As a spouse this base is amazing! We've been to many over the years moving and visiting friends and to even meetings for work. My first time here at this one and I enjoyed it! As part of my sedimentology and stratigraphy course at the University of Hawai'i at Mānoa, Spring 2014 semester, we went onsite to the Marine Corps Base in Kaneohe. The instructor(s) of the course set up this stop on our field trip through the base. As part of our visit we were assigned active military personnel as guides while on military grounds. Our visit was part of a section of the course where we were studying how sea level rise and subsequent fall in the Hawaiian Islands were preserved in different rock deposits and fossils in and around the greater Honolulu area. Some of the rock deposits where the base was located along the water had been previously studied and were an excellent site for observing/field documenting certain geologic process(es). While on military grounds, our lead guide personnel was clear on what we were and were not allowed to do. One of the rules was single file through the taller grass, to minimize the risk of detonating unexploded ordinances. All of us geology students made it through our visit without injury or other harm. I was in the parking lot picking up some friends and I heard the MP talking to a group from Canada stating that they're from the foreign countries so their information has to be collected, photographs and fingerprinted. The MP started wiring down information and he used some kind of phone to take pictures of those people. I asked one of the younger kids, and he said that the MP told him that foreign National are not allowed there unless they are in the military or a U.S. Citizen. I think that's pretty extreme. But not sure what it was for, so beware if you are not military, then stay away. It's not open to the public. There is a sign that says non military turn here or something like that, was some kind of digital signs. Maybe that's what that warning was for. read more

SO this is really for the C-20 that is based at MCBH aka 'The Grey Ghost" In military parlance, the C-20G is a militarized version of the Gulfstream G-IV. What makes this C-20G #165153 special is the wicked grey livery and the fact that it was nearly destroyed by a tornado. The plane was meticulously restored and continues to serve. It can be seen mostly hoping between Hawaii and the West Coast, but a search of the pictures database shows it to a bit of a world traveler. read more

We went to the Marine Corp Base for dinner at the Mongolian BBQ. You must be military or with someone in the military. The selection of meat and vegetables is still very good, chicken, pork, beef, tofu, shrimp, eggs. If you want to stir fry in some noodles those are there also. You pay based on the weight as is similar to other similar Mongolian style restaurants. Then you add on any of the many sauces. Garlic oil and spicy sauce were very good. They cook it up and then you can have all the white or fried rice and miso soup you want with it. If you want you can top it off with some ice cream after dinner. The staff was very polite. Not very crowded so took no time at all. read more

If you are in the military, I cannot emphasize how critical it is to first get your boating license - sooooo worth it!!!! After you pass and receive your boating license, then you can rent boats and take the family out to the sand bar. Watch the videos, take the quiz online, pass the written test on the boat with the captain after the in-person boating class, and you're all set! Remember to take pictures of the flyers they pass around during the class, which has all the landmarks to remember while boating out to the sandbar - this helped me SIGNIFICANTLY; I would've gotten lost if I didn't remember these specific landmarks and please be alert for the coral/shallow signs!! First, get your boat license, check for low tides, then rent the boat (I got the pontoon boat), and we were off. The staff at the Marina at MCBH are extremely friendly and helpful, and even help dock the boat for you! They have all the adult life vests on the boat already, so you only need to bring the coast guard approved kids vests that they also provide for free. Don't forget to bring floats with ties, or chairs if you want to relax on the water. Be careful for the beautiful blue floating "flower-looking" creatures - those are poisonous jellyfish! We saw about five sea turtles just swim right by us (close enough to pet, but please dont!), and it was amazing!!!! Sea turtles are our favorite; they come up for air and eat the sea grass which is on the sandbar floor. MCBH Marina's staff are super helpful, the facility is clean, everyone is friendly, and they always provide us with experiences that make great memories! MCBH in Kaneohe Bay is an amazing base and we love living here! Many playgrounds, many surfing beaches, secret beach, low tide north beach is great to collect glass seashells, water playground, close to many beautiful gardens and beaches. Love this area! Also, the only highway we drive to go to the south, west, or north of Oahu is absolutely gorgeous because you're surrounded by the mountains on one bridge - so surreal! read more

My first memories was here at this base even though I was born on Pendleton. I had a wonderful time here with my friends and family. Growing up in Hawaii I will always love bananas, pineapples, the ocean, seafood and spam. Kaneho Bay will always be my home and yes I do get home sick. Which is why I will plan a trip in the near future. I went to Mokapu elementary and had fun there even though I didn't stay long. I've lived on a few different bases that have beaches but this one is definitely the best. read more

