Mario called the cops on us after we paid $160 to have 3 pairs of pants hemmed. Apparently, we were the only people in his tiny shop that day and a pair of pants he was previously altering went missing after we left. After wasting our time, the extremely patient police officer's time, and the jewelry store owner's time who had cameras, the pants were found when HE inadvertently dropped them in the corner behind his counter. Mario would not listen to reason and logic during this ordeal. (Why would someone pay an astronomical amount of money to have pants hemmed and then steal some random pants on a counter? ) All people involved, besides Mario, knew the absurdity and wanted to get off Mario's crazy train. I also should have called the cops on him for charging $160 to hem 3 pair of pants! Mario is a vile individual and should retire!! read more

In response to the below comment about my daughter being told to "lose weight" (I am her mother and was there at the time): First of all, the comment didn't "come off" as offensive, it WAS offensive, and I'm pretty sure "try losing some weight" is the same in every language. Second of all, if she had been someone who struggled with disordered eating, this could have sent her over the edge and caused irreparable damage. "Unfortunately I can't help you with this alteration" would have sufficed and we would have understood. Who doesn't love an old school tailor who appreciates men's haberdashery. Bravo Mario!.

The work is good but then again other tailors I've used over the years did good work too. The only difference is the price. It's 4-5x what I normally pay and if you're not careful the price could subtly, quietly, with a big smile, go up by hundreds, for whatever reason, late in the process. He's a man of few words so you have to listen closely. Again, in the end, the work was good but I paid too much mostly because Mario is local, I'm lazy, and he had already tailored my jacket when he shared that his efforts required an extra $150. This little "addition" to the price was delivered very matter-of-factly. As I stood there getting ready to pay, I had to choice to either dig in and say I'm not paying the extra $150, give me the jacket. Or pay up and take the high road promising myself I won't let it happen again. And I haven't. 5 stars for craft and convenience, knocked down to 3 for sketchy pricing. Extremely rude on the phone. I made the mistake of calling and asking first, how long a dress hemming job would take. My second mistake was asking if he could quote me the cost of hemming a dress. He began screaming at me that he doesn't give price and "it could be $500, it could be $1000". I hung up. Very rude. He could have simply said that he would need to see the dress to determine the price instead of shouting fake prices at me. read more

I went to Mario to have my suit tailored for my wedding. He told me it cost $400 to tailor it mind you I spend $300 to buy the suit.. when I told him I couldn't afford his pricing he then proceeded to curse at me and tell me my wedding and marriage will be s**t. I highly advise against going to Mario. He is rude, crude, abusive, disrespectful, not customer friendly, and he was not wearing a mask during the entire encounter. He continued to belittle, scream, and curse at me for 20 minutes before he gave me back my suit. This guy is a scary nightmare. Find a different tailor in the Stamford area. read more

Brought in a pair of pants with a broken zipper zipper. He replaced the zipper and it looked like new. I would definitely use his service again. read more

Mario is very old school in that he's cash only and frankly doesn't suffer fools. But he is a great tailor who knows what great tailoring is worth. His work on a bridesmaid dress for me was masterful, and done right on time. read more

Edit: August 2020. After being contacted via private message by a relative of Mario's, I stopped by to see if Mario had turned a new leaf. I wasn't expecting anything, but I can't lie, he was pleasant and welcoming! The price I was quoted was still on the high side, so I might take simple jobs elsewhere. But he was so friendly -- really trying -- that I'll give him business if I have something more complex. read more

I'm sure Mario is an excellent craftsman, but I cannot comment on the quality of his work because after speaking with him for only a few moments I decided to take my business elsewhere. I needed alterations made to a couple inexpensive suits. Normally I would just take this work to my cleaner, but their tailor works very limited hours in the middle of my work day which makes logistics challenging for me. I decided to give Mario a shot, so I swung by on my way to work. He claims to open at 10:30am, but when I showed up at 10:50, there was no one there. Frustrated, I decided to try again later, but this time I called first. Within minutes of walking through the door for the second time, he managed to insult my nationality, which I shrugged off. I handed him my suits, one of which still had the price tag; and after inspecting it, he started laughing and began mocking my clothing selection because they were made in China/Indonesia. He bragged about a customer who came in with a $6000 suit the other day and another who buys custom $700 shirts. Frustrated for having my time wasted and now angry, I bid him adieu. Mario, As a young professional in the dawn of his career, I don't have several thousand dollars to drop on a fine Italian suit. I make due with what I have and I expect to be treated with the same amount of respect as your other customers. Furthermore, if you must insist on maintaining your current level of pretense, I suggest you take a page out of your own book and look in the mirror. Your hole in the wall shop is dirty and disheveled, and your own dress leaves something to be desired. It goes without saying, but I look better in my Banana Republic dress shirt and Cole Haan monkstraps than you ever will in your Italian polo and Newbalance sneakers. Good day, sir. -B read more

