The pasta is expensive if you think of it as only *pasta*. Except, the pasta was cooked to perfection and the sauce was deep and rich. We decided to choose other items and only ONE pasta dish. (+) Rigatoni -- the shape of the pasta alone caught all the rich flavor of the sauce. So. Good. (+) Lasagna -- they make only 10 for the evening. It was unlike any lasagna we've ever had. We had such a bizarre meal at Marisi. First of all, let me say that the atmosphere was absolutely beautiful. The decorations for Christmas, the wallpapers inside, the beautiful outdoor patio, were all just gorgeous. Dinner started off really well with fantastic drinks, outrageously good focaccia, and then delicious pastas. However, we had ordered three veggie sides with our pastas and rather than come with the pastas, they were forgotten and came after we were done with our meal. Our waiter very kindly comped these dishes for us but when they did finally arrive, they were lukewarm and were so drowned in salt they were completely inedible (the potatoes and the cranberry beans were horrific). The prices at Marisi are outrageous - we're talking 30-50 for a pasta dish, 20 for a vegetable side dish. For these prices, this dining experience should be FLAWLESS. And it was not. The kitchen appeared majorly backed up for a significant part of the night, some of our dishes were forgotten, and the vegetable sides were so salty and cold we couldn't eat them. The focaccia was great and the appetizers were decent( although wildly overpriced). It's the pasta that was so disappointing. My family is Sicilian and while I know my standards are high, this was still very below par. Our pasta wasn't even al dente...it was just hard. Strange. The sauces were their own problem and one was so oversalted you couldn't taste anything else and the other just simply had no flavor. This was our third visit to Marisi, which has quickly become a must each time we're in town. Our group of four enjoyed the Burrata and flatbread appetizers, little gem Caesar salads, and the following entrées: Rigatoni with Sttacciatella, Short rib Fusilli pasta, and butternut squash ravioli. We all agreed that outside of the burrata, (which seemed like the stone fruit was a leftover from the summer menu), everything transported us back to our summer visit to Italy. We started off with the burrata and the focaccia, I really wish bread service was free! Both were very good. We split two pasta dishes and the porterhouse, between 3 of us. We got the agnolotti and the rigatoni. Agnolotti was beyond amazing!!! Rigatoni was good, has a spiciness to it that my husband loved. Porterhouse was so good, my one complaint was the person who sent the steak down. An early Sunday evening family celebration turned out lovely! Our service team include Nick and Christina, who were both super friendly. Nick made some great suggestions, and anticipated our needs even before we asked him. Staff seemed a little bit rushed, but the place was hopping, even on Sunday. The pasta is very expensive for how little is plated, yet it was still a very delicate and enjoyable dish. They do not have gluten free pasta but they do carry a separate gf menu- my friend got the risotto it was on the saltier side but very exquisite. I have been dying to come to Marisi since it's opened and tonight was finally the night. We had reservations and were sat right away. Love that. Our waitress was so nice and personable. We started with the focaccia and the carpaccio. The focaccia came with some basil dipping oil that was devine. The carpaccio came with pine nuts, chopped scallions and horseradish. I've never had a carpaccio like that before. It was amazing! For dinner, my husband and I split the lamb chop, the pappardelle with duck ragu and the potatoes. Special shout out to the duck ragu which was bursting with flavor. I could not get enough. For dessert, we finished with the lemon meyer curd. I am a chocolate/custard girl but I've read so many rave reviews about the curd that I knew we had to get it. It did not disappoint. The lemon flavor was bright but not too tart. The pistachio crumble was the perfect amount of texture. Drinks were bomb. We highly recommend the Bordigo Bianco Vermouth. Add an their signature aperol spritz and you have all the elements to bring on that posh costal vibe. We ordered their fresh homemade pasta which is adente to a tee. Connor, our AMAZING and super personable server, recommended the rigatoni which is a beautiful balance of spicy and creamy. The spaghettoni is adventurous. You must love uni, but if you do it's creamy. decadent, and different. The burrata as an appetizer is a must! The mixture of pears, burrata (made from the Italian region of Puglia), and Spanish almonds is so thoughtful and balanced. Last but perhaps the most important point is that our server Connor was the cherry on top of the meal that I needed but didn't know it. He gave us insights about the restaurant and all of its unique touches (glassware imported from Japan!), had all the insights for food, and kept us chuckling. I am writing to share a deeply disappointing experience I had at Marisi in La Jolla on my recent visit, which happened to be my birthday. As a regular patron and a local resident who has always enjoyed dining at Marisi- I loved everything about here and all my previous visits had been nothing but amazing, but I was very much disheartened by the treatment my friend and I received on my birthday at Marisi. We were initially seated outside. However, as it was getting a little chilly, we kindly asked if there's any chance we could be moved inside. The hostess was super kind and accommodating, promptly relocating us to the patio seating area. We greatly appreciated her assistance. Once we were seated inside, the experience took a turn for