I really love this restaurant. Not because the food is the best in the world or because it' the best dining experience I've ever had. I love Mangialardo's because it's like stepping into a time capsule--into a style of restaurant that is totally gone in large cities, and almost gone everwhere else. Don't get me wrong; the food is excellent and the service is always perfect, but you won't find gluten-free pasta or modern fusion dishes on the menu (although gluten-free bread is available). It's a good, standard, Southern Italian menu, such as was ubiquitous at American Italian restaurants in the nineteen sixties, with prices that are unusually low. Set unassumingly near the tracks, where it has been for the forty years I've been going there (and I suspect for its entire 92 years of existence), this place is run by the third generation of Mangialardos. This is not a surprise; walking in, you will see a bar side with booths and a dining room side with tables. Italian-themed artwork, and a large, lighted portrait of Nonna Mangialardo grace the walls. Low ambient lighting, warm-colored carpet and decor, and Jerry Vale singing "Al di Là." What could be better? Don't go to Mangialardo's to satify or show off your worldly culinary tastes; go to Mangialardo's to experience what Mangialardo's is and has been for nearly a century. Where can I start. I travel often to try different restaurants and this is a negative star. Yelp needs to enable a trash button.In fact I only selected the star to write a review. 1. No one greeted us at the door for 8 mins. We were wandering the restaurant trying to figure out if we wait or do we seat ourself. All the staff was just staring at us. A customer assisted us. 2. The server had an attitude. Like a really nasty attitude one. Never had this type of experience but I'm pretty sure it was racial. Established in 1933, and I'm sure she still has the mentality of how things were back then. Significant difference in how she treated me compared to the rest of my party. Cringy but again,if the bill was on me, this place would NOT get my money. However I kept it professional as this was the purpose of the dinner. 3. Food was.... Food. Took 30+ mins to come out. And this was just the salad. Cheese bread was disgusting. Drinks were weak.. probably just mine based treatment/ service. 4. The waiter never came back after giving us the check. Waited 25 mins before we went to the bar to pay. Only reason I stayed was because I was with others and did not drive. I would not recommend this place to anyone. The rest of the town was nice. Other restaurants were great.This one did not feel welcoming. Take your money anywhere else. Ambiance- worst restaurant experience. When you walk in everything is gloomy. Think of the worst funeral home carpet.. they put it on the walls.Gave funeral home vibes but a funeral home was more welcoming. Place is a has been. Don't waste your time or money. There nothing good to be said about the place. I was a bit suspicious being there on a Saturday night at 7:30 and only a few tables. Place was warm, they had the AC off. Service left a lot to be desired. She was essentially an order taker and delivery person. Never offered another drink, never checked to see if food was ok. although she did have time to sit at the bar. The porkchops had no flavor an were like chewing on your sneaker. Pasta sauce was red water. No flavor. Pasta was not cooked in salted water, rookie mistake. Pasta water has to be salted ! you can't salt pasta after it's cooked! Chicken had no flavor either. An OK Italian restaurant that might be given 5 stars by the locals who clearly have never eaten at an authentic Italian restaurant in NYC. Food quality and presentation are about would you would expect at a pizzeria. I ordered veal parm, and I got what I paid for and what I expected. I was told by a 5 star chef, if you have to smother the dish in lots of gravy or sauce, you are probably hiding the lower quality and taste of the meat. There must have been a half a jar of sauce on the veal, that I had to scrap off. If you have dinner there and go in with the expectation of being disappointed, you might be surprised. Have heard their white (garlic) pizza is exceptional. Big deal. Most people can prepare that simple pizza in their own home. Waitresses were pleasant, but the owner was an unpleasant character. Service terrible ! They only ever have 2 old waitresses that can't keep up on weekends. The water glasses are so small you are lucky if you get 3 sips. Make sure you bring cash because you can not charge here. If you want lasagna come when they open or they run out in a hour. Too dark just way too dark. read more

A friend and I went last night - both ordered the lasagna. I got a glass and f wine and it was about 3 ounces - but of course I as charged the full price. The house salad was not substantial, even for a side salad. Miserly and swimming in Italian dressing. The lasagna was great and I always love the little pizza strips they bring out with the bread. Let's just say I really found a soft spot for this place. The bread was sliced Wonderbread, the Chianti was boxed Franzia. And I honestly loved every minute of it. In New York City, it probably would fold before the first lunch shift was over. This joint probably doesn't deserve 4 stars, but for whatever reason I fell in love with it. My gnocchi were cooked perfectly with the sauce tasting just like a home cooked meal, and the meatballs were clearly homemade, delicious- and this is coming from a New Yorker! Mangialardo's of old was a great place for homemade italian food and a place that you could look forward to some very fine cuisine. We were extemely disappointed with our dinner and remind readers to review the most recent postings and not postings of old. We were served salads that were literally the white bottom of the head with absolutely no green lettuce at all. Instead they smothered it with dressing. Our party of 5 barely ate any of it. We all got Italian dishes and it was very apparent it was reheated pasta via microwave and covered with off the shelf sauce. If you tipped your plate the sauce ran like water. Again, the 5 of us barely ate our entree and did not want to take any of it home My mother who is 88 insisted on paying the bill and did not want me to make a fuss over the terrible food so she wasted around $120 (including tip which she never should have left) for meals that were only partially eaten. I am not sure but given what we ordered, they likely also had expensive prices for a beer and a glass of wine. The waitress didn't even care that we didn't eat much of our salads, didn't eat much of our main course, and did not want to take anything home with us. Any decent restaurant would be concerned about their customers satisfaction and would perhaps adjust the bill or have the manager try and find out what was wrong. I now understand why it was so easy to get a reservation for 5 on a Friday night at 6:00. There was only one other table of 2 in the dining room. What used to be a landmark or "hidden gem" in Sayre is now almost of poor fastfood style of Italian food. What used to be an evening of fine food is now a huge disappointment. From the time we got there to when we left was less than 45 minutes which should illustrate that this is no longer fresh cooked food but warmed up premade from the freezer, Do not go there, and do not believe older postings from the past. I ate in the restaurant last night with my family. It is a little outdated with the interior design but comfortable and nothing broken. very dimmed lighted and low music, I had a hard time seeing the menu without my phone light. the service was really good and timely. The food was really good with an excellent sauce. the size and portion of food was excellent for the prices. The only thing we didn't get or offered was oil fro the bread. I would have given a 5 stars if I could have seen the menu and the interior was a little updated. Friendly staff and great food with good service, I would definitely recommend eating here. read more

