We used to go all the time but stopped going because it became very pricey and on top of it they started charging for chips. Decided to give it another try and ordered a wet chicken burrito à la carte. I was shocked when I got the bill - $21. Mind you, this wasn't a burrito combo plate with beans and rice - it was a single chicken burrito. Needless to say this will be the last time. There is better Mexican food in town at a much more reasonable price and free chips and salsa to get ripped off here. read more

The service here was great! As soon as you sit down, you're greeted with fresh chips and salsa, which is always the perfect start! The menu has a huge variety of options, but my favorite by far were the carne asada tacos. They were loaded with flavor, big portions, and came with rice and beans that completed the meal perfectly. The atmosphere is always welcoming & cozy, they had a couple TVs on with the game showing! Overall, a great experience -- tasty food, good service, and definitely a spot I'll keep coming back to! read more

Tried this place for the first time as a new resident of Ramona coming from Chula Vista. This place at first looks like it could be a hidden gem of delicious food. I ordered carnitas, it was good. Wasn't that impressed. Margarita was not worth the taste or price. And was charged for complementary chips and salsa. NEVER experienced a Mexican restaurant putting chips and salsa on the table only to be charged for it later. Chips and salsa should be ordered if they are charging for it. First visit and was recommended by a local. The place was so busy, we immediately thought it must be great. However, we were very disappointed by the lackluster service, and the food. I mean, this had to be some of the worst Mexican food we've ever eaten. FOOD: First off, a basket of Chips & Salsa was $3...ouch! We started with an order of Camaron (Shrimp) Tostada Ceviche ($12.99) to share among the five of us. It was only okay. For entrèes, I had the Camarones a la Diabla ($22.99), which was awful. The shrimp were good, however the Diabla sauce tasted like ketchup, with sriracha for the heat, and the rice and beans were very bland. We also tried the Two Shrimp Enchilada Plate ($21.99), Camarones Rancheros ($22.99), Two Enchiladas Suizas Plate ($15.99), and Two Shrimp Enchiladas a la carte ($11.99). The green sauce on the Enchiladas Suizas was good, but everything else was bland or downright not tasty. Ramona needs good restaurants to accommodate their booming winery tourist experiences. Unfortunately, I don't think this one was. I'd be hard pressed to make a return visit. Very disappointing. read more

Huge portions and good quality ingredients. Food was really good. I also got a Blended Mango margarita but was disappointed by the lack of tequila taste- it tasted like a virgin drink. Their speciality drinks are made with wine agave and maybe thats why? Not sure, but still was a good mango flavor. Service was good! read more

I would give this restaurant zero stars if I could. visited Mariscos Mar de Cortez in Ramona, CA after a wine tasting event nearby. I had seen this place many times but never tried it before. I regret that I did. The restaurant claims to be a Mexican seafood restaurant, but the seafood options are very limited and disappointing. The ceviche we ordered was bland and watery, as if they just poured some clamato juice over it. The shrimp enchiladas I had for dinner were nothing special, and the Shrimp A La Diabla was just terrible. The sauce was basically ketchup with some hot sauce mixed in, and the all shrimp tasted pre-cooked. Service was also very mediocre. The young lady that served for us did m=not have much experience and made a few mistakes as well. I have had much better Mexican food elsewhere, even Chipotle is not this bad as that is a lot to say. Ordered to go carne asada burrito that was full of grease crazy carne asada fries, soaked in grease tasted like noddles nothing crunchy and the guacamole and sourcream come in a to go container mixed together! Had a late lunch here on Monday, we were one of three tables of people in the restaurant and I was sad to see it slow [it was about 4 o'clock] because the food was really good and the waitress was funny and kind. I've literally driven by this place for the last 15 years on my way to my wife's family in Ramona always thinking about how much I want to try it and I finally have now... twice! The food is definitely a 5 star... the portions are huge and the food is fresh and delicious! The chips could definitely use some help and/or some salt... especially since you have to pay for them and they're not complimentary like most places Service and decor are adequate... not that I really care as long as the food is good. The only real for the 2 stars is that the birria is amazing!!! A bit fatty but so good!!! On the other hand the shrimp cocktail is about the worst over cooked rubbery shrimp we've probably ever had the cocktail has something that makes it brown and tastes really bad we probably should have left when we tasted the chips and salsa .. the tomato paste salsa has no flavor we added stuff and it wasn't salvageable I feel that if you're charging $3. For it this should be edible.. the margaritas were a complete disappointment as well .. how hard is it to make a decent margarita? Our favorite restaurant in Ramona. We go at least 2 times a week. The girls are all super welcoming and make it and enjoyable experience. The have the best Quesi Shrimp tacos and the Molcajete is the best we have ever had. Must try! read more

