Tonight we went with nostalgic dishes that we not fussy but full of flavor. The spaghetti arrabiata was bold in flavor and not shy with spice. I appreciated the simplicity that each course offered with the intentional touch that you can only find from someone with a great pallet. While the specials are a reason to return the core menu creates raving fans from the clip. Metuchen has a truly authentic Italian spot that is not to be overlooked. I've been to Mangia once to dine in for dinner and twice my employer treated us to a special lunch from there. The ambiance is very simple and elegant, they have a nice enclosed outdoor seating area which is where we dined for dinner. Definitely make a reservation before coming, I saw a family get turned away because they were booked that night. Dinner was very enjoyable, everything tasted incredibly fresh and good quality. In addition to pasta for dinner we ordered roasted vegetables which were cooked to perfection. For my ordered lunch I got a sandwich on both occasions. The quality of the meat is top notch and the combination of flavors was spot on. The focaccia bread is my favorite part though, perfect texture and a nice slightly salty flavor that compliments the sandwiches nicely. Now for my favorite- the caramel panna cotta... it's a very generous portion and I am unable to have it in one sitting (I'm no lightweight, this is just so decadent and there is so much!). The creamy sweet panna cotta mixed with the slight smokiness of the caramel, ahhh magnificent! This is one of my favorite desserts from anywhere. read more

We just had dinner for 6. Atmosphere was nice, wait staff was very attententive. The issue is we informed the restaurant of a black pepper allergy, they told us that will not be a problem, and anything on the menu could prepared without black pepper. We'll, that was the furthest from the truth. Every entree, had black pepper, there was no attempt by the kitchen to try to accommodate even though we were assured THAT it would not be a problem​. VERY DISAPPOINTING. Safe to say we will not be returning. In fact, I am putting this out there, restaurants and their owners need to be honest and upfront when a patron has notified the establishment of a food allergy. Their response should be honest and accurate. Certainly hope the owner reads this and takes note. If you can't accommodate, then say you can't. Arriving for a reservation and being informed you are unable to accommodate and only one pasta dish, no protein could prepared is totally unacceptable, especially for a higher end establishment. Took Mom here for Mother's Day and they were kind enough to seat us without reservations. The upscale atmosphere was appropriate for the occasion and we thoroughly enjoyed our lunch. Camila provided excellent service as we ordered a couple appetizers including the coccoli which was like a deconstructed pizza (delicious!) and the Tagliere Toscano which i'd compare to an Italian charcuterie board (also incredible) and for the main course we went with the Ahi Tuna over spinach which was the icing on the cake for our meal! I spotted this next door when I visited Phattra Thai and looked it up on Yelp. It seemed like a popular and well rated Italian spot in the Metuchen. Since we didn't want to be waiting we made a reservation on Resy. We got a seat outdoor but it was covered and had fans and seemed very comfortable . Tuscan chef and authentic northern Italian is what I was expecting . We starterd off with their house bread and Zucchini blossom stuffed with ricotta and Toscano fries . Zucchini blossom looked very pretty and was quite creamy . The pea purée was needed to pump up the flavor . Fries were more wedge kind with Italian seasoning which was dense. House bread was not warm but tasted ok. For our entrees I was eyeing the Cacio e Pepe and we also wanted to try the Pappardelle Meat Ragu . Both fell flat as the pasta was undercooked . Cacio e Pepe 's cheese (sauce) was the saving grace , but it's cheese so can't go terribly wrong tWe have dined at quite a few great Italian restaurants and do know al dente . But this was rubbery and chewy which made it difficult to enjoy the dish.Meat Ragu was too sour and didn't have any other flavor except tomatoes. Tiramisu, the Italian classic dessert gone wrong is how our meal ended . Wasn't airy and light as it's expected to be and didn't pack the needed coffee punch ! Not my kinda Italian food .. Just a note that they don't serve wine by the glass . They only serve wine as a full or half bottle. Walked into the restaurant on a Friday night in hopes that we could be seated without a reservation. This spot has been on my list so I was glad to finally make it. We had to wait a bit but luckily the person working the front desk was super helpful! I loved the ambiance, it's the perfect date night spot. We got the gnocchi and the famous Cacio e Pepe. The cacio was great but gave me a bit of an Alfredo sauce vibe because it was super creamy but still great. Usually they're less creamy and more just pepper and parm. The gnocchi was amazing, comes with a creamy sauce as well so both together felt heavy but the gnocchi melted in your mouth. For the app, we tried the burrata which was good but not the best! You can buy wines here from their wine menu but they're also byob and there's a liquor store right across the street so stop by before! read more

