Worst dining experience my family and I have ever had! We went here for my brother-in-law's graduation from SUNY Cortland. We made the reservations about three months in advance thinking it would book up. They must have caught on it was graduation weekend because two months later they called saying they were changing the menu to a $75 per person prix fixe menu and they needed a $90 deposit. When we got there, we told the hostess the name for the reservation and were met with a scared and confused reaction. When she found the reservation, we were seated in a dining room with one other family seated. Soon after we sat down, we noticed the family that had already finished eating was talking amongst themselves, and the father went to the waitress to dispute his bill. We overheard him saying no one ate and it was the worst food they had ever been served. We should have listened and left right then! We decided to order and test our luck. For the appetizers, we got fried calamari, wings, meatballs, and the antipasto platter. The calamari was the first to come out, and we were all at a loss for words. The calamari came out yellow and looked like it was not cooked at all! My sister-in-law's boyfriend was brave enough to try it, and when he took a bite, it was so rubbery it snapped like a rubber band. When we addressed this with our server, she acted like it was normal! She made it seem like they just didn't like it and offered to let them select a different appetizer. The new wings came out very fast, but with blue cheese instead of ranch. When we asked a food runner for a side of ranch, she said she would ask our waitress, but it never came. After still not learning our lesson, we ordered entrees. We ordered two fettuccine Alfredos, spicy vodka tortellini, two steaks, two chicken parmigianas, and two penne alla vodka. The entrees took over an hour to come out, and while we were waiting, it got even worse. More customers started to come in, with a total of about 10 to 12 tables including ours. While waiting for our food, we saw families get seated, wait 20 minutes for water, and decide to leave before the waitress even came over. Other tables that had their food were requesting comped bills because their food was not edible. This caused one of the waitresses, who we later found out was the manager, to begin CRYING in front of customers while taking their orders. Still waiting for our food, a table got seated behind us and their experience was the same as ours. They waited 10 minutes for water cups and a pitcher of water (which was an empty Jack Daniels bottle), and the waitress almost dropped a glass on the father, which he caught. Then when they got their appetizers, the waitress knocked the same glass off the table, shattering it right next to the man's foot. One member of my party used the bathroom and found out there was no toilet paper. We immediately let the waitress know, and she stated she would have someone refill it, which never happened during our entire time in the restaurant. We came to find out ALL three bathrooms in the restaurant were out of toilet paper. We finally got our food and it was all inedible! The Alfredo tasted like water with noodles you would expect to get in a hospital. The steak had no char and was gray on the outside and rare on the inside when it was ordered medium. The spicy vodka had no taste besides the absurd amount of red pepper flakes, and the regular vodka sauce and marinara sauces were watered down with little to no taste. No one ate their food and, since we were starving, we decided to try dessert that came included with our "prix fixe" meals. During this time, the table that had glass dropped on them finally received their food, which they also found inedible, got very upset, and most of them got up and walked right out. After the food runner took our plates away, we asked her for more water for the table, to which she responded, "I can ask your waitress because I am not authorized to bring water to the table." When the new water finally came, it was in a dirty bottle and the water was slightly brown. I could go on about everything that made this by far the worst dining experience anyone in that restaurant unfortunate enough to stay for their entree had ever had, but this review is long enough. For the total of 3 hours we spent at this miserable establishment, we saw 6 tables get up and walk out. Also, if you have to use the bathroom while dining here, you may actually need to leave the restaurant and go down the road to the Motel 6 to use their restroom. So not only is this a terrible establishment with slow service and awful food, it is also a scam. read more

Food was Ehhh. Not what I expected, I probably set the bar too high. They were short staffed as our amazing waiter is really the bartender. I love broccoli rabe and ordered it with the grilled mushrooms but quickly sent it back. I ordered the bolognese pasta which was lacking in flavor. The bruschetta was delicious as was their complimentary limoncello shot. The ambiance is great but food not so much. Maybe it was an off night but I probably won't return. Do NOT come here for a special occasion!! Came here for dinner after my family member's college graduation... the entire experience at this restaurant was so atrocious that it put a complete damper on the mood of what was supposed to be a congratulatory event. First of all, they called us back days AFTER making the reservation to demand a $10 per person deposit. Fine, whatever, we put a card down. We get there and it turns out it's not their full menu! They're only offering a $75 per person prix fixe menu, which wasn't shared up