This was my husband's and my virgin voyage into a Market of Choice location as it was just down the street from our hotel in Eugene. I had read mixed reviews for Market of Choice, a small chain of grocery stores in Oregon, and have to say we were pleasantly surprised by what we found at this location. It seemed to us sort of like what one might get were they to do a mash up of something like a Safeway and a Whole Foods. There were a lot more general, national brand name items than we expected to find at a market with a reputation for being something of a "natural" focus...things you'd never find in a Whole Foods aisle. Not brands we buy, but different strokes for different folks and we realize some shoppers choose the big national labels for many reasons. But there were also enough natural food items and more regional food items (aka "locally sourced") to keep shoppers like us interested. Maybe that's the "...of Choice" thing in the name of the store? ;-) We also thought the take away prepared foods section had some nice selections and so did the bakery...although we weren't in the market to buy anything at either. The produce department looked good, although much smaller than we'd expect it to be for a store of this size...maybe that's a factor of this being a "closer to campus" store and "on the main drag" store than a suburban neighborhood store? My hubby also thought the wine department, a pretty good sized section for the size of the store, had lots of interesting wines across the spectrum of domestic and imported and at good price points too. I liked the abundance of local and "local-ish" bulk coffee beans to choose from. Overall, were we at another time in a place where our options were big markets only for grocery shopping and Market of Choice was one of the options, based on the virgin voyage experience on Franklin Street in Eugene, we'd say "that felt good - let's do it again".

Wedding Cake Review. Market of Choice made my wedding cakes, and everyone loved them. They created 6 cakes for us, which was much cheaper than a traditional tiered cake. Plus, we got 6 different flavors. I ordered plenty for leftovers, but the cake was eaten up within a few minutes at the wedding. I didn't even get any, but everyone raved. Best part- my super health-foodie mother-in-law LOVED them and had a tiny slice of each one! Ordering was easy, and the tasting session was fun. We tasted at the MOC in Corvallis, but ordered the cakes from the one on Franklin in Eugene because that was close to our wedding venue. Friends picked them up on the way to the wedding, no problems. Check out my photo of the beautiful cakes!

This location now has a poke bar!!! And it's only $14.99 a pound plus you get to completely customize your bowl!!

The Market of choice on Franklin Blvd has a poke bar. You can completely customize your poke bowls. When I went there the options were: 2 types of tuna, salmon, shrimp, seaweed salad, octopus salad, rice, and mango. Really good all the pieces were uniform and really fresh. Its only $14.99 a pound. In my opinion this is the best value in town for quick poke fix the only problem at this location is parking.

Not as fancy or should I say as well put together as some of the others that I have been to, but still one of the nicest markets in town.

I go there every Friday to get my weekly dose of healthy fish and really never ever even gave consideration to the idea that it might be farm raised. But then I looked at the placard today and saw the fine print that says they sell farm raised salmon. Shame on them. I go there every Friday and get salmon from the deli. I will not be doing that again.

Bakery issue... We ordered a cake for my son's birthday. I…read morehad ordered cakes through them at this location over the years maybe 10 times. They're expensive so I generally save ordering from Market of Choice for a special birthday... not just an average one. It was $60 and it looked BEAUTIFUL. My first indication that it wasn't going to be all that good was the fact that while cutting it after singing happy birthday, the frosting was coming up in chunks, not staying flat on the cake. It was really odd... but the reason it did that was that their butter cream or fondant was thick as can be... in fact, there was much more chunky frosting on the cake than actual CAKE. And the frosting, due to its thickness, was coming away from the cake in slabs. Several of the kids (and my family, too) just ate the cake from the center and left the other half of the piece that was on their plate alone- the "frosting". The KIDS said the frosting was too thick and too sugary. Yes, the kids. Us adults had issues with it, too... and it was in the center, as well, between the 2 layers, which made them separate in a weird way, too. The cake, except for the bottom 1/3 of the lower layer, was ok. The bottom was either overcooked or it was freezer burned from being a frozen layer of cake and used when it was needed... and it was hard and darker (darker yellow that the rest of the white cake layer)... and so it wasn't edible, either. It looked amazing. But the fact that it was supposed to be edible food was problematic. Normally, I'd not say anything but a few of the ones we'd gotten from them over the years had the same frosting issue except that it was the fact that the frosting was SO MUCH of the overall cake, that it was ridiculous what was paid for it... and, again, it was THICK, LIKE A MASSIVE BLANKET molded over the soft layer cake inside. Anyhow... not a good bargain at $60. That will be our last Market of Choice Bakery cake.
