It feels unfair to write a review for this place because I've been going to get my haircut by Mario since I was knee-high to a junebug. So, it feels like I'm writing a review for a relative, but since he's not: all's fair in yada, yada... This is a real old-school barbershop in every sense of the word. I come here for the gossip and aspersions as much as I do to get a haircut. Mario's clientele ranges from the average-Joe; to cops & firefighters; and even some upper muckety-mucks involved in politics. So, if it's happening in San Jose, Mario knows about it. I almost look forward to having a few people in line ahead of me so I can catch up. So, gossip aside, Mario does give a good haircut. Otherwise I probably would've bailed years ago. Mario's has a classic and classy vibe to it, and being in Alum Rock, SJ, there's a mix of OG men and up coming generations. Wait time: They only take walk-ins with the wait being 1-1:30 hours. It's usually shorter, but they give you a great buffer time to take care of errands and whatnot. Parking: There's parking behind the paint store across the street. Price: It's $25/cut with additions like tapering, line ups, etc. being +$2/ea. It's worth it because a great cut is one of the defining features of a man. I'm no expert in hair, but my barber had a lot of patience and asked many questions to make sure the cut was tailored to my preference (I'll ask for his name again next time and edit post). I searched for Barbershop's that were open during this Corona-19 and found these guys with the good stars. Haircut for my 13 yr old. I called ahead to schedule a time and day . Greeted at the door , they scanned both my son and I with a temp scanner, and sprayed our hands with sanitizer. Pleasant experience with good conversation. Great haircut "everyone has a good day" . I asked for it short, natural, and he put more time and precision than I ever got. This is the best haircut I've got so I'm going to come back. I wanna see what other looks he can do for me, I'm interested in having some longer hair on the top, I just don't really know much about hair so I'll ask him next time. I wanted to go the safe route, the thing I always get because I know what it looks like, and wow he really nailed it. He made it look like my haircuts mine and no one else can rock it. That's when you know a barbers good, when they can actually cut it to your head and never looking awkward or forced. Long overdue review, but Mario's Barber Shop is by far the greatest barber shop I've been to. Pat, Mark, and Tyler keep it nice and relaxed, making you feel right at home. Shout out to Mark for always taking care of me when I go - the man does an excellent job and will be sure to clean you up. This place is old school - in a really good kind of way. You aren't able to make appointments, but this allows the barber to take their time and make sure you're satisfied with your cut. I lived in the area my whole life and would see the shop as I passed by. I didn't have the pleasure of getting a haircut from Mario so I can't speak on him. I did hear he was a great guy and gave a great cut! Now that I've discovered the shop I've gotten a cut from all 3! Patrick -The new owner and one of the barber's there. Excellent hair cut! Very thorough and precise. Very nice guy! Mark-New to the shop but it seems he's been cutting for awhile now. I went in one morning when it was packed and he opened his chair to me! Clean fade into my comb over! Cool dude, always has a good attitude! Tyler-My go to guy! I usually roll in on Wednesday's so he always takes care of me. Cleans up my busted hair, clean fades, and my combovers are always clean! He'll tell you some funny stuff in between. Very nice guy! There's a lost art and feel at barber shops now. Been on a mission looking for my "go-to" barbershop since I moved and this is the spot. They really care how you look and they take their time with your hair compared to the other barbershops that cut your hair suspeciously quick for super cheap. However, a regular cut for $25 is a pretty good deal. There are three barbers there Tyler, Pat, and Mark. All three of them are great barbers and give great customer service! Make sure you tip them well. When you come in sign your name on the blackboard by the door to hold your place in line. They will honor your place in line (if you come in before closing) and will still serve you post closing time until the list is complete. read more
