Very low key and authentic Mexican food truck in Kailua. Came across this food truck since my daughter's sewing class is right next to it. Tried the Mexican street tacos - carnitas. Probably the closest to true Mexican street tacos you'll find in Mexico. The tacos were simple but cooked and seasoned well. The salsa had a nice spice and flavor as well. The cilantro and onions went well with the carnitas. Service was fast as well. Looking forward to trying out more items on the menu. read more

Went back just now ordered the lengua street tacos with bean and rice. Delicious. Homemade refried beans and the rice is served with chunks of nicely cooked potatoes and seasoned nicely. The tacos were also very good, and simple, filling was tender, served with plenty of fresh cilantro and diced white onion. I've eaten up the restaurant downtown several times. While we were out in Kailua, I noticed they had a food truck and directions on how to get there. It said they were open until 10 PM. We drove around for a good 30 minutes looking for their food truck and never found it. it was kind of disheartening as we were looking forward to eating a decent Mexican food dinner. I guess I can't really rate the truck, since I didn't technically eat at the truck, but the restaurant is very authentic. I just wish they didn't close at 3 PM. I'm willing to wait to try the truck again, as long as I'm able to find it and it's still open. read more

Our time for pick up was 40 mins on a Saturday night during the holidays. Food: We ordered Carnitas Chili Verde Wet Burrito plate, Shredded Chicken Quesadilla plate, Carne Asada Torta, and Chicken Enchiladas Zuisas plate. Each plate came with rice and beans. They were very generous with cheese, sauce, salsa and sour cream. The Wet Burrito was massive! The Torta was so delicious. All the food was surprisingly amazing, especially since Hawaii lacks the abundance of Mexican food compared to the mainland. I grew up in San Antonio, TX and the west coast. I've heard about this place from so many people. And I finally came to my senses and tried it. Normally people get the common Mexican foods (tacos, chimichangas). But I was interested in the Tosta (Mexican sandwich). The sandwich is filled with beans, tomatoes, cilantro, cheese and a choice of meat. I got the shredded beef. At first when I ordered, I was getting impatient because it was taking longer than I expected. I waited patiently in my car and one of the gentleman that was working came to my car and personally handed me my order. Really nice and excellent service, better than some established businesses. So as far as food, I took a bite of the sandwich and let me tell you all!!! It was sooo bomb! The bread was so soft and the shredded beef was good quality, it legit taste like someone's Abuela made the food. Overall, I would totally go back and try the other stuffs. Maria Bonita is hands down some of the best Mexican food I've had in Hawaii. I've probably driven past hundreds of times and never noticed it until my mom and I went on a mission last night. It's tucked into a tiny lot between Timmy T's and Hardware Hawaii, across from the little strip of shops containing one my favorite coffee places, ChadLou's. We arrived around 6:45, ordered, and ended up waiting until about 7:15. But you can't complain - it's entirely a one man show! Although our stomachs were growling by the time we got home, the food was well worth the wait. We tried their steak and carnitas tacos, beef burrito plate, and steak chimichanga plate. First off, the portions are huge. You get what you pay for here. What was interesting was that there seemed to be some carrots in the Mexican rice and some bits of potato in the filling of my chimichanga. Strange, but tasty nonetheless. The steak wasn't thickly cubed like it normally is, but more like thinly sliced steak strips (the kind you would get in a Philly cheesesteak). The top of my chimichanga was a bit soggy since the lettuce, tomatoes, cheese, and sour cream had been sitting atop it for a while, but surprisingly, the bottom was still crispy. My parents both thoroughly enjoyed their meals as well. I recommend calling in your order ahead of time and asking how long it's going to take before you make your way on down. We got there right before about 8 other people, so I expect that they waited closer to 40 minutes for their food. Definitely find some time to give Maria Bonita a visit if you're in Kailua. My inner fat kid was giddy with excitement when I finally found the Maria Bonita food truck. I heard rumors of its existence, but had only successfully found Betos Tacos and Platos (which is also good in a different way). Then, after a random stop off at the goodwill to donate some clothes, there it was like a sign from above, right outside! Estatic, I ran over and the owner was just re-positioning his truck for better visibility after being parked with no success outside the hardware store. I greedily ordered the chile verde wet burrito with beans and rice ($13), and stood there grinning like a little kid at the delight I was about to experience. This food is GOOD. Wow, I was so impressed with the tenderness of the pulled pork, the massive amounts of cheese, obviously not skimping on the good stuff, and the size of this meal was massive. I would usually say it is enough for two people, but seriously, once you start eating it, you're not going to want to share. I'm so stoked to know that really good Mexican food is here, with a good price, friendly people, and no-fuss service. The truck is not much to look at, and if you're not looking for it, you'll probably miss it which is a dire mistake. Only problem now is that I know how good it is, and it's so tempting! Having grown up in AZ with Mexican food being a significant part of my upbringing, I am always skeptical about Mexican food in other parts of the country. This place is an exception! The food was delicious! We had the Chile Verde Wet Burrito, Chicken Chimi and a Carnitas Quesadilla. All were very good. The highlight for me was the refried beans though, the true test of any Mexican Food, in my opinion. We will be revisiting! Ordered the spicy pork burrito and not one aspect of it was spicy, only the side salsa they gave had any flavor and spice. Owning my own restaurantS and coming from an area with an abundance of places and variety of restaurants is that there are so many different tastes. What most likes and dislikes seem to focus on is personal taste and not what the Chefs ideas are, meaning what We are used to. Think about it, how does a new try become a favorite? Cash only! We've seen this truck parked by the Goodwill but always after we'd already had dinner. Finally today we remembered ahead of time and went there. Holy Toledo, Batman, this food is GOOD. We ordered the Mexican street tacos, 3 of the carnitas and 3 of the carne asada. We also added a side of rice and beans and, for shi*s and giggles, a California burrito. Everything, and I mean EVERYTHING was phenomenal. And super affordable. The carnitas were rich and buttery, the carne asada was beefy and delectable. The beans: hands down the best on the island. Side note for non Latinos: beans are how you can tell an OK place from an OG one. These beans were certified OG. Even the rice was perfection. Most restaurants serve bland, cardboard pebbles and pass it off as Mexican rice. But not this place. It was as good as mi suegra's (mom-in-law's) and had little potato, carrot and pepper chunks like a real Mexican mama would add. So good. The California burrito was bomb. Lots of flavor. I may get it without cheese next time just because it had a good amount and I'm not big on white man's cheddar on my comida Mexicana. I kid, I kid. The gentleman doing the cooking was really cool too. Anyway, if you're on the lookout for loads of flavor: this is the spot on the Windward side. I've been complaining about the lack of decent Mexican food in Hawaii since I moved here 5 years ago. I had almost given up on it until some friends invited us to dinner and picked Maria Bonita's downtown location. We were blown away at the quality eats coming out of this little hole in the wall. We've been talking about it since; wanting to go back but never making it happen due to the little one and china town being anything but convenient. Then one night I was out grabbing some local take out and I drove past the Maria Bonita truck. I immediately parked my car in the middle of the road and climbed over the other cars on the street directly towards the food truck. Yes it's the same dude. And yes, the grub coming out of the food truck might even be better than the restaurant. Apparently he's here every Saturday and has been for the last 20+ years. My wife described it best, "our dinner every saturday night for the rest of our lives." I'm good with that. read more

