This place is a 90 mile round trip from where I live but sometimes you have a free day to fill and why not. Road trip! It was worth the drive. Food was so good (burger and grilled chese with brisket.) And even though it's in the podunk Santa Ysabel, there are other things (pie, bread) at the same intersection so you can get a lot done. I'd like to also call out the fries. I have an unhealthy obsession and visceral reaction to bad fries, but Farmhouse 78 hits it out of the park with their fries. It defies logic that other sit-down places will meticulously prepare quality, fresh food, then slap frozen Ore-Idas down on the plate. Farmhouse 78 does not do that. Fresh cut potatoes fried in beef tallow. Doesn't get any better than that. I'd add a sixth star just for the fries if I could. I plowed through them before I even touched the sandwich. read more

This place is great. We stopped on our way home from Julian and had a tasty lunch-a Ruben's sandwich, made with their home made sour Kraft, and the baked potato salad as a side. But be aware as most businesses out here, close early & extend 2 hours late Friday and Saturdays only. Now onto the good stuff! Breakfast is main event here on the weekends, and let me tell you will not be disappointed, but you do have to get here before they stop serving, and it is worth it! I had the biscuit, egg and gravy dish, and it was delicious! The baby cakes (which are mini cupcakes) are tasty, but not too sweet. For lunch, they have burgers sandwiches, salad, soup, etc.. And then there's also a supper menu which we haven't tried yet. But you do have to get here early if you come during the week It's busy on the weekends with locals and tourists, driving through on the weekends. They offer dessert, which is just a hard decision, because you have Julian Pies & Dudley's bakery across the way. It's a good little corner to make a pitstop anytime you feel hungry. Fiancé and I stopped by here first, as we were there for the pie next door. First off, the service is amazing, staff are incredibly knowledgeable and friendly, making it so pleasant as soon as you enter. It's very clean, a beautiful open space and light. They weren't joking when they said everything is farm fresh! I ordered the Shrimp Po'Boy and boy oh boy was it delicious! My fiancé ordered the chicken fingers. Absolutely everything was perfect. We came to dine at the Farmhouse 78 around 11:15am on Sunday after the Santa Ysabel Hike. Walked in during rush hour and was greeted by the host and was immediately seated with menus! She was so nice, she fixed the bottom of the wobbly table leg. There happened to be several employees cleaning tables and refreshing ice tea refills but inconveniently only one waitress taking eleven or twelve table orders! Whoa! Not sure what was going on or why she was the only waitress but we were waiting for our order to be taken. The table next to us was waiting for a box Togo and another table asked for hot sauce. I think they were almost done with their meal 20mins when they asked the waitress again. She finally brought the bottle but didn't bother checking the bottle because it had no hot sauce in it. Empty! The table asking for the Togo box had to ask twice before she brought the box and bill! She finally came over to take our order and we asked her how her day was going and she said I am so tired and laughed. We have seen restaurants wars on cooking shows and the restaurant owner and chef say the number one thing you don't tell your customers is that you are tired. You always show customers your smiling face. Get this girl some help! Food came out cooked well and seasoned well. Turkey Club was delicious, bread itself was flat but if toasted more, and when eaten together tastes good. The Club could have went easy on the mayo. It was a bit overdressed in between the lettuce. Very disappointed with our experience. We were charged an automatic 22% gratuity even though we arrived separately from the people we knew, sat at our own table, and were served separately. I understand the charge for a large party sitting together, but that wasn't the case. $75 for two plates and one iced coffee was already excessive, and the unexpected 22% charge made it more frustrating. A tip is NOT mandatory, if you want a tip provide great service or minimum good service. Flat soda, dropped off food left and never came back until we asked for the check. We didn't consider a tip was warranted due to lack of service, however we were chased down and forced to leave a tip. Our experience here was extremely frustrating from start to finish. The waitress had an attitude the entire time- no smile, and no basic attentiveness. We weren't offered water, and every time I tried to get her attention this entire time, she deliberately looked away. Another waiter had to bring us water instead. When she came to take our order, we gave order for my kid and for my husband but for me I asked for just a couple more minutes to decide because I was handling my baby, and she