We used Venga Paella for a birthday party and had a great experience. Eduardo was very prompt in responses and we were able to lock in a date and menu. I loved how they were so flexible in planning. You can choose to have the paella cooked on site or cooked off site and delivered. You can also pick multiple flavors in increments of 5 person servings, which gave us a lot of flexibility in accommodating multiple tastes. They offer tapas and desserts as well, although we skipped both. They just need to add drinks! They also allowed changes and cancellations up until 5 days of the event, which is so generous compared to a lot of other food vendors. We ended up going with cooked on site. Jimmy arrived on time and started prepping everything before our guests arrived. He was completely self-sufficient in his set up (except for water - we didn't have a water source!). We got the traditional (prawns, calamari, clams, mussels, chicken), all meat (chicken, pork ribs, chorizo, green olives, artichokes), and vegetarian (seasonal veggies, cremini mushrooms). Jimmy even made sure to confirm with me if it was okay to offer the vegetarian to everyone or whether that needed to be set aside for people who were specifically vegetarian. I also loved that they included mixed greens with the paella free of charge. It helps to have some veggies as a nice, light addition to the paella. After everyone looked like they were about done eating, he packed up all his stuff, cleaned up the area, and put the leftovers inside for us. We had Venga come cook on-site for my Mom's 75th birthday celebration. They were SO easy to communicate and coordinate with; showed up right on time and had everything set-up and ready to go in no time. Chef Jimmy was a joy to have, and cooked an INCREDIBLE meal for us: we got the traditional paella & the chicken/chorizo paella, bacon wrapped dates, artichoke croquettes and empanadas for tapas. The food was to die for. I don't think anyone left the buffet table for a full hour, we were so busy shoving our faces. The paella was also incredible and we had plenty leftover for our guests to take a to-go box home. We decided on Paella for Mother's Day and I remembered going to a great fundraiser twice in the past at Venga Paella in Oakland. At the fundraiser we partied inside and would go outside periodically to watch them start with an empty five foot diameter paella pan. Gradually they cooked the ingredients in the pan over the next hour or so. Seafood, chicken, squid, clams, shrimp, and mussels, garlic, peppers, veggies, saffron and delicious rice. For Mother's Day we ordered ahead and right on time 24 hours later they delivered seafood paella with chicken for five people to our front door in the authentic paella pan. The food was delicious and reminded me of the paella we had last year in Spain. Next day they picked up the pan. I had the most amazing paella from Venga Paella at Donkey & Goat Winery in Berkeley where they had 3 huge paellas pans a blaze as the summer sun shone down. I ate two plates by myself so I think I got a good feel for the flavor, texture and seasoning. Man, talk about delicious! Packed with the freshest seafood, sausage, meats and vegetables, cooked perfectly in broth and then finished with a tiny bit of oil that probably had angel tear drops in it, I was in heaven! Venga Paella doesn't have a store so I will absolutely consider them for a catered event. How cool would it be to have a chef show up at your house with a GIANT paella pan and cook for your guests? Paella (and they have all kinds) plus a gorgeous salad and bread will set you back about $20/person. It's not cheap but I've worked with many a catering company and $20/person for dinner is a pretty great price point! I overheard someone asking the vendor where they're from and the man replied "Valencia". Well, Valencia is well-known for their style of paella, so I had to try some.