Saw this place had good reviews and after moving into the area, we wanted to explore Metuchen for the first time. We were celebrating our wedding anniversary today. Ambiance - I really enjoyed the decor. Earth tones, greens and wood. Lots of plants. The lighting was nice and not overbearing. The little tiny lamps on the table actually did a great job of allowing you to see well in front of you while keeping the right vibe with the rest of the lighting. Seats were really comfortable too. Service - admittedly I'm not a big "service guy" in the sense that, as long as you're not rude or forgetful, people are people and we all do our thing in our own way. That being said, I thought the service was great. Let us take our time, knew just when to come over. Overall a great experience. Food - The octopus appetizer was very good. I do prefer my octopus with a bit more char to it though. I'd give it a 7.6 for flavor and 9.1 for quality. Let's call it an 8.3. Super tender. Scallop app was brilliant. Would never have thought peas would work with scallops but they did. Notoriously hard to cook perfectly, they were as tender as could be. Perfectly cooked. We'll go 8.9 here. Entrees - We basically split the two dishes. The cod over risotto and the wild boar papardelle. The fish was right on. The mustard sauce and the lemon were brilliant when paired with the creamy risotto. Really well balanced. The fish itself was flaky and moist. 8.7 As for the papardelle - woah. This one is special. Apparently they cook this sauce for 10 hours? Don't think of it as a tomato-heavy mixed meat ragu. No, this is full of warming spices... it tastes like fall. Like someone went out back, bagged a wild boar and someone cooked it down for an entire day with almost a Moroccan-reminiscent blend of spices to make this sauce that just works so well with the full-bodied taste of the wild boar. Brilliant. 9.2 We even had cappuccinos and dessert. Excellent in that dept, as well. We will be back here. This is as as unique a take on Italian food as I've had in NJ. read more

It's a beautiful restaurant. The staff are friendly and attentive. We had a nice appetizer salad. That's it. My husband's cacio e pepe pasta was undercooked - not al dente but undercooked, and the cream sauce was split and curdled. I ordered the "famous" florentine steak - it was underseasoned, overcooked and tough. Definitely not worth the $55 price tag on the menu. The waiter was very kind and attentive. Newly remodeled on the corner of Main and Hillside in the heart of Metuchen is a great little spot that snuck under my radar for so long. The space is warm and inviting with lots of seating room and a cozy bar in the front. We started with the grilled octopus appetizer which was a hit for everyone at the table. It was served with a nice warm potato and a side of bread with olive oil dip. We also ordered a bunch of pasta dishes to share, everything came out perfect. The pasta here has a nice bite texture to it that you expect from fresh pasta, cooked al dente of course. Our server was on it constantly checking on us to make sure we were taken care of. You'll find plenty of Italian restaurants within a mile radius of here but few can offer you this level of pasta. A 5 star hit! Comfortable casual atmosphere inside the restaurant and a very pleasant outside seating area. We wound up inside as there was nothing available outside. We were glad we decided to stay and eat inside as the food and service were quite good. We both had the Caesar Salad. Pretty large so we could have gotten away with splitting one. The dressing was of the creamy variety and the salad itself was loaded with cheese. In fact too much for my wife's taste but fine with me. My wife had the Bronzino and thoroughly enjoyed. I had the larger sized Tagliere Toscano, from the appetizer menu, as my main course. The dish contained 3 or 4 different cured meats, 3 cheeses, and 3 bruschettas (mushroom, pesto, tomatoes). If you want to get an idea where of how authentic this place is look the restaurant up specifically on Instagram. The chef and his staff make every ounce of food fresh. Handmade pasta to fresh deserts. The one thing I forgot to do was to take a picture of dinner because it was out of this world. They have seasonal menus. One of the best things from this place is the dessert. The panna cotta is probably the best desert I have ever had. I've been to Italy and this dessert is way better! I threw an event here and could not have better things to say about