Pozole taco! Yes I said it. I have never had one before, is it a thing? Regardless, it was fantastic! The perfect bite. It had pork, hominy, cabbage, radish and it was encompassed in a slightly crunchy shell. Soooo tasty. It was the star of the show. I also got a taco de Cameron, grilled flavorful shrimp with red cabbage and creamy chipotle sauce. I also got a side of rice and beans, the beans tasted homemade. Yum. My husband got the birria queso taco plate which he enjoyed throughly. We asked for chips and salsa, their house salsa was red and had a smokiness to it. We also tried their habanero salsa which had a kick to it while being flavor. Both A+ Melody was our server was SUPER attentive, she remembered to bring out what we asked for ( salsa habanero, salt, lime etc.). She went above and beyond. She was pleasant, accommodating and anticipated what we may have wanted before we asked. The place is decorated beautifully with murals of butterflies of course. They have lots of seating space and a full length bar stocked . Apparently they have Mariachis and a brunch buffet in sundays and a live dj on Friday and Saturday nights. Unfortunately, this was a very disappointing experience!!!!!! The meat was chewy and burned, the rice was extremely oversalted, and the drinks barely tasted like they contained any alcohol. The tortillas were hard, and the food did not taste fresh at all it seemed like it had been prepared earlier and reheated or saved. To make matters worse, the waiter did not make any effort to accommodate us or address our concerns. The decor and atmosphere were nice, but the food were not worth the price. We paid $120 for two meals and two drinks, and it was definitely not worth it. I would not recommend eating here!!!! My first time here and I rate Mariposas 3/5. The reason for this review because I feel the food was adequate. I ordered the guacamole for appetizer and ceasar salad with asada. The guac was my fav out of my food and the salad was good but the asada was quite tough. For my drink I had red wine Pinot noir. They did not have alot of wine selections only two which I felt they could have had more. The wine was good though, and they gave me a very good portion. The service was really good tho. The server we had was very professional and easy going. The ambiance was a bit too party scene and loud for me, but it's good to come to watch games and they have karaoke. The place decor is very bright and modern so that was a plus. They also have happy hour Mon-Fri and brunch on Sundays with bottomless mimosas. They have slushie margaritas that my sister said was good and many signature cocktails. I don't know if I'll come back, but it's definitely a place to have a good Time and turn up. Review for bar area only. Stopped in mid-week, about 8:00 PM, to continue my mom's birthday celebration with some after-dinner cocktails. There's plenty of parking in the shopping center's lot, but the handicap ramp to the front door was quite long. We were seated immediately on a bar top table adjacent to the bar. It was a loud, party-like atmosphere, but maybe only 20 patrons in total. Service was very good, the drink order came out quickly, and everything was tasty. The ladies in our group had three slushies: a Chamoyada, a Tamarindo, and a Chika Fresa ($14.95/ea.). I had an Ancestral Old Fashioned ($15.99) and was one of the better ones I've had, especially at that price. We didn't have any food on this visit, but I'd return to give their kitchen a try and see how they measure up, food wise. read more

On Cinco de Mayo 2026, I had a dinner meet up with one of my wonderful fellow Yelper at Mariposas & Cantina in Covina. It was her recommendation to come here for Taco Tuesday. Thank you my friend! Initially, we thought we would get the Taco Tuesday special, but since it was a holiday, they didn't have the taco special. This place used to be Kalaveras, but has been rebranded to Mariposas. It's a huge standalone colorful restauratnt inside and out. Menu had good selections. We ordered the Molcajete and a couple drinks. I got the House Slushie virgin style that had a very nice flavor... love the combination of homemade syrup and lime juice. I don't remember what my friend got. While we were waiting for our order, we got complimentary chips and salsa. It was so good. I had to order $10 worth of salsa to-go. As for the Molajete, it was my first time trying it. This was an intriguing and interesting dish. It came with different sizzling proteins such as steak, pork, shrimp, cactus, cheese, etc with stir-fried veggies served in a stone bowl called molcajete. Rice and beans plus 3 tortillas either corn or flour came with it. We had to ask for extra tortillas since there were two of us. This dish was deliciously tasty and filling. I love the well flavored proteins and sweet veggies. I didn't think I would get so full, but I did. Price was about $40+ because it serves at least 2 people. Definitely something that can be shared. It was worth it. Our server was a