That was getting the job done, but after multiple budget, utilitarian haircuts, I thought my hair was definitely starting to grow out a little weird. So I decided to give Mario's a try again. I can easily give this place 5 stars! Pepe is Boston's best kept secret. I'm reluctant to give this review because I don't want to have to wait 2 week for an appointment!! I've spent $100 on haircuts many many times... Pepe delivered a better hair cut hands down. He just knows what he's doing... He's experienced and can be trusted. I had a TERRIBLE experience here. I will give them that they are slightly cheaper than surrounding salons but if you want what you went in for, you should look elsewhere. I saw Allen for highlights and a cut. I have been getting the same thing done for at least the last 10 years and have never had anyone have a hard time with it. Instead of subtle blond highlights, I received bright red highlights. An attempt was made to fix it but it was still red! I had to pay double to have it fixed at another salon. Do yourself a favor and pay a little more to have it done right the first time. read more

Don't get your eyebrows waxed here if you can help it. Seeing all these positive reviews here about Mario's confirms my suspicions that it really depends on who works on you. If you insist on going there, it would be a good idea to learn a few names before you head over because if you walk in (like I did, after reading so much positive feedback) expecting painless perfection, you might end up like me - a big fat ugly 3mm scab under my brow. Yes, I got my eyebrows done, my EYEBROWS! nothing short of a bikini wax should hurt, so I shouldn't have to make a fuss about this. But I. have. to. The woman practically ripped the skin under my brows and left me squinting in pain as she held up a mirror and asked happily if I liked it. At that point my eyebrows were BURNING, but no visible bleeding, so I let is pass. On second thought I should have said something, only I'm generally not the expressive/confrontation type, and my eyebrows did look better (surely they must for the price I paid!). Eventually the pain subsided, but the inflammation didn't. Now the blotchy redness has scabbed over and it looks like a shaving job gone wrong. In a week or two I'll need another wax - hopefully by then the scab will be gone and I'll be wiser than to take yelp's overall ratings for granted. I should have asked for her name, but I scrammed. read more

I wanted to get my first bikini wax and people on Yelp said that Rosa was good so I called up Mario's and requested Rosa. I had no trouble getting the exact time I wanted because they didn't seem to have anyone scheduled that day. When I told Rosa that I wanted a Brazilian wax but it was my first time getting waxed she said that might not be a good idea so she would start out with slow and see how I could handle it. Well, the first half was fine, no problems. I figured I could handle anything! She chit-chatted throughout and made me feel very comfortable. By the time she made her way over to the second half I was getting tired from managing the pain and it started hurting more, which she said was normal. By the time it was over I'd had enough but I was pleased with the results and was very thankful that it wasn't any worse. I decided that next time I'd ask to leave a little bit in the front. The total cost was $40, with tip I think. I would go back to Rosa again. read more

This is specifically for Rosa and her amazing waxing! Having gone to some chain salons in Boston and gotten so-so waxings that make you feel like getting a wax is like going thru. a drive in, Rosa on the other hand puts time and care into this delicate operation. She takes her job seriously, as you can tell by the magnifying glass/lamp she uses in comfortably back room. For what it is, its practically painless and she makes you feel comfortable right away. Mario's is a pretty decent place for a haircut and I'd say it's fair as far as price goes. It feels like a local Somerville place - maybe a bit classier. They are good at remembering people, either by face or even name, which is nice. I recommend Pepe - he is one of the best I've had (at least for a guy's haircut) and pays attention to details. Only problem is, he seems to be so popular that a last minute appointment is all but impossible (even 1 or 2 days in advance sometimes). I guess that's a good thing though! read more

Finding a non-salon place to get a good haircut for a reasonable price ($20) is difficult for a male needing a cut every 3-4 weeks. Mario's fits the bill and the owner is great to work with. On top of that, they are open late during the week. I've never understood why neighboring places are only open 8-5.... I can't comment on haircuts, but I've been coming here for the past 4-5 years just for Rosa. She's the master of the Brazilian wax, and for only $35! Even when I skip out and don't come in for months and months, she always remembers me (and tsk tsks me for not coming in sooner!) She puts me completely at ease during the process. She's like the adorable Italian grandmother you never had. She'll chat with you and make you laugh while she waxes, but in terms of the waxing process itself, she's quick, thorough, and no-nonsense. She'll have you out of there in 10 minutes, and she does a great job. Also, the chocolate wax smells great. Others have complained here that you keep your undies on and hold them to the side - meh, doesn't bother me in the least bit. I've had friends who felt uncomfortable taking it all off or putting on weird paper underwear at other salons. At least it's distracting! She'll tell me where to put my hands, and I end up thinking more about that than the wax strip half the time. I've also gotten several eyebrow waxes here, and yet again, Rosa is fantastic. She paints on the wax freeform and always does a perfect job. I don't want my eyebrows too thin, just cleaned up a bit - she does this perfectly and shapes them nicely. It takes maybe 2 minutes for the eyebrows. I'd say for the price and the convenient location, you can't beat Rosa. If she ever left Mario's, I'd follow her anywhere! read more

