Hot spot to grab a quick mini dessert and cappuccino and stand at the bar to eat. The service was excellent and quick to serve your order.
Warm pastel de nata (Portuguese egg tarts) with a pinch of cinnamon and a cup of cappuccino is the perfect afternoon snack while meandering around Portugal! Not too sweet, and so crispy and fresh! There's several locations throughout Lisbon. The place is usually small, mostly standing room only with counter height tables along the perimeter. Workers all speak English and are friendly. Gonna miss these when I get back to the states.
My first time here... My first time having Pastel de Nata.. Never heard of it until I got to Portugal.. Walked by and the line was super long so i stop by to try it out and it was really good.. Service was great and friendly... Food was fresh and so much flavor plus I added the sugar and cinnamon to it... I'm hooked!! Sooooo good
Outside of Belem, these are the best pasteis. The shop is small with a few staff members but they are efficient. The pasteis is creamy, and has so much filling you're surprised when you take a bite. This is a must try in Lisbon
So one of the several things I had on my to-do list for the trip to Portugal we took in January (my first time in Portugal), was to try absolutely as many places as I could that sold pastel de nata and had been listed in a list as selling what someone considered to be among the best, so I could confirm which ones I *personally* thought were the best. Manteigaria, of course, showed up on a number of lists for both Porto and Lisbon, and with multiple locations in both cities, made it easy for me to check that one off the list - this just happened to be the location I stopped at, but I imagine, given egg tarts are literally the only food item on their menu, that they'd be identical at any location. Verdict: their tarts are *good*, but they aren't the *best*. It definitely felt a bit like the McDonalds of egg tart shops. Great crust, with a filling that was definitely the right consistency (not too floppy or too pudding-like), but was a bit too sweet, not quite eggy enough, and with not quite enough of the flambe'd flavor of the best versions I tried. There was a bit of a line to order, but given the simplicity of their menu, it moved quite quickly; I only had to wait a couple minutes. That said, I could tell, even if it wasn't busy at all, this particular location would feel rather cramped - it's definitely more of a grab-and-go spot. In addition to egg tarts, they do also sell freshly-made lemonade and various coffee drinks, as well as ginja and port, which I assume aren't made in-house. It was rather early in the morning for alcoholic beverages, but I did try their lemonade, which was quite good.
On our portuguese egg tart crawl and this was one of the top contenders. I would say the custard is on the sweeter side and while the crust was still flakey, not as thick. Aesthetics of the place is a cafe you'd love and adore to come into! Lots of locations around Portugal.
Manteigaria is a charming little shop that delivers one of the most satisfying and authentic pastel de nata experiences you will find in Lisbon. What makes it special is watching the pastries being handmade right in front of you, which adds a level of freshness and craftsmanship that you can actually taste. The service was super fast and friendly. The pastel de nata came out perfectly, with that delicate flaky crust and warm custard that just hits differently when you know it was made moments ago. The espresso was equally impressive, rich and smooth, and the two together make for a simple but near perfect combination. If you are in the area, this is an easy and very satisfying stop.
In all honesty, Portugal's signature dessert - Pastel de Nata - is good everywhere you find it. Best, perhaps, when fresh from the oven and here at Manteigaria (the most popular pastry chain in town) you'll know exactly when that is because they strike a big gong when a fresh batch emerges. On an e-bike tour of Lisbon's 7 hills we stopped here, at our guide's direction, pretty much right as the gong sounded. Warm, eggy, sweet, flaky crust... nothing one can't enjoy. We sat outside consuming our bounty (with coffee drink accompaniment). It was a quick stop but only because staying longer would've no doubt meant eating more. So back on that e-bike and up another hill, but fortified now with an authentic and satisfying taste of fresh-from-the-oven Pastel de Nata.
definitely a must try spot in Lisbon! So affordable, delicious, warm, and flaky! you need to pair it with the espresso. there's small counter space to eat it too but otherwise a small store!
The best pastel de nata we had during our time in Lisbon!! They are so warm, fresh, and flaky deliciousness that I have been dreaming about since I left. Always long lines, but they move super quickly!!
Ok wow First thought transcending the game! First time having pastel de nata and I was so pleased. They were fluffy and perfectly sweet. The service was chill and ambiance was cute.
My first pastel de nata In Portugal and by far my favorite one!! There was a line for the place out the door, but it went super quickly. They staff is super quick and efficient with getting people in and out. I just got one to taste and it was absolutely delicious! The crust was flaky and soft with a bit of a crunch to it and the filling was sweet but not overly sweet. It was the perfect bite and I finished it within 3 bites. They do have some outdoor seating tables covered, which is nice. There are plenty of locations throughout Lisbon and I believe Portugal. Check it out you won't regret it!
Best egg tart in Lisbon! Some locations only take card payment (Market) but otherwise good price for the tart. Simple shop and tasty. They offer cinnamon powder but I find that it tastes better without it.