really nice young lady who was attending to several tables. She did the best she could. Kudos to her. Thank you Miss for the attention and care. This was my first time trying this restaurant, which is very nice and cute inside. They have a lot of nice TVs and they play good music and karaoke. The menu was kind of confusing, so it was hard to determine what picture went with what also, the menu is very limited they don't have a lot of things on the menu however, the drinks are very good. The food was good but nothing to rush to, but I'll probably go back for happy hour for some drinks or something like that, or watch a game great place for family, friends, and coworkers, easy parking. They have a lot of parking and the restaurant is located in an area that is near people's homes. Our waitress was very attentive and very nice. Guacamole was very very good and also the beans they were delicious. I didn't care too much for their avocado sauce on top of the enchiladas doing that great, but it was decent. read more

Was in the area and had been meaning to try this place for a while, so the Hubs and I ventured over to Mariposa. This place is located on the corner of Grand and Arrow Hwy. The building is brightly painted, which makes it stand out and beckons you to come in. Upon arrival, the restaurant was empty. There was no one at the counter, so we waited. Inside, the colors are vibrant, and Latin music wafted from the speakers. After about 5 minutes a young girl showed up and led us to our seats. The table we were given was somewhat wobbly, so we just scooted over to the next one. I immediately ordered a coffee as it was 10 in the morning and i had just come from a fasting medical appointment and was severely caffeine deprived. When the coffee arrived, it was nice and strong, but lukewarm. I only drank about half of it. Mariposa has a brunch menu for weekdays 10-2. I ordered the Enchiladas Verdes and the Hubs got the Burrito Mojado. Both were chicken. When the food arrived, I was a little disappointed. because the enchiladas looked a little dry. However, looks can be deceiving. They were actually quite moist and quite delicious. The chicken was flavorful and tender, and the sauce that covered the enchiladas was excellent. I realized later that the reason the enchiladas looked dry was because they were not smothered all over with cheese and sauce, which is how I am accustomed to seeing them. However, in this case less was more. The accompanying beans and rice, however, left much to be desired. I took one bite of each of the bland items and immediately pushed this dish aside. However, my husband, who has a much more forgiving palette, took them home to eat later. When I asked him about his burrito, which looked humongous, he stated it was delicious. Overall, the food was good; not really authentic but if you are looking for Americanized Mexican food that's not too spicy, this place will probably appeal to you. I would say its the Olive Garden of Mexican food. I'd probably return just because their drink menu looks good and I'd like to try it soon. read more

Stopped in at this restaurant for Taco Tuesday at around 3:30pm last Tuesday. It was pretty empty but we wanted some tacos & wanted to enjoy happy hour. The person who took our order was not friendly at all. She only spoke spanish, and my spanish isn't great but I was able to get by with what I wanted to order. We ordered our tacos and drinks , even though it was empty she took a while to bring everything out. The taco meat was so dry and tasted as it had been old and reheated. I didn't understand if it was Taco Tuesday and only 3:30pm how the meat wouldn't be fresh. Super disappointing. We ate them anyway because we were hungry. The margaritas were really good & the special on the 1/2 yard was good. The whole time we were there the lady who took our order never asked if we needed anything. I went to mariposas for Father's Day and had a really nice time overall. The restaurant is decorated really beautifully with colorful butterfly accents, which makes it feel warm and welcoming. Parking was also easy and convenient, which was a big plus. The menu isn't very big, but everything we ordered tasted great. The food was flavorful, the portions were generous, and the prices were very fair. The drinks were also well made, and our waitress was friendly. There was even a mariachi band playing for Father's Day, which made the whole experience feel fun and festive. The only issue was the restroom. The trash cans were full and there were no paper towels, and even after we let the staff know, it wasn't taken care of while we were there. Even with that, I would still recommend Mariposas. The good food, great drinks, big portions, and affordable prices make it worth going. If they improve the restroom situation, it would easily be a 5-star place for me. I visited this restaurant for the first time yesterday afternoon,and while I really enjoyed the food, the service made the overall experience very disappointing. It