Was in town for a business trip and was recommended by a friend that went to Queen's to check out Greco's for dinner. We came as a group of 6 on a Thursday evening and thank goodness we had a reservation, because oh my it was busy! Greco' seems to primarily be a Greek restaurant that also serves Italian dishes. FOOD (3.5/5) I ordered a Spanakopita as a starter and the Double Souvlaki Platter as my entree. The spanakopita came cut in half and the puff pastry was really flaky (and messy!). The filling was good but could've had more to better balance the amount of pastry. My colleague ordered the Zucchini starter which is a bowl of battered and deep fried zucchini slices served with tzatziki on the side. It came piping hot and borderline burned our tongues, so be careful taking your first bites! The portion of this is huge and should definitely be shared. The Double Souvlaki Platter has 2 portions (skewers sans the skewer) of souvlaki, Greek salad, rice, potatoes, and tzatziki. Super classic dish and I think it delivered in most aspects. The meat was well cooked, salad was nicely dressed, and rice and potatoes were seasoned with a bit of lemon. DRINKS (4/5) To end the meal I ordered an espresso which came with a mini almond cookie. I was pleasantly surprised that the espresso was nicely extracted, good crema from a dark chocolatey bean. SERVICE (4/5) Our server Norm was very friendly and joked around with us a lot. One of my colleagues had to order and leave early, and they brought their food out very timely. There however were some minor inconveniences such as missing cutlery and a colleague's salad was not dressed at all. They can split cheques and accept Amex. VALUE (4/5) A starter, entree (with leftovers), and espresso came out to be $40 which in my opinion is great value. Of course this is with a Toronto POV, so I'm not entirely sure how this stacks up against the local Kingston area. AMBIENCE (2/5) The front portion has a few booth seats and feels more like a pub with the bar along the side. The backside of the restaurant is a bit more spacious but has the cozy ambience of a mom and pop restaurant. LOCATION (5/5) From my understanding of Downtown Kingston, Grecos is right on THE main street Princess St and has street parking and a few lots around the area. Don't think it gets any better in location in Kingston. OVERALL (3.5/5) The doorway had several award placards over the last few years and combined with the personal recommendation from a friend, I walked in with high expectations. I think the food and service was good, especially for the value, but did not feel like I walked away amazed. Terrible Service! I'm throwing a wedding shower for a family member and Greco's has REFUSED to call me back. I called them 5 days ago and left a message and they never called me back. So I called again three days ago and they told me to call between noon and 4pm the next day. For the past two days, I called them between noon and 4pm and no one answered. I tried multiple times. Also, there wasn't a voicemail anymore for some reason. I just called them again today at 5:30pm and the person I spoke with was downright rude. They told me to call again between noon and 4pm tomorrow. I told them I'd tried that but no one answered. He said "We're busy right now. Call back between noon and 4pm, ok?" Again, I said that I had tried and no one answered. He again said "Call back between noon and 4pm" in a rude and irritated tone. I will not be calling them back. And I'm not the first person I know who has had this kind of experience. A family friend tried to book a reservation for their son's rehearsal dinner and no one would confirm the booking until the day before despite agreeing to do so. This place was a first for both couples involved. When we got there it was a really pleasant experience, there was great ambiance and there were a lot of patrons having dinner. Our server was really funny and well versed in the menu. Seemed like he worked there forever. Greta character and energy. We opted to share a few of their appetizers and I think we did a good job of choosing a few of the classics. We got the Zucchini and Souvlaki Skewer. Both very well made and delicious. For our main Greg had the Mousaka which to be honest was really yummy and well seasoned. I opted to get the Pastitsio because for some reason I thought it would remind me of this dish my mom used to make when I was younger, but it did not live to the expectation, it just didn't taste and feel like what I was expecting. Also the potatoes, salad and rice on the side of each dish felt really over powering and too much, in comparison to what the size of the main dish was. Overall I think this place will leave you satisfied and well fed, but it will also