Our first stop in Lisbon and of course, we had to try the famous Portuguese egg tarts. Manteigaria is located in the city, so it's a convenient place to stop by for some egg tarts while you are roaming the city streets. The place is tiny and only has a bar by the front where you can stand while eating the egg tarts. A small line formed when we arrived, but it moved quickly as most people took the egg tarts to-go. The Portuguese egg tarts cost €1, which is really cheap for such a delicious snack! I got two egg tarts to munch on, but could've probably went for three or even four. I thought that the main differences between these and the Chinese egg tarts are that the crust is crunchier and a the filling is caramelized. Day 1 in Lisbon and day 1 of eating Portuguese egg tarts. There was a short line when we arrived, but it went by quickly. It's standing room at a counter and there isn't much space. Between Pastéis de Belém, Confeitaria Nacional and about half a dozen other small bakeries around Barrio Alto and Baixa-Chiado, I feel like I got a pretty good tasting of the local favorite pastry. Manteigaria was my favorite. The custard is set just perfectly and has the perfect flavor. Because the place stays so busy, they're always warm fresh out of the oven, which is just the best part. No other bakery I visited could claim that freshness. The line here was not long at all, and was nonexistent one of the mornings I went (yes, I went multiple times). This is the review for the location in Chiado (the one in Time Out Market was too sweet for me but also I had just landed so maybe that's why my taste buds were off maybe?). But regardless, I went back here time and time again during my stay in Chiado. I liked that the egg tarts were not too sweet, and the pastry stayed crisp even one night after. The prices were also good. They also serve this tea that was sweet and tangy and refreshing after walking around Lisbon all day. Also, the line here is never bad. On this month-long vacation, I've sampled enough Portuguese Egg Tarts to last me a long, long time!!! I can honestly say that Mateigaria clearly outshines every single egg tart spot I visited. The distinguishing factor that sets this place apart from all others is the freshness! They're constantly baking these egg tarts, so you should easily be able to get them while they're still warm. My suggestion is to ONLY get them when they're still warm, when they're evenly flaky with just a slightly warm center. This is worth every bite, calorically speaking!! The pastel de nata here was amazing! This was my first pastel de nata on my trip to Lisbon, and I was hooked immediately. The outer edge of the pastry is perfectly crispy and flaky and reminded of a freshly baked croissant. The inside filling was gooey and sweet. The texture was thicker and more viscous than the Chinese egg tart that I'm used to, and now I'm not sure I can go back to eating the Chinese ones. Hands down, the best Pastel Nata's I have ever eaten. It's a small place, that has the feel of a factory as they make their pastries in house and are freshly baked. They do one thing, and one thing well: Pastel de Nata. A Portuguese favorite, it's a little custard egg tart that you think you've seen everywhere before. But something about Manteigaria's version works better than any other time I've tried before. The tart has a perfectly flaky crust, the custard is sweet with a hint of cinnamon, and it comes together to make a delicious treat. This place is pretty small and only makes the tarts, though you can get some coffee too to go with it. There's also a glass panel for you to stand and eat while you watch them make tart after tart.