sighed before saying okay. Even after that, I waited over 10 minutes and called her twice to let her know I was ready. She wasn't busy-I could clearly see her standing behind the counter. When I ordered a burger and asked if it could be substituted with a chicken patty instead of beef, first she flatly said no and spoke on behalf of the chef without even checking. Then She said 'I can do Impossible patty but no chicken'. I've asked for this substitution many times at other places and it's usually not an issue. Eventually, I had to settle for an Impossible patty. Also they had other chicken patty options in other chicken sandwich options which I saw when she was gone. And she didn't even suggested that if you want chicken you can order a sandwich. We also asked for a baby chair for our child. She said she'd check, but never gave us any update. I later saw her standing at the counter complaining about us to another waitress. When she noticed I could hear and see them, she abruptly stopped talking and walked away. The food took over 30 minutes to arrive for a very simple order-one omelette, one burger, and chicken nuggets for our baby. My burger was burned and inedible, and I didn't even finish it. The irony was at checkout (I went to the counter, didn't want to waste our time there) and asked for check- she suddenly appeared with a big smile asking, "How was the food? Did you like it?" after completely ignoring us the entire meal. We were really disappointed, especially since I had been encouraging my husband to visit this place for days. The wings were a pleasant surprise with a Great well seasoned Crispy Batter and nice and juicy tender and perfectly fried. 8 wings $17.00 A little pricy but a great Wing. Loretta ordered The House Chicken Pot Pie. $16.00 Different than we've had before Had a flavor like Broccoli Soup not Chicken Pot Pie Flavors. Not to my liking. I ordered The Farmhouse Cheeseburger, $19.00 Kind of overpriced for a cheeseburger but it was A decent burger with good flavor and cooked perfectly Medium Rare. Could have been bigger Juicy with a nice slaw on top. Includes a good sized order of tasty French fries . I would order again. All in all this place is a ok stop for a bite. This was my first time in town and we came here for breakfast. My goodness the food was delicious! We were surprised it wasn't packed on a Saturday morning when we walked in. We were seated promptly by the very kind hostess. There was a beautiful piano in the restaurant that I wish someone was playing! We ordered The Farmer and the Classic Combo. The Farmer had a delicious and large home cooked buttermilk biscuit on top with a very good house made sausage gravy! It was a so good! And for the Classic Combo, I got sausage with Sunny Side Up eggs and an English muffin on the side. The sausages had great flavor and the hasbrowns were cooked so well! I also ordered a hot hocolate and it was quite large but also very delicious! When the server brought put our food she asked if we wanted yot sauce and I asked what kind they had and she named 3 and we asked for all three and she gave us an annoyed look that made us feel uncomfortable and I actually thought it was pretty rude.. she made us feel like she was fake nice to us the entire visit.. that was kind of weird but the hosted was genuinely sweet to us, she even gave us a refill on coffee and greated us even we left. On Wednesday, I decided to visit again and ordered the BBQ pulled pork sandwich. Holy crap, this I soooo good!!! Pricing is great considering how good the food is. Most importantly....the carrot cake. One slice is big enough to feed an army, not complaining of course. By far, one of the best carrot cakes I have ever had, aside from my own. I was not in the mood for outdoor Al fresco dining. My skin felt like chicharron and i needed AC so bad! Hostess gave us a booth & my gosh! The lights on the wall are wayyyyy too bright. Felt like LEDs were blinding me! (This is the only reason why I docked a star). Staff was great. I slurped 2 strawberry lemonades (sweet strawberries muddled). The PB&j wings were huge! I had no idea! Sweet and saucy jam w/ crushed peanuts. Then, I ordered a petite farmhouse salad, but w/ ranch dressing. It got to the point- I was kinda deboning my chicken meat from the wings and putting it in the salad... (which was a great combo, btw). I'm so glad I found Farmhouse 78 when planning my birthday weekend trip. I wanted to find a spot that had lots of different options and had a cute atmosphere. This is exactly what I found! We came at 8AM right as they opened and we were greeted and seated immediately. I got the hot green tea and Farmer's Wife breakfast. While we were waiting, they gave us a couple complimentary seasonal baby cakes. Delicious! They were like tiny little muffins. I appreciate that they gave me a hot water pot and a green tea bag along with lemon and honey. The serving size of my breakfast plate was LARGE- I couldn't finish it all. The ingredients were all very fresh