Located 5 mins away from city cruise so naturally we came here after the tour. It's a self seat process so just grab whatever seat. We knew what we wanted but service was a bit slow. We tried perogies and they were good but at $15, not super worth it. Onto the mains, I found the Rahm Schnitzel to be very bland. The cream sauce and the spaetzl to be bland. Think of hospital food. It was like that lol. Beef goulash was definitely more flavourful and beef was very tender. Overall it was an okay experience. Personally would suggest other places to try! read more

My better half and I decided to go up to Gananoque Canada for an early dinner and she picked the Maple Leaf Restaurant . For an appetizer we picked the bacon sauerkraut pierogies, awesome. For main courses I had the Rahm Schnitzel with spaetzle and creamy mushroom sauce WOW I would recommend this and was so good!! Food was acceptable BUT it arrived after an hour's wait. Don't know how the kitchen messed up - the restaurant wasn't busy. We asked the waitress twice for updates on what had happened to our order. We pointed to several tables that arrived after we ordered and were or served or had even been served, eaten and left. The first ask got no results. I ordered a "gourmet burger" and my wife ordered a "Jr Schnitzel"... our attempt to keep the price down... still was $40. $20 is a bit much for that burger...and $20 is a bit much for my wife's Jr portion. Based on some of the reviews, we'd expected better, but after our visit, we knew we'd been way too hopeful. Had lunch on October 9, 2021. My wife ordered the fish burger, daughter ordered penne and I ordered the chicken schnitzel. To be honest, they spell it snitzel, so I guess that's on us that we expected legit schnitzel... The fish burger had been frozen which made it taste like a Captain Highliner fish cake. The oenne, not any better. Canned sauce came to mind. And the snitzel...pounded thin and tough, no real taste to it; it was disappointing. My wife wasn't happy that the ketchup looked like it hadn't been replaced in years and she really wasn't happy with how runny it was. Though Canadian favourites do appear on the menu, it is the European dishes where the Maple Leaf truly shines. The schnitzel in particular is as good if not better as you'll find in some of the more staunch European neighbourhoods in Toronto. On days when the goulash is available, pounce at the opportunity. Done as a special, it truly lives up to the title, a dark richness in both texture and taste. The meals can all be complimented with a decent dessert menu if there's room for dessert. Located in center of Gananoque, there is this Hungarian restaurant. Appears to be a family run business. Decor wise its a bit dated. Walking in I wasn't sure if I had to wait to be seated or seat myself (you seat yourself). They have these signs for Czech cechvar beer but they don't have it on tap. Foodwise I was definitely satisfied. Most dishes come with rotated potatoes or spetzle (think pasta size of a teardrop), though I did not eat the spetzle, the potatoes were delicious. Tried the schnitzel, it was large, looked freshly made and it treated delicious. Also got the polish sausage and bratwurst main, and while it looked a bit incomplete, how many ways could you really serve two sausages? Really how can you go wrong with pork cutlet and sausage? And here it definitely tasted delicious! They also have a variety of variations, curry on top, mushroom sauce on top. But stick with the standard unless you know exactly what you're getting. The service was friendly and helpful. They gave a patio between building. Probably not much to look at while there but it's nice to be outside. read more

I ordered the tomato/onion salad for $6.95 and was surprised how small it was. It didn't even amount to a small hothouse tomato from the grocery store. Google search promoted this place as Hungarian cuisine which got me excited as someone growing up on European meals, however their menu is far far from Hungarian except of Paprikash. Plenty of schnitzels to choose from though(German). Although I had doubts I decided to give this place a try. Didn't feel for meat so ordered Caesar salad, poutine and borsch soup for pick up. Portions were so itty bitty for the high price comparable to having dinner in downtown Toronto! Borsch had no taste, I couldn't eat it. I have been going to the Maple Leaf since 2005 whenever we visit Gan!! I always get their Reuben Sandwich and Borsch soup. Delicious!!! Last two visits this year I have been disappointed with the service. Same young waitress both times. Most recently was Thanksgiving Sunday. Not busy at all but was very poorly attended to. Was very thirsty but couldn't get a refill as the server was MIA!
