The food here is overpriced and overcooked. Since there is a better restaurant just down the street there's no reason to compromise.

This was our 4th week in a row ordering over 100 worth of food. This week after receiving our food we were missing 2 items. Called to get fixed. The manager on duty said they were busy for the lunch rush. We ordered at 630pm dinner rush sir... he said we weren't charged for the items. But we were been same price last 3weeks. He didn't offer to fix. Just argumentative with the way he spoke to us. We wouldn't want that food after that. I ordered $80 worth of food tonight. I picked the Szechwan Beef for myself based on the spices and the variety of veggies in the picture. It came with nothing but a ton of carrots and some jalapeños. There are red and green peppers pictured online. It was not good. The carrots over took the taste. We had stopped ordering from here a couple of years ago and decided to give them another chance. Combination lo mien was excellent, this is a full meal not a side dish. Was filled with medium sized shrimp, pieces of chicken and beef. The lo mien was flavorful and the quantity was squeezed in by the top with no room left over, felt like a couple pounds. Well worth the trip and the money was definitely reasonable! read more

Ordered the Singapore noodles that were good, along with Mongolian beef, which is my go to beef dish at Chinese restaurants. This place tops the list of WAY too many onions, not enough beef. Update the following day: The amount involved was trivial - what I wanted was for them to take this situation seriously and take steps to prevent it from happening again - which they have now done. A manager called me, offered to immediately correct any over-charging, and explained how their process is supposed to work. Watch your credit card receipt very carefully - or pay with cash. The charges on my credit card bill are mysteriously higher than the amount on my receipt. Guess they didn't like the amount I tipped - which was zero since I ordered at the counter in the restaurant and ate my food there. Padding the charges like this is unethical business practice, bordering on fraud. I called to speak with a manager about this situation, and they were nonchalant at best. read more

We have ordered from this place at least once a week for years. We loved it. But we found this big green caterpillar looking thing in our food last night, we called to let them them know so we could get our money back, and they said " yeah our vegetables have been coming with a lot of bugs due to the summer heat and we do the best we can to get them all out"..... not sure if they meant to admit that they sometimes let bugs get cooked in their food but We won't be returning customers. read more

Been eating here for years. Best Chinese take out in town. None of their ingredients are frozen and everything is prepared fresh. The lunch specials are an awesome deal if you can get there before 3pm. I like the "hunan beef" and the "twice cooked pork". The "Szechuan green beans" are also absolutely amazing! This is EASILY the best Chinese option around. They even delivered to me while I was at a friend's house 15 miles away! Besides the food, they're just generally kind people and that goes a long way these days. I used to play it safe with Chinese food because it wasn't super familiar to me (Chicken & Broccoli, Wonton Soup, Pork Fried Rice, etc.) Now I've started ordering through the menu and so far I haven't missed once. I routinely get delivery from Hunan Cafe. I live nearby, and it wouldn't come much more quickly if I were seated at a table! The food is well above average, especially the egg rolls. The staff is cordial and friendly. Highly recommended. read more

My wife and I spent years searching and searching for good Chinese food in the Warrenton/Culpeper area. Everywhere we went was mediocre at best. I don't know why it took so long, but eventually we came across Hunan Cafe, and we've been eating there at least a few times a month for the past year or so. I don't give out 5 stars lightly, and I hardly ever post reviews at all, but the quality of this cafe has inspired me to do so. The food is incredible (seriously, I don't know what their secret is.) It's always consistent; no matter how often we go, the food is nothing short of spectacular. And the prices are fair. It may seem a little pricey at first glance when you're ordering from the dinner menu, but the amount of food you get is worth way more than what you're paying. My wife and I always get at least 2-3 meals out of what we order. You rock, Hunan! read more

I pick up carryout from Hunan Cafe at least once every week. Love the place! Have never been disappointed with my meal or the service. Really like the fact that you get *fried* rice with the lunch specials and portions are large enough that I can eat a leftover meal for dinner. To me the only drawback is that Hunan Cafe Warrenton is too small to enjoy a really comfortable dine-in experience. But if it were larger I suspect the low prices wouldn't be so low. read more

Though the prices were high, if you compare, they are in line with the other restaurants. The proportions are good. We are going to get 8 meals out of 2 orders so there are no complaints there. If you see a $80 bill for these 2 orders, consider the number of meals you get. That's $10 a meal, which in todays standards, isn't bad. The quality is as good as you are going to get. For most of my adult life I've avoided carryout Chinese food, one of those cuisines that doesn't excite me and I don't have a go-to dish that I regularly crave. After some of my neighbors touted Hunan Cafe we decided to give it a shot. And since then, we've ordered their delivery numerous times and also done carry out once or twice. We've gotten a fair variety of dishes but our favorites are the moo shu pork, shrimp in lobster sauce, orange chicken and egg drop soup. The only dish we didn't particularly enjoy was the Mongolian beef or should I say the Mongolian onions with beef. With the delivery they always add way too many condiments and utensils, we now ask them to not include. And the one last thing about Hunan Cafe is that they are closed on Mondays, which we learned the hard way. read more

Its just ok... This is definitely not the best Chinese restaurant in Warrenton. Plain fried rice : bland, no seasonings, at least throw some salt in it. I'm not trying to drown my rice in soy sauce, i should of just ordered white rice then because that's all this was, white rice and something that gave it a brown color. fried dumplings : first impression they look ugly never seen a dumpling like this before and looked they just gave me fried won tons, small amount of meat which got me thinking if they gave me won tons instead, tasteless meat inside, no seasonings, very oily too. Without the the dumpling sauce these are bland and tasteless not worth the 7.95. I actually want my money back for these these are sad tasting and sad looking. Egg rolls and spring rolls: they both use the same wrap, wet mushy vegetables in side both, like vegetables weren't drained and dried properly after washing the vegetables, again not much taste without sauce, the crispy wrappers tastes great but not the vegetables. General tso chicken is edible if you like eating soggy breaded chicken and had some flavor but its ruined with the thin breading , no crisp to the chicken like they just use the same kind of thin breading like in sweet and sour chicken and is cut into smaller pieces, breading gets soggy immediately and you lose any crisp that was there , just becomes a weird soggy texture when eating, its like wet bread, sauce taste like sweet and sour sauce thickened with added chili peppers No complaints on service they take your order and bring the food to the table and thats it, you have to get your own napkins forks ect. I did notice a rack of what appeared to be cooked chicken sitting out in the kitchen, which is okay if they are monitoring the temperatures and not letting it sit out for over 4 hours, but my guess is that it was probably sitting out all morning and lunch, not a safe practice. This isn't affecting my 2 stars since i don't know for sure. Also im guessing it was the Delivery driver, when i was eating he went into the bathroom several times and was coughing and hacking up his lungs sounding really nasty and really loud could be heard in the dinning room and kitchen, the Chinese lady in the kitchen kept looking at me when the guy was coughing. She had this look on her face like why is this guy being so loud while customers are eating. This doesn't affect my score since i don't care but im sure this would bother other people while eating. Its okay if your trying to not eat any salt Not sure why Chinese restaurants are moving away from MSG when its used regularly in Chinese culture, also its approved by the FDA and taste so good. Okay look the food isn't bad, did it get me sick ? No. Its just tasteless on its own and forces you to use sauce. read more