was not busy at all, and for the most part, the employees were standing around talking to each other. Our appetizer took over 20 minutes to arrive, and less than five minutes later, our food was brought out. We weren't offered anything else or asked if we needed anything. As soon as our waitress put the food on the table, she walked away. We were never checked on during the entire meal. We had to ask another employee for drink refills while our waitress was standing at the bar looking at her phone. Once we finished eating, we had to go find someone and ask for our bill so we could pay and leave. This was especially disappointing because the restaurant was not busy, so there really seemed to be no reason for the lack of attention or service. The food was good, but unfortunately, good food can't make up for such poor service. After scribing a two or three prior reviews about their in-house service/ambiance and food, today's review pertains solely with their CATERING. We hired Mariposas to prepare 45 of their mouth watering Quesabirrias Tacos for our holiday party on the 20th. Assistant Manager MAYRA was superlative throughout the two-wk process! Though they can typically handle most catering requests within a 3-day window, we'd placed our order with a fortnight's notice...just to be extra careful. Manager JESSE was businesslike and efficient in my two brief interactions with him, but Mayra was awesome throughout. Fielding multiple phone calls as we played "telephone ping pong" w/ the manager to helping us load our car w/ the multiple 18" X 26" roasting pans and various quarts of minced onions y cilantro and unctuous beefy consomme that comprised our bounty, Mayra was truly the "MVP" of this order! And the million-dollar question- What did our guests think?! Last Friday 7/31 decided to give this place a try for some happy hour drinks. Walked in place was not busy full seating at bar was available so we decided to sit at the bar. I guess that was our first mistake because the bartender didnt seem happy to see us taking our seats. She didnt greet us not even as much as a smile which made us feel very unwelcomed. Every interaction with this bartender was as if we were a nuisance rather than a paying customer. I saw her reaction to another person when they approached her to place their drink order and it was equally just as foul. This woman clearly isnt happy doing this job. I will gladly drive to Pasadena and get the same drink with better flavor friendlier service and all around better experience. We discovered this restaurant on Instagram, and it looked like a great place to celebrate our daughter's birthday, so we decided to give it a try. Unfortunately, after reading some of the recent reviews, I have to agree with the concerns regarding customer service. We arrived around 10:30 a.m. and waited at the hostess stand to check in for our reservation. It took quite some time before anyone acknowledged us. Eventually, a waitress approached and quickly asked how she could help, but she began walking away while I was still explaining that we had a reservation. Throughout our visit, there were several small issues that reflected a lack of customer service. The staff often seemed rushed when the restaurant wasn't busy, and when our waitress was unavailable, other employees appeared confused when we asked for something as simple as water or another drink. The most concerning issue occurred when my friend's meal contained a piece of wire that appeared to have come from a metal scrubber. We immediately brought it to our waitress's attention. We understand that mistakes happen, but we expected a manager to come to our table, apologize, and address the situation personally. Simply removing the item from the bill did not feel like an adequate response. To be fair, the food itself was very good, which makes the experience even more disappointing. However, great food alone does not make up for poor service and a lack of attention to a serious food safety concern. Lastly, just because gratuity is automatically included for larger parties does not mean customer service should suffer. This spot had to have the worst chilaquiles I have ever had in my life. Chilaquiles aren't hard to screw up for me, because I'm not that picky. I know people have preferences , but idc I'll eat them crunchy , soggy, hot or mild. I'm usually always ok with however people make them. When I say that these had a SLIMY consistency and weird sweet flavor to it, I was absolutely disgusted. I thought maybe it was one chip or two, so kept trying. I think I had 4 chips and almost threw up in my mouth by then. I've never had a tortilla have that texture and the salsa was the worst salsa I've had in my life (not exaggerating) . The service was amazing as soon as my date and I came up the staff was friendly and ready to take our order. The food was amazing I went for happy hour. My date wanted a classic margarita and I ordered the pepino slushee! So delicious, my date stated the margarita was missing