I discovered this store by just driving by and it catching my eye, and I'm really glad it did! The store itself is fine, but what I really love is the deli. I've used the deli three times and really enjoyed it every time, and the service has been super friendly. My last meal was BBQ tofu and squash filled ravioli, which made for a great lunch. I live by Capella Market and have been curious to try it. Was driving by today and decided to pop in. I was expecting an Italian grocery store but it was more health foods/artisan goods. Lots of local products, huge bulk section, organic produce, etc. In the back there was an Italian deli area with prepared foods. Huge meat counter that looked very nice and high quality. They definitely have unique items like tinned fish and quail eggs to name a few that you can't find at all grocery stores. The woman who checked me out was extremely friendly. Nice little store! Like ICE, the specifics of my alleged offenses were never provided. They disliked that all I did was return cans and bottles for credit, their requirement under Oregon law!. Capella's is one of my favorite places to shop, particularly on Wednesday or Sunday when I can get a 10% senior discount. Recently, after bagging up my groceries and getting things in the car and arriving home, I realized I had forgotten a bottle of wine that I had purchased. I called them immediately and they, indeed, had found the wine and were going to hold it for me whenever I should chance to return to the store to pick it up. It was several days before I returned, and the bottle of wine was safely held for me with my name on it. I so appreciated that. And the wine was Pretty good as well! One of the very best things at Capella's is their meat and fish selection. Prices are comparable and often lower than other markets. I must admit, their porterhouse steak is better than a well-known local meat market nearby. It is priced less as well. (No offense to vegetarians). Same goes for coffee prices as compared to a nearby market. We're talking $2 a pound less! And for a coffee drinker, that adds up for a big savings. Their organic options abound. This is a sweet little market. It is very close to where we live, so we can stop-by on our way home and grab a thing or two. But, really great selection of micro-local products. One of my favorite things to grab is the raviolis from Hideaway Bakery in the Frozen aisle! You can also buy their bread, or Metropol Bakery! Even though Metropol is across the street, sometimes it is nice to not make another stop- and just get a bunch of things at once. Overall, I love the whole design of the market and the choice of products. I also like their bulk product selection. I've been to several other small-local markets in Eugene and I haven't found a place that you can fill out own container of Body Wash before. Even at a place marketed as a specific "package free" store did not have body wash available, so I'm excited about this find. In addition Capella Market has a lot of other things like dishwasher liquid, and other things that you can refill without a package. And, overall the Service at the market is friendly without being in-your-face- and overly assertive. I really appreciate the space and I love the treasures I find there! read more

They had new management a year or so ago. Since then the quality of foods (especially veggies) has gone downhill, items go out of stock (even basics such as milk!), service in non-existant, the ambiance is stale (like much of the bread), staff hyped up and rude. Customers are treated as inconveniences. My wife and I no longer shop at Capella. There are plenty of better markets in Eugene. read more

As my mom likes to remind me, I been shopping here since I was in utero, so I've been a lifelong (and then some) fan of this place. It's definitely my favorite natural foods store in Eugene.. First, I appreciate the size--it's big enough to carry a bit of everything, but small enough that it doesn't feel overwhelming. Their produce is some of the best in town. The folks at their meat/seafood counter are always friendly and knowledgeable and they carry great quality, fresh meats and seafood. The wine selection is great, too, and their wine buyer is always happy to answer questions and make recommendations. I like that they cary a variety of natural products and some more mainstream brands, too. Somehow they manage to keep their prices reasonable, too. There are some staff who have worked there for 30+ years. I don't buy all my groceries here but when I want some good-quality items, I come here! read more