More on the smaller side if comapred to the other bases on the island i believe. Great facilities though! If you are in the military, work with the military, or retired from the military you get access to the MARINA: They have various sizes of power boats, fishing boats, pontoon boats, canoes etc., i think some of the boats hold up to 30-40 people. I think they charge based on 4 hour time intervals and size of the watercraft. Good part is to get your license to use the boat you basically sit in on a safety video class, answer a short multiple choice questionare, and then they take you out around the bay to tell you cans and can'ts. Awesome priveledge to be able to sail out to the sandbar on a nice sunny day and enjoy the simpler things in life that alot of people take for granted. Its been a few years since i've gone out but i would definiteley love to go out again once i get a group together. access to the GYM: Love the gym here: they provide you with towels, more than ample FREE parking. Excellent good working equipment. Also varied from the equippment at 24. A basketball court, sauna, showers. Still tends to get a little crowded at peak times 5-6 but mostly filled with motivated marines. which brings me to another topic. Ladies, you will get looked at hard here, more than other gyms. Marines don't get out much, so be prepared. access to the CABANAS: Log cabins right next to the beach. I haven't actually rented one out yet. They look sort of old from the outside. They're located in a more isolated area of the base. The same area where they have camp grounds. So it is very peaceful, and excellent scenic view of the bay from the beach area. If you have a military I.D card you can do all the shopping at the commissary or mcx or minimart, and they have a bar/club on base. read more

If you're lucky enough to have access, you have to visit the Kaneohe Marine Corps Base. The beaches here are a lot nicer (and less crowded) than some of the beaches on the island. My bf and I stayed in the cabanas for 6 nights total. The cabanas are located right next to the beach front. Our first two nights, we were in a cabana that was further away from the water but the privacy was great. The remaining nights, we stayed across form the bathrooms. While it was more convenient to stay closer to the bathrooms and beach, it was a little noisier than the first room we stayed in. However, you really can't beat how affordable it is to stay at the cabanas. I recommend staying there if you plan to be out all day. You can also rent boats to sail to the Kaneohe Bay Sandbar on base. The prices are very reasonable and something you should do during your stay here. I plan to explore this base more the next time I visit Oahu. read more

This is the best base out of all of the military bases on Oahu. It's very well kept, everyone is respectful of each other, cars actually stop for you when you're trying to cross the street, the restaurants serve delicious food, their gym has way better equipment than 24 Hour and is never as crowded, and their beaches are pristine. No wonder President Obama spends the better part of his time in Hawaii at Kbay! read more

USMC: masters of inefficiency The process to get a vehicle pass just to access base is asinine and unnecessary. Every military installation on Oahu from all other services allows access with just a military ID. The Marine Corps has elected to require everyone to register their vehicle before access is granted. Even a day-pass requires an excessive wait in the Pass and ID office. To register a newly shipped vehicle here, you have to go through the process twice! Highly recommend that active duty personnel show up in uniform to get to the head of the line. It is currently a Saturday afternoon and there are 22 people in line. Three clerks are working the desk and the line is not moving. Luckily I caught up with some light reading of the wall posters that warn all what proper USMC civilian attire and grooming standards are. Apparently a haircut inspired by Last of The Mohicans, high-water Dockers khakis, and a generic polo shirt is the birth-control ensemble recommended by Uncle Sam. Speaking of, the dependent woman in line in front of me was three weeks pregnant when entering the line, and now her water just burst and she is delivering an eleven pound baby. Unbelievable. Life is hard for Marines and anyone who has to associate with their ridiculous rules. Raaah. Kill........Time......Maybe myself before this line moves. read more

Possibly the most beautiful surroundings for any base in the entire US Military - certainly the Marine Corps - this installation is conveniently located between Kailua and Kaneohe with the stunning Kaneohe Bay at its doorstep. Possessing all the conveniences military members need - gas, Marine Mart, commissary, exchange, bank, fast food, O-club, golf course, gym, MWR marina, a track and playing fields... provides the entire military community on Oahu a nice alternative to Pear Harbor. read more