the worse. Our new server was a senior Asian/Filipino-looking male (so sorry-I hate addressing people purely based on their ethnicity and gender but we didn't get his name unfortunately). Immediately when he approached us, we felt his demeanor was a little off. He did not greet us in any way (not even a "Hello" or "Hi") but right off the bat said " Will house water be fine?" Despite this, we remained polite and responded with smile, responding"House water is fine." When it was time to order drinks, we asked if we could sample the orange wine, as we were considering purchasing a bottle. The server requested our IDs, which we provided without hesitation. Upon seeing my ID, which clearly indicated that it was my twenty-seventh birthday, he aggressively asked, "Are you over 21?" With the obvious answer-my government issued ID-holding in his hand, we even thought that was a joke that he was just trying to convey that I almost looked too young to be a 27-year old. He then raised his voice and repeated the question in a more hostile tone, creating an uncomfortable and confusing situation for both my friend and me. When I tried to clarify if he was joking, he claimed it was a standard procedure after he see guests' ID. To demonstrate this, he said "Actually not only you, I will ask your friend here too if she is over 21?" - said this while holding my friend's government-issued ID in his hand. His behavior felt unnecessarily confrontational and targeted, as we did not observe him treating any other patrons in the same manner. Then-while I was still explaining my confusion, he rolled his eyes and walked away WHILE I WAS STILL TRYING TO HAVE A CONVERSATION WITH HIM POLITELY-which I found EXTREMELY disrespectful. He later returned with our wine samples, and I confronted him about his behavior, asking if he was having a bad day. He replied that his actions were only a "defense mechanism" as he called it, and that he asks everyone under 30 if they are actually over 21. I was very frustrated by this incident, especially having it happening on my birthday with my best friend. I then expressed my discomfort and told him at that point I didn't feel comfortable working with him for the rest of the night anymore. We then were assigned with a different server. Thankfully, our new server of the night- the lovely gentleman whom we unfortunately didnt get a chance to get his name, was absolutely amazing and saved our night. Despite this improvement, the negative encounter still had already overshadowed my birthday celebration and left a really bad taste in our mouth. As I was observing the first server's demeanor with other guests in the restaurant, I did notice that he was very smiley and friendly for the most part to other guests. I wasn't sure if he decided to treat us differently with such condescending attitude based off our age or the fact that we didn't order bottled water but went with house water instead. As someone who has frequently dined at Marisi and recommended it to others, this experience was a stark contrast to the high standard of service I have come to expect from your restaurant. I stumbled across this Italian restaurant on yelp and decided to give it a try based on the look and the vibe it portrayed. I tend to look for fancy restaurants with a vibrant atmosphere. Marisi definitely fit the profile. Not only was the restaurant furnished well, but the food was fantastic. The decorated tiled floors, the color scheme, the mirrors, and the layout of the restaurant is attractive. For food we ordered the Focaccia (bread), Crudo, Squid, Strascinati (lamb ragu pasta), Gemelli (clam pasta), Line-caught fish, Bone in New York Steak, Coffee and Cream (dessert), and Milk Chocolate (dessert). The Focaccia was served freshly baked and salted. It was delicious, and even more appetizing when dipping the bread into the chili condiment. The Squid was probably my favorite dish. The flavors the calabrian chilis and the fingerling potatoes mixed well with the squid and the sauce. The crudo was the least memorable dish. It was plated well and designed to taste simplistic but I felt it was missing a substance. The Strascinati was flavorsome as each bite had a hint of gaminess due to the perfectly cooked lamb. Also the thinly sliced squared cheese topping was a nice touch. Their new pasta, the Gemelli, was also a good pick as the dish was seasoned well. I did like the texture of the noodles as it is a type that I have not tried before. The noodles to the Gemelli are basically two thick noodles spiraled together. The Line-caught fish was salted well and cooked to perfection. The charred skin to the fish made it that much better. The New York steak was just ok. In fact, it could have done without the brown sauce that the waiter pours on it. I am a crazy critic on steak so I may be a little more judgmental on steak than others. For dessert we ordered the Milk Chocolate and the Coffee and cream. Both desserts were delicious. However, the Milk Chocolate caught me by surprise. It is plated flat with decorated cream covering the top. You have to dig through the cream to get to the chocolate which gives you an quenching bite of both flavors. The Coffee and cream had little chocolate bars hidden in it which was delightful. Overall the atmosphere and the food was amazing. Also, their service is impeccable. We had 8 and wanted to have two parties of 4 sit together (there were tables to do this), and they wouldn't do that for whatever reason/because they are a "new restaurant and still figuring everything out." The prices are high and none of the menu items stuck out as that great. The duck pasta dish tasted like pulled pork from a crockpot. The ambiance is great though and the building is absolutely beautiful! The food is supposed to be shared family style, but the