While in Lisbon, I got the opportunity to try out both Manteigaria and Pasteis de Belem. I have to say.. I like Manteigaria muchhhhhh better even though Pasteis de Belem is more famous. The egg tarts here have the perfect consistency and the custard was delicious. It was sweet but not overwhelming. They also give you packets of cinnamon and powdered sugar that you can add on top of the egg tart, but I preferred the egg tart the way it was without the added sugar. I ordered 6 the first time and was so obsessed that I ordered 14 the second time. The egg tarts survived the 7 hour flight to NYC, and my friends loved them. Even though the egg tarts were 2 days old by the time my friends tried them, they were still delicious especially after you pop them in a toaster over. They are flaky, creamy, warm, and everything else you want a pastel de nata to be. Walk in and the friendly employees will quickly serve you your tarts. They also have a coffee machine, so I'd highly recommend grabbing an espresso, especially if you need a pick me up after walking up hills all day. I set aside five days to explore Lisbon and do it justice (as best I could). One way I accomplished that was shamelessly eating pasteis de nata twice a day. I've been to both the locations at TimeOut Market and Barrio-Alto, and I prefer the latter. The pastries are served warmer at the Chiado location. It's interesting to see how the Portuguese custard tarts inspired the Hong Kong egg tarts I'm used to eating. The pasteis de nata is composed of custard with a scorched top (resembling the appearance of creme brulee), encompassed by a flaky pastry base. There's a subtle lemon flavour to it which I absolutely love. I like to sprinkle a touch of cinnamon on mine and enjoy it with an espresso. During my stay in Lisbon, I tried natas at five different locations (one of which was the famous Pastéis de Belém) and I have to say, this place was my favorite. The custard was delectably sweet and gooey, the crust enjoyably crispy and warm. Delicious! As a Chinese person who has eaten many dan ta in his lifetime (dan ta is the Asian descendant of the nata), I was comforted by the familiarity and simultaneously delighted by the distinct differences - the nata has a sweeter, creamier innard and bulkier crust compared to it's Asian cousin. As a person who is partial to sweets, I like nata better! That being said, Manteigaria's nata is on the sweeter side - it was imo the sweetest nata I tried in Lisbon. Not a bad thing if you have a sweet tooth, but if your taste buds are longing for a just-as-good but not-as-sweet nata, you may want to make the trek to Pastéis de Belém instead. By far the best pasteis de nates I have found in the world and the best I have had in Lisbon. Served still warm and made thru the day. Okay, so when I had arrived in Lisbon, I tried one of these pastel de nata. It was mentioned in the travel book as a staple (like Chocolate chip cookies or apple pie in the states) of Portuguese food culture. I simply stopped by a bakery near my hotel to try one. It was good, I knew I would have another, no biggie. And its only 1€. I went out that night and was walking around and saw a line out the door to this spot. I realized they were serving these hot and fresh, so of course I thought "oh yeah, I should try these hot too"... Girl. First of all, burned my tongue because I couldn't get it in my mouth fast enough. Second, it was NOTHING like eating it cold, it was a completely different experience. Plus I wasn't paying attention when I purchased one earlier, I could add (and did) cinnamon and powdered sugar. This place is an institution and a pasteis de nata (Portuguese egg tart) pilgrimage site for good reason! The outside crust is perfectly flaky, crisp, and rich, but not oily. The inside filling is lighter than many others, including at Confeitaria Nacional, lightly sweet, but lusciously creamy, yet light, and flambeed on the top so there are patches of deep golden brown or charcoal, then dusted lightly with powdered sugar. It's simply divine. It's no wonder it took hold when the Portuguese went over to Macau and, from there, these little pockets of wonder, moved over to Hong Kong after and has become a dim sum staple. There's an outpost of Monteigaria at the Mercado da Ribeira, so if you are short on time and want to hit a number of Lisbon's famous eateries all at once, you can pick up a pasteis de nata there, as well. read more