front- ridiculous, but we already had the reservation, and they already made us pay, so we stayed. What unfolded was a circus of poor service, horrible food, and price gouging.... Universally, everyone at the table agreed all of the food was terrible. The pictures of the food on the website and in the reviews was NOT what we received. Rubbery, barely cooked "calamari" (when it came to the table, we all stared at it in disbelief, I wish I was joking).... Watery alfredo... steaks that were so chewy and grey they were inedible. The waitress was nice but the staff was obviously ill prepared for a full house. They could not keep up with the volume. We watched at LEAST 3 full tables of 5-7 people get up and leave in the middle of their meals. When we asked for water, the food runner (who was carrying plates stacked on top of themselves so the bottom of the plates were touching the food on the next plate ) told us no! She actually said she wasn't allowed to bring us water. When the table behind us got up and left, the girl who had just graduated was sobbing. The waitress running drinks, who clearly had been fielding complaints from customers all night, was sobbing while running drinks to every table. The entire dinner was a shit show of such epic proportions... we kind of just sat there in awe of it all and just laughed. To top it all off, the $75 per person PRICE GOUGING was insane! The overcharge from their typical prices, while offering what I can only imagine was less than their typical standard of food, with a ridiculous standard of service.... The entire experience was so negative. We drove 5 hours both ways to celebrate a special occasion, and the wheels came off the bus in such a dramatic way around us that it was impossible to imagine a worse dining experience, unless we were literally shot robbed stabbed or poisoned. read more

Tonight, I easily had the best Italian food I've ever tasted (and I've vacationed in numerous towns in Italy). My wife had the Priestchokers Abruzzo, while I ordered Rigatoni in a Pomodorro sause with meatball. Our appetizer was the Classic Bruscheta. The drinks we ordered were perfect. The flavor of everything we had was excellent with every ingredient in the appetizer and main dishes extremely well balanced and integrated. The service was amazing with Alicia attending to our four year old granddaughter and getting down to her level to take her order and listen to her. We went to Mangia for a birthday celebration, party of six. No one had an issue with making a dish selection. They even have gluten-free options. I enjoyed the pistachio crusted salmon. It was cooked to perfection! The risotto was delish! The veggies were a little bland, but that would be my only complaint. A couple of pizzas were ordered with no complaints and my husband devoured the crab and scallop stuffed flounder. The service was great! The waitress (Sophia H) was very accommodating and sweet. Everything else was a horror. They couldn't find my reservation, had to get our own plates, calamari came out not cooked, and the pasta tasted as though it was boiled in dirty water. Tables were not set and we had to move the tables. 3 of the 5 entrees were served and after 20 minutes the rest of our party was still waiting. We returned the food that had been brought out, asked for the owner and the bill. Owner refused to speak to us and we were presented with a bill for a soda, 1 appetizer and bread. Had dinner here last night with high expectations but left fairly disappointed. The cauliflower appetizer arrived in a ramekin (i was told by the waitperson to be careful bc the dish was hot) but it was room temperature. The dish turned out to be pretty tasty and upon request, the wait person did apologize and brought it back to the kitchen to be warmed in the microwave. My partner ordered the Utica greens appetizer which almost had no taste at all, but at least it was hot. Our entrées of tortellini and linguine with clam sauce were just so so, nothing really distinctive or distinguishing to set them apart from any other red sauce restaurant. Our waitperson was very sweet and attentive and kept checking in on us. At the end of the meal, my partner and I decided we would return to this restaurant to try their pizzas, but will pass on the entrées in the future. Was in need if a good sit down meal after too many fast food stops during our trip. We were riding around trying to find a decent looking place to try out and there it was. With a name like Mangia (Italian for eat) restaurant, that's just what we wanted to do, go figure. The restaurant was very nice inside and we were seated right away. The staff were wonderful. Extremely friendly and attentive to our needs The first thing to jump out at me was the Veal saltimboca which I ordered. First came out the warm Italian bread slices with their delicious oil dip. The meal came next looking excellent, and it was. The Veal was cooked to just the right tenderness and the mushroom ravioli a perfect side. Will definitely eat there again when in town. read more

