We were sad and this company managed to make us happy. We experienced a nasty water leak and our insurer, CSAA, hooked us up with Mark Scott Restoration and Mark Scott Construction. The MS Restoration crew did a fast, thorough job of drying everything out, getting the necessary testing completed, and ultimately pulling in a sub (ERI) to mitigate asbestos found in the old tile mastic per California regulations. The pack-out crew did an incredible job packing and moving everything into storage and back into the house at the end; so good even my husband the former moving company exec was impressed. Once we decided to go with Mark Scott Construction for the necessary repairs, Justin Schmitt managed the project with total professionalism and efficiency. He was responsive and kept us updated throughout - we never waited more than a few hours, and often far less - to hear back from him every time we had a concern. This is AMAZING from a construction manager and greatly reduced our stress level. All the various specialty crews were on time, clean, friendly, and helpful. Yes, there were minor hiccups - what major construction job doesn't have some? - but the really telling part is how they get handled, and I have to say I've never seen better "closers". Justin and his team made everything right, and in some cases proposed terrific solutions we hadn't thought of. Finally, too often we forget the people pulling all that horrible paperwork together - so here's a special shout-out to Cassi Spencer, our Project Engineer, for making sure all the documentation and invoicing was handled in a timely fashion. Terrible service, avoid at all costs. First bid came in at ~$43k and then it took them 9 months to get us a final bid of ~$187k of which our insurance would only pay a percentage. They gave us the runaround, would not return calls but seemed more responsive when sending us their engineering invoice and requesting payment. Turns out they had to use two engineering firms and charged us about $8k which is about $5k more than the nearest bid. During the 9 months we were waiting, my 3 young children were in danger due to the 100 foot tree which damaged our house and deck - still no urgency for this company. Needless to say, we went elsewhere and have had a great experience. Be wary of Mark Scott construction and listen to the vast amount of negative reviews. You have been warned. read more

The crew that was here yesterday to fix my water damaged kitchen was awesome. Due to Covid it was a long wait and some transition between the original person who is no longer there. Brendan Landman came out once the Covid was lifting someone, re-bid the job and sent me a contract. Then Cristino called and came last Friday, July 3rd. He got me on the books for yesterday July 9th and today the 10th. Cristino was a pleasure and awesome to work with as well as his team of wonderful nice men; Enrique, Mario and Gustavo. They did it all in one day and were very accommodating. They was one thing I didn't care for so Cristino was going to send someone out today. If you enjoy being treated poorly, dismissed and blown-off give these guys a try ... If I could give them zero stars I would. Frankly, I have never been treated so poorly by a service-based provider. I was referred to them by another business. I will not mention the other businesses' name as they did nothing wrong (will let them know not to refer people to this horrible company in the future). I contacted Mark Scott Construction over the weekend, leaving them a message of what I was looking for and explaining the background. I asked them to come give me a detailed estimate for repairing several areas of my home that had been remediated due to water damage and neede to be repaired correctly, I indicated I was more than willing to pay for the estimate. I got a call Monday from the intake person who said she would refer it to another woman, Alicia, and she would call me back when she returned from lunch. Several days go by and no call. So I call back, I am told that the file was being walked over to Kaleb, he would call me back that day, no call received. So I call again and again am told I will get a call from this Kaleb person. No call. Finally a week later I get a VM from Alicia which I can barely understand because itis breaking up that they cannot help us because they are not taking claim work. At this point, I am very confused. Our job is not claimed work. So I call and speak to Alicia, at which point she tells me the VM was a mistake and that they are just not interested in helping us or even looking at the job. I indicated I am not looking for the work to begin right away that I need a detailed estimate that I am more than willing to pay for. Her response was that she was told by Kaleb they were not going to help me not even interested in providing a bid for future work. I have never had a contractor be so rude and dismissive and actually tell me they will not give me a bid for future work (even if busy now), especially for a job that is not small, we're looking at $60K+ in damage. I express my displeasure with how I have been treated and that I was referred to this company. To which she said, "you are not even a client". Clearly, this business and the people who work here do not care about how they treat people/prospective clients, etc. and I would recommend steering clear of their services. The contractors were knowledgable, hard working, and good