In the 10 or so years I have been in Arlington and gone past Mario's (and Carvel), never have I stopped in. That changed this past weekend. Always wondering if people do stop in, I got my answer.. the answer is yes. The inside is small so the goal is to order and wait outside (they'll open a window and call out order numbers). The staff are friendly but they are also fast trying to get orders in and send people out to not congest the inside. Hey friends! Long overdue review as I've been a customer since 2022. I really love that even with ownership changes the quality stayed the same! I'm a sucker for a good mom and pop shop and This restaurant is one the oldest standing restaurants in VA. I always order the steak and cheese with fries. It's packed with so much meat, toppings and flavor! The bread is always toasted perfectly as well. The fries are frozen fries but still delicious! Perfectly salted. The sandwiches are huge, you definitely get what you pay for. -Customer service is always great. -No indoor seating, just outdoor seating on their patio. -This location also has an ice cream shop with over 25 flavors! I looked this place up to stop by for lunch today, and I was confused as I approached the restaurant. The sign shoed Carvel ice cream yet I was looking for Mario's. I needed to take a second look to realize that they are one in the same. I was a little bit shocked to see how much their lunch costs now. I had actually ate at Mario's years ago, and this place did not appear to be even similar at all. Its now $21 for a Philly style foot long steak and cheese. That's without fries and a drink. The smaller 8" version is nearly $17. I got the foot long and honestly the sub was nothing like I remembered. This chain used to be so famous for huge pizzas and subs for fair prices. That was Not the case today. Also the gentleman who took my order was like 'what do you want' nothing friendly or nice at all. Mario's is nostalgic for me and despite a mediocre meal I would probably still return. Pizza- 7/10. Way better than I thought or remembered with a crispy crust. Cheesesteak - 6/10. This is what was most disappointing. It was a good portion, bread was the right kind of soft, it just felt like something was missing. Wings - 5/10. Just kind of wet and disappointing. Drink, "watermelon lemonade refresher": 1/10, pretty sure this was koolaid and we threw it away. I was surprised the pizza was the winner and we'd come back to get a whole pizza another time! Customer service was not accommodating. I specifically requested extra sauce on my pizza. Once I got home and began to eat the pizza, it didn't have any sauce on it. Called to share the experience with the team and to see what they could do, they did not want to issue the refund because I am 30 minutes away not able to physically bring the pizza back. Requested their information to send pictures/videos/ or even a FaceTime call for them to see that the pizza was 95% left and Would be discarded after. The team member who I spoke with just kept repeating the same thing and would not assist with offering a refund. Definitely would not recommend this pizza place for pizza. Longtime Arlington institution and spot for late-night eats and pizza. As I was driving back to DC, I couldn't help but to notice the Mario's sign calling me and decided to stop here late last weekend. Being a fan of this place during many late nights when I lived in this area after college, I was craving that "back in the day" nostalgic experience of good cheap eats and was seeking to satisfy my late night hunger pains from hanging with friends in Arlington. Welp...so much for that. It was a fail and the experience deserves 2.5 Stars at best. To be honest, this place used to be sooooo good back in the day when Joe & Lefty (long time cooks and employees of this establishment) were running things---from the pizza oven to the greasy spoon grill where you could once get the best cheesesteaks ever. Now things seem to have fallen from grace and not as good. The menu consist of mainly pizza, subs and fast food eats such as wings, chicken tenders, jalapeño poppers...and my favorite...Carvel ice cream! There are many times now, I just skip over the food and stop here mainly for the Carvel ice cream Sundaes and chocolate-dipped cones. They are addictive and some of the best sweet eats! They also serve milkshakes and ice cream sandwiches which are just as good. Personally, speaking, the Carvel ice cream is what makes this place a repeat on my list. They offer a variety of ice cream flavors and it is a perfect fix all season; especially during the summer time. You can also order Carvel ice cream cakes here as well. Don't get me wrong, the food is decent. Not the worst, but definitely not the best My only gripe is the price point for what you get here. This place has been around for years and was known as "the place" to be to get great late night food, pizza and cheap eats in the DMW. That era and time has definitely come to past for Mario's. I ordered 2 supreme pizza square slices that were