3.5 stars, but I'll round up to give the benefit of the doubt. Read on for details. Superb service and communicative staff, but selection did not meet expectations. I was really looking forward to trying this place because I kept walking past it, so I looked up their menu and was ready to order when they came back from the holiday weekend. I was impressed with what they advertised that they could do with Rooibos tea (my favorite) but was disappointed that they didn't have any white chocolate to make a Red Symphony as shown on the poster hanging on their wall. I was also disappointed that they didn't have the vegetables to make the panini that I wanted--actually, they said none of the paninis were available, so maybe they were out of bread too. When I asked about an omelette, they said it was for dine-in only and would take 15 minutes to make. I settled for a toasted croissant with orange ginger marmalade, which was good but not exactly what I was looking for. I was also disappointed that they didn't have any chocolate pastries. Perhaps they were low on ingredients after coming back from holiday. I will say that they have excellent communication skills and made great effort in trying to help me find something that they could make and I would be happy with. They were also able to do this while not holding up the line behind me, which is impressive and relieved me of feeling any guilt, even though none of this was my fault. The woman at the counter was incredibly sweet, and Mario made sure she gave me a tray for my drinks. The drinks were okay, and I'd come back to support a small business, but only if I'm not picky about what I'm getting. read more

What a cute little coffee shop in downtown Vancouver. I am a coffee snob but I love little cafes and this fits the bill perfectly. The owner Mario was very jolly and definitely put a smile on my face all the 4 times I have had coffee there. The mocha was delicious and unlike other most of the places, the sugar was balanced perfectly with rich coffee and chocolate taste. A friend of mine told me this coffee shop has the best coffee in town and they are famous for it. Because they are super close to my office, I have decided to give this place a try. I am not a big coffee drinker but when I arrived I noticed they have penne. So why not get one one of those. I ordered a mario torino and I was like wow. This is the best sandwich I have ever had so far and that is because the they were generous on the cheese and plus its real cheese. It had some pickles on the side. Those were some good home made pickles. Overall, I loved their sandwiches. Will come back that is for sure. read more

I went into Mario's Coffee and didn't end up buying coffee. I had a craving for a scone and got the last spinach and feta one. It was a little small and the price is average, but it hit the spot. If it were a little more buttery, that would be been perfect. The staff was incrediably friendly and the man behind the counter seemed like the owner. What a find! I was looking for the art gallery on Howe featuring the Salvador Dalí exhibit, getting distracted by the cool items in the Holt Renfrew Men windows. Needed an afternoon nosh and walked into Mario's. I felt like I had stepped into a charming little cafe in Madrid. I have had the benefit of extensively traveling for work throughout North America, South America, Europe, and Asia enjoying great coffee. I was in Vancouver for the week, and while walking up Howe Street, saw a small sign on an unobtrusive shop claiming "voted best coffee in town". Hmmmm. Maybe hyperbole, but an afternoon cup of coffee would be nice. Amazing 1. Funky little place with great music 2. The staff couldn't be happier or friendlier 3. Even a "drip coffee" is made one-at-a-time 4. Sounds ridiculous, but Mario truly crafts the coffee My cup (and every subsequent cup this week) has been incredibly flavorful, smooth, with no trace of bitterness or the "burnt" taste common with the "mermaid" brand. The consistency over the 4 days has been spot on, every cup has been dead center bullseye. The omelette and egg sandwich are both quite good also. Super nice spot for a nice Italian coffee and pastries. I feel back home when I go there (Europe). The owner is super nice and take of each client. The lady behind the counter is so friendly, it is a pleasure to talk to her. I am Gluten Intolerant and she made me an omelet with cheese and turkey with no bread. We were in Vancouver overnight and at a hotel on Howe Street. There's several places for coffee in this bustling area and we walked to a few to check them out before settling on Mario's. Mario's drew us in with lively music playing that is heard on the street and a quaint look. Once inside, we were immediately reminded of the great coffee places we visited in Florence, Italy. We both ordered cappuccinos and a pastry. The cappuccinos had perfect flavor and the correct amount of foam. The pastries were light an fresh. I saw others who ordered omelets and they looked great. Mario is friendly and greets everyone with a hardy "Good morning." It's not the kind of place for breakfast where you are waited on and you can order french toast or eggs benedict. I saw this randomly when doing a search for something else on yelp, therefore, book marked it since May 5th. The place is small and cozy, busy with products and very very inviting. The minute I walked in I was greeting by what I assumed was a father/daughter combo. If I am mistaken I wouldn't have known they seemed that close with good working chemistry which is important to me. I did the silly thing of forgetting my wallet, however, they allowed me to come back an hour later to pay them back which was awesome and friendly. Mistakes happen. I appreciated how the barista asked me the type of tea I wanted for my London Fog: Earl Grey or English Breakfast. They use a non soy based Almond milk which is appreciated. The coffee is outstanding, Mario is a sweetheart and so are the other two gals I've seen working there. Mario makes his own coffee blend and it's strong without being too acidic. Neat little shop run by Mario. He's the only one who runs the machine, so you don't need to worry about a poorly trained barista ruining your drink. When he goes on his annual holiday back to Argentina, the shop is closed - something about that old-style "mom and pop" business culture makes you really enjoy patronizing his coffee shop. This spot is a true business-district classic. On weekdays, Mario himself serves up fresh brews and steaming americanos. Expect soccer to be on the tv during game season and lively Latin music during the rest of the year. The taste of the coffee is finely crafted and delicate, but the after-buzz is akin to a caffeine high. Personally, it makes me shaky. Best coffee ever. Had the smoked salmon toast and it was very good but it's the coffee and the owner that will make me come back to this place. Wish I could take it to Ottawa with me! Sat at a little counter by the window, this place is busy! I wish I could give them more stars, but I've seen the man who I think owns the place be really rude to some of his customers or almost customers (Never to me though).
