A Review of Mark O.'s Bar and Grill Mark O.'s Bar and Grill in beautiful Portage, Indiana, is one of a micro-chain of two sports-bars offering tasty comestibles and refreshingly quaffable potations at scandalously low prices. Not only that! The space, which is as immense as a warehouse, provides you with a parcel of fun games and an impressively expansive digital jukebox. It is really like a wonderland in beautiful Northwestern Indiana. Though I am allergic to sports in all forms, and sports-bars are not my usual scene, my experience there was surprisingly agreeable. The Malt Beer-Battered Cod, accompanied by onion-rings or French fries (both are equally priced), is immeasurably better than it has any reason to be. What happens in that mystical kitchen I will never know, but every time I have ordered them, the onion-rings come out crisp and sharp and the strips of cod, coated in fried, golden sarcophagi, are soft and friable on the inside and crunchy on the outside. But the real reason I will never forget this playspace-eatery is Sam, the bartendress and maîtresse d'. Sam is an ethereal undine princess who emerged from a magical lake in Northwestern Indiana to make everyone happy. My boyfriend and I stopped here for lunch on our way back to Chicago. It was right off I-90, which was very convenient. The restaurant itself looks to be in a gutted out auto shop. It's large inside with lots of seating and TVs, and there is a smell of cigarette smoke when you walk in. You do get used to it, but if the smoking diners aren't your jam, there's plenty of outdoor patio seating. I should also note that no one was wearing a mask, which seems common in Indiana, so the outdoor seating is there if you're freaked about covid. The waitress was also tending the bar and was FANTASTIC. She was nice, quick with our drinks, and checked in on us. The prices were lower than most.. a double bloody was under $7! And one of the best i've ever had. We both had the hangover burger, and the meat was fresh and perfectly cooked ( I did catch a glimpse of the kitchen - the cooks looked to be flame broiling their burgers.. yummm) the lettuce and tomato were crisp and juicy, and the fries were the perfect fluffy on the inside- crunchy on the outside texture. They were piping hot and the batter on them was insanely good. If you're traveling across the state line and looking for a quick bite to eat that won't break the bank, check this place out. Ya walk into a place that is NOT busy.... maybe 5 people at the bar and only ONE, yup 1, table has A person sitting at it..... ya think ya goin to get some quick service, right?? Nope! I sat at the table for 15 minutes while the bartender kept glancing over several times but was too busy chatting to even let someone who actually works know there was a customer sitting there. Sad. I was out visiting family and stopped in here for a bite to eat. The menu had a great variety of appetizers as well as burgers and even fish. The appetizers all come in a large portion big enough to share with a few other people over some drinks. A good value for the price. Everything came out hot and quick. The bartenders were all very friendly and gave great service. For my dinner I went with the Mark O's burger. I noticed another yelper also commented on this great burger. Comprised of sauteed mushrooms, sauteed onions, two types of cheese melted to perfection and lets not forget the horsey-mayo. I am drooling just thinking about it now. Sadly I have to mention this, because most places think they can get away with frozen burgers and trust me I know the difference. THIS WAS 100% NON-FROZEN! So many times has a burger joint has failed me due to frozen meat. How hard is it to buy ground beef and make a patty???! Mark O's has it right! To comment on the atmosphere, it was a wide open space with lots of TVs and inviting colors. A pet peeve of mine is uncomfortable bar stools. I was not disappointed here. Yes there is smoking, but that is unavoidable in the state of Indiana. However, when I visited it was warm outside and I did have the option of sitting outside but choose to sit inside and watch the game on TV. It does seem like they are trying to combat the smoke issue with huge garage door windows. Tons of fresh air. Lastly, although I did not partake I did notice they have an impressive game room. Stopped in while travelling down rte 80. Mark O's is a bar that also serves food. Beer selection is a little above average by volume of beers, but not exceptional in quality. Service, although attractive to the eye, left me waiting several minutes while chatting up other folks. The reuben I ordered was average. Corned beef was lean,but only about one finger high. Being from out of state, i'm not used to folks smoking in restaurants anymore and that definitely affected my enjoyment of the sandwich as well. They also charge you 1.50 if you want to use a credit card under 15.00...a clear violation of their user agreement. I'll forget this place as soon as I get back on the highway. read more