I've been to Kaneohe Marine Corps Base on different occasions and it's a well kept, smooth running military machine. It's almost like being on a different planet because everyone drives the speed limit or slower, the roads are well kept, and the houses all matching. You've got to admire the military's ability to keep everything in line. My favorite parts of KMCB are the Kaneohe Clipper golf course (amazing views from the back 9) and of course Bayfest! You'll need to have a military ID or a military sponsor to get on base, unless it's a public event. Be sure your car has its insurance and registration papers because they're sticklers at the gate. read more

This is one of the most picturesque Military Installations on Oahu. I work on a lot of the bases and KMCAS is my favorite. They have beautiful beaches (although off limits to civilians), clean and neat housing areas and some good restaurants. You can see the pride that they take here on post. I've got to say, the Military are good stewards of the land and oceans, beaches, marshes, etc. They keep them clean and pick up litter. Even if we civilians can't get on most times, we can rest assured that the environment is being taken care of. I hate to say this, but just take a look at what happened to Barber's Pt after the State got their hands on it... They can't even keep it clean for us tax paying citizens... Overgrown weeds, litter, dirty restrooms, you name it...Too bad... read more

Love this base. Nice PX and commissary, good beaches, the whole base is pretty and well-maintained. The Officer's Club has always been fine, but recently they (apparently) got a new chef and the food--lunch, which is all I eat there--is SO good. In fact, I will drive allllll the way over there just for the poke if my husband happens to be working on K-Bay that day (ie tomorrow--YUM!). We live near Schofield Barracks, despite being a Marine Corps family, and I am always so psyched to make it over to Kaneohe...it doesn't even compare to Schofield, if you're gonna be hanging out on a base. I wish we lived closer to this base; I'd defnitely utilize the gym, which also looks pretty sweet. OohRah. :) EDIT: The Officer's Club went WAY downhill, and fast. :( The last couple times we've been the service and food were bad. But the gym ROCKS, so there's always that. Good workouts, crappy restaurant = new weight-loss program????? Hmmmm. Another EDIT: OK, so now we LIVE here. Well, not on base, but very very close. So we're here at least every other day, if not more. I LOVE this base. Here's why: --THE GYM, of course. Yeah, it can get crowded and there's not a ton of free floor space for the kind of workouts I like to do (P90x or plyometric type stuff), but I always am super motivated just being here. I mean, really, what's more motivating than being surrounded by so many other (Hellllllo Marines! :P ) people who are in GREAT shape?? It's a good vibe for sure, and I've been to and worked in super hoity high-end gyms that just can't even compete. Also, they have a summer KidFit program (3 mornings per week) that is very reasonably priced and my kids love. And mama gets workout time. Win-win. --THE COMMISSARY ...On the smaller side, but I like it and many deals are to be had. I just wish they'd carry more organic options, especially meat. --THE LIBRARY--Such a great resource. My kids and I go a couple of times a week. --THE POOL--My kids love it, and I can chill out. And the slide is SUPER fun, as are the diving boards. Kids have to take a swim test (25 meter swim, 2 min water tread) to be able to go on the slide and low-dive. --BOWLING (K-Bay Lanes)--Disco bowl anyone? Clean, decently-priced. Great for your sunburn or a rainy day. --BEACHES. Pyramid Rock and North Beach are two of my favorites on this side. Nothing compares to KeIki beach on the North Shore (our old stomping grounds) but I like these better than the Kailua beaches. --THRIFT STORE: I have found a few odds and ends; it's not always the best quality, but we continue to go check it out because, when you do find things, it's SUPER crazy cheap. Like $1 shirts, 25-50 cent toys and books, $5 chairs, etc. It's nuts. The first time I got rung up I had to ask the woman if she'd included everything. (I think we had 2 books, a pair of women's shoes, a dress/shirt, 2 toys, and it was $3.50!!!) read more

When given the opportunity to drive into MCBH, I feel a sense of peace and realized how blessed I'm to be able see this place even for a brief moment. And especially my appreciation for MCBH cannot exclude the amazing views MCBH has to offer. As a civilian, I do not have access to this base but on the rare occasions an event allows the opportunity, I seized the day. I consider it one of the most beautiful places on the island whenever I look at the unique mountain ridges of the Ko'olaus. MCBH has such a breathtaking view (from mountain top to mountain base) of these angular and verdant young mountains. In addition, the beautiful blue waters of the Pacific Ocean serves as a perfect backdrop to the base's vantage points. No wonder they filmed Gilligan's Island here. MCBH, IMHO, has to be the most serene, well-maintained and secured base on the island. Friends advised me I must adhere to the strict rules here and it's paramount that i. e. I drive the posted speed limit and must refrain from touching a cell phone (hands free) or it would warrant a ticket. Warning dutifully heeded; I don't want to risk my chance of gaining access to the base. I like it too much to jeopardize the privilege. I'm fortunate to have been able to visit the Officer's Club, the miniature golf course and bowling alley. It's good to have a place where people can put on their best behaviors. This help keep the place quiet, clean and in order. All tenets of the military training and code of conduct can be therapeutic at times. More civilian places could benefit from this regimen but I digress. I hope MCBH stays this way for years to come, unlike the former Naval Air Station Barber's Point or now known as Kalaeloa. read more

