Very very old style Mexican place. This is the place that your parents would bring you on a random Saturday evening. The interior is nothing special so don't go for the vibes. The food portion is great but it also matches the price that you pay. I got a pina colada with alcohol and it was delicious. I def felt the alcohol! I also ordered the Milanese. It was very thin and fried. I enjoyed the rice and beans that came with my order. I would also mention that this place doesn't offer chips and dips when you walk in. My coworker ordered a drink as well and the steak with mole something. I don't remember the name of it but her plate was $30 alone.

Dropped in on a random Monday evening. Great service. Live music. Food was served quickly and portions were large. Looking forward to making this a regular visit. Menu photos attached are as of July 2024.

I have been driving past this place for years, I have tried almost every restaurant in the area, I wish I would have gone in sooner! Stopped in with my friend for lunch on a Saturday, the parking lot was filling up so we figured we'd try it out. A steady stream of customers while we were there, a man came in with a guitar and sang in the background. The staff was very friendly and made sure we had everything we wanted. Chips and salsa served when you sit down. The menu has a large variety, the food was delicious, and I absolutely love the handmade tortillas! I had Bistek ala Mexicana and the portions were large. Beans and rice were very tasty, salad was nice with fresh shaved carrots. Salsa had a little kick. My friend ordered a gordita, also handmade, it was so big it barely fit on the plate! The decor is a bit older, but quaint. The place is very clean. Some of the negative reviews seem to be from a few years back- I don't know if it's new owners or just better now, but this is definitely our new go to place!

This place is good but nothing spectacular. The tostadas were ok the tostada was stale and the camaron and pulpo didn't have any flavor. My boyfriend got a burrito not pictured but it was pretty good, he got asada and it was flavorful. The place is a bit outdated and it's a bit pricey in my opinion. Servers and staff were nice and attentive but we went on a Wednesday afternoon.

We were here for dinner and a friend recommended this place. I just realized until we were here that it did not have good reviews. We were seated in approximately 20 minutes. Our server was very friendly and helpful. We ordered tacos, enchiladas con moles and the chilaquiles rojos con cecina. Guacamole as appetizer with tortilla chips. The guacamole and the chip were great, along with the hot/warm salsa they serve with the chips. The chilaquiles were meh! They were soft and wet, not crunchy like I'm used to. Rice and beans average. The enchiladas con mole were also not superb. They were average in taste. They don't have fountain sodas. The place needs some improvements including the restrooms. While we were there, there was a guy who pooped on the urinal . The door of the sanitary was locked, I guess this guy was really in a hurry. I don't want to even describe how the bathroom looked. I told one of the waitresses about this situation and we left certainly not coming back

The last time we came here it was under different ownership, and have to admit I left with saying that I wouldn't come back. However, since then they've changed ownership. Today we were looking for a place close by after a Costco run, so it was something on 18th or here. I remembering hearing that some people said it was better now, so that along with parking swayed us to try it again. Pulling up I have to admit I wasn't sure if they were even open, the lot had a fence around it, for a moment I thought they were getting ready to take the building down (not a bad idea) the fence and the dark entry made it look closed. Much to our surprise we did see some people exiting, so I finished parking and we headed in. Upon entering I began to regret our choice, the glass doors didn't look like they've been cleaned in a while, and the place looked pretty tired, I also noticed a strong fishy smell. I know they have plenty of fish on the menu, but I'd rather read about it instead of smelling it. We sat at a table by some fake plants, primarily leaves and those looked like they had layers of dust on them. Sort of confusing because at the time there seemed to be a lot of cleaning going on. A complete redecorating and deep cleaning could do this place wonders. Especially since the food was enjoyable with ample portions. I ordered the cheese enchiladas with mole, each enchilada was a good size, so much so that I could only eat one. The rice was tastier than average, the beans I'd say average but a good consistency. My husband said his tacos were a little on the salty side, but good. We enjoyed the warm salsa, it had a good amount of spice, however I think heating it makes it soupy instead of the usual chunky style served most places. I can't say that this place would be a destination spot, however, if in the area and looking for Mexican I'd give it another try.

Delicious! Big portions! Needs a little updating but we're not eating the decor lol Recommended 100%

    Cecina taco.