Not pleased at all. Went and ordered to go since I can't stand eating with a bar full of smoke. Ordered a Ruben and Burger. We get back to hotel and there was no thousand island for the Ruben and the burger was way over done. Onions rings were super soggy along with the fries. Typical bar scene, nothing special here. Dimly lit, mediocre staff and kind of dingy inside despite a recent remodel. The food is typical bar food and they could stand to keep a few more unique beer choices on tap. The building at least used to look cool but when they remodeled it they turned it into a stucco looking building with a big block letter sign on the marquee and it's kind of ugly looking now. You have to know the price of the drink you are partaking in at this location in Portage. For example, the waitress charged my friend $5.25 for a whiskey and coke. The next waitress charged her $4.50 for the identical drink! Do they make up the prices as they go? Keep an eye on them!!! read more

I was in town for a business thing and came here with a bunch of coworkers afterwards two days in a row. Mark O's was exactly what we were looking for - a chill bar with decent drinks and food. It's kind of split down the middle with one half of the bar dimly lit with a bunch of tables and room for live music, then the other side has pool tables, arcade machines... that kind of thing. They had a pretty good beer selection, at least as far as dives go. We also got dinner there one night and it was pretty good too. Just typical bar food - burgers, sandwiches, wings, etc., but the prices weren't bad, food tasted pretty good, and service was quick. The bartenders (ladies in skimpy uniforms, for some reason) were also attentive and quick. It helped that the place wasn't very busy either of the nights we were there, but good service is still appreciated. Overall a good experience at a nice little hangout spot. read more

Went to the new Muster location for dinner with my hubby. The burgers were really good and I really liked the French fries. It isn't really my type of atmosphere - I prefer warmth/wood bars/tin ceilings. The bar here is plastic. But service and sound are the reason for 2 stars. Hubby ordered a Maker's neat - Bartender didn't know what Makers Mark was or what neat meant. She also didn't know how to pour a Dewar's & water. She's a bartender! Just two examples of bad service. There was no organization and the staff seemed to be a little competitive with each other. The sound was so loud we had to repeat our drink/food orders multiple times as did the people around us. It was 6:00 not 10pm. They also use tickets and calculators to figure out your bill. I'm pretty sure we were overcharged $10 but never saw a receipt with what we ordered. We waited so long; we just wanted to get out of there. They have these great TVs but were showing Wheel of Fortune and an old hockey game on the NHL network... on a college football Saturday. read more

First of all this review goes for the MUNSTER,IN location. The first time I've EVER been to this location, i didn't have a ID on me because I recently lost my wallet. The waiter accused me of being underage because of that, which im not going to go crazy over that because I KNOW what age i am. So i just left. So the same waitress from last time came up to me crazy talking about "last time you were here underage" BTW HER NAME IS ANGEL and continued to say "now you have an ID that says your born in 1992"...... first of all ANGEL, since you think you know everything my ID says im born in 1996.. how do you know my birth year if you aint check my ID????? Second of all, how are you going to sit here and tell me how old i am??! I recently stopped at Mark O's Bar and Grill for lunch on my way to Chicago. Walking in, I was pleased by the warm welcome I received by both the bartender and patrons in the bar. To drink, I had a spicy Bloody Mary that really hit the spot! Mark O's food menu is filled with everything from hot buffalo wings to a big selection of burgers, including "build your own burger". Also on the menu, lake perch and bluegill for fish lovers! I chose to have a mushroom basket as a starter, I received a big portion of tasty fried mushrooms big enough to share with others! For lunch, the bartender recommended one of their most popular burgers, the Mark O's burger. The burger consisted of cheddar cheese, Swiss cheese, sautéed mushrooms, onions, and horseradish mayo, and a side of fries. I'm glad I took the bartenders advice because this was one delicious burger! All in all, my experience at Mark O's Bar and Grill was nice and I would recommend to others!