Inconsistent quality. Have had Chicken fajitas that are 50% giant inedible slabs of fat, Shrimp fajitas with fewer than 8 shrimp for the entire entree, and half the time they forget to include the tortillas or the guacamole and tomatoes that you are supposed to get as part of your entree. But sometimes it's great. You never know whether you're going to have a great dinner or a big disappointment. All avoidable so it seems like they just don't care. Also the lime margarita tastes like it's made with lemon juice instead of lime juice which is very unpleasant, and for some reason there is always a mountain of salt IN the bottom of the margarita (not on the rim) which is enough to make you gag when you get to the bottom of the glass. Could easily be a 5 star place with a few tweaks and quality control. read more

We were looking for a place for breakfast on a recent Sunday while passing through town and because Mariscos Mar De Cortez was open we stopped there. Overall, it was good but I left having wished I had ordered something else. Here is what we noted: - Spacious outdoor patio, which was important to us given COVID - Large menu, including lots of Mexican breakfast items - I ordered the Huevos de la Mexicana, my son got the Huevos Rancheros, and my wife got the Chilaquiles. The portions of all the dishes were huge! - My son and I substituted black beans for the refried beans...but later got hit with an up-charge on our bill. It would have been nice to have alerted to that by the server. - My wife and son really liked their selections; mine was ok but the eggs were a bit dried out and pretty so-so. - Service was fine...nothing out of the ordinary Bottom line: Acceptable place; we would probably go back again but perhaps after trying some other options in town. read more

I ordered veggie fajitas with light oil - what I got was a fajita plate of melted lard and lard soaked veggies swimming- disgusting. I told the waitress this was gross and she just said "0h" - I paid $19 bucks for this lard that was sent back. Gross food and bad service to not comp the food. read more

A surprising gem in Ramona! We had driven past a few times and thought it looked interesting so finally decided to check it out. The food was excellent - we had carnitas and aguachiles. The portions were just right and the prices for the portions were decent, but see below for a note on that.. As you can see from pictures, I tried a little bit of some things. Second, service was top notch. This is the kinda of place you just want to keep coming back to again and again. The ladies were very attentive and really nice from the moment we walked in. So why not the five stars? For a few reasons. First, beware prices on the menu (which I am posting) do not match prices on the receipt! That's a HUGE no no. Management, please take the time to update the menu prices! Second, the sopa 7 mares (sea food soup for you gringos ) was lacking quantity in some items. Crab legs? More like crab toes (see pictures) fish? Hardly any. It had more octopus and shrimp than anything else. It was still pretty tasty. Anyhow, cone on down and try the place, I think its worth it. Just know prices are about to $2 to $3 more. I'm not from the area, I was on vacation but will come back when I'm in the area again Hope this info helps someone read more

Mariscos Mar de Cortez is a popular local sit-down restaurant in Ramona. Serving a wide variety of standard Mexican fare, they also have lots of seafood options (mariscos) and a beer bar with local brews on tap. I stopped here recently when passing through Ramona to grab lunch. The place is big, with a nice patio, and a friendly staff. On the day we visited, the service was pretty laid-back (= slow). That's pretty much my only complaint. The food was pretty good and the fish tacos I had were nice enough. If you have a relaxing afternoon to spend in town, this place can't be beat! My mom had the fish tacos and she said it was the best she ever had. I see some reviews complaining about the chips and salsa costing $3 (*heavy eye roll*). Yes they do but worth it and I don't blame them for charging that with inflation and everything else. If you don't want to pay $3 for chips and salsa, maybe don't go out for dinner? We were going to try this place on Saturday, November 30. Sat down in a booth and was barely greeted by a waitress who apparently doesn't know how to smile or greet customers warmly. I wish I'd gotten her name because I would've posted it here. She could use a little training refresher. When we learned that not even the first basket of chips and salsa were complementary, we decided to leave. The place looked cute enough but the poor first impression and charging for chips left us cold. We will not be back to give them a second try. Have always gone here everytime we come through Ramona. Loved it pre-covid. The last few times we've been have almost been unbearable with the smell in there. It's really awful and very off putting! We tried it anyway and the food was so- so. Not at all what we remembered. I ordered a Chile Verde burrito weet style. The peeled was not cubed but looked more like carnitas was mixed with some green sauce and stuffed with raw onions. The sauce looked too be the green sauce from a can and the taste was pretty plain. My burrito cost $20. ($4. extra for wet style). But $16. dry style. The chips and salsa used to be brought when you say down, but was $3. We were asked if we wanted chips and salsa when we sat down but weren't told they charged for it now. My husband ordered the carnitas plate. It was full of fast and very bland. What topped all of this off was that we both got an upset stomach that night. We're in our RV, so we had to fight for the bathroom. I slept with a trashcan next to me as I felt so nauseated and didn't want to throw up in bed. At one time (a few years ago) their reviews were high and is why we chose them. Now we see so many more with higher reviews. We will be trying a new place next time! The smell though was soooo off-putting. Almost unbearable. read more
