In all honesty, Portugal's signature dessert - Pastel de Nata - is good everywhere you find it. Best, perhaps, when fresh from the oven and here at Manteigaria (the most popular pastry chain in town) you'll know exactly when that is because they strike a big gong when a fresh batch emerges. On an e-bike tour of Lisbon's 7 hills we stopped here, at our guide's direction, pretty much right as the gong sounded. Warm, eggy, sweet, flaky crust... nothing one can't enjoy. We sat outside consuming our bounty (with coffee drink accompaniment). It was a quick stop but only because staying longer would've no doubt meant eating more. So back on that e-bike and up another hill, but fortified now with an authentic and satisfying taste of fresh-from-the-oven Pastel de Nata.
My first pastel de nata In Portugal and by far my favorite one!! There was a line for the place out the door, but it went super quickly. They staff is super quick and efficient with getting people in and out. I just got one to taste and it was absolutely delicious! The crust was flaky and soft with a bit of a crunch to it and the filling was sweet but not overly sweet. It was the perfect bite and I finished it within 3 bites. They do have some outdoor seating tables covered, which is nice. There are plenty of locations throughout Lisbon and I believe Portugal. Check it out you won't regret it!
Manteigaria was the second tart shop that we went to in Lisbon. We bookmarked all its locations, but we were able to go to the Bairro Alto one only. There was no line that night so we were able to be served immediately. Just like what we did at Pastéis de Belém, we bought a six-pack to-go but tried a couple tarts right off the gate. We loved the flakier crust and the smoother filling. It was also less sweet than the other ones we have tried. We managed to try a few other Portuguese tart places and Manteigaria was our favorite. We hope to make it back here someday.
Okay, so I realize this is the most popular pastry chain in Portugal but it's for good reason. I heard someone say this is their favorite pastel de nata even after visiting Portugal multiple times and at first, I didn't believe her. But after trying a few others around town, this was by far my favorite. The crust is perfectly flakey with layers and layers of thin pastry. The filling is sweet and creamy like a creme brulee. It's even better if you can manage to snag a warm one. It was absolutely delicious and everything I had hoped for from this classic Portuguese pastry. It lives up to the hype! Even if there is a line, it moves fast. The interior is your typical pastry shop. They also have coffee and espresso.
Can get a little hot standing in line... What Pasteis de nata ofcourse! I went in the afternoon so I had to stay away from caffeine but it would've been the perfect pairing for me. This was my first bite of a pasteis in portugal! I thought it was great. I enjoy the outer pastry shell and also the stuffing (?). I also had the lemonade they had, this was more on the sweet side for me. I should've gone with a coffee Environment It is a fairly small location. most people buy takeout. There is a standing bar area inside and this can fit a good amount of people to just eat a couple of eggtarts and leave. Oh, and to watch them getting made, quite impressive. Niceness of the staff In busy places - there isn't much interactions. But despite there being a line, they are all very patient and I was able to get my pasteis! Dollar It was around 1.2Eu for one Yes/No Yes I would buy here again, and would recommend!
One of the top pasteis de nata in Lisbon. It is worth the visit to try the dessert when visiting the city. This place has a seating outside and a quick standup service. The service is quick and they give you a fresh tart right away. They make it in house and always fresh since many people order so the turnover is fast. The custard was very creamy and crust is flaky. Definitely work going back here again for a second Lisbon visit.
Best pastel de natas of my entire trip and maybe my life. Even better than Pastei de Belem in my opinion. This location does it better than the Manteigaria next to Pastei de Belem (unfortunate that there is inconsistency between stores). Staff were friendly and helpful--giving us instructions on how to best enjoy. The standing bar layout is interesting and I really liked the open kitchen concept!!
Great, friendly service and outdoor seating. This was my favorite pastel de nata in Lisbon. The custard wasn't overly sweet, in my opinion and was a perfect consistency. The pastry is flaky but doesn't fall apart, like others I've had in town. They are served warm, too. You can watch the pastry chefs make them inside. The coffee is decent, as well. The few times I've been here, I've had a great experience.