I have been wanting to try this food truck for a long time now. Every Saturday, I see it parked outside of the Hardware Hawaii lot located at the corner of Oneawa & Kihapai. Maria Bonita also has a restaurant downtown. I wasn't feeling well & stuck at home when I got a call from the hubby asking me what I wanted. I asked for a burrito plate. What came home was a meal that is probably going to stretch me a few days! (See the pictures.) My wet burrito (chicken) is MASSIVE!! I opened the plate & was greeted with a full plate. The rice was delicious! It included potatoes & carrots. I've never had it like that before, but it was good. The burrito! I ate like 1/16 of it & could not take any more. But my mouth wanted more. So much more. The sauce and cheese topping the burrito was excellent. Just enough, but not too much to overpower. The chicken burrito was full of rice, shredded chicken, onions, and I'm not sure what else but damnit, it was GOOD! Hubby lucked out & got the rest of it. But even he couldn't finish it. There is 1/4 of it left. Our children got the chicken quesadilla plate & taquitos. The chicken quesadilla was cheesy & a ton of chicken. I couldn't get to the plate fast enough to take the picture. She had eaten half of it. It came with beans & rice. The taquitos were tasty and topped with sour cream and lettuce. The food truck is cash only, so come prepared. I'm going to work my way thru the menu, purely for research for future Yelp reviews. I guess you know I'll be definitely back for more! read more
