So I was happy to be able to goto the store again. This location sells items not available in other retail environments. So, the shelves were bare for the item I was looking for and went to the front to ask if someone would check the back stock. Instant response was we're out in a almost 'how dare you ask' manner. Little chaotic. Great seafood choice. They cut and clean the fish for you. You get to pick ( which I didn't want to do) and give it to them for cleaning. Huge vegetable selection. Not very well lit. If you know what you want like I did then it's a good place. If you want to walk around and look for new stuff, that's great as well but I personally get overwhelmed with too many choices and sometimes you find stuff, other times you don't. Our wild India pompano was fried to perfection, service not quick but the line was moving so no big deal. The store is cozy and has more of a welcoming feel than the austere feel of the bigger store chains. Lines weren't long since it was close to closing and cashiers were friendly. We went here for their fried fish service which was convenient and came at no additional cost. As a pescatarian, I am a regular here particularly for this service so if you want to double getting a prepared seafood meal along with getting your groceries, this is just the spot for that! read more

At $12.99 per pound, they were more expensive than any I've seen at other markets, but I didn't want to waste time driving to other markets to save a couple of dollars. I asked the guy at the counter, who spoke clear english, for 3 crabs with claws and legs intact. He went behind the tank an emerged a few moments later with a paper bag, tightly rolled, then put in a plastic bag and double-tied. Looking back, I should have been suspicious, and ripped the bag open. When I got to Lodi and opened the bag I found out he had given me crabs with missing legs and/or claws. None of the 3 were whole. Lousy lousy service I paid for my grocery and the cashier Mariana ignored everything piled up behind her and started working on the next customer. The next cashier Joanna came up to put things in bag after I asked if there was any packing service. Joanna began to throw my grocery into my bag with the most delicate vegetables on the bottom. Then she started throwing the heavy stuff on top. I was flabbergasted and took the vegetables out of the bottom. She got annoyed at me because I interrupted her packing. I said you shouldn't put the heavy things on top of the delicate vegetables. She just walked away. I asked her who her manager was. She said " I don't know". I asked the another cashier to call the manager. She did nothing. Just told me to wait. I asked if she could call the manager. She just ignored me and said WAIT. I waited and nothing happened. It's a janky market in San Mateo, but Asian markets are limited in the area so Marina is like a godsend. Their operating hours aren't as long as Ranch 99 in Foster City, but if you're nearby then it can be a quick stop to get what you need. I'm not sure how prices rank compared to other markets (sorry mom), but if you're like me and went on this mission solely for ube jam then trust me and come straight here for it. Ranch 99 has not restocked in a few days - not sure when they ever will. Marina's located in a plaza so parking is abundant. TL;DR version: BEWARE - The scales at the cash registers are inaccurate so they drastically overcharge you on weighed produce! Long version: I shop here occasionally, and went today to get some Asian produce and other goods. I wanted some pea shoots / pea leaf tips, which are one of the more expensive produce items at $7.99/lb. They come pre-packaged in plastic containers and I didn't need a lot, so I weighed a few to pick the lightest container, which was a little under .75 lb according to the old-school hanging scales in the produce section. When I checked out, I noticed the cash register weighed the same container at 1.41 lb, charging me $11.27 for a container of some greens. I have purchased this item from Marina several times before, and have always paid somewhere around $5-8 for a container. I told the lady that the weight was wrong, and I weighed it at around .75 lb at the scales in the produce section, and she said those hanging scales were inaccurate. She weighed my container on her scale again to show me it weighed 1.41 lb. I was annoyed, but carried on and went home. I weighed the same container on my home kitchen scale and it weighs 0.70 pounds! So they basically DOUBLE CHARGED me using a FRAUDULENTLY inaccurate scale at checkout! I called and explained the situation and the guy didn't sound surprised by my story, and told me to come back with the item and my receipt and he would refund me. But I didn't have time to do that (I bought this item to cook for dinner tonight), and not sure it was worth the drive/time/hassle/potential Covid exposure to get $5.65 back. Behind me in line, an elderly man in a wheelchair asked the checker for a basket for his groceries. She said she didn't know where any were. There was a stack of baskets 10' from her. Bought a chicken. After i got home i found out it smelt really bad. I checked the label and the expiration is a week ago. I took it to the reception and asked for return. The lady asked me if i have receipt. I said no. They asked why you want to return. I said this is expired a week ago. They said you can not return. They upgraded or changed a few of their cash registers but that's just part of remodeling. The floor is cracked in several places. There's even a mat but it is not propperly placed so there are little spaces. It's like rinkled clothes. UNACCEPTABLE!! Leeks, spring onions, and Chinese Leeks are found, but the Chinese leeks are EXTREMELY rare. Leeks were fresher, making the experience the slightest bit better. I also noticed at the entrance, there used to be a mat, but that's gone. If this store could receive some modernization, I'd be back. The service was good. The cashier last time said "One more honey, one more honey" as I bagged my groceries which made me feel pretty good. read more