I've been a client since I was a teenager, now I am nearing 50. Peppi cuts my hair and as my kids have grown he does their hair (two sons, one daughter) and I can always get an appointment for any of us and come out with a great cut. AND I do not pay a fortune for the service. Any number of the women in the shop have done my eyebrow wax & also always come out great. It is a family run business but it is professional, clean and open very convenient hours. Happy to be a client. Sabrina has done my daughter's hair and make up for many of those important high school moments (prom, semi formals, yearbook photo) and she is so sweet to her. LOVE Rosa there. She does a fantastic. brazillian and she shapes my eyebrows so nicely, I've had no complaints every time I've had her.

I never had a good brazilian until I met Rosa. She was fantastic. I never feel the need to leave my underwear on, but apparently that's her M.O., so whatever. Zen has you take it off. I'm cool either way. Yes, you have the stretch your skin during a wax. Ladies, suck it up. You have to help your tech with the procedure; she only has two hands and needs them to deal with the wax. You can be helpful and stretch your own skin to avoid a lot of screamy pain and bad bruising. Rosa and Zen use chocolate wax with paper strips and do about a two-inch strip at a time. This was much less painful than the hard wax used on me by other techs. The process goes quickly, and Rosa is VERY thorough. I prefer her to Zen. She even had me flip over and did the back, which I'd never had anyone do! Really well done, and she's very personable and has a sense of humor. The only reason I'm giving four and not five stars is because neither Rosa nor Zen use any topical anesthetics. Take some ibuprofen an hour before you go in, and invest in some "No Scream Cream." I smear a liberal dollop of pain relief neosporin on the nethers before I head over, let the lidocaine soak in, and then when I get to the salon I wash it off so I can be cleaned and powdered prior to the wax. It's over in 20 minutes and I barely feel anything. read more

I've been getting my hair cut at Mario's since I was born and though I've occasionally gone to other places, I've always found Mario's to be the best. It's a pleasant atmosphere, a lot of chatty Italian ladies and faithful customers. Zen has given me bobs in the past, as well as longer, layered 'dos. They take their time washing your hair, blow drying and straightening. Their products are great. I've had my hair colored there several times and always been satisfied with how long it lasts and how great it looks even when the roots show. read more

So I have been going to Mario's for a year and half. Zen usually does a good job, except for today!! I usually let her cut my hair when it's dry so I can make sure she isn't getting scissor happy, but times are a bit rough and I opted to let her cut my hair wet. The cute she gave me was ok, except she cut side swept bangs too short. Of course I am pissed that I look like a tweleve year old, but here is the real kick in the nuts. When I told her it was too short, this was her response, but YOU pointed to your eye..(i didn't I wear glasses, no one wants side bangs starting at the eye) then she says I can only do my best... Really Zen is your best to cut way too much hair off and then blame the client. Not to mention she didn't even style my hair. No mousse, no gel nothing. SO I guess it wasn't enough to leave there in tears, but with a huge frizzy head of hair too!! Thanks alot, but I won't be coming back!! BTW, as I was cleary upset, she then told me she liked my tee-shirt....really...instead of a compliment why not just apoloigize!!! read more

Checked out Mario's for the first time today and have never been more pleased about a haircut. Walk-ins are welcome but I called a day ahead of time to schedule an appointment and quickly got a convenient time. Staff was kind, inviting, helpful, and informative. I got scheduled with Pepe and he did a fantastic job. He was a thorough, affable, a gentlemen, and did a great job. Cuts for guys run in the $20 range and you get more than your money's worth. I experienced my first Brazilian wax with Rosa who made it as quick and pain-free as possible. I was shocked at how comfortable she made me feel. Rosa is also very thorough, inspecting her work with a magnifying glass and tweezing any strays that the wax may have missed. The small talk throughout makes the time fly. I walked into Mario's today at 4pm, knowing that they closed at 4:30. Thinking that there would be no way that I could get in for a haircut, I was pleasantly surprised when Rosa said she could take me. She worked quickly, but I never felt like she was rushing me out the door. Half an hour later, I walked out looking chic with layered, blow-dried and straightened hair for $35. I have been to Mario's 4 times and seen a different stylist each time. I have yet to be disappointed. However, I have to say that I am a pretty low maintenance girl. I am not one to spend more than 5 minutes on my hair in the morning, so if you are looking for an exceptional haircut, I don't know if this is the right place. If you're looking for a great, inexpensive haircut, give it a try. read more