the event manager Perrine, the chef and all the staff at Mangia. They were super accommodating and helpful pre-event and throughout the day. The chef even came out to give his thoughts and we changed a few things based on his suggestions and it went over well with guests. I normally look forward to large party food but everything was spectacular. Because I was hosting I regret not being able to enjoy all of the foods more. The standouts were the pesto and different crostinis, the cacio e Pepe, the salmone and we just did the tiramisu and everyone loved it. Everything was fresh and delicious. It is a byob so of course +++ for that. The food was delicious. I will add that they don't substitute anything so what you see is what you get. I wanted a dish made with white sauce instead of red however it was a no. I still found something I could have and it's was good. All in all great meal there. #Thankful Unbelievable Italian food on Main Street. TAGLIERE TOSCANO ($24 to share) - Selection of imported Tuscan cured meats and cheeses, an assortment of bruschetta. Definitely recommend this appetizer to share with the table. We had prosciutto, salami, and mortadella (I think) along with Parmesan, some short of goat cheese (I think), and one other cheese that had a spice kick to it. All the cheese was pasteurized, so even my sister who was pregnant could try some. We also had three different bruschetta - tomatoes (fresh fresh fresh! and our favorite), mushrooms, and pesto. POLPO E PATATA ($20) Fresh grilled octopus with potatoes. The heavily seasoned octopus pairs well with the slightly fried potatoes. I just wish there a bit of freshness and acidity (couldn't taste the lemon) to balance out the saltiness on the plate. CAPESANTE ($18) Pan-seared scallops sitting on a bed of peas with a lemon and garlic sauce and topped with microgreens. You will enjoy the lightness of this appetizer if you are a scallops fan. A few things that they could approve on were that some of the scallops were a tad overcooked and the sauce could be seasoned more. Similar to the octopus appetizer, I wish there was a bit of freshness and acidity (couldn't taste the lemon or garlic) to bring out the freshness of the scallops. Still enjoyed the dish! TAGLIATELLE ALLA BOLOGNESE ($20) Homemade Tagliatelle with traditional veal ragù. A classic that is done well here at Mangia Toscano. The pasta was al dente along with a rich and tomato-ey veal ragu for the perfect comfort food. Highly recommend! CARBONARA AL TARTUFO ($35) Favorite dish at the table! It was a classic carbonara (creamy, eggy pasta with a bit of saltiness from the pancetta) elevated with truffle oil and freshly shaved truffle. Definitely a decadent dish, but well worth it! SPAGHETTI ALLE VONGOLE ($32) Another special of the night. Spaghetti with clams was perfectly cooked. You can really taste the freshness of the clams. Highly recommend if you like a fresh and light Italian dish. PASTA CACIO E PEPE ($27) Another decadent dish, which is essentially cheese and pepper pasta dish. The pasta was al dente and the sauce was just creamy enough for me. They did offer a special that night as well to have the dish cooked in truffle oil and freshly shaved truffle on top. Shoutout to our waiter, Ben. He was spectacular and went above and beyond for us. Firstly, he made a cork holder with the foil around the wine bottle. That was super cool! He also made some great recommendations for our meal. Secondly, I had originally ordered the Ravioli Di Mare (homemade ravioli with shrimp), but the dish felt off to me. The ravioli filling, essentially the shrimp, did not taste fresh and may have gone bad (there was a short electricity outage in Metuchen from the tropical storm). He had sent it back and put in the order for the cacio e pepe, which came out very quickly. He checked up on us periodically and made sure we had everything we needed. Everything from the ambiance of a summer sunset to the service to the great homemade food made our night. We felt safe dining outdoors. Hey hey Adventurers! I LOVE this place, especially the area it's in with the outdoor dining. I got to grab dinner with a girlfriend a while back and I am so freaking happy I did. We ordered the burrata appetizer, with a bottle of house white. I think the burrata would have been fantastic if they included toasted olive oil bread. We found out after dinner that you this is uniquely a BYOB and they sell Jersey wine only. Which is not normal? At least from what I was aware. Next time we know to bring our own since we do love a good glass (or two) of wine. My date ordered the sea bass special which looked phenomenal! The plating at this place is so well done, nothing is overwhelmed by extra plate space. I ordered the cacio de pepe fettuccine, which did not come with truffles. I see it posted but I am not sure if this was an option or standard? I'd have loved to have tried it that way, but the overall dish was delicious.