Outstanding quality and true craftsmanship! Mario is real professional and everything comes out perfectly. He's a go-to guy if you want fixing/tailoring done and, for some people here it's surprising, yes, he's slightly more expensive than tailoring at a local laundry. Though, price difference is not that big when quality is far superior. My suit came out absolutely perfect. Also, I'm not sure why people here complain about his attitude. Mario "The Tailor" DaSilva began his career in his father's tailoring shop in Portugal when he was 13. This tells us two things: 1. He's not an amateur, and 2. His bloodline is that of a nearly extinct class of exquisite Old World European tailoring that includes craftsmen from Italy, Greece, Portugal, Spain, and others. I handed Mario a Brooks suit whose shape resembled more of a tent than clothing (I shall not expound on the reason why it looked that way but only to say that a steady diet of Special K (without milk of course!) all day can alter a human form rather dramatically). Rather than humiliate me (which is NOT in the Old World tradition), Mario pinched and pulled, pinned and chalked, discussed cuffs and breaks (all this while some Portuguese radio talk show was going on), and finally pronounced that he was going to take this flannel mess and turn it into a real suit. I decided not only that I would take him up on this challenge, but that I would go all in and pay him up front! The canny consumer that I am reasoned that I was probably the only customer stupid enough to do this, but that this was the Old World thing to do; that it was a signal of respect and good faith. While I winced at first at the price, calm befell me when I realized this was about one quarter of the price of the worst suit you could find at the Burlington Coat Factory. On parting I told Mario about the exquisite suit I had made for me in 12 hours in Hong Kong, which lasted about 6 hours before completely unthreading at the Hong Kong airport leaving me sans one arm. This bit of psychology was cleverly employed to warn Mario that I was no fool in matters tailoring. As I left the store I looked back to see if Mario was bolting for the nearest Citizen's Bank but the coast was clear. Two weeks later I returned. As the drums rolled I emerged from the dressing room (a little license here: if there was a dressing room I couldn't find it) and stood before a panoramic 3-D view of the best looking, best fitting suit I have ever seen, let alone worn. Not one teeny alteration required. I smiled. Mario smiled. The Old World is good! read more

Pro: Beautiful work. Cons: Very expensive. I understand paying for quality work, but I paid nearly the price of my pants for the hem. Not to mention, he insulted me by saying I was brining him cheap pants. I told him if I could but $600 pants that may be a different story. Being fleet of foot, but not particularly coordinated, I swiftly rounded a stairwell corner in my home when I felt and heard the distressing sound of my $1000 suit shredding on the handrail. The pocket had caught. Not good. Mario saved me from converting one of my favorite suits to a pair of slacks. Given the initial mess I handed him, I am shocked to this day that he could save it. But, he did. And, he is my tailor for the long haul. read more

I went to Mario to have a dress hemmed. He said it was an impossible job and that I was crazy for buying the dress in the 1st place. It was a normal dress... not sure what he saw. I then showed him a pair of pants that needed to be hemmed and he turned his back and said "forget about it". Terrible customer service! He was so rude! I went to another tailor and she gladly took the dress and pants and will have it ready for me in a few days. read more

I have used Mario in the past to fix the pocket of a suit jacket. He was quite expensive, but did do a pretty good job. This was about 2 years ago. I was recently handed a nice blazer where the sleeves were too long and the body of the jacket needed taking in. So I decided to visit Mario for a second time for pricing. Outrageous on the price, I kindly asked him to explain what it entailed to perform the alterations I needed. I guess he was having a bad day, didn't like that I was a younger gentleman (must have forgotten about my previous visit), didn't like shade of my skin, or felt disrespected that I was questioning him to justify the price so I could have more of an understanding as I am no expert in the tailoring business. He didn't even offer an explanation. Rather, he mocked me saying "why..why..why" and brushed me out of his little square office, which has gotten smaller since the last time I have been there. I guess his business isn't doing so good for a couple of reasons: 1) prices are high or 2) he's extremely rude and has ZERO respect for his customers. As I was leaving, I reminded him that I had been to him in the past and that I thought his work WAS good. I even went out of my way to see him first rather than going somewhere else. I should have known the price would be high, but I could have bought a brand new tailored jacket for the price he was asking for. I told him that this is not how you treat or retain your customers. I also kindly told him that I would NEVER recommend his work to anyone, not because of the craftsmanship but simply because of his attitude toward his customers. I regret ever giving him my business the first time, but am happy to say I will never walk into Mario the Tailor at 13 Spring St # 102 in Stamford, CT. Ciao! read more

I can not review his work as I took my business elsewhere. I brought in a bridesmaid dress that needed a hem. He said it would cost $150. As this was the price of the dress, I could not rationalize the price of the hem. Seems like a good, reliable tailor, but too expensive for my budget and quite high prices for the area. read more

Do not go here. It is a complete rip off. Just to give you an idea, to re-see one pants cuff cost $20.

Literally came in with a dire need to have my patches sown onto my Japanese Gi, last minute, and he did it the SAME DAY. Mario took his service to the next level by helping me fix my buttons on my Calvin Klein dress coat before I left the store. He only charged me a couple bucks to have that done. A man who simply cares about his work and wants to impact the Stamford community. I'll never go anywhere else. read more

He is not a friendly person, I visited his office and he was kind of aggressive and suggest that my clothes wasn't good enough to be tailored. I wouldn't recommend him, I have no idea about the quality of his work, however, only to talk with him for a few minutes I can realize how rude he is. read more

I had an expensive cashmere sweater, which I accidentally ripped a whole in - in the area around the elbow. Mario was able to do some magic and now it's looking like new - no ugly patches or stitches. And I don't have to hide the sweater under a cardigan anymore. read more
