This place is the heart of the Real Little Italy! Today is the fourth time we went there. FOOD: To start off they always serve a half loaf bread (Semolina) with olive oil; the two last time we been there was also sliced carrots in vinegar with garlic (it tastes so good). I am a seafood person. I love fish of any kind and when I'm able to try fresh fish, I do! I first tasted Zuppa de Pesce (over Linguini) in this manner in Torino, and since that moment it become one of my favorite dishes in this restaurant too! Simple yet delicious, it serves with vegetables or spaghetti in red special sauce (bought are great). For dessert I really like their cappuccino with whip cream on the top! PLACE: Good place for a diner with friends, family and even little children (have a high chair). When we walk in the door, we always get greeted by a warm and lovely atmosphere! Classic feel with Italian pictures, old family photos on the walls and white ancient columns. This place is always packed, so don't forget to make reservation! Great authentic place. If you wanna eat good classic Italian food go here. This place reminded me so much of my childhood but also had a little bit of a fancier vibe. Long history and old-school style interior showing its age has some charm but doesn't make up for the mediocre food. Nice touches were the carrots in vinaigrette on the table and delicious crusty bread. Octopus salad was tasty; too heavy on the vinegar and garlic on all these type of dishes. Soggy. J tried the mixed fish steamed in baratollo (in a jar) a strange idea but tasty. My saltimboca was swimming in a greasy Marsala sauce that tasted of margarine. S had the Bronzino filet baked with zucchini, also tasty if a bit over cooked. The service was professional and very good. Side veggie dishes also had too much oil and garlic. One meager little potato croquette came as a side dish. Better to chose the pasta side. We were the last table to leave, and clearly they wanted us out, but in a gracious gesture, they did offer a few extra free desserts with our coffee (they would be discarded anyway at the end of evening). This place has been my very top favorite traditional Italian restaurant since the 80's. Their pasta sauce is awesome and as I have always said ... if the pasta sauce is great then the rest of the food is great as well, It's a white tablecloth restaurant but not too expensive and service is decent. read more

I have been going to Mario's for 25 years! I love this restaurant and all of the staff who works there, especially Blenducci. He is extremely attentive, courteous and serves your food with love. Mario's was recommended by two people so I made a special trip from a Yankees game. It was good but not the Mecca of Italian I was expecting. Red sauce was excellent. Alfredo good, but not the best. Chicken Parm was good. Chicken Francese was awful. The bread was OK. Much better other places. The glasses are too small. Take two gulps and you need a refill. I walked from here to the nearest train and went through a bad part of town even though the waiter said it was safe. Won't be back. read more

Our first time on Arthur Avenue. Was able to get a very last minute reservation on open table. Bread was fresh and delicious. Our appetizers of fried calamari and a stuffed artichoke was amazing. Went there today for my first time in little Italy. Looked at all the restaurants I finally picked this one based on its reviews and history. Being in business for 100 years says alot. I went in at 1:30 was seated our waiter I believe is name was blanducci. I ordered appetizers. 3 of them he looked like he was upset I only ordered that first one came then the second one came midway through the second one the third came out he proceeded to put the plate on that of the second plate that we was eating from very tacky. After we eat we ask for the check he brings the check and throws it on the table. No class at all.prior to that the table in front of us the lady ordered a steak he puts the plate in front of her then sticks the knife right in the middle of the steak standing up...he has to be the worst waiter ever..needless to say I will not be returning there. read more

The best Italian restaurant on Arthurs Avenue. We visited the restaurant for lunch with the party of five and no reservation at 1pm Saturday. Luckily we did not have to wait at all and we had incredible pizza and pasta with octopus salad. The total price / person is less than $20 and great service. read more

Overpriced, tasteless, over cooked, disgusting food. Horrible service. How this place is still open is a wonder. Many better restaurants in Arthur Avenue. Service was horrible. Felt like stuff was heated in microwave and other diners leftovers were scraped on to our food. Hot antipasto and shrimp cocktail was gross. The eggplant and mushroom was raw in the antipasto and the shrimp and cocktail sauce was something you'd expect at a hot dog stand. The main meal was yet another horrible experience. Had lunch here today. Our server Ben was top notch, along with the rest of the staff. Greeted promptly, asked questions about the best bakeries in the neighborhood. Met the owner, super nice. Two words: pesto ravioli. OMG - so delicious. My mouth is watering just thinking about it. I had this on Sunday and was so happy, the cheese was oozing out of the raviolis and the pesto sauce was the best I've had. No wonder the chef is straight from the motherland - Italy - how else can you explain this type of execution? The food is amazing. You go in and they hook it up with seeded fresh bread then go straight for the pasta. My mom had The shrimp Oregenato with seasoned breadcrumbs and linguini which looked good too. We ordered the pizza as appetizer and it was So crispy and yummy. The OG boss still is around - this place is 5 generations. Keep it up Mario's! Your place is marvelous! I've been here twice. The seafood is always fresh. My favorite is the whole stuffed clams. Also got the Burrata, seafood linguine, lobster ravioli, eggplant rollatini. I went there with my daughter after the yankee game.Its a very old school comfortable retaurant.Great sauce for my fried calamari and my daughter really enjoyed her shrimp marinara.Its probably a little overpriced and the entrees take a little longer to come out but its well worth the wait as the food comes hot,fresh and delicious. All in all we really enjoyed our dinner and look forward to going back there read more