Wow this base is so nice! It is also very big. I was able to take the scenic route as I drove around base exploring many sights. One thing that I do recommend is make sure you follow directions that are give to you! I actually took the scenic route because I ignored the directions to follow my GPS. I got lost. One great thing is that you are usually either in the residential area or you are not. One problem though is that all the houses look the same as do all the buildings. I was lost rather easily as there were no landmarks that I could make out. I really appreciate the on-base access that I was given to attend several events here. All of the military personal both on duty and off duty were very friendly and nice. I had even encountered a few that I asked for directions from that were really helpful. Some of the cool things I visited on base were the bumper boats and mini golf (both found at Tiki Island), bowling (at K-Bay Lanes), and a really nice club (the Officer's Club). Marine Corps Base Hawaii definitely has a lot going for it. If you're able to get base access, it's a must to stop by to experience at least once. read more

I was born and raised Navy and then eventually married to a wonderful sailor, weird how the world works right? Out of all the many bases around the world that I have lived and visited, nothing quite compares to Kaneohe Bay. It is a small gorgeous base, from the beaches to the layout of the housing, you get the best of it all. Everything is very well kept as many have reviewed, which is some times thrown to the wayside with other bases. As others have stated though, if you're on the base, stay off your phone, buckle up, watch the speed limit, respect pedestrians and focus on the road. My husband and I are trying to get base housing before he goes on deployment. We have all of our papers that they told us to get before we come back again for the 3rd time. They denied helping us again because we are missing another paper! So we grab it and this is less than 20 mins, and we come back since we have the paper.. she denies us AGAIN because the other lady is on lunch.... it was 10:40am... this front desk lady that you see first is so rude and she doesn't care about you at all. They really need to fire theses people and hire new and better people who know how to do their job that is friendly! I hate Marie Corp base housing THE WORSE EXPERIENCE OF MY LIFE. read more

From Pyramid Rock Beach, to the Marina or the golf course, MCBH is awesome. For those who haven't served, hook up with a service member or dependent and check out what MCBH has to offer. Keep in mind: drive the speed limit, stay off your cell-phone, and relax. I came to do the Swamp Romp 2012 and I had a good time. The mud run was just a flashback of past training, but I had a decent time. The only downside was there weren't many obstacles and the ones that they did have created a crazy bottleneck. MCB Kaneohe is a clean, well kept base. The guards are disciplined and courteous. Everything you should expect from a Marine base. Its almost like entering into a different world once you come on base.. The base has a couple great beaches for surfing and spearfishing.. The best thing about them is that they're not as crowded as other spots. But when a good swell hits everyone finds a way on base. Nice little spot for spearfishing or freediving. Lots of underwater caves, but current can be bad at times so be careful. And the golf course. Oh how I love the golf course. Not too challenging, but fun and amazing views on the back 9. I really enjoyed Nat N. and Dave F.'s review of MCBH. I whole heartedly agree with both of them... this is the nicest military base on the island! The grounds are very well kept, the beaches are gorgeous (we ARE on the windward side!), there are good restaurants... but more importantly, the people are just SO FRIENDLY!! People give way when driving, say things like "have a good day", please, and thank you... which I know isn't exactly crazy difficulty but sometimes people lose the 'aloha' or even common courtesy nowadays. I enjoy the views, the grounds, the amenities, the facilities, and the people on this base! Thank you for providing an outstanding air show to the community. Our first trip to the MCBH, and we were totally delighted.We were afraid that the crowds would be unbearable, but with military personnel directing traffic and parking the whole process was really painless. This review is about the AIR SHOW. This free event was full of stunt pilots, ground transportation, fire and a finale with The Blue Angels. No cash was used as SCRIP was purchased for all of your food and beverage items. We ventured into a large C-7 (maybe, not sure of the number) cargo plane. Talked to the plane's mechanic who was extremely informative. I asked questions like, where do you eat, sleep, use the restroom...all of the necessities that I find comforting. He was so polite and his humor was delightful. He really was glad to be a part of the plane's history. He even acted as our photographer and took a great picture of us inside the plane. We will be back next year. read more