So flaky and creamy - dangerously addicting! FOOD // Made our stop here for some pasteis de nata - was not disappointed! The pasteis were so crisp and the filling was perfectly creamy (and I'm not usually one for custard, but man, this was delicious)! Would definitely recommend trying it on its own, but they offer cinnamon and powered sugar. SERVICE // There is almost always a line, but it moves quick and the wait won't be long. The servers are friendly and speak English! ATMOSPHERE // Since it's in the Time Out Market, there's a ledge near the stall where you can stand or plenty of tables available. PRICE // The price is €1 per pastei de nata and everything on the menu is cheap - very reasonable for the quality you're getting. Well worth the hype - some of the best pasteis I've had in Lisbon! Highly recommend for anyone visiting. read more

iconic! the best in town. not much to say you have to go try it. they have to go boxes and some good coffee aswell. try putting some cinnamon and sugar on top of the pastry also the store in old town makes it infront of you! read more

Lisbon is known for their Portuguese egg tarts and while on my visit I made sure to sample many egg tarts from quite a bit of places but I'd have to say this one is probably my favorite. First of all it's not an hour long wait in the sun and second it's just perfect! They're like little bites of heaven that is warm and gooey and melts in your mouth. These egg tarts are absolutely amazing! They're warm custard-y center has just the right amount of sweetest and the crust is just a perfect blend of buttery flaky goodness. It was pretty darn hard to only eat one at a time... so I had like three at a time in one sitting.... lol eh at one euro per egg tart it's hard to not buy a million and stuff it down your throat. Open bakery so you can watch your tarts being prepared and the amount of detail and work it takes to make one of these babies. Traditional way is to sprinkle with a bit of cinnamon and or powdered sugar and a coffee, but in my opinion those Lil suckers are perfect just the way they are. Do I need to stress how amazing this place is? If you're in the area, GO! And go more than once because I sure did. When I'm back in this area I will be stopping by here again to get my fix. read more
I'll admit to largely being an NYC Chinatown consumer of pasteis de nata, but this is by far the best egg tart I've ever had. We somehow made room for these after a decadent dinner at Peixaria da Esquina, and they were so good we went back for them in the morning. There's a lot of things contributing to this deliciousness-- a flaky, buttery crust, a soft, creamy interior, the perfect brûlée on the top. Egg and sugar are perfectly balanced. But one overlooked factor is that they're served fresh out of the oven (or maybe we were lucky both times). That warmth gives it that extra oomph to sear a Proust's madeleine-like impression into your mind forever. There was no line at night and not much of one in the early (maybe 8 am) morning. It seems like mid-afternoon does get popular but service is very quick. It's conveniently located in Chiado next to a charming square. Prices are cheap- €1 each. There may be some kind of deal with coffee as our espresso and pasteis breakfasts were a bargain. No need to wait in the lines at Belém for me. Simply a top-notch pastry. read more