Great lunch special just had fillet oregano with pasta on the side for 13.95 That's right and it was not a tiny portion! The service was great and definitely the pasta cooked perfect! I love going to Arthur Avenue to pick up goods for the weekend so this review pains me a bit. Overall I gave it 3 stars, which is a generous 3. I thought the service was good but there were long delays in the food coming out of the kitchen. Other than that the food was hit our miss. The stuffed artichoke was bland at best. The hot antipasta was not good. Wasn't a big of the stuffed mushrooms or eggplant. To be fair the calamari was good. The entrees were good around the table. I had the veal francais. After coming back from Italy I wasn't a fan of the cannoli either. read more

Great outdoor dining taking reservations. Picked Mario's because Marissa was super helpful when we called to ask about parking and how Arthur Ave. has been during covid. This is one of the best Italian restaurants I've ever been too. The calamari was divine! So tender and seasoned perfectly. We had the lasagna and spinach gnocchi. This place was horrible. Not only were the plates, OVER PRICED, but the portions were pathetic and the food was just simply flavorless and gross. I felt sick when I left, and was out $50. What a waste of money!! The sauce is terrible and the pasta was old and hard. I was so angry when I left. Don't waste your money here. $22 for one piece of chicken that had NO seasoning on it. My husband and I were in the area so we decided to pop in for dinner. It was clean and the staff was friendly. It was pretty empty but it was a weeknight so I didn't think anything of it. The food, not so good. We ordered the escargot and it came de- shelled which wasn't what I was expecting but the flavor was fine. My husband's chicken francaise was tiny - it was basically half of half a breast pounded flat and the lemon was overpowering in the sauce. It came with a side of pasta which again was a tiny portion and the red sauce was rather bland - not terrible but not good either. For a $24 entree at an Italian restaurant, portions were pretty skimpy. I had the mussels in red sauce. Again the dish was not bad but not good. Their red sauce needs more flavor and not worth $26. There are plenty of Italian restaurants on Arthur Ave and we tried this one since we haven't been before and we won't be returning. We got home and my husband ate some leftovers from last night's dinner because he was still hungry. Maybe this is why it was so empty in the restaurant. read more

Not favorable for everyone!! In my experience with this place it is literally hit or miss. Some visits are great and others are straight disrespectful. My sister-in-law prefers this restaurant over Arthur Ave Trattoria (which I really do not understand why!!??) so I will come with her sometimes but I just can't anymore after my last experience... Let me clarify this by saying we went with a group of approximately 30 people and were served a "package" which included wine. Soda was NOT included, which was strange. Just water. Two bottles were put on each table: merlot and a white. Obviously there was not enough wine for the number of people at each table, nor did they care that we might have preferred a different wine. There was an extra charge, if you wanted a third bottle. Now, the food. Fish, veal parm and chicken. Since they neglected to furnish our group with cards indicating preference (which they stated was the normal way they worked) we had to tell the waiter what we had pre-ordered. A man at our table advised them at the beginning that he had ordered fish, but when the surly waiter got around to him, all they had left was veal and he was told he had to take it or leave it. Veal was terrible: thin and tasteless; those who ordered chicken franchese said it was dry and the fish left a lot to be desired also. Coming from a county outside of NYC, we will choose to spend our money in the numerous local restaurants which serve better food, have good service and don't involved going into NYC in the future. Service: nasty, surley waiters. Someone wrote that the father had started this place and it used to be so good, but obviously this was not passed down to the sons who don't deserve our or your patronage. Whoever wrote that this was the "greatest" must be delusional. I admit we were with a group and they think we will probably never come back, so it didn't matter, but people talk and share both good experiences and bad. So, I shared. Good luck if you go here. We are local New Yorkers who were in the area for the Train Show so we stopped in for dinner. I usually avoid "little Italys" as they tend to be tourist traps but based on convenience we tried it anyway. It was a crowded evening and we were extremely patient with the service as we saw how busy it was. We ordered pasta, soup, salads, chicken fingers, and a veal and chicken dish. The "sauce" was bitter and almost brown. The salads were completely overdressed and the pasta was over cooked. But the worst part of all of it was that no one ever bussed our table, so we had piles of dirty plates sitting there for the entire meal, and when we asked for the table to be bussed three times, the attitudes given were awful. Then after having to eat most of our meal in a mess, the waiter had the nerve to ask for his tip in cash. We left hungry with plates of uneaten food being sent back. Never again, don't waste your time here! read more

Disappointing. Classic old works Italian atmosphere - warm and cozy - but the food was only fair to average and portions were very small. Our waiter told us a portion was enough for one to two people to share but they were small for just one person (and we are not particularly big eaters). Pasta was okay- order spaghetti with meat sauce (yeah that is my favorite pasta dish if i'm going to an italian restaurant oh wells) it didn't taste like they're was meat in the sauce at all. service was horrible, i actually think he didn't like us, and i ordered wine. but whatever, he basically ignored us. well not going there again. will have to try another arthur avenue restaurant. read more

Disappointing. Have wanted to go to this place for ages and really wanted to like it. Great fresh bread on the table. Had a Caesar Salad, very unconventional Caesar taste - not bad, but didn't taste like a Caesar Salad. Then had a penne ala vodka (which they got wrong - I asked for Linguini) with Shrimp. Shrimp done perfectly, pasta done al dente but vodka sauce ... once again ... very unconventional ... liquidy (not thick), very light in color ... didn't taste like vodka sauce. A dinner partner's rigatoni marinara ... once again ... cooked al dente but the sauce ... was about as far from marinara sauce as I have ever tasted. The issue is the recipes.