Excellent Authentic Mexican Cuisine! The cecina tacos are the way to go with frijoles and guacamole plus the platters definitely serve more then 7 and their salsa is always warm and fresh straight out their molcajete! I have been visiting this place for years and they are always consistent especially with the homemade tortillas that you can't stop eating. Just do it!

An amazing experience! Highly recommend!…read more We experienced the tiniest goat, which you get to sit in front of the kitchen, all the action. You need reservations, paid a flat rate per person, only include a drink, absolutely worth it. The menu is set by the chef. The waiter is super knowledgeable and friendly. A disclosure is that the chef doesn't make your food in front of you, the show is to see all the kitchen staff in action, you have front row seats to where the magic happens. A unique experience, the food was super delicious with a mix of flavors from around the world. I left with an amazing experience in terms of food and flavors, but my greatest lesson was how hard the kitchen staff works and the passion: the orchestrated action to keep with the orders, the constant heat from the kitchen, the attention to details, and the love for flavor perfection. Plus, one of the best old fashioned I have ever had!

Service was a bit slow. It took 45 mins to get our first dish, which was the halibut. First, just want to comment that the portion size is quite small relative to the price of the dishes. The halibut. This was very delicious. Somehow the blueberry nuoc cham works? The fish was tender and flaky. The sauce was salty and full of umami with a hint of blueberry sweetness. This fish dish made me crave for a bowl of steaming hot bfluffy white rice. The string beans. Unless you are allergic to nuts, this is a must get dish. Perfectly cooked string beans (still crispy but not raw) sautéed with fish sauce vinaigrette was an absolute delight. It's also on the salty side which made me crave rice but it's such a flavor bomb. The cashews provided a contrast in texture but yet complemented the seemingly simple dish. I wish the portions were bigger. The galbi. It's was good but compared to the first 2 dishes, didn't really wow me. The meat was one rib strip (4 rib bones) cut into 4 pieces so it's a rather small portion for the price. The stone fruit slices was a nice pairing in that it provided a sweet and tart contrast to the heavier meat flavor. After trying this dish, I felt I personally prefer the LA galbi marinade flavor and preparation for short ribs. Overall, I'm glad I got to try this place. Would come back for the string beans on a splurge day .

I ordered the item charcuterie and chose coppa, prosciutto, and a French Brie. The meat and cheese were good as expected but that quince spread really took the dish over the top! It was the perfect complement to the fatty meats. Next was the Mushroom dish and while the mushroom purer wasn't a looker, it was a huge umami bomb! Really good pairing with the other mushrooms on the plate. Lastly, I got the milk braised shoulder and it was so tender and flavorful. Good size portion, too! Took leftovers and made a breakfast sandwich the next day and it was still good! I regret not ordering the beef marrow, the table next to me did and I had food envy the whole time but honestly, I had no more room, I was so stuffed! Drinks and service was great, too! Hands down, and I don't say this lightly - Boka is one of my favorite restaurants in the country. I don't think it's too wild to say it may certainly be my FAVORITE restaurant in the US of A. This past week was my second pilgrimage to Boka, and I was stoked as ever. We ordered some non-alcoholic drinks, a few appetizers, and our entrees (duck and black truffle chicken). We had a nice discussion with the waiter and shared our enthusiasm and excitement with him. We shared that this was our return to my safe culinary haven, and I was prepared to be dazzled again. And dazzled I was. The chicken was phenomenal. The flavors were amazing and so poignant, and the tenderness of chicken made you really question if you were eating chicken at all. Everything was so moist and tender, and each bite was a ballet of flavor in your mouth. The duck, although not the star of the show, was hearty and delicious as well. The parsnip puree added an earthiness complexion to each slice of duck. The kicker of the night was when our server brought us our bill at the end. He gifted us complimentary menus of what we ordered that night, paired with a generous "Welcome Back" and the date of our wonderful evening. That small, but mighty, gesture encapsulates Boka in a nutshell. Fine dining, excellent quality of food, topped with service that was personally catered to make our meal enjoyable. It's about the experience, and every aspect of our experience at Boka was met with extraordinary marks. I'm dreaming already of round 3 at Boka. When? I don't know. But I'll be ready to tango again.

