Piña colada, spicy salsas, and an already eaten fish ceviche
    Nikki M.

I've been here twice so far. I went once on the day they opened and once a couple weeks ago. I also tried to go again but no one was inside (no hostess, servers, patrons, or bartender, so after standing at the host stand for a bit I left and went somewhere else). Many improvements have happened since the first day: 1. They finally have their liquor license and their Piña Coladas are on point 2. Portions are huge! 3. The menu now is in both English & Spanish so no matter who you are you can actually read it. 4. Salsas are less "burn your tongue off". 5. My server got my order right the second time around and service was speedy and she was SO nice. She also made my drink! She was also bilingual so that was handy. Like most Blue Islanders, we all miss our old Mariscos spot La Sirena which moved to Crestwood. But this is *not* La Sirena, so I encourage you to get a dish you're not already in love with from there, otherwise you might be disappointed. Anyhoo, here's what's good: The fish ceviche! Get that. The flank steak and crab leg platter, excellent! Drinks-- on point, strong but balanced. Skips: Nayarit sauce leaves something to be desired, butter garlic sauce is very greasy and too raw garlicky (and I'm someone who eats a ton of garlic), both the green and orange habanero salsas are very hot, watery blended up pulp that needs more salt and something to balance the heat. I also think they should have chips to start instead of the saltines and tostadas. Overall, a welcome addition to the neighborhood. I loved my food the second time around. Their flank steak was the bomb and cooked perfect medium rare, no gristle, just tender and seasoned perfectly. The best thing is that the portions are just excellent. One platter can feed two people, so at around $30, you could probably share one and be happy.

There is a Service- service at the door. But from there, it was hit or miss. No one asked to refill a glass or add ice. Had to run one of the servers down for ketchup while he sat at the front door. Food- i wasn't sure what to order so i went with the Meatballs. And that was an excellent choice. The beef tasted fresh and tender. The red sauce and cheese paired well. It also came with garlic bread. I made it through three of the five meat balls and was stuffed. The Flan and ice cream came with the meal. I had a little one with me and she got the chicken tenders and fries. The chicken did not taste manufactured. Definitely rib meat (breast meat). Crispy, crunchy and delicious. Fries were on point too. I was happy to see the meal was served with fruit. Soup and garlic bread is served.. please don't ask for salsa and chips, wrong place. Pink Lemonade was a perfect mix between sweet and tart. Overall, I recommend this little space of Spain. Not for my service experience, but for the food.

Even though it was extremely busy, everything felt welcoming. The true star of the night? The food. The sangria was smooth and refreshing the perfect start to our date. We shared the beef pintxos, which were packed with flavor, and the paella... absolutely divine. Every bite tasted authentic. We also ordered the goat cheese and the meatballs, and both were rich, savory, and completely satisfying. Despite a full house, the service was fantastic. The owners were incredibly friendly and attentive, and you can truly feel the pride of it being a family-owned restaurant. That kind of warmth makes a difference. We'll absolutely be back. If you're looking for authentic Spanish flavors, a cozy atmosphere, and heartfelt hospitality, this is your spot.

I've gotten the platter for both there & for carry out and it's plenty enough to feed two people. Their stuffed pineapple is also good, langostinos nayarit are better than Tiburon across the street, but not better than La Sirena in Crestwood. Oh and they have fire nayarit wings-- really big and juicy and like $8 for 6 whole wings. I know, chicken from a Mariscos spot? But yes! Before this the guy was selling whole chicken dinners to the neighborhood via Facebook & everyone loved them, so they know their birds too. Service is great and the atmosphere too. Everything is brand new. Only problem is the food can take a little long to come out, like 40 minutes, but it's all made to order so I'm actually okay to wait for it on a busy night. This black owned business has above average standing room in the waiting area, two TVs and an ATM with a good amount of seats/benches. Seems like it might've been an old chinese food joint with a few tables, but they opted for a pure takeout experience (which is unfortunately the trend nowadays.) Since it was my first time I thought I'd try both the fish and chicken combo along with the dirty rice. The total came out to be $24 with the wait being about 15 minutes. The staff overall were nice.      After leaving the place and checking the food. I realized that the combo dinner didn't contain a roll and coleslaw like advertised which was kind of disappointing. It did have the fries though. The requested lemon pepper was there, but they also seasoned the chicken/catfish with garlic powder, salt and parsley which is fine. Everything was fried hard, but not dry which creates the perfect pleasurable crunch. The chicken and fish tasted better than a lot of the restaurants in the area with the fish having a lightness to the breading that's sorely missed. Some of the chicken was weirdly tough though as if it was slightly undercooked.      Speaking of misses we have to talk about the dirty rice. Dirty rice is one of those dishes that seems like it either is absolute perfection or an abomination with no in-between. This unfortunately falls into the latter with it not only looking boring with all brown notes, but the initial taste as well as texture being an off putting creamy rancid trip to flavor hell. After a just a few bites my stomach turned which does not bode well for this dish. I have no idea what went wrong here, but it seems like it may have been sitting out too long. Even the smell was a bit rancid. At least it has a good ratio of ground beef to rice which a lot of places skimp on. They also attempted to add in some vegetables like peppers although they are barely noticeable.       Overall Surf's up is a good spot with friendly staff, decent prices, but some issues with quality. My advice is to make sure the cooking temps are correct and consistent. Definitely make sure if food is sitting idle, that it is kept at the mandatory minimum of 140 degrees farenheit to avoid it going rancid so quickly. Also, double check the orders before sending them out or edit the menu if it is outdated.

Music is pretty loud in this small space. We decided on the 3 entrees for 69.00 with a glass of wine. We chose the pepper steak, smothered chicken, orange chicken, catfish and spaghetti, and the bbq catfish. Overall the food was ok., The bbq fish was a little to fishy and the smothered chicken was heavily salted. The star of our 6 dishes was the fried piece of catfish. The food came out quickly but nothing was piping hot. The server was OK as well, he did exactly what we expect of a server nothing more nothing less. I will say next time I would take the drive to the West side location, to me the food choices are better as well as the service.
