After visiting quite a few Neiman Marcus Mariposa restaurants, I am sorry to say that I had a very bad start to our meal at the Ala Moana Mariposa recently. I had booked a week before on opentable.com a 5:45pm reservation because I had been told it has the best sunset view in Honolulu. I happened to be there a couple of days before having a bite of dinner and dessert on my own at the bar. As I was leaving, I reconfirmed the reservation. The very nice assistant manager noted that I had requested "a window seat" on the opentable reservation and did I want to change that to a lanai seat for the outdoors...all the better to see the sunset. The hostess who was standing there also, was uninvolved, unresponsive and openly dismissive. My husband and I arrived for our reservation and were seated by the same still catatonic hostess I had seen two nights before at a table on the lanai but not on the front row. I was upset but sat and reviewed the menu. My husband, seeing that I was disappointed AND that there were not one, not two but three tables at the front of the lanai, went to the desk to request to being moved. In fact, two male Japanese tourists arrived after us and were seated at one of the front tables. Really??! My husband went back to the still catatonic hostess (who asked who he was having just sat him 30 seconds before!) and he asked to be moved to one of the open front tables. Not available she insisted. My husband asked to see the manager. It took the general manager quite a while to come out from the back and was equally unconcerned and dismissive to our request to be moved to an open front table. At this point, the spirit of the dinner had been obliterated not to mention missing the sunset. I was ready to leave. The manager avoided him for another 10 minutes or so before, very reluctantly and slamming dishes around, seated us at one of the empty tables in front. Our server, Janine, was a godsend and worked hard but discreetly to change our experience. A true professional. She gave us monkey bread to take home and rushed out to give us our credit card that had been left out of the final bill folder. We have both been in the service hospitality industry our entire lives, and we understand that things do happen. BUT it is the way those challenges and disappointed expectations are handled. Golden rule: treat others as you would want to be treated. Have some empathy. No golden rule empathy was to be seen that night. After having been served an excellent meal as usual and signing our $260 check we tried to take the high road. We said thank you and good night as we were leaving to both the manager and the hostess. Neither acknowledged us nor did either raise their head from staring at dishes and the computer. Mariposa management/front desk gets a big F-. Service and food an A+. Even with Janine's warm hospitality, we will not be returning to the Ala Moana Mariposa. Janine is the only reason we did not give this review only one star. We will in no way recommend the Ala Moana Mariposa to our friends that are heading to Honolulu in the future. By the way: the remaining front lanai table was NEVER seated. Insult to injury?! My fiancé and I had lunch on Sunday, 8/23/15. We have been to Mariposa's a few times in the past but this is the first review I am writing for this establishment. We arrived and were greeted immediately but chose to take a seat at the bar due to our time constraints. As always, the staff was very friendly and the place was very clean without any noticeable issues that would have given us cause for concern. For lunch, I had the lobster club sandwich with fries and a glass of pinot grigio. My fiancé had the smoked salmon salad. The lobster was well prepared, moist and perfectly cooked and chilled to the right temperature. The avocado in the sandwich added a nice balance of creaminess to the dish and the roasted red peppers gave it that little extra flavor that rounded out the entire meal. The fries were cooked to just the right crispness that I love and were not overly seasoned as to take anything away from the sandwich. My fiancé's salmon was prepared medium and also very moist and tender. The greens in the salad were not noticeably wilted and had that nice crunch that gave the dish its overall textural balance along with the spiced pecans. The dressing was a vinaigrette adding the citrus flavor you want in a dish that has fish. The goat cheese brought the salad together rounding out the many flavors the dish has to offer. Both meals were exceptional! The meal was delicious and we would have given 5 stars but their signature popovers were overcooked and the bartender forgot our chicken broth/consommé until we asked about it and we received it well after we were already into our lunch. Both of these items are part of the Mariposa experience and we were slightly taken back due to the lackluster effort in this area. read more

