TLDR: A good stop for sweets that you know the locals love and support. I've been here a few times, and I'm yet to try a flavor that I don't like. Hand packed quart: I love that this is $15/16. In a world where pints are edging closer to $13, it's nice to still know a place that rewards you when buying more from them. I like how the ice cream looks soft enough off the scooping area that the person hand packing the quart can do it relatively quickly. Chocolate: I think it's above average, but I won't question it if you think that it's just fine. Chocolate for me has always been about finding that line of "not too sweet" and finding that hint of bitterness to get you down from that sugary high. I feel that this place finds that balance well. Ambiance: The place is dated, borderline vintage. I think they should lean into it, and I think they do. Service: Professional, quick, and what you want when buying dessert. While I've been here a few times this is my first formal review. I came with my family one Sunday evening on a hot July day, bypassing several chains on the way, including the new(er) Salt and Straw across the street. The inside is packed to the brim with sweets, small toys, and people, much like a candy shop of old. After reaching the front of the winding line our family shared a Banana Split ($13) - three scoops of ice cream, a split banana, hot fudge, a single dry topping (we chose coconut), whipped cream, and a trio of cherries - about as classic as it comes. The ice cream was good but not exceptional. The chocolate and strawberry were fairly generic, but I liked the third scoop of banana foster ice cream which had a nice banana kick. I doubt this ice cream is home made. The complements and construction to the sundae were great, however, and the flavors came together well. As I would hope for a location like this, the staff are local youths who served with patience and passion. In cases throughout the store are several of their other specialties - ice cream cookie sandwiches, dipped frozen bananas, and more - inviting repeat visits. Prices are elevated but not crazy for such a trendy area, although I would say with the middling quality of the ice cream a couple dollars less would be fine. Overall, Manhattan Beach Creamery is a local landmark worth at least a single visit for anyone in the area. If you can get past the generic, if a little boring, ice cream flavor and rampant commodification of the interior, you'll find a classic ice cream parlor with great service and history. I've been to this place many times -- every time I go to Manhattan Beach, I believe. Today, I tried the strawberry flavor. You can see the actual bird of strawberries in the ice cream scoop. And their scoops aren't tiny -- they are the full, overflowing scoop of ice cream. The staff is helpful and friendly. You can try some flavors before you decide what you want to get. Sometimes you just want classic flavors done right, and that's exactly what they offer (no over-the-top combinations, just really good ice cream). The ambience is clean, there was a bit of a line but it moves quickly, and they have lots of flavors to choose from. I come here for one thing only, their dipped chocolate banana. 10/10! There is a real scarcity when it comes to chocolate dipped banana availability anywhere. So Manhattan Beach Creamery has been my literal lifeline to them for years. Best part they have dark and milk chocolate options! They also have sprinkles and chopped almonds along with plain dark chocolate and milk chocolate. The chopped almonds and sprinkles do come in milk chocolate only I believe. Its about 10$ now I think. I literally do not mind the price because they are that good and have a generous coating of chocolate. Came in here last night and got the butter pecan flavor ice cream. It was delicious but it melted within about 3 minutes. It wasn't even that hot outside. Such a staple when coming down to Manhattan Beach. They have such a large selection of treats and desserts that look divine. Their selection of ice cream flavors is unique and you can tell the ice cream is well made and good quality. They were pretty busy today which makes parking difficult.
