The staff are very nice and the seem competent enough but the billing practices are terrible. I've never had to spend so much time trying to o understand a bill from a dentist. So far, I've received 4 invoices from them and not a single one was correct. Finally had yo go in person to the office and was told that their billing software was "glitchy" and that there was really nothing they can do to resolve any future issues. I finally settled the bill for procedures done in December 2024 at the office. Was assured that my account was paid in FULL only to get an another bill a month later with no details as to what I am being charged for. Unbelievable! read more

Folks are nice enough but billing practices are terrible. 1- Quoted me for retainers for my kids that I paid, at the time of service, then sent me additional bills. 2- Charged me for teeth cleanings that is covered and was billed to my insurance - when asked they said that the cleaning was done by someone who charges more?!? 3- I was given the run around and different explainations + told to call an other number for billing questions. Hello, I have never, in my 56 years, written a thank you note to my dentist! I am compelled to do so after the exceptional care I received on Monday. The front reception is always welcoming and efficient. Thank you. I am not generally an anxious person, but for some reason I did have some anxiety about getting my crown put on. Dr. Joshi and his assistant (I'm sorry I cannot recall her name) were incredible. The degree of care and detail they put into building the crown and then putting it on and adjusting it was incredible. Not only that, as I was experiencing some jaw discomfort, they adapted their practice to give me plenty of time to rest and adjust during the procedure Finally, and most importantly, I can barely tell the crown is there! It feels like a natural part of my mouth and has caused me absolutely no discomfort whatsoever. I can't say I look forward to getting my next crown :), but I can say I know I am in excellent hands. I don't recommend this place if you're going to have major work done. I had my crown replaced in October and all the work was done by assistants, not the dentist. The dentist came to check before and after the crown was cemented, that's it. I get a call a few days later informing me that a shadow was noticed when the dentist finally reviewed my x rays, that I might need to get it replaced. I went back in and this time the dentist did all the work, caused less pain and did it correctly. read more

I wish I could give a better review because the people were mostly very nice and I didn't mind going here. But here's what happened. Last year Dr Kotula told me I needed to have a filling replaced because it was decaying and in danger of cracking. I kind of felt like they were just drumming up more work so I said let's wait. So we waited, six months goes by and I go in for another checkup. Yes, they tell me, that tooth still needs a new crown, but another tooth is starting to decay and even more concerning. They gave me a quote for over $3000 to put crowns on these two teeth of concern. I figured I would wait since I'm moving. After I moved and went to a new dentist, they didn't see any problems. I pointed out what I had been told and showed them which teeth had been recommended for new crowns. They told me that work was totally unnecessary and these teeth are fine as is. So looking back, I would have spent $2500 out of pocket after insurance to sit in a chair and get my teeth replaced with crowns, that I didn't really need. I felt compelled to post this review as a warning to others. Get a 2nd opinion before spending a small fortune making permanent changes to your teeth. read more

I HATE the dentist! Not like a normal amount of hate...like an irrational type of hate and fear! I walked into their office in so much pain from a cracked tooth. Turns out it was 3 infected teeth and the abscess was BAD. I know my teeth are not the best, but I can't stand going to the dentist and being lectured about them...it's half the reason I almost never go! Marin Dental Care made me feel so comfortable and never made me feel worse about my teeth. They offer a variety of things to help you feel comfortable during your visit from blankets to head phones. The front desk is so nice and willing to help in any way they can. They all made me feel very comfortable. So comfortable that I've decided to do Invisalign with them and go in on Tuesday for my fitting! I can't wait!!! read more