We started with the bluefin tuna tart, which was light and refreshing. The topping was delicious, but I think dialing it back just a bit would let more of the tuna shine through. The dry aged beef tartare was one of my favorite dishes of the night. The crispy potato chips added a great crunch, and the cornichons brought just the right amount of acidity to balance everything out. Next came the Hokkaido scallops, and they were cooked perfectly. I also appreciated that the kitchen split all of our appetizers onto separate plates since we were sharing. It's a small detail, but it made the meal feel much more thoughtful. For our entrees, we ordered the black truffle chicken and the glazed beef short rib. I'm not sure how they prepared the chicken, but it was incredibly tender with some of the most flavorful skin I've had. Every bite was juicy and almost melted in your mouth. The short rib was just as impressive, perfectly cooked and full of flavor. I've also done the tasting menu here before, and it was just as memorable. You definitely won't leave hungry. The restaurant has a great atmosphere too. It feels perfect for a date night without being so dim that you can barely see your food.

I had the single cheeseburger and it lived up to the hype. I learned that the single burger is actually a double and the double is actually a triple. I was recommended to add an egg and bacon to the burger and I'm glad I did. Each bite was a glorious burst of flavor. The bacon is epic. Thick juicy slices. The cheeseburger was perfect. I didn't need additional condiments and that never happens for me. The fries were good too and came with a delicious aioli. For beverages, I loved my Arnold Palmer. I also tried a cocktail--the Long Island Iced Coffee. It was pretty strong. I added a shot of bourbon cream to it and that sweetened it up and made it perfect for me. Unfortunately, I didn't have room for dessert. Cute restaurant. Cozy inside. They have an outdoor patio as well. If you don't have a reservation, be prepared to wait. Excellent food. I planned to dine at Au Cheval for Sunday lunch and unfortunately there weren't any reservations available on Resy for lunchtime when I checked. Of note, Resy charges $2.50 per person to book the reservation which does not go towards the bill. After looping around for parking and finding a metered spot, I checked in at the restaurant shortly after 11:30am and was told I was 28th in line and the host could not quote a wait time due to the inclusion of online reservations. I thought that was a bit odd so I ended up walking around to explore the surrounding businesses. I finally received a text that my table was ready around thirty minutes later. The restaurant itself is not big but gives off an old fashioned vibe which I guess correlated with the type of food served. I ordered a single cheeseburger, a side of thick cut peppered bacon, and a side of French fries. I figured it was more economical to order a side of bacon rather than adding it to my burger so I can eat as much or as little as I wanted. The food came around fifteen minutes later. The burger itself did not look as big on the plate as I expected, although it was apparent how thick the two hamburger patties were. Since everyone was raving about the burger I had high expectations which unfortunately were not met. The burger tasted like a burger found at any average diner across the country. The bacon pieces were thick and flavorful but I don't think they elevated the burger as much as I'd like. Also, I wished there were cheese options rather than offering only American cheese which is probably the cheapest cheese that can be added on a burger. The fries reminded me of In-N-Out fries but the fries at the bottom of the cup were way too salty as if all the salt was added to the bottom of the cup instead of trickling down after being sprinkled on the fries on top. Considering all the hype about Au Cheval and the claims that their cheeseburger is one of the best burgers in the country or world, I was very underwhelmed. If this burger were to represent the Chicago food scene on a national level, it should rank lower than several other major cities in the United States.

I wish I had taken more photos, but we were too busy enjoying the food as it arrived at the table! For drinks, my sister loved the Strawberry Rose Paloma, and I enjoyed a glass of Kir-Yianni Sparkling Rosé, which paired beautifully with the meal. The warm, seasoned pita deserves its own recognition. It's soft, pillowy, and absolutely addictive. Honestly, it's hard not to fill up on the pita and spreads before the rest of the meal even arrives. Our server struck the perfect balance between friendly and attentive, without ever feeling intrusive. We usually make room for dessert, but we were completely stuffed this time. In the past, though, I've loved both the Warm Sticky Date Cake and the Frozen Greek Yogurt, and I'd recommend either without hesitation. I was secretly hoping for a tiny scoop of frozen yogurt as a birthday surprise, but my server didn't mention it and I didn't remind him of the celebration (and honestly, we were way too full anyway ). As a huge Top Chef fan, it's always special dining at Chef CJ Jacobson's restaurant. I had the opportunity to meet him during my very first visit to Ema, and he was incredibly gracious. His creativity and attention to flavor are evident in every dish. Ema continues to set the standard for what a great dining experience should be.