and I enjoyed the dressing on my greens. I wanted to "eat light" before a day full of eating but it left me stuffed for a solid 5 hours! Everyone in my party enjoyed their food. We received excellent service throughout our meal and their bathroom was clean and well-stocked. I'll keep it short - do not come here. Much (not all) of the staff is terribly rude, starting from the top. Much like a couple others have said, we've had very rude waitresses serve us and made us feel like we were inconveniencing her even though this was her job. She also seemed to be nice to either those she knew or of a certain demographic. Deciding to give a second chance a month later, I called the restaurant ahead of time to see if that particular waitress was still there and to provide feedback. My husband and I were returning from a hiking weekend with our two doggies when we searched for a pet-friendly place to have lunch. Google suggested Farmhouse 78, and we are so glad it did. At first, I didn't notice the outdoor patio, so I went inside to ask. From the moment I walked through the door, every employee was incredibly friendly and welcoming. They made me feel valued as a customer and even offered to let us dine inside with our dogs. Out of respect for other guests, we chose to sit outside on their lovely patio. Everything about this place was wonderful--the cleanliness, the atmosphere, the service, and how quickly our food arrived. Most importantly, the food was absolutely delicious. My husband had the pork sandwich, and I ordered the cheeseburger with French fries. Everything tasted fresh, flavorful, and homemade. When I went inside to pay, I had the pleasure of meeting Cyndie at the register. I told her how impressed we were with our experience, and she was just as warm and friendly as everyone else we encountered. This place was okay. First time making my way up to Julian and wanted to get something to eat in the Santa Ysabel area. It was very busy when we got here because it was the weekend. We put our name down and were told it would be about a 25 minute wait. The workers seemed very busy and unorganized. As a customer, I felt unwelcome and ignored. They felt very slow for the amount of tables they had open and the amount people waiting. Seemed like their system was not efficient. The inside of the restaurant was decorated cute and the food was not bad. The only reason I'm not rating this place 2 stars is because my food was good although it was on the pricier side. I got a grilled cheese with tomato basil soup which went well. My boyfriend got the salt and vinegar wings and thought it was too vinegary. Overall, I wouldn't come here again. This place could have easily earned 5 stars if it weren't for the service. I'm a pretty tough critic -- I deduct one star for each major issue -- but let's start with what went right. The food was absolutely delicious. We ordered the Champagne Chicken (with pappardelle pasta instead of mashed potatoes), the Chicken Pot Pie, and the Fish & Chips. Everything tasted fresh and homemade. My Chicken Pot Pie definitely wasn't frozen or pre-made -- I could taste the fresh herbs, and everything was cooked perfectly al dente. The Champagne Chicken was tender with a rich, flavorful sauce, and the fish was crisp and fresh. Even the fries were hand-cut -- think In-N-Out style, but better. We all practically licked our plates clean. Now, here's why I only gave it 2 stars: 1. The Hostess - Absolutely terrible. And I'm not exaggerating -- I overheard at least three other tables complaining about her attitude. When she sat us, she set only two place settings. I told her, "Oh, there's actually three of us," and she snapped back, "Well, you only told me two," as she walked away. For context, we weren't even on the waitlist because the owner/manager, Kathy, forgot to add us after talking to my husband at the takeout counter. So no, she didn't hear us say three -- she wasn't even nearby. As we were leaving, another family mentioned they didn't tip because of how rude the hostess was. 2. The Waitress - She told us our food was next since we ordered next, but then served the table beside us first. That table happened to know the owner, who came over to greet them. Then she served another party before finally bringing ours. 3. Cold Food and Poor Service - When our food did arrive, it was cold. My mom's fish wasn't even warm. The waitress never checked on us, didn't refill our drinks, and didn't return until it was time to drop off the bill. To be fair, the owner did mention that their computers had gone down for an hour, which might explain some of the chaos. And as we were leaving, the hostess (who honestly looked like Wednesday Addams with her long black pigtails) finally smiled and said, "Have a good night." Maybe because her shift was almost over. Went here for a birthday treat with friends and had such a great time. They have a parking lot with a Tesla charging station, which was a lifesaver since my friend's car was nearly out of battery.