Mario's is nicer than super cuts and not snobby like Newbury Street salons. It's clean and bright, but not fancy (which for me is a good thing). I easily made an appointment 24 hours in advance. I'd never been before so I just said I'd take an appointment with whoever was available. I ended up with Alan, who is great. He talked enough, but not too much and gave me a decent haircut. If I were looking to completely change my hairstyle, I'd probably pay more and go somewhere else, but for a standard "cut off 3 inches all around" kind of cut- Mario's is perfectly acceptable. Very disappointing. My daughter went there and paid a bundle to come out looking the same. Still not sure what the hairdresser did. Color was dull and the cut was the same. Unfortunately my daughter was taken advantage of. Very disappointing. Called the owner who was not very helpful. Fortunately there are plenty of good salons to choose from. I'm kind of an impulsive person, and a couple months ago, on the day before my birthday, I realized I wanted a haircut so I would look particularly dapper on the day I would finally be able to sing Taylor Swift's 22 with authenticity. I live in Davis Square, and so I googled "haircuts in Davis Square" and Mario's came up. After reviewing it on Yelp, I gave them a call at 4 PM the day before my birthday and asked if they would be able to see me that day. The woman on the phone was very understanding and flexible, and said that one of the owner's, Peppi, actually had an opening that evening and offered it to me. I went immediately after work to the salon and got a haircut and highlights. Peppi is meticulous when it comes to cutting people's hair -- he did it with such precision and care, while also trying to maintain a conversation with me. Additionally, while I was paying at the front desk, the woman taking the payment offered me a 10% off card as a birthday present. I plan on going to Mario's for awhile, and getting my haircut with Peppi. I would highly encourage you to do the same. read more

I went to Mario's for the first time today for a haircut. It was the first cut I'd gotten in a year or two, and the shortest I'd had it cut in about seven years--a pretty dramatic change, but I had split ends and dead hair our the wazoo, and I was ready to take the leap. I have wavy/curly hair, and I've had pretty mixed results with hairdressers all my life, but I'm thrilled to say that the cut I got from Rosa is exactly what I was hoping for! (And this is even without any product in it--I asked her not to put any in, since I'm dying my hair tomorrow.) She looked at the pictures I'd brought for reference and confirmed that it would suit the shape of my face and be a nicely low-maintenance style. She was very fast--I didn't feel like she was rushing though the cut, but she was efficient and seemed to know exactly what she was doing, not to mention being very friendly and pleasant to talk to! My sister had come in with me to get a wax, and even though we were walk-ins on a Saturday afternoon, we were in and out in under an hour. The haircut was only $35, too (!)--extremely affordable for Boston. Rosa seems to be widely praised for her waxing skills (my sister, who's had Rosa for waxing sessions in other visits, agreed on that front, when I mentioned the Yelp reviews), but I'm very happy to say that she seems to be just as good with hair, even curly hair. I will definitely go back to Mario's for maintenance trims. read more

My usual attitude is that a haircut is a haircut, there's not too much more than that, and if it's bad, well it'll just grow out in a little bit and it will all be okay. I have seriously never gotten such a bad haircut in my life though, and this is from someone who isn't even picky. Zen was my stylist, and she did the fastest, most uneven cut I've ever seen in my life. I've been going to Mario's ever since I was 6 and decided that I didn't want to get cheap barber shop hair cuts with my two brothers anymore. My mom (who has been going to Marios since who knows when) took me in for an appointment to get my hair trimmed. I've gone ever since. I really enjoy going there--everyone is practically family and whenever my mom goes in by herself they always say, "where is your daughter?" They do a great job cutting my hair and the shampoo is pretty much an awesome head massage. I know that some people don't think that the stylists talk much, but they do once you get to know them. I have really long hair and I always let the stylists have fun curling it and adding little flips and twists after they have finished cutting my hair. I normally get a trim, but sometimes when I mix it up they always have great suggestions. I have always been nervous about cutting my hair because it grows so slowly, so I often have them do an "abbreviated" version of the haircut (they will pin it up to see how it would look cut, they cut a shallower angle instead of a really deep angle) so that I can see before they do anything I don't want done. Marios has a fun, friendly environment and is great for kids (I would know!) and is also good if you want to get your hair done for a special event. For my Bat Mitzvah, I wanted a fairly simple updo that would stay in place so that I could dance and have fun without worrying it would fall out. I told them this, and they got to work. They twisted and pinned back all my hair into an elegant style and it held! They were done in about 10 minutes and it was really fun, everyone was asking about my dress and the decorations that I had for the party. Overall, Mario's is just an amazing place if you want a local, friendly salon. I have been a regular there for forever and I don't have a single complaint! read more