Terrible Experience- we had no place settings (asked several times before I had to go get them myself). Waited almost an hour for an appetizer that came out not cooked (and it was fish). Food came out individually and only part of the family received their meal. The penne vodka had no taste and pasta with oil & garlic, they forgot to add the oil and garlic. Neither meal was eaten more than 2 bites. Food was returned and we canceled the rest of the order. Asked to speak to the chef, but he refused to come to the table. Went to this restaurant based on mixed reviews so my girl and I decided to see what it was about for ourselves. Needless to say we were unamused and appalled by the quality of service and our dishes. Given it was valentines day, i can understand the wait time. But an hour and a half wait for a chicken marsalla is appalling. We had to return our food and get them to remove it from our bill. The staff was very polite about it but the food was definitely not polite to our taste buds. Salty, mushy, rubbery, it was all from a freezer. I have to say I don't understand the negative reviews. We've been here twice now, two days apart (yes we liked it that much) and it was excellent. The first night we came with two friends and two of us got the ribeye which was excellent. Perfectly cooked, hot, the side of green beans was amazing. How can green beans be amazing? Come here and find out. The branzino was also terrific (one of my husbands favorites anywhere). We began with the artichoke appetizer and they were great. Just enough. We finished the meal with afogatos. If you're Italian (we are) you understand. Tonight just the hubs and I. We began with the steamed clams. Not usually wild about the larger clams but these were very good. I got the eggplant parm. Tender, the sauce was delish and I ate the whole thing. Hubs had the veal vino Bianco, which was tender and so flavorful. We asked for a side of rapini (again, if you're Italian...) instead of the pasta and they were very accommodating. There's plenty on the menu for vegetarians, and just eliminate the cheese and the vegans are good to go. Justice was a gem and we'll ask for her next time. Even the water, served ice cold in old wine bottles, was terrific. What else is there to say? Want to try everything on the menu. read more

Server was great. Bartender was not good. Could not make a mojito. She tried twice. Understanding she might be learning but she didn't have the personality and was indifferent. These owners clearly do not understand where to invest their money. Who cares if you have an electric scooter with your business name on it in the lobby. And sure the high end remodel is absolutely beautiful, but first and foremost your customer is going out looking for good food. You need to invest in a chef, and invest in high quality products or you are bound to flounder. I don't want to pay big bucks for cheese flavored water over half dried, tough tortellini. If I wanted that I would use a Kraft Mac and cheese packet over grocery store tortellini. Then to top it off they charge a $5 sharing fee! That's if you share your dish you get charged an extra $5. I never share my dish as it is the perfect time to eat something those in your house wouldn't like, but I saw that on the menu and just thought that was absurd! They claim the sharing fee is because their portions are so big, but there really isn't that much to them. Then there's the service, the one gentleman who brought out our appetizers spilled the calamari across the table, said a quick "oops sorry" and literally ran away. I will say though the primary waitress did a great job. She is very professional and provided good service, even when she had to intervene to resolve for her colleagues. She has worked at other area restaurants in the past and always does a nice job. I hope she finds a better place to work soon. If the food was as good as the service she provided, I would sure come back, but the chef is just not worth the hearty prices. Needless to say, we will save our money and go elsewhere! Dinner at Mangia Italian Restaurant, Cortland, NY Chef Fabio vs. The Diners I am always hesitant to dine at Italian restaurants as I am of Italian heritage and we have the best at home. But, out of town with friends, and, when in Rome: off we went. I don't trust red sauces unless they're cooked on my or my son's stove. So, I ordered the Mari & Monti: shrimp, fresh clams, asparagus, wild mushrooms, grape tomatoes, in garlic wine sauce over linguine--a version of my go-to meal in Italian restaurants and one which I enjoy very much. Our dinners arrived: the shrimp on my plate, looked and tasted like the pink and the flavor had been bleached out of it. The sauce was watery and ignored the linguini. If those mushrooms came in from the wild, they arrived via can. Bland reached new heights with the food in that dish. I picked out a few vegetables, ate a few clams and was done. Across the table, my friend called the waitress over to announce: this is the worst chicken marsala I've ever eaten (she's a big fan of chicken marsala). Not only had another flavorless dish landed on our table, the chicken was so tough, it couldn't be cut with a knife. After taking away the plate, the very kind waitress asked what my friend would like to replace it. Struggling with the menu, she asked for a small salad. The waitress returned a short time later, so apologetic, "I don't want to be this person" who tells the customer: the chef won't come and talk to you, the chef says that the chicken marsala is 'fine' and the chef denies the comp of a small salad. Evidently, Chef Fabio enjoys absolute authority at Mangia Italian Restaurant. To be fair, two others at the table said their food was 'fine' including another plate of chicken marsala whence the chicken was amenable to a knife. Faint praise from the last critic: "it's okay. Kind of bland but okay", he said of his plate of spaghetti with red sauce. In addition, we were in an Italian restaurant and there was no bread or cheese on the table. It had to be requested. In summary, we experienced a thoroughly unpleasant and largely tasteless dining experience at Mangia Italian Restaurant. Our bill did not reflect the quality of the food served.