Ok how many times have I given another chance to this place? This is supposedly be the high quality establishment! Spoken to the manager before but nothing has changed. I don't want to waste any more effort so here's my review: Pros: the popovers are why I come. Cons: 1. But they forgot to bring the consommé and I had to ASK for the popover. It wasn't busy and all the waiters were standing around or cleaning tables. I know they wouldn't have brought unless I asked. It came the same time as my food. I'm tired of teaching them how to do their job!!! 2. The French dip -roast beef sandwich didn't even have real au jus sauce!! It used to be but not they changed it to French onion dipping sauce. I mean who does that??? It's gotten so cheap here! And just two slices of beef and lots of greens. That is not how a French dip sandwich that cost $20 is supposedly to be made!! 3. The sweet potato Fries were super hard, dried and old. It probably had been sitting out for hours and they couldn't bother to give me fresh ones. I mean even McDonald's can make fresh French fries for their customers! This Place is SOOO embarrassing!! 4. Of course bad service. I don't expect good service here anymore. I just eat my food and try to stay grateful for the nice view. That's it. I'm never coming back again. I can find my popovers elsewhere. Even if I have to make them myself. In fact I should have gone to Lanis Cafe. Never coming back here. read more

Mariposa used to be a great place to eat. I just went with my family and the whole experience was poor. From the hostess to the servers, there's much to be desired. I was seated and my husband had to stop me from getting wet from something left on the seat. The hostess seating us just looked at it and said something I could not hear. Then she returned with a napkin and wiped the seat. We sat down and waited a long time to even get water. The napkins smelled so bad that my husband and son asked for new napkins. They received new napkins but the rest of our party was left with the smelly napkins. We ended up not using them and just placing them on the side. Then I noticed my fork was dirty. Again we had to signal the waiter to ask him for a clean fork. At that point I was ready to walk out but decided against it because my family was hungry and because it was my birthday. The food was just OK and I agree with other reviewers that it is overpriced considering the quality of the service and food. The popovers were good but that was the only thing that was good about our experience there. I saw another table with a birthday dessert/ lit candle. At no time was I offered a birthday dessert or menu to look at the desserts. The hostess and servers knew it was my birthday since my family told them and since I was wearing a birthday Lei. Although this place is highly popular and has good food, the service here that we experienced were below expectations and dissapointimg. First off the waiter that was on charge of table was not friendly and made negative expressions when we told him that we wanted to share our main order instead of each getting one dish , he made a comment that was obviously meant to make us feel bad for not ordering more, I assume he was dissatisfied as leas order of food would mean a lower tip for him...furthermore we called the manager to get our waiter changed. The manager did not even apologize but simply said oh okay so I will change your waiter, then as the waiter approached with our drinks she told him right in front of us that he was no longer in charge of our table, making the air uncomfortable both for him and us. She should've told him in private not while he was serving us. Both the waiter that we had and the store manager handled the situation poorly. Although not all the waiters are as bad or unfriendly, the service is still something that should be improved. read more

I recently visited Mariposa for a client meeting, and I have to say, it's one of the best places to hold a professional gathering. The servers were incredibly attentive, refilling our waters every 15-20 minutes, which I really appreciated. One of the highlights was the complimentary bread--it was delicious, and they offered refills, which was a nice touch. I ordered the scallops, and they were simply outstanding! The dish came with mashed potatoes topped with their signature soup/sauce. The flavors were perfectly balanced, not too rich, which is just how I like it. I'm not usually a fan of mashed potatoes, but these were exceptional! We chose to sit outside on the balcony, which offers stunning views of the ocean. It was a bit hot, but the breeze made it comfortable. The setting was just wonderful, making the whole experience even more enjoyable. Overall, I had a fantastic time and would definitely come back again. Highly recommended for both business and leisure dining! read more

Over-rated! View is nice, but if you're going for great food, there are many other places that are less expensive and much, much better. The chef here should really take time to review his menu selections and concentrate on improving the dishes served here. Way over-priced and each time I went there, I felt cheated.....like I didn't feel I got my money's worth. After eating here one day and spending about $70.00 (for just entrees for 2 and an iced tea, we went to eat steak and garlic shrimp at Blue Water Shrimp at the Ala Moana Shopping Center food court. For $30.00 ($14.95 ea), it was 1,000% better than Mariposa's food! If you don't care about eating a great dish and spending a lot of money - then Mariposa is for you. I want to eat food that is worth the price and there are so many places much better for me! read more