feel like maybe they could've gone a little further. The food lacked a little attention to detail and uniqueness. Maybe even perfecting some of their specials, as well as gone the extra mile for some of their drink and menu options would do it. It's finished off with a hit of lemon, the perfect complement to the salty cheese. The chicken souvlaki Greek salad is also amazing. Huge plate of salad that's dressed perfectly! & Topped with fresh, grilled chicken to dip in tzatziki. Delishhhhhh. If you order their dinner plates, they come with rice, potatoes, and salad too! Grecos is a great family Greek restaurant in the heart of Kingston. Upon walking in, you're immediately greeted with friendly staff that are attentive in serving your table. Food selection is robust with a variety of souvlaki and seafood dishes. Wine is excellently priced and will only run you ~$30 a bottle. I would recommend the Chickebab which was well done served with potatoes and salad. Servings are generous so make sure you're hungry! Hands down, my FAVOURITE Greek restaurant that I've ever been to. FOOD // My go-to here is always the Pork Souvlaki dinner or Chickebab! It comes with lots of deliciously spiced rice, roasted potatoes, chicken, and a heaping side of salad with really good dressing. I love how flavourful everything is and how huge the portions are!!! (P.S. I'm literally craving this and salivating as I type this review) They also pack bread with butter when you order take-out. The quality of the food here and how flavourful everything is on its own (i.e. the potatoes, rice, chicken, and salad) really won me over and I'm still looking for a Greek restaurant to match or top Greco's! SERVICE // The service here is pretty good and the servers are very friendly! I typically order take-out, so I'm not sure about the overall dine-in experience. However, when I order late at night and closer to closing time, they usually give me larger portions! ATMOSPHERE // It's a family-owned restaurant, so it has a homey vibe. (I would rate it 3.8 for it's price, experience, and food quality) Experience: We were seated promptly and the server was quite attentive throughout the evening. We patiently waited about 20mins, much to my disappointment, we weren't offered bread to start because I would have loved to try that as well. Came in on a Sunday night and the service was a bit awkward as we waited to be seated for a long while as there were many empty tables. After being seated there was a mix up in servers and we basically were not assigned a server until after 30mins of waiting/trying to flag someone down, our server appeared and apologized as no one told him he was waiting on us. After that mix up, we ordered the grilled mix plate and the moussaka. Dinner came with free bread and potato/fish roe spread (delicious) and the food was perfectly prepared and tasted great. The moussaka I would give a 7/10 as it lacked flavour but towards the end we were offered a free dessert due to the earlier mix up; which was nice. Most servers, and even the owner seems to know a lot of the customers and seemed very friendly and generous (witnessed owner giving free drink to someone who came in to buy takeout). One word: AMAZING! The moment we (me and my mother) opened the first door, we were greeted by a waiter who was holding the second door open for us. He was extremely nice and friendly and we instantly felt at home. We made a reservation and we were seated at a window seat. The waiter who greeted us offered to take our drink orders. We weren't sure what we wanted, since their menu doesn't have a list of cocktails. I said that I wanted something fruity and my mother ordered something refreshing. We were not disappointed! Afterwards, we asked them what their specialties were and we got a lamb shank and a moussaka. We received some bread accompanied by a potato/caviar spread. It was superb! We got 2 plates filled with piles and piles of food! The lamb shank was so tender and succulent that I just had to finish it all, even thought there was clearly too much food! The moussaka was equally delicious. Each plate also had rice and vegetables. The price was very reasonable. We paid about 60$ and we left the restaurant elated. We all felt a little hungry and ordered lamb shank, souvlaki, penne with bacon and cream sauce and rigatoni with tomato and meat sauce. All dishes were delicious, the lamb shank was highly recommended, it was so tender and almost melting in your mouth. My souvlaki was authentic greek grill dishes, the rice was seasoned well. Other two plates of pasta were very creamy and fresh. The restaurant seemed very popular because most seats had been reserved before dinner time. And it's hard to say whether the waiter is good or not. He was