something. The food we ordered was the loaded carne asada fries and the flavors weee delicious and I enjoyed the fact that the fries were Cajun. Mariposas (Covina) offered largely portioned, delicious food. Its staff is knowledgeable and welcoming. And its ambiance is enchanting. Beautiful murals aside, I sat below a glass blue ceiling surrounded with greenery and adorable butterfly art. Mariposas (Covina) was packed with happy, chatting customers. I ordered the "Pasta A La Diabla" ($20.49). The dish is humongous! This pasta is covered in creamy chipotle sauce, crumbly cotija cheese, chili flakes, and plump shrimp. This cheesy, creamy pasta is not too spicy; rather, its heat resembles the peppers you'd shake onto a pizza slice. It's delicious!! In addition, I arrived during Taco Tuesday, so I selected two Asada/Beef Tacos ($1.99 each). I enjoyed its fresh flavor and quality, clean ingredients. Its tiny soft tortilla also tasted very fresh. The overall portion is rather small; however, it's a good deal for the low Taco Tuesday price. (Quick Note: Without Taco Tuesday, tacos cost $4.95. And importantly, Taco Tuesday does not include all the tacos. Taco Tuesday includes: Asada/Beef Taco, Pollo/Chicken Taco, Barbacoa/Braised Beef Taco, Chicharron Taco, and Carnitas/Pork Taco.) I arrived at Mariposas (Covina) on Tuesday (around 6:55PM). As mentioned, the place is shockingly busy. The parking lot is also humongous, so there's plenty of easy parking. I approached the counter, and staff kindly wrote my name. Then, I sat in the waiting area. For a "Table for One," I waited 12 minutes and 16 seconds before being seated. The entire process felt very professional and comfortable. I enjoyed the plush, comfy seats in the waiting area. Also, the location felt very well-ventilated and airy despite it being extremely crowded and bustling. I sat at a very clean, shiny table. And I was served by a very knowledgeable, charming, and helpful staff member (Gianina). Gianina took my order and helped explained the menu. I noticed that soda or iced tea wasn't listed on the menu, and Gianina quickly explained that soda & iced tea cost $4 with unlimited refills. Gianina thoroughly and enthusiastically answered any questions. I ordered the "Pasta A La Diabla" ($20.49), two Asada/Beef Tacos ($1.99 each on Taco Tuesday), and a Razzberry Iced Tea ($4). All the food arrived in eight minutes and 15 seconds. Very fast! Strangely enough, the drink arrived much later than the entrees. The Razzberry Iced Tea arrived in 14 minutes and 14 seconds. As mentioned prior, the meal tasted delicious. The tacos had good ingredients. The pasta was tasty and huge. The pasta's garlic bread is also tasty! And the Razzberry Iced Tea is refreshing. I happily enjoyed several free refills of the beverage, and I appreciated how Gianina offered to send me a to-go cup with another refill. It was also very simple to wave Gianina down and get additional assistance. It's absolutely wonderful how Mariposas (Covina) has such amazing, helpful staff. Ambiance is festive and upbeat. The music is not overwhelming; rather, the bouncy beat just meshes well with the lovely environment. There are even televisions showing the soccer game with captions in Espanol. The vibe felt very fun while still maintaining a cozy family friendly atmosphere. If I were to nitpick my experience, I'd say that the food's plating was a little messy. I had to grab a napkin to clean the plate's edges. Also, the plump shrimp in my pasta tasted like they were boiled for a little too long. The shrimps lacked any seasonings or taste which felt strange in such a flavorful pasta. Also, Mariposas' floors can sometimes get splotchy quickly from tiny bits of spilled liquids. Despite all that, Mariposas (Covina) does so many things right! It truly feels like Mariposas (Covina) flows seamlessly. Management deserves a huge round of applause! Although I enjoyed the old Kalaveras, Mariposas (Covina) is leaps ahead in offering a stellar dining experience. To my utter delight, I had a near perfect experience. Took my mother for dinner to try their Pozole tacos on a Monday evening. The atmosphere was a bit quiet and only 2 other tables were occupied. We were sat right away and our order was taken almost immediately. I asked if they served chips and salsa and the server said only upon request.. so make sure you request your chips and salsa for the table, it does not come automatically. We came by here on a Friday for family dinner and had a good time! This used to be Kalaveras, but apparently Mariposas is a rebrand of the Kalaveras brand per our server. The interior and decor is pretty much similar with some modifications. The menu is compressed and had plenty of options from and kids menu items. We were a big party and sat on the right of the restaurant. One downside and difficulty we had was the tiny font on the pricing on the menu, but not a big deal. Everyone in our party ordered a variety of different entrees and everyone pretty happy with their