Just returned from another amazing pastrami sandwich on seeded wheat! I have always loved going to Mariposa because it's a neighborhood bakery. My first visit years ago has kept me coming back! Fresh ingredients, friendly staff, eco friendly cups make it a nice place to sit and eat. It often gets busy so if you are looking for a fast food experience this is not it! Been in several times, the sandwiches being my personal fave. A bit on the expensive side but honestly these are THE fattest sandwiches I've seen anywhere. 'Skimp' is not in the vocabulary. Fresh, moist sliced meats, fresh greens, tomatoes, avocado and lettuce, bread baked right there that is very, I mean, VERY good! (Try the seeded multigrain-Heaven!) And the best root beer I've ever drank. If you're not as hungry as I am when I go in there, the other half of your sandwich may feed you for supper as well as lunch! I want to love this place. Every time I sacrifice my time in going to this place, I die a little inside. Service is horrendously slow. This coffee shop may or may not have been taken over by zombies. Maybe if you are a hipster with a trust fund, you don't mind waiting, but I personally need to get to work on time. The sizes of the drinks do not match the prices. I feel like a giant holding my medium iced mocha and I am 5 feet nothing. Rude. Then I hear the food is so good though... so I was excited to try a breakfast sandwich. After waiting for two days to get my sandwich (15 minutes..), I was annoyed to find that the bread was burnt and stale. I had already left to get to work (late because of the wait) so I couldn't send it back. I am not a morning person and with all these issues, you can imagine the temper tantrum I wanted to throw. Mariposa is a great place to pop into if you need a quick bite...they have tasty baked goods, sandwiches, and a fairly wide variety of hot & cold drinks. The atmosphere leaves a little to be desired...but I'm not super picky about where I dig into my sandwich, so I'm more than happy to hang out at a table by a window overlooking Mass Ave and see whats going on outside. Sure, the staff is a little out there...but frankly, I think thats what gives this place character...and when my banana honey peanut butter sandwich is ready, it better be something you shout about so it's all good when they holler my name. read more

I love this place, it's one of the best bakeries around Central. Their pretzel bagel and pretzel roll is amazing. I also love the moist chocolate cake with sour cream. Sandwiches are also delicious but this place mainly exists for its baked goods for me. read more

My first impression whenever I get to the counter at Mariposa is how friendly the staff is. Maybe I'm just lucky, but honestly every time I've been in there, this is the case. The baked goods are unique and delicious, and there is always a lower fat/healthier selection. They also have great breakfast sandwiches, which for some reason are hard to come by in a lot of cafés in the Boston area. Sandwiches are about $7 on average, but they are generous in portion and quite tasty. The menu is quite extensive for a café, with hot cereals in the morning and soup/stew options in addition to their sandwiches at lunch. Lastly, the atmosphere is great. High ceilings in an old building, skylight over the bakery in back lends pleasant natural light to the space, rain or shine. They also do custom bakery orders and catering! Definitely recommend visiting Mariposa when you are in Central Square. read more

I like coming in here when I'm in Central Sq. It's cozier and less crowded then 1369. But expensive! worth trying the tiny double chocolate cookies. I love the meatball sandwich too. The service is very slow. I do love the atmosphere and the fact that not everyone is on the computer. This place is worth trying if you are in the area and can spend some cash. read more

I stopped into Mariposa today after a meeting near Central Square. I wanted to pick up a vegan muffin for me (damned vegan cleanse.....so badly wanted a foie gras muffin...) and a donut for my wife. I arrived to the bakery and was the second person in line...the person in front of me was in an in-depth discussion of his pending vacation with the woman behind the counter, so I waited. And I waited....and I waited. After (literally) FIVE MINUTES when no one on the staff was even acknowledging me and I was about to turn and leave, "Pending Vacation Guy" stepped away from the counter. So did the woman he was speaking to behind the counter. I looked around and muttered, apparently louder than I thought, "SERIOUSLY???". The only person who apologized for the wait was Pending Vacation Guy. One of the staff, who was making a coffee, and who saw me when I came in but never acknowledged me (way, way back....when I first came in..during what felt like the previous day), looked up just long enough to say "I'll be with you in a minute." He took my order, didn't apologize for the wait, looked annoyed that I didn't give him a tip (for the $2 donuts...and the mortgage-payment-priced muffin) and gave me my baked goods. The muffin was okay, bordering on "pretty good", and my wife said the donut was the same. So, I'll be generous and give the food three stars. I'll be equally generous and give the overall experience two stars. The service....well, that was just godawful. I took a look at some of the other reviews and I agree with many of those I read; decent enough food, shockingly bad "service". I'd recommend avoiding this place until/unless they get their act together. There are too many decent independent coffeehouses in Cambridge to spend your money here if they don't. read more