communicators. Vince, the project manager, did a great job coordinating the entire project and was extraordinarily responsive to my questions and comments. my review has to do with the lack of follow up and customer service. I worked with MS Construction because my insurance company had them on a list of preferred vendors. So I went with their recommendation. I should know the type of service I was going to receive when i had to meet their project manager. At first, i thought that the dude would be cool since he was all decked out in Under Armor USA rah rah stuff and a Marine Corps bracelet. Boy was I ever wrong. The impression I received felt like he did not want to be there and totally contradicted the insurance company and his own people that came to take a look at what needed to be done. I had to initiate all of the contact on when the the work teams were to come to my home. I only spoke to him at most twice. The first time was to ask for payment ( even though I distinctly told him to work with the insurance company) the week before. The other time was because I had to escalate his boss because I had not heard from him. In short, I was the project manager not him. The work commenced on May 15th and that work was not officially done until mid July. Now, I understand delays and everything but at most the work should have been completed in a month NOT 3. My entire living room was in the garage for three months. The worst of it all, was that I needed my carpet cleaned but I never received a call to schedule the cleaning until I escalated to his boss. Then when the cleaning did not do the job satisfactorily, then they say it would be at least 6 more weeks until they can schedule the replacement? At that point I have had enough and decided to work with someone else. At least Home Depot will call you..... The work is good and their teams are excellent, I will not deny that. I will add that Cristino was a pleasure to work with. He did everything that the PM did not do. Cristino was the one that did the follow up even though it was not his job. I would work with Cristino anytime. I would like to reiterate that this review has not to do with the work that Cristino and his team did. They are first rate. This solely has to do with the PM and his lack of effort and follow through. Its not like they can say hey, I will paint the room for free or do a service for you since we took so long to get the job done. I am updating my previous review. Had a messy leak at my house in Pinole requiring quite-a-bit of rehab work. It was a complex job and took a while to complete. My son and I had home fire October 2020. Evacuated our home at 3:30 AM in shorts/shoes and barefoot . From that moment forward this would constitute the entirety of our possessions. We chose Mark Scott construction for rebuild of our soon to be gutted home. Covid added a layer to this project that can't be described. MS Construction handled it competently and completely. My project Manger Keith Schaffer and his crew including Mike Pappas made this surreal disaster and all the challenges associated with supply chain , distancing , employees etc. go as efficiently as possible. Keith and his staff along with Julene Nichols in the contents department were not only thorough but understanding and compassionate to this horrific situation. All provided realistic time frames, were responsive to the millions of questions I had with rebuilding and worked professionally with our insurer to insure all we lost ( everything) was logged and replaced or rebuilt to what we once had Hard to describe the impact of loosing your home. I am so pleased with the work in my house by Mark Scott Construction. I had a leak in my kitchen from upstairs and the ceiling and was totally removed and flooring in my living and dining rooms were damaged. Frank Cabaldo, the construction manager made sure all permits were in place and everything went so smoothly. Frank would arrange for his workers to be at my house while I was working for inspections and whatever else needed to be done. He really worked to make sure I didn't have to take off work, which was greatly appreciated. My house looks almost new again! Interesting that they said they could rebuild my entire house in San Rafael (Marin County)for $290,000 and three contractor bids that I got were each $600,000. Needless to say I did not feel very confident in having them do it. I was not very happy with my AAA insurance coverage. read more

Our roof started leaking back in December 2023 and water was coming down our front window in the living room. Our insurance company sent MS Construction to do the repairs. MS Construction did a great job with the repairs. Their crew were courteous, cleaned up after and kept us informed the whole time. They did such a great job that we ended up hiring them to do extra work for us (paint kitchen, family room, bathroom cabinets, trim, install cabinet hardware in master bath). They moved all furnitures and covered them, removed all wall pictures and put it all back after. Doing a kitchen repair and it is a total disaster. The cabinets are not leveled, the walls are not leveled , they drill by mistake into the new cabinets while installing fixtures. The project manager Don Draper is incapable of managing anything, I never get a work schedule. Their workers come when they want. When they arrive, I need to explain them what to do. A very slowly leaking toilet led to water damage