Look no further. If you want Pasteis de Nata, then THIS is the place. It's popular, it's hyped, it's busy....and all for good reason. It's a pretty small place, actually more of a bakery with a bit space to stand at the bar. There is a line, but it's moving fast. The staff here (and there's lots) works endlessly on baking these wonderful Pasteis de Nata. They are so so creamy and still warm. Crispy outside. What a wonderful treat! There's coffee or ginjinha (my choice) to go with. Pasteis cost just 1 Euro (most other bakeries even cost a bit more). Is that fair or what? Hands-down the BEST Pasteis de Nata in town....or in all Portugal? Maybe even so... read more
Easiest 5 stars I've ever given. This place not only makes amazing, authentic Portuguese egg tarts (pasteis de nata), they also have an open kitchen where you can see the entire, beautiful baking process. Egg tarts are 1 Euro each, the crust perfectly crispy and the custard simply delicious. They told me they produce 4000-6000 egg tarts a day. That's quality and efficiency at its finest. Egg tarts are good for 2 days, so take some back with you to share with friends, or just hoard for yourself ;) read more

So incredibly delicious! If you want to try Pastel De Nata, this is the place to be. Don't bother going anywhere else. The first time I tried it was at a different shop and I wasn't so impressed. I thought to give it one more try before I left Portugal so I could understand what all the fuss was about and I'm so glad I went here. read more

I know this spot is a chain, and yeah, the pastel de nada wasn't necessarily warm... But it was so so good. Get the cinnamon on top. I'm sure had it had been warm it would have been ever better, but still a five star treat. read more

The most incredible pasteis de nata! The pastry was crisp and flaky, yet light and buttery. I was very impressed by how thin they were able to get the pastry. The custard filling was perfectly creamy and sweet, but not overtly so, with the perfect amount of char on top. They paired perfectly with an espresso. The interior of the bakery was really cool. There was a glass wall between you and the baking area so you could actually watch the pastry chefs making the dessert, which was super cool. Very reasonably priced for the quality of dessert. If you're traveling in Lisbon, you must stop here! read more

1 EUR per egg tart. I love the concept here - do one thing and do it right. So they only have egg tarts and coffee to go with the egg tarts. I would compare this to creme brulee in terms of flavor, definitely a bit sweeter (and better, if you ask me) than Chinese egg tarts (and I'm Chinese). I had one at the store then took 6 in a box to go, which I flew back to LA and were still delicious two days later (just heat up in the toaster). I must have come at an off time (around 3 pm) because there was no line at all. read more

Decided to cast my vote in the Battle de Pasteis. Manteigaria is right on the Chiado stretch, spitting distance from the metro and luring in any that happen to wander through Praça Luís de Camões. They serve pasteis de natas - no more, no less. And they do it well. Pasteis are the adorable little egg custard tarts that are basically synonymous with Lisbon. The line sometimes spills out on the streets, but service is prompt. There's also coffee, espresso, and hot chocolate if you're looking for something to pair with your pasteis. Don't look for any bistro seats or tables, as there are none. Grab a nice box (or tube) of tarts, and trek about the city, munching on flaky, custardy perfection. Plan on ending the day smattered with cinnamon and powdered sugar. In the great cross-city Belém vs. Manteigaria debate, Manteigaria was my clear winner. (Not that Pasteis de Belém was bad - it was like choosing between an adorable puppy and a slightly more adorable puppy). So why Manteigaria over the OG Belém? 1) The CUSTARD. Holy crap, the custard here is so flavourful and smooth. It's far more nuanced than the filling I got at Belém. 2) Location. Belém is adorable and has tons to offer, but having this right in the centre of Lisbon? Winner. 3) €1 here vs €1.10 at Belém. You may not think that's much of a difference, but when you're vacuuming up pasteis on the order of 10+ a day, that's basically one extra tart worth of savings! read more

