Our family has been going to this restaurant for 40 years back when it was Esther's. We just got back from a lunch with my grandparents and it was horrible. They ordered Chile Verde Burritos that came with no pork, just beans and cheese. I ordered a side of shredded cheese for my 3 year old that never came. I was supposed to get a refill of iced tea that never came. They had what I'm assuming to be regular customers who were loud and obnoxious. They were talking very vulgar about sexual activity. Normally I wouldn't care but this is a family restaurant and my 3 year old daughter was there. The staff did absolutely nothing to control them. I've been here on three occasions and staff is always friendly. I haven't had the opportunity to taste that many items from their menu so I can't say too much about that. With that said... Their chips are standard but their salsa is consistently bomb. First visit, I only had a michelada. On my second visit, I tried their carnitas burrito & got an unpleasant piece of fat, but aside from that it was ok. The burrito came with no sides. On my most recent visit I tried their chicken fajitas and those were ok as well. Fajitas came on a hot plate served with two small quesadillas, a side of pinto beans, and a side of rice. They also give you the choice of corn or flour tortillas for your entree. The food is mediocre at best; I've certainly had better elsewhere. However, their micheladas (made with Negra Modelo) are on point! If you ever find yourself in the area, I'd strongly recommend stopping in for a michelada. Perfect for those hot days in Downey (or when recuperating from a wicked hangover, ha). read more

It's a real shame that since covid was basically over that Maria's grill decided to get rid of all the specials and raise the prices. The place has outstanding food but the prices on beer and the overcharging on the bills is insane. Watch your bill. They will add drinks to it you didn't have. Two bowls of soup and 5 beers was $140.00. Apparently since everyone's bars opened back up they're trying to make up the difference. If Maria's Grill wants their customers back lower the prices. read more

I have been to this place many times over the years, each time introducing new people who have loved it. I understand many of the comments about the size of the restaraunt being to small, however it has come a long way since I first started eating there. Many improvements amd all while keeping food costs reasonable and good service. The size of the place actually creates a cozy atmosphere. They do have a number of nights with entertainment, such as Karaoke, which I hate, but everyone there seems to enjoy the good time, even me. If you want delicious food at an affordable price with better than adequate service, then this is the place for you. If your a fan of large establishments and lack the capability of enjoying wholesome family own and run food and entertainment then stick to El Toritto where you pay high prices for shit food. First time there, its just such a small place!!! but other than that it wasn't bad at all. I had a michelada with Modelo, it was pretty good. Im not sure if they use a mix or they make it themselves. Generally, when you walk into an establishment and it says "Happy Hour - 3-6pm" wouldn't you think that's when happy hour is? Apparently not at Marias. Apparently it's just "we set our own rules and when we say it's happy hour then it's happy hour." Not what is actually posted on their own walls. My wife and I have been coming here for about three years. Marias Grill staff is friendly and always make you feel welcomed. We really love the ceviche tostada, fish tacos and the Rice and beans. We also enjoy the street tacos, especially the Al Pastor, Tacorona Tuesdays I also recommend and they have a Dj that starts at 9 pm on Tuesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday. This little place is the real deal when it comes to good home-style Mexican food, I've tried just about everything except the menudo. My parents first started coming here when they got married in 1983. By the time I was old enough to eat here they had moved away. Every blue moon they would talk about it and wonder if it was still around. About 15 years ago they finally stopped by to see and it was! This has been a family go to spot ever since. Sidenote: We live in Irvine. We've made trips just for the chicken tacos. And it's not uncommon to decide to stop on the way home form LA.