subpar.... lemon pepper wings - six piece that were over-cooked and lacked flavor....and a drink. The crust on the pizza was not crisp and buttery like it used to be and the sauce which used to be magical....was bland and not hittin'!! The taste, the toppings on the pizza and quality factor of the food purchased was no where near what it used to be nor justified the price. The combination of the 2 pizza slices and wings ran me roughly $30 bucks! And, was not worth it. In all, a cool nostalgic vibe but does not quite hit the mark on the food. Surprisingly Philly cheesesteak here at Mario's (located in Virginia) is actually better than Gino's, Pats, and most cheesesteak places in Philly. It's also better than Al's Cheesesteak in Alexandria, VA. You don't get much for $18 here at Mario's. This hoagie is about half the size of a Vietnamese Banh Mi sandwich, but overall it's pretty good and not disappointing as with most cheesesteak joints in Philadelphia. read more

There is no mention of Lefty special", but the Steak & cheese has picture that LOOKS like Left special with the cole slaw, etc. I ordered with extra pickles and got a PLAIN sandwich with lots of pickles. Confusing since the picture looks like the original Lefty. There is a dropdown menu that you can add, slaw, mustard, mayo......but I didn't think I needed to add those? PLUS, how do I know what was in the Original Lefty's? Are there onions? I never, ever seem to get the order correct! ALSO, with ordering for pick-up you have Slice, doordash, grubhub etc.......do they ADD to the prices?? In the store a 7 inch is listed as $15.99........order online is $17.99!! This place isn't fancy, and it doesn't pretend to be. This is pizza for when you want to turn the lights off, eat in bed, and not see another human being within a 5-mile radius. It's not delicate, it's not curated, and it doesn't need to be. Not every pizza needs to be Neapolitan, come with a TED Talk, and have artisanal hot honey as a topping option. People seem to talk about how the cheesesteak either was or is great here, and honestly, I believe them. But I'll never know firsthand, because the cheese pizza calls to me every time. As someone who researches and tests pizzas to a medically concerning degree--whether that be here, Manhattan, Brooklyn, North Jersey, or New Haven, I can confidently say this isn't really pizza in the traditional sense. It's something else entirely. But it scratches the itch, and I love it. Should I tell everyone to come here? Maybe not. It depends on their level of interpersonal integrity--they might not be ready. My Pops is from Arlington so Mario's was always a familiar presence growing up. Decided to give it a try many years later as an adult, hoping that it would wow me as it had as a child, unfortunately, it didn't. Just wasted my money. I ordered a fish sandwich and when I received the sandwich it was greasy, smashed flat and there was barely any fish on the bread. I called to speak to someone to get this resolved and they refused to fix the issue or refund me for the sandwich. I was so excited to try Mario's but was highly disappointed. You can tell the difference and that there is new ownership. Customer service was ok. The food was expensive and not worth the price. Pizza was dry. Steak n cheese was meat was not seasoned well and there was not enough meat on the sub especially for the price that I paid. I would not recommend. My husband used to work within walking distance of Mario's back when Joe and Lefty worked there. We live in Michigan now, but we make a stop here every time we are in the area - 2-3 times a year. The new ownership is very friendly. And the most important part (the food), is still of great quality. We had the Philly steak and cheese, and it's still very tasty! The "different " things they do with this sub is that the pickles are sweet, not dill. It adds quite the interesting zip! When my wife told the folks there of our story of coming back a few times a year, they gave us two slices of pizza for free! Niiiiiice! The pizza there is unique in the dough is thin-crust, but very dense. Two slices for dinner is all you need! I would recommend both the subs and pizza. read more

Wow, have times changed. I remember when Marios was the place to go for a delicious hot sub after a night out on the town for a reasonable price. They were open late and there was almost always a long line. Today, no one was there and the parking lot deservedly empty. It's like the place was suddenly bought by Private Equity. Now the food is beyond Top Dollar for minuscule portions of poorly prepared food that you have to order behind bullet proof glass. A "large" sub had about as meat as a small McDonalds, where you'll find the beef hiding under the pickle. Everything was so full of pepper there was no other perceived flavor, like the meat was spiced over. The use real ribeye steak ( not that flake beef) and you can add lots of stuff like ham, eggs, green peppers, onions etc. The pizza has a crunchy bottom crust..much better than the soggy