Mariposa is my favorite go-to for lunch. I come here often, especially with the girls! I've had good service here so far and no complaints yet. My boyfriend loves their complimentary bread especially the butter it comes with. Super ono! I tried a lot of their main entrees and so far my favorite one is the Laksa Seafood Curry and the Lobster Club Sandwhich. Today, I tried something new which was the pork chop and it was crazy delicious! Probably not the best I've tasted but still worthy enough for me to order this again the next time I go! It does sometimes get warm here so I wouldn't recommend the other door seating on days where we get a lot of vog, otherwise the view is nice. I'm always okay with sitting inside, too! Oh! And don't forget to try their Plantation Iced Tea!! It's my favorite and I ALWAYS order it! read more

We had an incredible dining experience at Mariposa, located inside Neiman Marcus. From the moment we were seated, our waiter, Scott, went above and beyond to ensure we had a wonderful time, especially given that we were dining with our 2-year-old daughter. Scott was patient, attentive, and made sure our little one was well taken care of. The food was absolutely fantastic! My wife ordered the Wagyu burger, which she loved, our daughter enjoyed her spaghetti, and I had the ribeye steak, which was cooked to perfection. The flavors were spot on, and every bite was delicious. And we can't forget to mention the complimentary popover--wow! It was fluffy, warm, and a perfect start to our meal. Overall, the ambiance, food, and service were top-notch. We'll definitely be coming back to Mariposa soon! read more

I recently had a delightful dining experience at Mariposa in the Ala Moana Center. Although I didn't have a reservation and waited about 45 minutes, it was absolutely worth it--especially to be seated with a stunning ocean view. I ordered the crab pasta, which was incredibly flavorful. While the portion was a bit small, that only made me wish there was more--it was that good! A special shoutout to my server, Hunter, who was attentive, knowledgeable, and genuinely kind. His excellent service truly elevated the entire experience. If you're looking for a place with gorgeous views, delicious food, and outstanding service, Mariposa is a must-visit. I'll definitely be coming back! read more

This restaurant is one of my go-to's for brunch/lunch! I love their complimentary bread with their tasty strawberry or is it guava spread? My favorite dish so far is the Seafood Laksa Curry which is definitely not heavy but portioned at the right amount to keep you full. I also love their lobster club sandwich with the a side of either regular or sweet potato fries. They're overpriced but I mean come on, it's located in Neiman Marcus so of course that's expected! read more

So my friend and me had lunch here after a morning of "sight seeing". She said it's a fav or hers. Got table pretty quick, the waiter was attentive and friendly. This isn't normally the type of place I frequent (in Nieman Marcus, wow) but I gotta say that the food was pretty good and nobody was snotty, ha! This place is a culinary nightmare. The dishes are horrible tasting and everyone in my party were disappointed. The service was not good either b/c they didn't put in an order for one of the dishes, so when we all got our food, we had to wait another 30 min for last person to get there dish. The service is great here, but sometimes you might find a caterpillar in your salad like I did. I ordered the Cesar salad and discovered a fury green caterpillar moving around in it. We were grossed out. The food is pretty good and they have a wide variety of food including cheeseburgers and fries. The view is great. I love the view from this restaurant over looking Ala Moana Beach Park. The atmosphere is relaxing as the big palm ceiling fans bring the trade winds in. The food is fabulous and the wait staff attentive. I especially enjoy the King Crab Salad served with the puff-puff bread along with a glass of Champagne. Great service, great food and a pretty darn good view! Had lunch here yesterday and had the lobster club....dang, that sandwich is good! There is a slight smokey flavor to it along with large pieces of lobster, not the crab salad type, but actual lobster pieces! So cool! We love the restaurant especially for me sit outside on the lanai. The view is amazing the atmosphere is great and most of the time the service is spot on. The food is always delicious but I have to tell you we go there specifically at lunch time for the pop over bread you get served complementary before your meal. Love the service here and love the food and more so the deserts. Food is light but filling and can be a bit steep its not for your every day lunch dinner kinda place. There famous puff and cream cheese they offer is also great! Good stop in if your shopping in the mall and looking for abit more upscale place to eat at. Didn't know that they closed but glad they've reopened! The atmosphere is my favorite thing about this place - feels big and spacious and the view is very nice as well. The service is always good and I've never had a bad meal here. Looking forward to coming back again for brunch with friends :) read more