Yiiiiiiikes. Avoid avoid avoid. We moved to San Rafael from the city about 4 years ago. I was hoping to find a closer dentist so I came here a few weeks ago for an initial visit. Initial impressions - the assistant who took my x rays and the hygienist who cleaned my teeth were amazing. But then the " new associate" dentist came in. After the assistant and the hygienist had both praised my teeth and the care I provided for them; in comes the " new associate". She told me how pretty my teeth were and what a great job I am doing taking care of them. THEN IT STARTS TO GET AWKWARD, she tells me that based on the radiographs taken at the beginning of the visit; I am going to need 3 new crowns and a filling to the tune of $4200 (first YIKES, I have incredible insurance). The doctor proceeded to tell me that "it's not so bad". I was immediately confused because I had seen my primary dentist (of 9 years) 6 months before and she hasn't mentioned any of these "issues". I decided to get a second opinion and went back to my doctor in the city. My previous doctor reviewed the radiographs taken by this place and did her own exam; she determined that I did not need any of the work suggested by the "new associate dentist". She mentioned that in two of the radiographs, she identified the "issue" noted by the new associated but in other views of the teeth; the "issue" wasn't visible, she noted that this is often a mistake of new dentists who only look at one view of the tooth. Wtf I was really looking forward to finding a reputable dentist close to my house but y'all this ain't it. If you're into having unnecessary dental work done then this is the place for you. read more

Went in for fillings after some tooth trauma; left with a good clean and a referral to get my wisdom teeth out, but nothing done about my cavities. There was a solid wait time the day I went in for my appointment, which may be why Dr. Chase didn't even note my filling-needs in his files, as I found out later when I called to determine whether or not cavity-filling was a service offered here. I felt pressured to complete expensive care that no other dentist recommended to me in the past. Its funny because the dentist went in the other room and I heard the same spiel being told to the next patient and the same expensive treatment being recommended. Then the dentist will try and say something like "I really want to get this done asap, let's schedule for later this week". I have never experienced these tactics from any other dentist before. I received an annual dental cleaning in February 2022 - the service was subpar and I determined I would not go back. At the time, I paid my co-pay and my insurance covered the rest. Two years later, I receive a bill lacking any details beyond stating that I owe almost $300 from that service. The bill did not note services rendered, billing codes, or what my co-pay / insurance covered outside of remaining balance. I left two voicemails, sent emails, and even texted with someone who said they could not provide that level of detail (why not?? how could they not know which dentist saw me or what services and billing codes were completed?). In order to verify the claim with my insurance, I need that level of detail to submit a claim. After approximately 5 months of requesting that information, I have received nothing but bills with no details. Under HIPAA, all healthcare providers, including dentists, are required to send any and all medical records that a patient requests, including billing information. Today, I was informed by Jennifer that my bill is going to collections. I again reiterated my request and that I would be happy to pay once I have the details I requested. Overall, this experience and their unlawful billing practices are shameful. read more

I went to them in August 2021. I needed 2 crowns and a filling. They were very thorough and did a great job with my tiny mouth, which definitely was a challenge for them. The 2 crowns were made in a jiffy and off I went. They were gentle -- Rosa, the dental assistant and the doctor were really good. I'm glad I went to them to get a 2nd opinion. I am sad to write this review because I used to love Dr. Kotula. She is a skilled and kind dentist, but over the last few years she, and her business, has changed for the worse. My last visit she had her assistant finish a crown (without checking her work) that was done poorly. Now, I'll have to have it replaced. And, their BILLING PRACTICES ARE TERRIBLE. After agreeing to the cost for that crown up front and paying my portion of the bill, they sent it off to my insurance. Then, I received a bill for the treatment 1.5 years later!!!! There were no details on the bill or explanations - just a charge of $3500. When I called them, they said that the insurance didn't pay for the crown AND the insurance told them to charge me an extra $2500. So, A YEAR AFTER THE TREATMENT they added an extra charge of $2500 to my bill. They finally removed the extra charge, but still have not sent me a detailed bill or apologized. Their business practices are horrible and, I'm sorry to say, they are all about making money. read more