Small area, easy to order, just go up by counter make eye contact or flag someone place your order and step out of the way a bit. They have a little counter space in the back and you can see them make the tarts. We opted to take ours as a take away and eat in the square. We ordered 4 pasteis da nata and 3 cappuccinos. They package the pasteis in a box 2 at a time, which was nice so they wouldn't squish. This was our first pasteis and it was delish. Not the typical asian egg tart. It was warm so the middle was soft and creamy, not egg tasting, and sweet. Consistency of like a thick pudding. They gave you powdered sugar and cinnamon to top your pasteis, however we like it more on the plain side no need to add. The cappuccino was good even in a takeaway and we were happy with our first taste of pasteis da nata! read more
We came here every single morning on our trip to Lisbon to get their pasteis de nata. We only tried these at a couple other spots in the city, but if there's a place that made them better than here, I would truly be very surprised. Not only was the food great, but the place itself is very cool -- there's a counter to stand and eat at where you can watch them making the food behind a glass enclosure. Also -- make sure to put cinnamon on your pasteis de nata. I thought this was really weird at first, but it is so, so good. read more

We went to the Manteigaria located in the Time Out Market, but had passed this one as well. It was a fabulous first Pastei de Nata. I found myself comparing all other Pastei de Nata to this one as it was so delicious! read more
So you are looking for good Pasteis de natas (egg tart pastry) and don't want to trek it out to belem? This is your spot. They say the best place is Pasteis de Belem - I think Manteigaria is better, but only marginally so. Each pasteis costs 1 euro. Unlikely there is a line here and the place is open till midnight. What else can you ask for? There's no tables here, go across the street to the plaza and enjoy outdoors. I would recommend ordering 2... but honestly, I could eat a dozen of these things, you were warned! read more

I mean wow. Why not just order 100 of the pasteis de nata? They're SO good. As good as I had dreamed of. They're €1 each and the counter isn't too busy if you get there early enough. We ordered 6 even before tasting them because I knew it would get crowded soon! Crispy but soft outer shell and the cream is almost custard. Nice and sweet but not so much that you can't eat like the Portuguese and add cinnamon and sugar on top! Completely changes the taste but still so tasty. Naked or dressed with cinnamon and sugar, this is such a delicious little heart clogger! read more
THE BEST PASTEIS DE NATA ON EARTH! Well I've only had it here and in Macau but this place does it right? Scared of the line? No worries, the line moves fast. Scared of the calories? MEH, it's worth it. Not dressed well? No problem. The place is super casual and you can just order, take a few bites, and you are ready to take on the world! The tarts were amazing. They are always warm, the crust is flaky and the custard is sweet and has a spice-y hint. The best in Lisbon IMO and I guess others agree with the 5 star average rating. Mark this place down on your list of must-dos when visiting Lisbon. It's close to city center and while you are there, you can explore that area as well since they are a ton of other restaurants nearby. Also, it's across from the meeting place for walking tours! Win win situation right there! read more
The best egg tart I tasted in my short stay in Lisboa (did not get a chance to go to Belem). It was fun to watch them make it from the window too! Perfectly flaky, buttery and creamy, all the essentials of an amazing egg tart! Love how they have cinnamon to powder on yourself too! read more
They definitely have the best Pasteis de Nata in Lisboa! I tried them at quite a number of places, but none even came close. These ones are so fresh (I had some from another bakery as soon as they came out of the oven, but they just didn't cut it) and perfect. The custard is so smooth and creamy and just the perfect amount of sweet. The pastry is also so crisp, you can't stop at just one. I probably bought 2 dozen during my last visit there. They do get soft after about 2 days, but I'd be surprised they'd even remain that long! read more

