an hour since it was cooked. Food was old, chicken was dry and overcooked. Told the waitstaff about it and got laughed at to our faces. We asked for some kind of discount instead of not paying at all and were told by a manager, they cannot do anything about it. The only waitress that could somewhat speak english took 15%, which was about the cost of our drinks. We ended up paying $18.00 for food we didn't eat. Will never go here again and if i could give 0 stars i would. Terrible service, terrible food. read more

I have gone here off and on again for years. Sometimes it's pretty good, sometimes not; it's never really stellar. But still, occasionally I crave Chinese food and the variety Mandarin offers, coupled with the near-to-me-location is just what the doctor ordered. The sushi is usually sub-par: sliced-too-thin bits of fish on top of too much rice. The chef seems reluctant to fill the platters, scowls a lot, and the sushi buffet often looks a little sparse. Best Chinese food and prices in/around Warrenton. Even though I don't know about 1/3 of the buffets' items...I enjoy all of them. The meat is tender despite the heat lamps which indicates its fresh (not dry at all). They have a great variety, however, I do wish the sushi section had more choices. Customer service is great too! I've tried this place on three different occasions over a year or so. I WANT to like it but each time has been pretty awful. The first time was late lunch so I thought it was the timing but each time has been the same. The food is very mediocre and often cold and/or old. The staff is fairly rude or pretty much ignored you. I came mostly for the sushi which was not replenished very quickly and each time I had to ask if there'd be more sushi any time soon as it was pretty much out. This is probably the best Chinese food I have had in a while. The buffet was large, fresh, hot, and most important tasty. We have been to many other Chinese buffets from Winchester to Culpeper to Manassas, and my wife and I agree that this has the best buffet. I'm not a sushi fan, but my wife is and she said their fish on the sushi was much fresher than the others where we have eaten. The service was also very good. You didn't have to look for anyone to get a refill on a drink, and they took the plates away right away. I wouldn't say it is worth driving 30 minutes out of your way, but if you are in the area, this is the place to go. read more

One of the best Chinese buffets in the area. I drive 40 minutes just to go here. I'm not a sushi fan so I can't really comment on that aspect, but it looks beautiful and fresh. The Garlic Chicken & Shrimp is a dish that seems to be unique to this place that I just love. The restaurant is very clean and has a good modern feel to it. The only fault that I see is that the service is cold and distant. I don't think they are intentionally rude, its just a cultural gap that they may need to work a bit more on bridging to their american clientele.
