Manhattan Beach Creamery is an independent, local Manhattan Beach landmark worth a stop for anyone visiting the area - and multiple visits if they are to your taste. While I've been here a few times this is my first formal review. I came with my family one Sunday evening on a hot July day, bypassing several chains on the way, including the new(er) Salt and Straw across the street. The inside is packed to the brim with sweets, small toys, and people, much like a candy shop of old. After reaching the front of the winding line our family shared a Banana Split ($13) - three scoops of ice cream, a split banana, hot fudge, a single dry topping (we chose coconut), whipped cream, and a trio of cherries - about as classic as it comes. The ice cream was good but not exceptional. The chocolate and strawberry were fairly generic, but I liked the third scoop of banana foster ice cream which had a nice banana kick. I doubt this ice cream is home made. The complements and construction to the sundae were great, however, and the flavors came together well. As I would hope for a location like this, the staff are local youths who served with patience and passion. In cases throughout the store are several of their other specialties - ice cream cookie sandwiches, dipped frozen bananas, and more - inviting repeat visits. Prices are elevated but not crazy for such a trendy area, although I would say with the middling quality of the ice cream a couple dollars less would be fine. Overall, Manhattan Beach Creamery is a local landmark worth at least a single visit for anyone in the area. If you can get past the generic, if a little boring, ice cream flavor and rampant commodification of the interior, you'll find a classic ice cream parlor with great service and history. I've been to this place many times -- every time I go to Manhattan Beach, I believe. Today, I tried the strawberry flavor. You can see the actual bird of strawberries in the ice cream scoop. And their scoops aren't tiny -- they are the full, overflowing scoop of ice cream. The staff is helpful and friendly. You can try some flavors before you decide what you want to get. Sometimes you just want classic flavors done right, and that's exactly what they offer (no over-the-top combinations, just really good ice cream). The ambience is clean, there was a bit of a line but it moves quickly, and they have lots of flavors to choose from. Some worse than others, mine was relatively okay but it melted enough that it caused the cereal to go soft. Came in here last night and got the butter pecan flavor ice cream. It was delicious but it melted within about 3 minutes. It wasn't even that hot outside. I come here for one thing only, their dipped chocolate banana. 10/10! There is a real scarcity when it comes to chocolate dipped banana availability anywhere. So Manhattan Beach Creamery has been my literal lifeline to them for years. Best part they have dark and milk chocolate options! They also have sprinkles and chopped almonds along with plain dark chocolate and milk chocolate. The chopped almonds and sprinkles do come in milk chocolate only I believe. Its about 10$ now I think. I literally do not mind the price because they are that good and have a generous coating of chocolate. The flavors tasted quite natural and not artificial at all. I also got to try their brownie which was soft and not overly sweet. The portions that they gave for each scoop of ice cream were quite large too! I shared with my mom and we almost couldn't finish it all! The workers here are also really sweet, and I was able to sample many flavors. One of my favorite places and a must stop shop when I'm in Manhattan beach. FROZEN BANANAS. Hands down don't know anywhere that makes better frozen bananas. This menu item alone deserves 5 stars. Every theme park I go to - I always get their frozen bananas... but once I found this location , never again did I purchase a frozen banana anywhere else but there. They have the BEST. First of all- their bananas are frozen (so I do not recommend this to people with sensitive and poor dentures)... second their banana to chocolate ratio is PERfect!! It's like a whole Chuck of chocolate for every bite. And plus there are options other than peanuts. For my peanut allergy friends who can never eat a frozen banana because they always automatically come with peanuts - these can come with almonds or sprinkles or even just plain chocolate.