crust other places have. The BEST subs in the area. Hands down. I used to come here weekly when I was in college. Great post-night out food to offset the bad decisions. Always tasty and filling. I happened to be in Arlington today, and was a little nostalgic for a Marios experience. I thought I he'd read they closed, but as I turned the corner there it was "Mario's Pizza House" and Carvel (an addition a number of years ago). I first came here in the late 1990's, so I do not date back to 1957. Obviously since Covid sit has changed hands. the original magic sauce on the pizza did not transfer. Although it looks the same. The sauce and crust do not cut it. The sauce tastes bland and crust is way too soft. The service behind the bodega type of plexiglass is really horrible. You can't hear and the conversation between the guy behind me and the counter guy / pizza maker / cook regarding the toppings of a philly cheesesteak and "who puts mustard on a cheesesteak?"... Well I've only ever had pizza here... my memories will remain that and I will not be back. My dad has been ranting and raving about this place for years, so I just had to try it. We met up on a Wednesday evening, and the place looked like a lunch time rush. You could tell that the customer based was comprised of "regulars" who knew just what they wanted and how they wanted it. We chatted with a few of them while we waited on our orders. This is a great local spot for American lunch food. They specialize in oversized subs, wings and pizza. They share space with Carvel icecream shop and I almost always grab a soft serve cone of chocolate/vanilla swirl while waiting for my food. I usually stick to subs however they have very good Sicilian pizza as well. I order either a Philly Cheesesteak or Grilled Chicken Sub which essentially is a Chicken Philly. Considering Philly Cheesesteaks are my favorite style of hot sub, this place comes darn close to an authentic Philly cheesesteak however Mario's subs are good enough to stand in their own and distinguished from any other sub shop. Clarence and Jackson often times are on the grill when I visit and it's hard for me to have anyone else prepare my sub. They are great cooks and prepare my subs just how I like it. Whether it's chicken or steak chopped finely, extra onion, American cheese, cherry peppers and Mayo which is a version of the traditional Philly cheesesteak. The fact I don't have to travel to Philly for an authentic cheesesteak makes Mario's special. I've been coming here for over 10 years and it's worthy of a 5 star because of their consistency, friendliness and quality for a non-dine-in takeout restaurant. I've tried their fries, wings, pizza, burgers, fish, hot dogs and blondies. Other notable items you may want to try is the Lefty Sub (which has lettuce and mustard), Bradley Beal (Washington Wizards guard iconic bbq chicken sub) and their Sicilian pizza. Not sure if canned mushrooms are a thing, but they are mushy, very salty and taste different than mushrooms I usually get on pizza. July 2020 - COVID Review: For my hubby's birthday, he wanted to go here to try their steak and cheese subs since we heard good things from our friends. I know there's a lot of negative reviews and yes, for a place that has "pizza" in the name - you shouldn't go here for the pizza. We got 3 subs so that we could try a variety: the Lefty, Philly, and Triple. By far the Triple was our favorite! But that's also because we love cheese. Generous portions and definitely tasty subs! We were in the area and just had to have Mario's again. We ordered ham, steak and cheese subs and two slices. We found the sandwiches were generous with tasty ribeye, chopped ham -- not sliced! -- and a good amount of provolone. These sandwiches are made for slaw, which filled the bottoms of the buns and added a nice texture. We also asked for pizza sauce on top. I noticed that this sauce was different from previous -- more flavorful, more meaty. All this plus a few pickles and mustard on mine made for a truly wonderful sandwich! The pizza also was improved by that sauce. I am still not a huge fan of the pizza, but it has come up a few notches on my "fat boy scale." I see a lot of 1 star reviews, mostly from folks who haven't been on Yelp much. I respect your opinions, but completely disagree. This place is great for a belly filling sub. This place is such a cute gem! Beautifully maintained time warp of a late night bite spot. Classic Americana. Love the murals and the kitsch. I've been a couple times before for Carvel and had the savory food tonight for the first time. The service was fast and friendly--I think they could tell we were newbies, so they gave us both a slice of cheese pizza and a large soda for free to round out our meal! The pizza is a great simple Sicilian style--fresh and filling. Our favorite for the sweets is the Carvel Sundae Dasher--basically a sundae parfait. They're huge, and we got two for ~$8 total. This is definitely a place to go to indulge for a cheat meal. You get a good value and have so many options.
