This is the review for the location in Chiado (the one in Time Out Market was too sweet for me but also I had just landed so maybe that's why my taste buds were off maybe?). But regardless, I went back here time and time again during my stay in Chiado. I liked that the egg tarts were not too sweet, and the pastry stayed crisp even one night after. The fight for the claim to best pastel de nata in Lisbon is surely one that is well-fought. There's no shortage of quality bakeries in Lisbon, and I tried many of them. Between Pastéis de Belém, Confeitaria Nacional and about half a dozen other small bakeries around Barrio Alto and Baixa-Chiado, I feel like I got a pretty good tasting of the local favorite pastry. Manteigaria was my favorite. The custard is set just perfectly and has the perfect flavor. Because the place stays so busy, they're always warm fresh out of the oven, which is just the best part. No other bakery I visited could claim that freshness. The line here was not long at all, and was nonexistent one of the mornings I went (yes, I went multiple times). Taking them to go is tempting, but do yourself a favor: eat them at the counter with an espresso. Stand there and take it all in, especially if it's hot. On this month-long vacation, I've sampled enough Portuguese Egg Tarts to last me a long, long time!!! I can honestly say that Mateigaria clearly outshines every single egg tart spot I visited. The distinguishing factor that sets this place apart from all others is the freshness! They're constantly baking these egg tarts, so you should easily be able to get them while they're still warm. My suggestion is to ONLY get them when they're still warm, when they're evenly flaky with just a slightly warm center. This is worth every bite, calorically speaking!! They're super inexpensive, so cost isn't a factor. " Wow, wow and wow", is what I have to say! I'm not a big sweets person. I'll usually pass on dessert. I knew pasteis were good because I'd had them before, but I figured I'd have one or two on this trip to be satisfied. The pastel de nata here was amazing! This was my first pastel de nata on my trip to Lisbon, and I was hooked immediately. The outer edge of the pastry is perfectly crispy and flaky and reminded of a freshly baked croissant. The inside filling was gooey and sweet. The texture was thicker and more viscous than the Chinese egg tart that I'm used to, and now I'm not sure I can go back to eating the Chinese ones. It gives the custard the center stage. The custard is warm, creamy, and with a caramelized top. The flavor is balanced between sweet, milky, and a slight hint if a spice I could not identify. So good! I've had egg tarts in Hong Kong, the U.S., and other Lisboa shops, this for me was the best! Great coffees and great staff. Hands down, the best Pastel Nata's I have ever eaten. It's a small place, that has the feel of a factory as they make their pastries in house and are freshly baked. Ordered four between two people and devoured them instantaneously. Powdered sugar and cinnamon are offered to sprinkle on top. Cinnamon certainly enhances the flavour. We found the custard tarts here to be too sweet. I was eating at least 2 tarts from each place that we visited, but found it difficult to eat more than 1 here because of the sugar levels. Lisbon is known for their Portuguese egg tarts and while on my visit I made sure to sample many egg tarts from quite a bit of places but I'd have to say this one is probably my favorite. First of all it's not an hour long wait in the sun and second it's just perfect! They're like little bites of heaven that is warm and gooey and melts in your mouth. These egg tarts are absolutely amazing! They're warm custard-y center has just the right amount of sweetest and the crust is just a perfect blend of buttery flaky goodness. It was pretty darn hard to only eat one at a time... so I had like three at a time in one sitting.... lol eh at one euro per egg tart it's hard to not buy a million and stuff it down your throat. Open bakery so you can watch your tarts being prepared and the amount of detail and work it takes to make one of these babies. Traditional way is to sprinkle with a bit of cinnamon and or powdered sugar and a coffee, but in my opinion those Lil suckers are perfect just the way they are. Do I need to stress how amazing this place is? If you're in the area, GO! And go more than once because I sure did. When I'm back in this area I will be stopping by here again to get my fix. read more

I'll admit to largely being an NYC Chinatown consumer of pasteis de nata, but this is by far the best egg tart I've ever had. We somehow made room for these after a decadent dinner at Peixaria da Esquina, and they were so good we went back for them in the morning. There's a lot of things contributing to this deliciousness-- a flaky, buttery crust, a soft, creamy interior, the perfect brûlée on the top. Egg and sugar are perfectly balanced. But one overlooked factor is that they're served fresh out of the oven (or maybe we were lucky both times). That warmth gives it that extra oomph to sear a Proust's madeleine-like impression into your mind forever. There was no line at night and not much of one in the early (maybe 8 am) morning. It seems like mid-afternoon does get popular but service is very quick. It's conveniently located in Chiado next to a charming square. Prices are cheap- €1 each. There may be some kind of deal with coffee as our espresso and pasteis breakfasts were a bargain. No need to wait in the lines at Belém for me. Simply a top-notch pastry. read more