I'm ashamed to say that my last dentist visit was in February 2016. Between moving across the country 3 years ago and not having dental insurance until June 2019, I couldn't afford a dentist visit. With that being said, my first time back in the dentist chair on Saturday, August 24th was a pleasant one! The staff was beyond kind, the Registered Dental Hygienist (RDH) and the Registered Dental Assistant (RDA) I had were amazing, and Doctor Chase wrapped it in a bow for me. Special shoutout to Ana, the RDH and the kind woman at the front desk who worked with me when they found out my Insurance had me on a 1 year waiting period for a service many dentists would consider minor service. read more

Stunned to read Art L's review...namely because Marin Dental has a totally modern X-ray set up, NOT FILM. Perhaps Art was reviewing another dentist and mistakenly picked this dentist rather than the one he experienced. There is another similar named clinic for the poor, but it is not this one. I was studded as I toured the facilities for two dentists and two hygienists along with the equipment to make porcelain crowns on-site at one sitting/appointment, Stunningly beautiful decor, front desk and over all facility. First class all the way. No one who has been here could make comments that i see in these reviews. Hopefully clarification of addresses will eliminate future confusion of raters. read more

I went in for the deal to get my teeth cleaned, an exam and X-rays. The X-ray machine was broken. During the exam, I asked Dr. Kotula for a second opinion about a bridge, crown and a filling I received from Dr. Pouradib, another dentist in San Rafael. She seemed to agree with me, that my concerns were valid and offered to contact Dr. Pouradib to help me explain what bothered me. I went back to Dr Pouradib, who was unable to fix the problems. I still have 3 different colors of teeth. I still have an uneven bite and the surface of my filling is still chalky rather than smooth like glass. Dr. Pouradib told me he can't do any better than what he's done, so we agreed I needed to go elsewhere. I asked Dr. Kotula if she'd take my case, but she refused. I can only speculate that she doesn't want to be involved with a potential court case, or she's concerned about professionalism or she can't do better. Or maybe she thinks it's ok for me to be uncomfortable and have unnatural looking, uneven, mediocre work in my mouth. Whatever, someday I hope to find a dentist who can produce a consistent, high quality outcome. Once I get my X-rays, I'll add more stars, but for now I haven't gotten what I paid for. read more

I transferred because they are part of the Blue Shield PPO. I loved my past dental practice..Blue Apple in Rohnert Park. However, I have to say, this was a really pleasant experience. You could tell they were having a good time working, but always professional. It put a smile on my face. The dentist, Dr. G., was young, but have never had a more comprehensive exam. They get 3 stars for getting me in easily and quickly for X-rays, cleaning and check up. It is so hard to get a dentist appointment in under 2 months, I was willing to drive to San Rafael from Oakland to see Dr Kahn on a friend's recommendation. But, honestly, is there a dentist anywhere who doesn't cancel appointments on a whim? I travel for a living, so finding dates and times for appointments is extremely difficult and not easily changed, a point I made to them on my first visit. Even more challenging, Dr. Kahn was only available on Mondays and Fridays - days I typically don't have available. So of course they called to cancel. Bleh. read more

signed up for a periodontal cleaning but received a more than superficial cleaning . the hygienist  did  not floss under my bridge or implants. She mostly scraped my teeth instead of using ultrasound . the irony is that she later explained  to me how damaging the scraping is for teeth and that was 90 % of her doing .  my gum pockets were not looked at or measured . instead she told me that I don't have  the gum disease which destroys bone  which is not in accordance with what my periodontist told me . on top of all this i was told that my implants might fall out soon and that i needed a crown very soon. i went for a second opinion somewhere else and was informed that i dont need a crown. that tells me how fraudulent these people are read more

I would avoid this place - I scheduled an appointment with them for a cleaning only to be billed months later and being told that my insurance was out of network. Before scheduling the appointment I had a conversation with scheduling desk and made it clear that I wanted to be seen by their dentist who was in network but they went ahead and scheduled me with a dentist who was out of my insurance coverage and then blamed me as if I controlled their scheduling.