This is the place to go for your first, and last, taste of Portugal. At least, it was for me. To find somewhere that made these flaky, creamy desserts with heart was important to me. And this place was it. The staff from the cash to the guys behind the glass making the tarts looked like they were having a blast. It's standing room only if you want to eat the tarts right away, and you've got to be quick! There is a continuous line of people behind you wanting your spot. Ate these tarts 3x in a 2-day span (once at the Time Out market location) and took some for the plane home. No regrets! read more
To me, it's *such* a close call between Manteigaria and Pastéis de Belém on who makes the best Portugese egg tart in Lisbon. I do think that the latter wins this one though. If you're unable to make the trip out to the Belém area, Manteigaria is a solid second option. It's much less crowded here anyway. read more
Portuguese "Egg tart" is a must have in Lisboa and this is one of the two top places IMO to enjoy them with the other one being "Pasteis de Belem". The pasteis de nata is a custard in a flaky pastry base. Some folks sprinkle a touch of cinnamon and/or powdered sugar on top but I have mine as is along with a shot of espresso. It is unbelievably good and you will keep wanting more as it simply melts in your mouth. Almost every bakery/cafe/breakfast place will have it on their menu, but what Manteigaria produces is way better and beyond comparison. BTW, they only make these tarts and so they clearly know how to make the best ones. Have it fresh, as soon as it comes out of the oven, you will be in heaven. Don't miss this if you are in Lisbon. read more
Yup, they live up to the hype, completely. Manteigaria's pastel de natas have a different taste from Pastéis de Belém's, but they are just as good, they are also more centrally located within Lisbon, and have friendlier service. Add a dash of cinnamon or powdered sugar, both or neither, have with coffee or without, anyway you enjoy these little bursts of awesomeness will be sure to please. They are without a doubt one of my absolute favorite pastries and I've had none better than here and Pastéis de Belém. Their to-go boxes are great too. I brought a bunch of these back to the states and they survived the trip fully in tact. They are definitely best when had fresh on site, but they are still pretty glorious after hours of travel. Come here, enjoy the depth of flavor of the custard, the wonderful little crunch of the outer pastry and you'll easily have gratitude for the invention of such things as the pastel de nata. read more
One item and one only - pasteis de nata, Lisbon's famous custard tart. Rarely will you find a long queue here. Enjoy while standing at the bar, where you can watch them being made. - or take to-go at the nearby plaza. Worth a stop if you're in the area, and the café meio leite is delicious! read more

ABSOLUTELY AMAZING. I loved the egg tarts so much the first time around that I ended up coming back the day I was leaving to buy more to bring back to NYC. While in Lisbon, I got the opportunity to try out both Manteigaria and Pasteis de Belem. I have to say.. I like Manteigaria muchhhhhh better even though Pasteis de Belem is more famous. The egg tarts here have the perfect consistency and the custard was delicious. It was sweet but not overwhelming. They also give you packets of cinnamon and powdered sugar that you can add on top of the egg tart, but I preferred the egg tart the way it was without the added sugar. I ordered 6 the first time and was so obsessed that I ordered 14 the second time. The egg tarts survived the 7 hour flight to NYC, and my friends loved them. Even though the egg tarts were 2 days old by the time my friends tried them, they were still delicious especially after you pop them in a toaster over. The egg tarts here are definitely a MUST TRY. read more

I set aside five days to explore Lisbon and do it justice (as best I could). One way I accomplished that was shamelessly eating pasteis de nata twice a day. I've been to both the locations at TimeOut Market and Barrio-Alto, and I prefer the latter. The pastries are served warmer at the Chiado location. It's interesting to see how the Portuguese custard tarts inspired the Hong Kong egg tarts I'm used to eating. The pasteis de nata is composed of custard with a scorched top (resembling the appearance of creme brulee), encompassed by a flaky pastry base. There's a subtle lemon flavour to it which I absolutely love. I like to sprinkle a touch of cinnamon on mine and enjoy it with an espresso. A pasteis de nata will set you back 1€ and an espresso €0.70. Reasonable and absolutely delicious. read more
This little cafe is known for their egg tarts, which are called pasteís de nata. This is all they make and with this being their main focus, they have essentially perfected them. They are flaky, creamy, warm, and everything else you want a pastel de nata to be. Walk in and the friendly employees will quickly serve you your tarts. They also have a coffee machine, so I'd highly recommend grabbing an espresso, especially if you need a pick me up after walking up hills all day. I want to note that they speak English here, so you'll have no issues ordering. Enjoy your visit! read more