What a base oh what a place! I've been to quite a few bases and none of them come close to how beautiful this one is. The view alone is enough to make you never want to leave and I mean that Yelper's and Yelpette's! If you get orders to this bad mamajamma, you better believe that you have the luck of the God's on your side baby! This base has got it all, from bowling to a movie theater that sells alcohol (For my fellow and fella friends that part take of the naughty water). Haha the streets are clean, most of the Marines are generally happy and the weather, although VERY rainy on this side of the island, it still creates a beautiful scene known to many as, "The Mountains Crying". For my political friends no matter how you feel about the guy, it's a good feeling to know Obama is visiting his home just a few miles from you! To finish for all of you guys that think California is beautiful, I just gotta let y'all know that Hawaii blows Cali straight outta da wadah! (No offense though) BOO-YAH!!! read more

I was in Hawaii taking care of my grandmother and had some time to kill, my aunt lives very close to this MCB and I can get on to any U.S base.. It was on the weekend so not much was going on, the base is clean and they have a great harbor that you can rent boats and fish in the bay. Almost all new houses and lots of updated stuff. Glad to see the USMC get nice stuff.. If you were in the USMC this would be on top of your dream sheet go to bases. Cant wait to go back. And if your a marine reading this, Thanks for all that you do for are country. read more

This place is a joke when it comes to physical security. First, they make military members, in uniform, with DoD identification card, get a pass to get in the gate. Once you get the pass and come in the gate, there's a sign reading "100% ID check". When I pulled up, I handed them my passengers identification who is a LT. The MP salutes me and never asked for my passengers ID. Then, they wanna make the MP's pull people over for not having their uniform top on inside their vehicle while driving. The post commander is a real tard! read more

I've encountered some people that forget they are in the land of Aloha, but it's rare. I love this base! And I think others do too.... the visitor's pass line is outrageous on the weekends!! We are impressed by the base and it's facilities. The only complaint involves one feature at the Officer's Club. We like to go there occasionally for brunch as the choices are many and the view is beautiful. However, we have had our privacy interrupted several times by a nice Hawaiian lady who feels compelled to tell her stories and sing to us - uninvited. On one occasion, we had our wedding party guests with us when she approached our table and began her schtick. My brother felt very uncomfortable as did I. During our last visit, she approached us again and barged into a private conversation. I politely asked her to leave because we wanted our private time. She acted very offended and apologized for presuming that we wanted to hear her "story". We felt a mix of guilt and discomfort afterward. It was difficult to enjoy our meal and we rushed out as soon as we could. Because of this constant intrusion into our privacy, we will not be returning the the O-club for brunch. There must be an option for this woman to interact with guests who welcome it while leaving alone the customers who want and need their privacy. I hope the management can resolve this situation. read more

This has to be one of the biggest Marine base I've been to besides Camp Lejuene...I'm just so jealous that they have not only a McDonalds but a Starbucks too. I'm AF and my husband is a Marine so I tell him that is a plus at any installation. I have yet to have the chance to visit the beaches here but I usually take my son to the small park to play which I really like because of the covered overhang and rubber grounds. read more

We went camping on this base. The sites are right on the beach and it was fun. Only 10$ for a night and we were able to rent all our camping equipment from Pearl Harbors Outdoor Rec for 40$; tent, chairs, cooler, ice, fish poles, sleeping bags... They had tons of stuff to rent. We had fun with our fire, snorkeling, tanning and drinking. Its pretty small, and has no shower and only an outhouse toilet, but it was a nice chill weekend. There werent too many fish but we saw a couple puffer fish, shrimp, and octopus! It was fun :) read more

Not the biggest base on Oahu but certainly the most scenic and it has the best beaches by far. Anything you need you can find on this base. It is like its own little self-sustaining town. The only downfall is, is that you need to be military, have base access, or be sponsored on. They literally have everyting, and I mean everything. Bowling alley, mall, marina, hotels, everything. No tax either! The gym is also a plus. Way better than 24hrs and cheaper too! I used to have a 24hr membership but after landing a job on base I left 24hr and saved a bunch of money. The base overall is well maintained and taken care of. read more