I love Portuguese Egg Tarts - have eaten them in Macau, Hong Kong, Vancouver and now, from their country of origin, Portugal! Had a chance to try the tarts from a couple of bakeries here - they're on the sweet side and not as rich as those found outside Portugal. Light, flaky pastry that's not too thick and the custard is smooth and baked just right - not runny. What's also different is the slight cinnamon flavour which makes it stand out. You get them fresh out of the oven and many customers were having one or two straight up with espressos. They have cinnamon and sugar shakers on the counter but they're not necessary. Oh, Manteigaria. I'm dreaming of your pastries as I type this. Manteigaria was my first intro to pasteis de nata, and my last stop before I left town... to bring 12 home! At just €1 a piece, it's easy to gobble up a couple of these alongside a bica (espresso) in one stop. I ordered two on my first visit and somehow made my way back many, many times over the course of my stay in Portugal. They also have a location in Porto. I'm probably the only one who found the theatrics as funny. The guy went outside the bakery and solemnly, but with an exaggerated flourish, hit a stick against the bell. Then, he walked back inside and prepared to serve customers. I understand the ritual takes place to inform people whenever a fresh batch of the egg custard tarts comes out of the oven. But, as I waited expectantly for the hordes to crash the shop for the loot, no such throngs materialized. Only one couple standing outside the shop indecisively debating whether or not to go in, actually decided to do so. But, I kid only. As a firm believer in history, tradition, and heritage, I don't lightly pronounce a contender to be on par with the reigning champion. But, amazingly, I find Manteigaria on par with the acknowledged best-in-class Pasteis de Belem when it comes to the craft and deliciousness of the Pasteis de Nata. I came here on two separate occasions, dragged on each occasion by the nose. Went inside the tiny shop (nearer to the heart of Lisbon than Pasteis De Belem) without seating. Stood at the counter. Ordered the custard tarts and polished off a couple of warm ones within minutes - much like one would enjoy a drink at an espresso bar. I enjoyed the flakiness of the thin and crispy pastry crust, and while the version at Pasteis de Belem may be more crackly, I thought the smooth and creamy custard at Manteigaria was a tad lemony in comparison (while the custard at Pasteis de Belem had thicker consistency). In a word: Delicious! Manteigaria might not be the most famous custard tart in Lisboa, but I can certainly understand the argument that it's the best. I've tried Belem and now these, and truth be told I can't tell them apart. What I can tell you, they all are fairly good. Custard filled mini pies aren't really my go to desert. But when Portugal do as the Portuguese you indulge. I grew up eating Chinese egg tarts. In the last decade or so, some Chinese bakeries in NYC even started selling Portuguese egg tarts, which are more custardy than the Chinese version. So when my travel journey brought me to Portugal, I KNEW I just HAD to eat some pastéis de nata!! On the agenda: Pastéis de Belem (the original) and Manteigaria (based on the reviews alone). I stayed at the Sofitel on Avenida de Liberdade. Manteigaria is walking distance from Sofitel (about a 20 minute walk) so I ended up here twice. WOW. There was a short line when we arrived, but once we were up, a very friendly guy helped us right away. I ordered 8 (2 for each of us) and was given 6 in one box and 2 in a small, totally adorable box. The total? 8€!! Only 1€ each. The pastél de nata is smaller than its Chinese counterpart. But the crust is SO flaky and the filling SO CREAMY. Even though they were sitting on the counter when we ordered, they were still warm! We walked outside and ate them along the side of the store. I was so excited to eat them that I forgot about the cinnamon and powdered sugar. Oops. They were so good without the toppings though. The custard is like... melt-in-your-mouth, I-could-drink-this, life-changing goodness. SERIOUSLY. That night my friend Kim and I literally discussed HOW we were going to take some of these babies home with us. The next night we went to Pastéis de Belem and of the two, I prefer the natas from there, only because the custard was less sweet and tasted more similar to the ones I grew up eating. The ones at Manteigaria are still deserving of 5 stars though. Ended up at Manteigaria on our last night and brought back 5 1/2 dozen!!! Totally worth lugging them in my carry on. If you somehow aren't familiar with Pastéis de Natas, but find yourself in Lisboa make a cultural point to eat this traditional item. Essentially you have a tart of crèm brûlée with a crust of layers of puff pastry baked with pounded butter in between them for a wonderfully buttery, crunchy crust. All the shops closed early for bakery/baked goods in this area. it's the triangle that meets Principe Reale, Barrio Alto and all that. But not this shop. They open later than most other places on this strip. The decor is simple and oh so pretty. It's bright, charming! You can see the bakers baking all them little goodies as you walk in through the glass. I guess they want to protect their custards from getting drooled on :) I don't blame them. And the best part??! You can get 6 of these cuties for 5 euros!! Comes in a pretty box. In my case, boxes. I bought 4 boxes total to bring back home to the states.