so amazing to know our needs even not replied to me while I called him. He seemed a little impatient and took our dishes, cleaned our plates and gave us bills as soon as possible. It made us felt that he wanted us to quickly finish our dishes and leave..... Ewe.. Its a small restaurant. Their 4 people tables were small but food weren't small :D The decorations in the restaurant were quite nice. It matched their food. The waitress was very friendly. He was quite busy and running around for all tables. The food were amazing and you can look at the photo I posted. I tasted some of my friends' dishes and everything tasted good and cooked to perfection. It won't be so salty or too oily like some places I had in Toronto. Informed our server and stressed the fact that I am Celiac (allergic to gluten) and we went through what was safe to eat on the menu. She assured me what we ordered would be ok to eat. When I found a noodle in my vegetables and brought it to the attention of our server, she merely said "I can bring it to the attention of the chef, but he's really not too sympathetic when it comes to this stuff". No apology, no discount on the meal... if the kitchen can't guarantee no cross contamination, or simply doesn't care, then tell your customers! We went to this place with my family for dinner. It was a group of 9 in total. Given the size of the party, I was able to get an adequate sample of the menu. My Dad is a big fan of terramasalata (sp?) and the rest of us are less so. The waiter failed to mention that a reasonable amount of it comes with the bread. The bread is lovely and its nice to get something for free, but the waiter could have told us so we could have avoided ordereing enough of the stuff for the remainder of the year. The best starter we had was the saganaki, obviously. Otherwise, the fried calamari was greasy and the spinach pie was fine. It came in 4 chunks that I easily cut into 8. The wine list seems pretty inexpensive, which we appreciated. However, it was a little strange how the wine was poured amongst the party at the table. A table of 9 is unnerving, but still... On to the mains. I got the grilled chicken skewer with lettuce, hold the potatoes and hold the rice. This was good. It came with a small bit of tatziki, there were some grilled veggies on the skewer and the best part is they took it off the skewer before they put it on my plate. So nice to avoid the awkward take out the skewer yourself maneuver. Otherwise, stuffed trout was not great, moussaka and pastisia (sp?) arrived less than hot and the lasagna (no, not sure why we ordered that either) was a pile of wide noodles with meat sauce and cheese. Greco's has wonderful Greek food with unusually large portions. Oh, but don't get me wrong, it's a very wonderful surprise when your food arrives. The service was excellent - the waiter both engaging and knowledgeable about the menu. Sadly, I forget the name of what I ate (unprofessional, I know), but it was an alternative meat lasagna type, and it was superb. As a lunch item it came with a salad side, and between that and the company, made for a great lunch. One thing: I found the calamari to be very lacking. I'm not used to ordering a calamari appetizer to split for four and receiving five (very large) pieces of calamari. Having yet to travel to Greece, it is entirely possible this is the traditional way to prepare the dish, but this does not work as an appetizer for many here. Having been to Greece, I'm likely biased in my comparisons because I've always been underwhelmed so I'll take into account impressions from friends. Saganaki.....yum....fried cheese is not hard to make a crowd pleaser. Dinner combos come with large portions, rice, souvlaki and usually a homemade soup are satisfying. The meat can be a bit tough. Service is what separates this place. The waiters love to talk up the menu and this impresses a lot of customers because often they run into "they pay me the minimum" university student at most establishments. Healthy portions, decent prices keep this place busy so call for reservations but it just can't compare to the calamari and tomatoes in Greece I've had. Toronto is also known for top notch Greek food....a few places which I think are better in my experience. read more

The prices are on point, the quality of the food was good - I ordered the pork souvlaki and normally I don't eat pork but a friend had said that was one of her favourite dishes from Greco's. But simply, Greco's was a phenomenal experience, with top-notch food, service and overall experience. For a business dinner, the chef suggested that he bring entrees of his choosing to be shared family style. GREAT choice. The octopus, veal shank and shrimp were particular highlights for me.