I've been here a few times and I always seem to end up disappointed like other people have mentioned the service is not so good. they are soooooo slow. I ordered a smoked salmon bagel and it took just over 12 mins to get it (seriously). Also I don't know if their bagels come burnt or they do it. but everytime I"ve had one it is so crunchy its not even funny. its pretty much like eating a bagel cover in pretzels. not so good doubt I will be back. read more

I'm a solid 2.5 stars on this place. The food was pretty good (grilled chicken with a chipotle aioli on thick slabs of honey oat bread that was toasty perfection), but the service, like others have described was slow at best. The guy forgot my drink altogether and people after me were getting their sandwiches before me. The seating isn't terribly comfortable, but I might MIGHT just venture back for take out on a sunny day. read more

I was looking for another cafe and ended up here. It was actually a wonderful surprise. While the food was a bit pricey, the quality reflected it. The latte was solid, and their breakfast sandwiches are top notch. The service was mediocre, and there isn't really a consistent vibe, but if you're in central and looking for a place to hunker down and work or just stop in before your day begins, I highly recommend Mapriosa. read more

I was in Central and felt like a sandwich, so I tried this place. I got the home made veggieburger and it was very good. The bread was on thick slices and the veggies were fresh. You could see the black beans in the veggie burger. It was a little pricey for a sandwich at $9, but it was still a good sandwich. read more

Nice staff, decent food, large windows to people watch from. I recommend the pretzel roll & oatmeal with the works. Always a changing and fun array of pastries. Love the atmosphere but I eat pretty healthy and scones and stuff just need like 10x more berries. As they are, it's just dryness. Granted I've worked in a cafe before so I'm picky but coughing up bucks for an indulgence should be for something good!...not something you regret afterwards. That being said, I often get there in the evening or afternoon and not in the morning when the fresh stuff usually comes out but, still. Step it up and add more berries! I'd love to come back! It's such a nice little place and the sterile modernity of Flour makes me sick. read more

Despite reading a bunch of mediocre reviews, I had high hopes that somehow my experience would be different. Unfortunately, today's afternoon jaunt left me feeling unimpressed and siding with the masses. I ordered the Veggie Burger on a Pretzel Roll, and a soy latte. Agreed, the pretzel roll is a gift from heaven. The only other place I've experienced such tastiness is at the Portsmouth Brewery, where they serve their soups and salads with a delicious pretzel dinner roll. However, the veggie burger was a different story entirely. Considering one would think that their might be actual be "veggies" in a "veggie burger," but no. There were no veggies. Just beans. Black beans. And that's it. The accompanying tomato and lettuce were, thankfully, fresh. But the aioli was bland and tasteless. If it weren't for the sea salt on the pretzel roll, the whole sandwich would've been a big blob of blah in my mouth. The soy latte was solid, but made with entirely too much foam (like 1/4 of the cup), and it made me wonder if the barista didn't know the difference between a latte and a cappuccino. *shrug* On the bright side, I didn't experience any issues with their service. They were plenty busy, and the woman behind the counter seemed stressed, but understandably so. It didn't deter her from doing her job or providing me with adequate service. I did, however, notice one of the guys on the line attempting to pick up a slice of pie with his hands and a napkin as it crumbled and fell to pieces on the counter. Um, ever heard of utensils? Or even better, a pie server? Works like magic. Promise. I can't say I'm jumping out of my britches to give Mariposa a second try. Thanks LivingSocial for cutting my expenses in half. Servers are reallllyyyy lethargic, even if there is a HUGE line but the lemon-blueberry scones are AMAZING. I'd give their coffee a 6.5 out of ten. it is much much better than Cafe Luna across the street but not nearly as good as 1369. If you're too lazy to walk to 1369 down the street, I'd come here. Plus they take credit cards. read more

Finally stopped here for coffee and a blueberry streusel muffin after living nearby for several months. Prices were reasonable, the coffee was very good, and the muffin was great -- much less sugar than most muffins. I see others complaining about their service speed. There was only one person in front of me and I had a simple order so I was served somewhat quickly, but I could see three people working in the back preparing food. They seemed in no particular hurry to do anything productive and I could see several people waiting for their food. Didn't impact me, but I can understand the prior complaints. read more

Good little place, my oatmeal breakfast was excellent as was this "London Fog" drink. The people working here seemed friendly too. I see a lot of people complaining about speed of service and wifi and stuff but I guess we all come to cafes for different reasons. Generally I find that there is an indirect relationship between food quality and speed and I could care less about wifi and traffic flow and things like that. I like character in my cafes, and the character here is pretty generic for an indie cafe. read more