4 1/2 stars and by nearly all reviewers described as a Lisbon Must (!), the line was excessively long. And while the Pasteis de Nata (little custard tarts) were unquestionably delicious, there were equally delicious ones at other places - at the benefit of zero wait time. This place had become such a tourist magnet that it is simply and virtually not justified anymore to spend that much time waiting. Go anywhere else and enjoy the pasteis AND the rest of the day...!!! read more
All they do is the national pastry of Portugal: pasteis de natas, which are pretty good! (Well, they also do coffee and chai.) Open kitchen, er, bakery, where you can see them made! Staff is friendly and lovely. A great tasty snack at €1 per nata. I could go into about the flavor, texture, etc., but what's the point when they're €1 and the shop is near a major tourist square, where a lot of walking tours start? Bathrooms: None. read more
Manteigaria gives Pastéis de Belém a run for their money. Not that the two bakeries are located near each other by any means, but even if you can't make a trip to the the Belém area, you won't miss much - this spot is THE place to get pastéis de nata. Manteigaria is not only less crowded and a lot less chaotic, it has the added enjoyment of a beautiful open kitchen. There are large glass windows in the back where the pastry chefs are hard at work, and you can watch the entire baking process from start to finish. As for the pastéis de nata: these egg tarts come out hot and fresh. They have a sweet creamy custard filling with a perfectly caramelized top, but never burnt in flavor. On top of that, one bite into the tart and you can experience a crispy, buttery, and flaky pastry shell that absolutely completes this pastry. SO GOOD that I could probably eat six in one sitting. (I, in fact, indulged on three and wanted more, but my boyfriend gently reminded me that we still needed to have lunch...). I would 100% recommend this spot for Portuguese egg tarts, don't miss this bakery if you're in Lisbon! read more

Given all the hype and ratings we had to come here. It is good! For 1.10€ per piece you can a nice crusty egg tart that tastes outside like a solid made buttery croissant from France and inside it's a very liquidy sweet custard that gives it a nice finish. I personally liked it. It is obviously heavy af. 1) Would I wait in line for it - Nope. 2) Was it worth trying - 100% 3) is it different to the asian egg tarts - yes! 4) What's better Pasteis de Belem or Manteigaria? The custard at Manteigaria is more sweet, the outside is more crunchy and crusty as it mostly is served pretty hot. At Pasteis I feel the egg tarts are not really made with love and thrown into a box for you. My girlfriend liked Pasteis more because of the less sweet custard and I liked Manteigaria more because it was hot an crunchy. The truth is: the custard at Pasteis with the hotness and crunchiness is Manteigaria would be the best mix. The line of a Sunday noon was not long. read more
Spectacular pasteis de nata! I had seen Manteigaria come up on several lists when I visited Lisbon a second time and was on the hunt for the best pastel de nata. I'm low key obsessed with them and on my last trip probably sampled one in each bakery I passed by (which in A LOT). Ended up here on my most recent trip and so glad I did. There was a small line outside so I knew I had probably made the right call. It moved quickly and soon the super friendly staff had taken our order, which included 5 boxes of 6 pasteis each (hey! edible souvenirs are a thing and my people want what they want!). They're actually not as burnt at the top as some other places, which I appreciate - although that's traditionally how they should be. read more
Hands down, Manteinaria serves the best and most perfect Portuguese egg custard tart or pastel de nata!!! The crust is so flakey and the egg custard so deliciously rich. You can also see them make them behind a glass partition. You can have pastel de nata almost everywhere throughout Portugal, but those at Manteinaria, in my opinion, still reign the best and at only €1 each. read more
These little pastries are a must try! We tried some from a few different places and this was the best one. We went in the late afternoon in September, and there was no line. Got about 6 of them since that's how many come in the box, and between 2 people, we ate them all! They are egg tarts with a hint of cinnamon. I don't like cinnamon, but it didn't ruin the Pastel de nata for me. Must try if you're in Lisbon. read more
The best place I ever had the pastaes de nata! Had to come here twice! They make it fresh and hottttt! You can even see them make it through their huge glass barrier. The natas taste so good. The space is pretty small, just a long standing space against the counter. You can even buy a box to go and bring on the plane with you! I took 2 boxes back home to NY to share with my family. Just have to reheat in the toaster oven (not microwave please). read more
This rating is simply for the pasteles de nata. FIRE! I tried the dessert for the first time years ago at the famous sit-down pastry shop near Belém. Wasn't impressed. Definitely kept comparing them to my childhood favorite, the Chinese dessert snack daan tat. This visit, I bookmarked Mante because of the great reviews, but was ready to be underwhelmed again, convinced that Portuguese colonizers permanently ruined the stolen recipe with their version. I almost passed on my purchase entirely because I was full from lunch in the Market, and because I had a pastel at breakfast as a freebie with my morning coffee (okay, but mostly meh as you can imagine). Mante MUST be apart of your pasteles de nata forays. It is now my litmus test. It's light, creamy, flaky but not crumbly. It's airy with that crème brûlée crisp. It's worth your 1€. Natch! read more
Manteigaria's pastel de nata is perfection served in pastry form. My first exposure to the Lisbon specialty came from a small cafe on my way into the city from the train station - it was good, I thought, but doesn't live up to the hype. This was obviously because I hadn't visited Manteigaria yet. Wow. I get it now. These are INCREDIBLE. Flaky, buttery crust, with warm gooey custard inside. The flavor isn't overpowering, but the perfect amount of sweetness. Top with cinnamon and you're set. I'm addicted. And at only a euro each, it's a surprisingly affordable addiction for this quality of pastry! Do yourself a favor and visit one of their locations. read more
The pastel de natas were still a little warm when we had them. The filling was not very sweet, I would've appreciated it a little sweeter but I guess they account for people putting cinnamon and powdered sugar on them. The flakey crust was my favorite and had a nice crisp to them. One of my top places for pastel de nata. read more
Worth the hype! This tiny shop servers up pastels with a fresh, crispy exterior and a soft, creamy filling, that's just the right amount of sweetness. Note: it's a very small space, so you'll probably want to grab your pastries to-go. Definitely worth a visit during your time in Lisbon. read more