I love coming to Marina food. I know it's dated, even after their remodeling, and service can be a bit well... non existent, but sometimes, you have to take things with a "grain of salt" if you will. One of the guys who works at their deli have been "chop-chopping" roast duck here forever. It's nice to see a familiar face. The Asians looks at me really weird because I give him a tip afterwards. Heck, if they only knew that I've been coming here for awhile, and the service this nice gentleman provides me, maybe they will too! What I also enjoy coming here for is listening to the Taiwanese ladies speak Mandarin. The Mandarin language is music to my ears. I don't understand it, but it sounds fantastic. Though, if I take my "Putonghua" classes again, I might be able to pick up a few and converse! Their veggies here are not bad. I think 99 Ranch has larger selections. I also don't buy their fruits here as it can be a hit or miss, usually a miss! LOL Their fish here though is not bad. Always buy the ones swimming in the tank if you can. They just taste so much better, especially if you are planning on steaming it. But if you have to buy fish that are laying on ice, their catfish or tilapia is usually "priced" right. Don't forget to tell them to clean it and cut it for you. Makes less mess in your kitchen. Lastly, if there is one thing that I come here for, it's usually for my "Mochi!" They always have them on sale usually around $2.99 each. Get the mango one if you can. It is delicious. Parking here can be a challenge as Marina shares their lot with neighboring businesses. Marina Food is like Ranch Market's slightly less attractive little sister.. It's a little bit smaller and once you get past the smell you'll find they stock a decent variety of items including a large selection of fresh veggies, almost every kind of sauce you can think of and even regular loafs of bread in the Bakery section. The chocolate & sweet selection here is pretty impressive too - row upon row of them! Including some of my favorites from my homeland (England) which is nice. I come here for the curry pastes though. I love to make my own at home so it's really convenient to pick up everything I need. This is also the only store I have found so far that stocks packets of the small Mochi balls so I don't have to raid Yogurtland or Nubi to put them on my dessert at home. +1 star for that! I had a very positive experience this afternoon and will absolutely be back. I was having trouble finding the product I was looking for so I asked a man doing stock work. He wasn't familiar with the product himself but immediately led me to the person he believed would; a woman I assume was Chinese working one of the registers. When she finished with her customer, she then left her register and walked me down the aisle where she found the specific item I needed. Sure enough, their sake section spanned the entire length of a supermarket aisle in two shelves. In general, their sake prices were cheapest in the Bay Area, but depending on the bottle, some were cheaper at Nijiya. Along their seafood department, there is another rack with a large selection of Sho-chu. Better than True Sake? Need to set expectations before coming here. It's an Asian market. You won't get red carpet service. The cashiers usually won't friendly smile at you but not hostile unless you act a fool. The butcher and seafood area smells like old fish. The shopping carts are noisy and sticky from who knows what. The parking is tight and you will probably get a door ding if you choose a prime parking spot Once you get use to these idiosyncrasies, the store offers a great variety of specialty items not available at your chain grocer. Calbee chips, Sun ramen, Fruitip blackcurrant gummy candy, Pretz, Nori Komi furikaki, Nice Brand long rice are some of my favorite items that I get here. The produce is also worth mentioning. There are a great selection of fruits and vegetables for great prices. And they have Hawaiian papayas that are expensive but the best I have found anywhere. I avoid the meats here if possible since I have seen some sketchy leaky packaging. The fresh deli items are also questionable, depending on what it is. Marina is a local Asian grocery store. I've been to a few around the Bay Area. The aisles are pretty narrow. I don't even know why they bother providing carts in this location because it's actually quite difficult to maneuver around with carts. Try not to block the aisles. The selection of Asian goods is ok, although there were a few items that my sister wanted (green tea soymilk) that we couldn't find in this grocery store. There is ample parking in the lot, at least at night there is (not sure about during the day). read more