food. The servers were kind and helpful the entire time. The restaurant has a plethora of TVs to watch the nightly sports games. That is a plus for me! We started off with the nachos appetizers and it was a nice hefty portion for the table. I personally ordered the Quesabirria Tacos. ($16.45) It came with 3 big portions of tacos and side of chili oil and consume for dipping those delicious tacos! You can also order a side of rice and/or beans if you like. I cosign on trying the Quesabirria tacos for sure. It's validates the price point and the generous portions will make you satisfied. The consommé was flavorful and chili oil has a nice spicy kick to it. The highlight of the night was the Mariachi band playing music and various tables and they were very good. Already didn't have the greatest experience last time but decided to give it another try for the brunch buffet. When we went previously it said brunch was about $28 and $38 for unlimited mimosas. We got there and they had crossed out the $28 option. I asked one of the girls why it was taken out and that we didn't want the mimosas as we don't drink. She said that's fine but still one price not accommodating at all especially knowing it's a new change. Not coming back this place sucks! Stopped in on a rainy Friday night at the old Kalavera which is Mariposa now. The place was pretty dead, but it's after Christmas and rainy. Sat at the bar, the bartender girls were nice, took our order. They have happy hour til 7 pm on a Friday night, NICE!! We ordered a couple of draft beers, my Pacifico was flat, but drank it anyways. We ordered chicken wings which were good, asada fries, delicious and the regular chips and salsa. Well, the chips were store bought, cold and had a greasy after taste to it, the salsa, NO flavor, no spice, no nothing. The place was like an ice box. I had to wear my jacket the whole time. Ordered another beer and we were out. I give a 3 which is for an average place. May come back just for the happy 3-7, I can be happy for $5. Beers and $7.99 appetizers. read more

If I could leave zero stars I would, me and my cousin decided to try this place yesterday for dinner. We walked in around 5ish and they sat in the back in the corner, which was fine, but it was very dark and no lighting. We couldn't even read the menu. The server came to our table, she didn't greet us. She was very rude explained happy hour and taco Tuesday. We then asked if she could turn the lights on because we could read the menu, she said I'll try and walked away. She did have other tables that she was attending to, but she never brought us waters or asked us if we wanted anything to drink. She came back a few minutes later and asked if we were ready. We asked if we could get chips and salsa. She had a dead look on her face like she didn't understand what we were saying. My cousin said it again and she didn't understand. So I said it and she rudely said it'll be $4.50. Which is fine, but her customer service is horrible and I work in customer service. Her name was Bianca S. She finally did bring us water, but after she had brought us the chips and salsa. We didn't feel comfortable in your establishment nor with your server who was very rude. And it wasn't even that busy. If you want people to come back to your establishment you need to really retrain your servers to be more friendly. read more

Came here to watch the lakers playoff game, called ahead to see if they had it playing, and it was confirmed. Got here and on one TV, no big deal. I asked the server and hostess to put it on near my table, which they did. Mid way through the meal and in the 4th quarter they change the channel to the news... on every dam TV. I can deal with my drinks taking a while, and I can deal with the food taking a while... but this was a dumb experience. I wish I had never came and stuck to Yard house or BJ's. Taco Tuesday special is not a thing here as of today (Tuesday) on Cinco De Mayo LOL For the record the food was good, but this place is ran by a bunch of idiot's. Missed the ENTIRE 4th quarter because someone put the dam news on EVERY channel. I will never come back her and will do my best to prevent anyone from coming here. read more

I dropped by the restaurant and was greeted by the manager. The restaurant is spacious, has an outdoor patio, a main dining area and two rooms that can accommodate 10 to 24 people for a private event. MENU HIGHLIGHTS: Taco Tuesdays and Sunday Brunch $26 for Adults, children's menu available. Appetizers - Ceviche, Guacamole, Quesadilla, Chicken Wings. The décor at MARIPOSAS is beautiful, but the service was extremely disappointing. Our waitress handed us menus and walked away without a greeting, without water, and without even acknowledging us again. We waited about 10 minutes with no check‑in at all. The restaurant wasn't busy, so there's no excuse for the lack of attention. The staff seemed distracted and uninterested. The menu also felt basic and didn't match the upscale look of the place. read more