This is my first time trying portugese egg tarts and they're so similar to the chinese egg tarts. Just like the chinese style, the outer shells had a ton of flaky buttery layers while the custard remained jiggly. The filling is slightly sweeter than what I would normally eat but that's not a problem. I arrived here about an hour and half before closing and I didn't have to wait for the tartlets. I immediately ordered at the counter, ate there and left. They also accept cards as payment so that's a huge plus for anyone who's short on cash. read more
Every street you walk by you'll find a pasteleria that serves pasteis de nata, but Manteigaria has claimed the throne across blogs and people's minds. Having tried a few, Manteigaria is really good and does stand out in it's suppleness and balance of sweetness. I would avoid coming at prime time so avoid the lines that will flood out the door as it isn't necessarily worth the wait, but it is good! read more

No trip to Portugal is complete without trying a pastel de nata...or two or three. This is not where they were invented, you can go there too, but Manteigaria is a chain that does it well. This particular location was really close to my hotel so it was a no-brainer for breakfast. There was a short line but it moved quickly. I ordered two to-go and they come in a nice to-go box. You have the option of pouring some cinnamon or sugar on top of your treats. Fresh and tasty, Manteigaria is one of the best spots around to try this Portuguese classic. read more

THIS is the place to go for pasteis de nata!! If you're visiting, let me explain. Pasteis de Nata are miniature custard tarts they are baked and served warm with cinnamon and/or powdered sugar on top. Trying these should be on top of your to-do list while vising Lisbon. Mantegaria's pasteis de nata are the best I've had in Lisbon. The crust is buttery and extremely flaky and the custard is sweet.... seriously I'm drooling. Mantegaria is small, there is no seating, and there is often a short line (though it goes fast). There is a small bar you can stand at while you enjoy your tarts and espresso that overlooks the kitchen - you can watch them make the pasteis de nata beginning to end! It's quite impressive. I can not recommend this place enough. If you are in town, you must stop by! read more

The egg tarts here are absolutely amazing, the best I've ever had. Pasteis de Belem created the original Portuguese egg tart, but after trying both, I personally prefer them from Manteigaria. The custard is sweet, smooth, and creamy while the crust is crispy and buttery. I highly recommend anyone in the area to try this place! read more

They only sell pastel de nata and coffee drinks, but it is a must do. Very fresh, they are constantly being made all day long. Usually there is a line out the door. Maybe one of the best pasta de nata that I've had in Lisbon. read more