The Owner of the place is very unprofessional and uses vulger language towards his patrons. We waited over 2 hours for our meal.....which we never received. When we politely inquired about the status of our food, the owner said there were busy, and if we didn't like it, we could leave. He was visibly angry, used inappropriate language, and conducted himself very poorly. I wouldn't recommend this to anyone. Whether the food was good or not. Very friendly staff but very outdated decor. Salads were only lettuce tomato and onion. Blue cheese was a pricey addition to your salad @ $1.50. Veal parmigiana was plentiful and delicious. This place is a great Itialian restaurant. Everything's no on the menu is good accept for the shrimp scampi. My wife's order didn't have much shrimp and that's a big turn off for us. Everything else that we have had there was really food. The garlic pizza strips that come out with the gonads Itialian bread are heavenly. Fillet mignon is always good here. If you want the best garlic pizza on the planet, go here. While traveling home from a 3 hour trip, we attempted to find a restaurant in Binghamton for Italian food. After getting ignored and having the worst experience ever at Little Venice, we decided it would be worth driving another half hour towards home to get food to-go from Mangialardo's. We have not been to Mangialrdo's in a few years, but intend to start going back more often. I know the pasta, specialties, and sauses are awesome from my many experiences in the past years. I have always heard how amazing the garlic pizza is and the one time I have had it was after it was purchased frozen and baked at home and it was delicious! But I must say that may be the only way I have their food again. Me and my husband walked in after a guessing game as the entrance(s) are not marked. We walked into the left and right into a very dark quite bar. A gentleman sitting there says excuse me and asks where we want to sit. We opted for the book right behind him and immediately decided we should move. It was so quiet in the bar area you could hear a pin drop and the crickets outside. Not one of the other 10+ people were talking. We asked to move to the dinning room and while there was some chatter it was also so dark I felt like I needed a flash light to read the menu. Open the curtains and let some light in. This is definitely a old supper club atmosphere. We ordered the chicken parm and that was great. The salad was just ice berg, a tomato slice and two onion slices. The bread ok and the garlic sticks yummy. The service was almost non existent especially when we were waitin 25 minutes for our bill. We also hear a waitress say I'll get their drinks but I'm not taking that table..... Doubtful we will be back - just order the garlic pizza to go! read more

The interior is old-school Italian and I love it. People complain about the owner being abrasive but he's never been anything but nice to me and my family. The best garlic pizza in the world. Hands down. I have been eating this pizza for over 20 years and every time I make it back home from San Diego, I must stop here before leaving. If you go, do not pass it up. I have had it with crab meat and onions added, too. The regular pizza is pretty good too. This is an old family owned restaurant with an old-timey menu and old-fashioned attention to quality. My wife and I enjoyed excellent, flavorful meals (chicken marsala and veal scallopine) served in generous portions, cooking the likes of which we have not tasted in about 40 years in a restaurant. If you know what good Italian home cooking tastes like, and can overlook the relative lack of (non-fried) seafood offerings and the virtually non-existent wine list, you will be very happy dining here. read more

There is something about old establishments with original decor that I can't resist. The bar is just plain cool with original tin ceiling. It's like I just walked into 1933 when the place first opened. After standing at the entrance for 11 minutes, a miserable old man seated us in the dining room despite my request for the open booth in the bar area. The Garlic pizza with the bread plate is fantastic. The fried calamari was reminiscent of Burger King onion rings. Loads of breading but actually not bad and served with cocktail sauce. The salad is basic but good. I had the Italian Sausage special and a side of spaghetti. The marinara was exquisite. Despite other reviews to the contrary, this is the perfect sauce. A little tart, lots of tomato flavor and just plain delicious. The Italian sausage was very satisfying. This place isn't fine dining but it's dining at an almost budget price. The decor is honest to god original that many new establishments strive to emulate. Service moves slightly slower than the speed of smell and the staff couldn't give a rat's ass whether you're there or not. Apparently it's been that way since 1933. Be advised that they won't let you put a tip on your credit card which is mind boggling so tips are optional if you happen to have cash on you. Given all the negatives, it was still an enjoyable experience and a must stop if you're in the area. read more