in a substantial section of our main bathroom. The whole bathroom (probably the original from when the house was built in Oakland in 1955) had to be redone. We went with Mark Scott because our insurance company recommended them. Once we got past the challenge of waiting for necessary city permits and choosing the materials we wanted (tile, flooring, lighting, etc.), Mark Scott took over and converted our bathroom into a beautiful modern version, which looks great. My main contact at Mark Scott (Cristino) was always quickly responsive to our inquiries and any concerns we had, very patient with one or two key changes we wanted in the middle of the work, and did it all with a very friendly and high level of professionalism. The workers themselves (primarily Francisco) were also very professional and friendly and were committed to making us happy with the finished product. While the urgency of getting this done was circumstantial and not by our choosing, this ended up being a very worthwhile investment which clearly added to the overall value of our primary residence. read more

When it came time to put the house back together, my insurance assigned Mark Scott Construction to my property. Brandon called me on the phone and told me he'd send Lindsey over in the morning to meet me. Since I had quite a distance to commute to work in the morning, Lindsey was very accomodating to my schedule. I was instantly impressed when he automatically took his shoes off as he stepped in my house even though my carpet was trashed from contractors. He told me he's used to it because he was part Asian and we instantly bonded. He was very respectful of my privacy and treated my house like it was his own. MSC ended up re-sheetrocking my garage, living room, retiled an upstairs bathroom, and installed 5 new doors because the bottoms were saturated with water. They also retextured all the walls and then matched the paints over the course of a couple of weeks while I was at work. He is only one of very few people that I trust with a house key and he really took very good care of my house and didn't leave a mess at all. For a few months, we had to talk on the regular (to coordinate such things as carpet installation, signing contracts, and tying up other loose ends) and he was always very prompt in returning my calls, respectful, and always had my best interest in mind. One week I didn't hear from him and was wondering why he didn't return my call. Well, eventually he returned my call and told me his face was nearly ripped off by a dog and had to go thru several rounds of facial reconstructive surgery. Oh My God! Even with this traumatic trajedy, he called me and told me about his ordeal. Now that's a trooper! If you are as meticulous and picky as me, ask to work with Lindsey at MSC. We had a kitchen remodel several years ago... and then this week - our Hood Vent became detached ... and fell - it was quite a scar. Even though it had been a few years, we called our project manager - Vince, and he got back to us right away with information and get someone out to help us out, with putting the Hood Vent back where it belonged. In Sept of 2016, my vacant rental property had a fire. It smoldered in the wall for 6 hours or so before igniting on the exterior. The damage wasn't fun: an entire exterior wall needed replacement as well as support for the floor between the first and second stories. The fire dept had flooded the house, cut holes everywhere, knocked out doors and windows, and destroyed the walls.$91k in damage. My insurance company called out MS Construction for a board-up. I met the estimator onsite at 3am and by 8am my house was at least secured. MS handled everything from day 1. They engaged my insurance company, handled permitting, took care of financing with my mortgage company, the works. All I had to do was sit back and watch. I'd always heard horror stories about people dealing with contractors and can say that MS didn't live up to that stereotype. While there were a couple times I was frustrated, any time I expressed frustration, my complaints were quickly dealt with. You can't ask for more than that. read more

It was covered by AAA insurance (and they should have done better also). Where do I start? The floors we had when we purchased our home was old, outdated, and down right ugly. Mark Construction came to our home and delivered samples of the flooring they had and took measurements right away! These guys packed up our whole entire two-story home so nicely while also keeping our stuff organized and neat! I am really at a lost for words how beautifully they executed our home! The biggest mistake I made was hiring Mark Scott Construction to do the work on an insurance claim. They were on a list my insurance company has as perfered contractors to work with. All I can say is they use subs that are no where near craftsman quality to maximize their profits my best guess. My small kitchen took 4 months from start of construction, From time midigation company to finish - 7 months. My cabinets had to be pulled twice cuz they put in wrong size. One of those times they had to remove the quartz counter tops because counters were wrong sizes. Got everything in and you couldnt even open the dishwadher cuz it hit the fridge. The job was so mismanaged and use of people to work without a clue of what they are doing. Oh then my quartz seems don't match. One side noticeable darker shade. They refuse to fix it.