portions are tiny. This is Italian and I left HUNGRY. I wanted this restaurant to be good and they are a contender, but made some critical mistakes that brought them down in my opinion. First the good. I love the ambience of the restaurant. They have an amazing decor with stages to it from atrium, bar area and separate secluded dinner area. The service was excellent. They kept up on refilling our water very well and poured for us almost after every sip and replaced the carafe when half way! They could not have been better servers (and I tipped accordingly). The wines we had Chianti and Cab were excellent and enjoyed it during our meal and conversation. Now for the bad. My wife and I went there for a romantic dinner and from the reviews/prices had high expectations. We don't like going out to eat mediocre food that we could do at home ourselves and unfortunately got that for our dinner. We started with a beet salad which was okay. The beets were soft and had a strong smoked flavor, but the goat cheese was almost tasteless. We were not crazy about the smoke flavor and would have much preferred a standard pickled beet or just roasted beets with a flavorful goat cheese. We thought we could do better here. We had a gf bolognese and a fillet mignon for our main courses. My wife's bolognese was good and she enjoyed it. I tried some of it and it was a bit bland for my taste. The primary factor for my review however is that my fillet was cold at first bite. It took a long time to get my dinner and it was cold. For $85, I expect my steak to be perfect in every way, but it was lacking. The flavor was excellent, the accompaniment was great, and was a perfect medium, but it was cold! As this was the highest priced item, this was the star and it was severely lacking. That unfortunately sank the whole experience from an amazing time to feeling ripped off. If my steak was perfect this would have been an easy 5 star, but this to me is a major issue. I can buy a fillet at the store, cook it perfectly, make a good sauce, and make it hot when I eat it. Since it took so long to get I did not want to complain in person and wait another 45min to get another steak so I finished it. As I said the taste was good. There has been quite a fuss surrounding the recent opening of Marisi, with Instagram posts, etc., and a well-orchestrated buzz disseminated around the San Diego restaurant community. Even my dermatologist [who lives in La Jolla Shores] was waiting for the restaurant to open! My first visit was on a Wednesday evening at 5:30 p.m., exactly one week after the "official" opening. Parking was easy to find on Wall Street, right in front of the historic La Jolla Post Office, one block away. As I entered the courtyard patio at Marisi where the reception desk is posted, I observed two hostesses and a man [who I was later to learn was the general manager] attending to a man and a woman in front of me checking in with their apparent reservation. There seemed to be some unknown difficulty for the staff in checking them in, with the hostess scanning her screen over and over, and furtive conversations among the staff hovered around the computer, but finally the manager led them away to their designated table. Then it was my turn to approach the reception desk, which, by the way, featured a beautiful and large grouping of pink roses fashioned into a square. It was absolutely lovely. I announced my name to the brown-haired hostess in a brown floral print dress. As she was locating my name, I commented that I preferred to sit at one of the banquettes on the patio, most of which were open at that early hour on Wednesday. It should be noted that the front courtyard patio is really the "main dining room" at Marisi. The other options are to be seated at a group of little tables squashed against the wall surrounding the imposing interior bar, or in a small, claustrophobic low-ceilinged back dining room painted in shades of yellow. That's it. In response to my comment about seating, the hostess pursed her lips into a frown and walked from behind her podium a few steps to a little table plunked in the center of the patio and stated as she gestured with her hand, "I actually have you here". I again remarked that I preferred to be seated at any one of the multiple open banquette tables throughout both sides of the patio---I was NOT requesting a specific table. With that, she returned to her screen and with eyes downcast for what seemed like five minutes of searching [for what?] she finally turned to a smiling, curly-haired busboy who was now standing by her side and whispered to him to take me to a banquette table on the north side of the patio as she pointed at it with her finger. As I began to follow the busboy, I turned to the hostess with a smile to say "Thank you", but her only response to me was downcast eyes and the continued pursed frown. No words emanated from her downturned mouth. After the initial interaction with the unpleasant and unprofessional hostess, it was a pleasure to interact with my very professional server, Morgan, from Maryland, as well as the sommelier, Chris Plaia and the Marisi General Manager, Ghali Benhima [who, as stated above, unfortunately had left the reception desk to seat the man and woman ahead of me before my checking in with the hostess, so he did not witness the unfortunate interaction]. What I loved about Marisi was the five delicate roses on each table, and the unique and very thin wine glasses. Morgan controlled the pace of the four courses I selected [including bread] exactly at the cadence I had requested, and she was there to pour the wine as needed. We even made an effort to show up early to get seated on time! It begs the question of a necessity of a reservation if you're just going to be seated on their own schedule anyways.
