Regrettable dinner for two: $57 A couple beers, some guacamole (pile of onions for $14), a chicken salad--the chicken was actually quite good--and some "perfectly mediocre" carnitas all served with a super surly attitude. We were two of only a handful of people in, but stopped because the place looks really nice. The waiter never said hello, thank you, you're welcome or came to check on us. One of those experiences that makes you feel really bad about spending money at a place. And to top it off it was overpriced. Wish I could have a redo and go elsewhere, we've had some *AMAZING* food in Kapaa, but not at Mariachi's. Our family of 7 stopped at Mariachi's for lunch. The waitress was very friendly and nice. We didn't think the prices were any worse than any other restaurant in Hawaii where everything is overpriced. I ordered a burrito Carnitas and it was the best Carnitas I have had in 20 years when I lived down in LA and went to a little hole in the wall called Burrito Inn. It had a ton of pork in it instead of one watered down with runny beans. Very good. Too bad the flight is so long, I'd go back in a heart beat. The food was okay. We might be extra picky since we are from CA. The service was slow and lacked the Aloha spirit we have come to find on the island. And the margarita definitely wasn't worth the $13. I guess what do you expect when doing Mexican in Hawaii? However, they do have nice seating along the windows in the main street of Kapaa. They literally make you pay for salsa for your meal. The food wasn't BAD necessarily - but they nickel and dime you. Every Mexican restaurant I have encountered has served beans and rice as part of an entree. Here, a tostada is a tostada and burrito is a plain burrito with a dollop of guacamole on the side. The bar tender is shady, I asked for a glass of water, and he thought I wasn't looking when he grabbed a used glass off the bar and put that ice into my glass then filled it with water. Then he gave it to the waiter to bring to me and I was still standing at the bar the whole time. Watching everything! I am now worried about the ceviche I just ate. Is it from yesterday? I came here by chance, cause the restaurant I wanted to go to was closed and we were starving. We ordered the veggie fajitas and nachos. Only giving this two stars cause the nachos surprised me a little bit, It was better than I expected. Overall,the food was below average. Also, the service was horrible. My husband who is Hispanic, loved the mole, just like his grandma used to make. The flour tortillas taste homemade. Rice and beans delicious. I had the ceviche, it was good and the appetizer portion was meal size for me. We had good service for lunch. Everything we had was great with no complaints. We recommend Mariachi's! We were seated quickly, staff was very friendly, & the food was good, not extraordinary. But it was WAY overpriced. I had a $9 margarita that was mostly ice, & husband had the $13 surf-and-turf burrito (had to pay extra to put cheese in & they ended up forgetting to add it, so he had to add it himself after they brought it on the side). They give one free basket of chips/salsa, then you pay for refills. We mentioned to the server that it was my son's birthday, & they brought him a free flan & sang to him. One of the most disappointing meals during our vacation on Kauai. I got the $16 beef chimichanga plate that was mostly a folded up shell with little meat. Earlier that week we ate at Mi Casita which was way better food at a 1/3 of the cost. The only positive was the free drink refills which came promptly. read more

The service was terrible. Asked many times for water and chip refils. Food is about as "Americanized" as possible while still calling it Mexican. Chips were stale. Salsa was basically tomato sauce mixed with chili powder. Mahi Mahi soft tacos were good but overpriced. read more

It's not a bad place, but in comparison to Monico's up the road, this place doesn't own up to it. Lol. I didn't make it in time to get Monico's before they closed at 3, and I really wanted a Mexican fix so my only option to think of was Mariachi's. There are two men who work there, very quiet and didn't make much talk or smile as we came in:( our server Flora was very friendly though. She sufficed for the men's quieter personalities with her friendly one lol. We were served chips and salsa shortly after getting our water. Chips and salsa were good. Nothing amazingly special. I ordered the vegetable burrito and husband ordered a surf and turf burrito. My burrito was loaded with vegetables. Very good. I was a little disappointed that it doesn't come with salsa to complement it and I forgot to ask if salsa was available. Husband said his burrito was okay. Again, nothing special. In comparison, this place reminds me of a fast food joint back home in Oahu called Moe's, except Moe's is a lot cheaper and still makes this kind of food which is fairly okay. This is a great place. Ignore the reviews. It's Baja Mexican food. Very much like San Diego old town restaurants. The happy is good and worth coming early. Their regular food is amazing. We had the seafood soup and a carne asada & shrimp burrito. The burrito was all meat and sea food. No rice filler. The soup was awesome, filled with mahi mahi and shrimp. This place is the real deal. Very friendly staff. Great margaritas and mojitos. This place is a hundred times better than tiki taco and it has a bar. If you're a so cal person you will appreciate it. Seriously the Best Margarita on the island!!! You have to get the large "make me happy" ! I left feelin real happy! They make it with lots of fresh lime juice and double shots taquilas!!
