Yummy!!! My favorite place for pastel de nata in Lisbon! And soon to be yours :) Portuguese love their sweets, egg filled custardy sweets to be exact. And the most popular, the most addicted one of them all? Pasteias de Nata aka Pastel de nata aka the egg custard. Now don't get it twisted. You can't compare this so ANY other custards unless you've been to Portugal, or have tried the portugese version. It is flaky, fluffy, crispy, custardy! It is perfect in every way and you will know this as soon as it hit your lips. This place? This place in my opinion make the best one of them all in Lisbon. All the shops closed early for bakery/baked goods in this area. it's the triangle that meets Principe Reale, Barrio Alto and all that. But not this shop. They open later than most other places on this strip. The decor is simple and oh so pretty. It's bright, charming! You can see the bakers baking all them little goodies as you walk in through the glass. I guess they want to protect their custards from getting drooled on :) I don't blame them. And the best part??! You can get 6 of these cuties for 5 euros!! Comes in a pretty box. In my case, boxes. I bought 4 boxes total to bring back home to the states. Somehow only one made it through that treacherous plane right teeheee! Can't blame a girl for chowing these down. You'd be doing the same. Oh and I'm really not into sweets. This was one of our first stops when we were in Lisbon as I was eager to have the delightful Portuguese tarts once again. This little place was moments from our hostel and also our new favorite restaurant down the way so it would seem the most wise that we would come here for pre-dinner dessert and post-dinner dessert (and after breakfast morning tea and mid-afternoon snack with coffee..)! Our hotel receptionist claimed that the pastry here is as good as the one at Pasteis de Belem. Since we would be walking past it anyway we decided to stop by and try it out. I can say that custard here is nowhere near as good. The crust was okay (though still not as good), but the custard to crust ratio was way off. There was probably twice as much filling as needed and the filling was way too sweet and thick. I could barely finish one custard, whereas at the other place I could easily eat half a dozen. read more

I don't usually eat custards but when in Rome....Everyone knows the famous custard place in Belem but I was introduced to this place via We hate tourism tour. At the end, our guide bought all of us on tour a custard from Manteigaria. First off, the building has lots of character, used to be a butter factory. The custard very flaky which i loved, creamy inside, not too "eggy". Goes well with the strong coffee they serve. If you are really hungry, you might need 2 or 3 of them to really fill you up. I have never had an egg tart that was as good as this one, and may never have another as good as this one. You can't come to Lisbon without getting a pastel de nata, and this place knows what they are doing. You can't walk around Lisbon without seeing these egg tarts in every bakery window, but skip all of those and come here instead. When a place only makes one thing, you know it has to be done well, or they would soon be out of business. This place is open early at 8 am and until midnight, so there's no excuse to not come here. Or even better, you can come here multiple times in a day: maybe for breakfast, an afternoon snack, dessert, or all of the above. They seem to continuously churn out egg tarts, and you can see them making the custard, filling the pastry dough with custard, and baking, behind the glass. There's limited space to eat inside, but there is a long counter where you can sprinkle a little bit of cinnamon and powdered sugar (highly recommended to add both!) to your egg tart, and eat your pastries while watching the workers work their magic. The egg tart itself is heavenly - they are fresh and warm, and the crust is flaky and perfect, and the inside is custardy and soft. I tried to eat the one egg tart I had slowly, so that I could savor each bite, and then when I finished I wanted to eat 2 more. I should have ordered 2 of them for myself instead of just one, and didn't have time to get another one since I had to go to the airport. For 1 Euro each, it's worth every penny and every calorie. My only regret is not coming here earlier so that I could have eaten more than one on multiple occasions. I would definitely come back here again and again, and recommend it to everyone who comes to Lisbon. When we left, my boyfriend said, "I wish we had just eaten 10 of these for lunch". Listen, we ate at nearly every nata place we saw. This is hands down the BEST one. Even better than the more famous Pasteis de Belem. Something about Manteigaria's custard, which is a perfect mix, and the flakiness of the crust, and the perfect burn on the top. We ate here about four different times and each nata was consistently perfection. Though I'd recommend you just try several different natas if you're visiting, you absolutely have to make sure you try Manteigaria's at least once. Apparently it is THE place to get a Pastel de nata in Lisbon (unless you want to trek out to the supposedly #1 spot in Belem which I did not). The first time I came here, the line was out the door but it moved quickly. If you encounter a line, it's worth waiting a few minutes for your turn! The tarts are so so so good and affordable that you'll forget you even had to wait. Good custard tarts (pastels de nata), but not the best in Lisbon. I'd put them in 3rd place, behind Fabrica da Nata (my favorite) and Pasteis de Belem. The ones here are firmer and seem more cooked than the other two... shell is more dense and chewy, and the custard is not as sweet as Fabrica and not as egg-flavored as Belem. Worth giving a try for all 3 to see which you like most, but I preferred the lighter, flakier crusts at the other two... Small place, but at least it wasn't crowded when we popped in. read more

AMAZING pasteis de natas for the price. I got 2 egg tarts and one espresso for the price of 2.70 euros and I was very satisfied. The egg tart was flaky on the outside (almost like a croissant) and the middle was SO milky and delicious. Holy smokes. If you've never experienced the national pastry of Portugal (a pasties de nata) then well basically, you haven't lived. In a recent trip where I spent a week in Lisbon, Manteigaria was a staple in which I visited twice a day (morning and night). What are they known for you ask? The pasties de nata is an amazing custard based dessert encased by a flaky butter based pastry shell. It's incredible! They are always slightly warm and you're supposed to dust them with cinnamon and powdered sugar for finishing touches. The result, is a slightly sweet, buttery piece of heaven. There's quite the rivalry for who makes them best but, in my opinion Manteigaria makes the best. They also have delicious espresso that makes for quite a start to the morning.