Really nice market for gourmet-ish items you may not find other places in town. Excellent meat / butcher selections. The fish didn't look too appealing so we passed on that. The fresh produce along with organic food options make this place stand out. Also worth a mention are the nice selection of wine at fair prices - they have staff picks on some which is very helpful. The only down side for us were the prices on most things - marked up pretty high. Understandably, you are paying more to support a local, small business with great customer service so we will be back - but only for a few items that we couldn't find in other places. I like how it's open late -not too late- but late enough to miss the rush. The produce is great, the buy from bulk items are awesome, and the sandwiches are bomb. I really like customizing my sandwich and then eating it with delight. I could careless about buying local, I just like going to Capellas because it's small and has everything I need. I'm not fond of big grocery stores because I get lost and then confused as to which brand to buy. Capellas limits my options which is great because I get my grocery shopping done much faster. The market itself is small too so there isn't much ground to cover for me. I'm a fan of their meat selection. Though I am a little disappointed that the cashier scanned my 1/2 lb of lamb twice. I was too lazy to drive back to get my refund, maybe next time I hit Capellas up I'll get my 9$ back! Oh one last note: don't get run over in the parking lot! Went looking for local raw unfiltered honey. A local Suggested I go to this market. I love exploring and supporting the local markets! I found some organic produce a bit higher than the commercial supermarkets. However, the plus side is, I took home the local Oregon Blackberry honey! Unbelievably delicious! The texture is like liquid gold, and the flavor is distinct and smooth. An elderly local customer was filling up a bottle of the local organic extra virgin oil, she suggest I try that next. This is a wonderful grocery store! It is organic and natural without looking the part. It manages to maintain cleanliness, space, and brightness unlike some of the organic markets in the area. Great meat selection and they have wonderful produce and prepared foods as well! They have a great selection of sausages made from different kinds of meats mixed with varying ingredients, amazing! They also have breads from several different bakeries in the area, which is nice because you can kind of compare all of them... I moved to this neighborhood with my family of four a few months ago. I had a chance to get into this store today and thought I might find a new and interesting place to grocery shop. I came across two managers. One was poring over his cell phone and telling the other how he could increase their profits. I guess my presence bothered him and he very rudely told me I was in the wrong section of the store for what I was looking for. When I asked where the right section was he flat-out ignored me and kept talking about their profits. I was astounded. The other manager was super friendly and pointed me in the right direction, but that didn't make up for profit guy's brazen assholery. I will definitely not be setting foot in this place again. Cheaper, on average than Market of Choice, and much better produce. *Capella's Deli Sandwiches are the best made-to-order sandwiches in South Eugene, if not the entire town. Consistently delectable and expertly assembled, this is the best deal I've found. $6.49 for a whole sandwich, chips and a pickle. The variety of PC, the produce of Sundance (or very nearly so), the prices of FM, and a knowledge that is unmatched. That's what we've got in Capella, folks. I don't know about you, but I REALLY missed Oasis when Wild Oats took over. I finally, tentatively, ventured back in to the store on a trip home (right when it had become "Capella"), and I was hooked. First of all--it's cheaper than MoC! Perhaps not on everything, for instance, OJ, but on everything else I've compared Capella's charges less. Second, people here know their food! And their vitamins! and their meat! They will order anything that's not in stock, and are always receptive to feedback. Next, they buy local. We know some farmers who have benefited from Capella's gracious buyers who have a tenacity for sourcing local. Finally, it's quiet here. I get a little bit freaked out going to MoC (or the Prius parking lot, as my friend calls it) on a weekend. But Capella's has a zen-like quality that makes your shopping experience feel like a real treat. So, if you're thinking of switching your shopping habits now...make sure to help Capella's live up to this part of the review. read more

Sure, there are better grocery stores out there somewhere. But I'll tell you why I'm giving it 5 stars: Their selections for special diets (read: gluten free and dairy free) is THE BEST I've seen anywhere. When I shop there, I don't actually feel like my diet is anything out of the ordinary. They put little blue dots on all the price tags if an item is gluten free, and it is amazing/easy. They even carry my new favorite, dairy free chocolate chips. They carry frozen gluten free waffles that were pretty good, as well as lots of other naughty processed gluten free foods. I just appreciate the fact that it's there in case i want it. Thanks, Capella's for not making me feel deprived. Their selection of special diet items is definitely better than market of choice, kiva, and sundance combined. The only thing I haven't seen there that I'd really love is locally baked fresh gluten free bread. Yes, I do kind of drop a lot of money when I shop there, but for me it's worth it. One of my favorite little groceries in town. The highlights for me are the fresh fruit and veggies. It's also great to stop in for a cold drink (good beer sales and a good selection of teas, etc) or a quick snack from the deli. If you're on your way home from work kinda late, they tend to be quite willing to barter on the price of the deli items that they haven't sold. Yum! Capella is an awesome grocery store. They cater to all genre's of eating, responsibly. They by far have the most gluten-free options of any grocer in Eugene. They also have awesome produce section, an awesome bulk section, and an awesome deli. If you eyeball anything in the deli, the person behind the counter will ask if you want a taste, and give you quite a large portion! My girlfriend went up to the counter and asked for 2 pieced of buffalo jerky, and the person behind the counter asked if we tried it before, we said no, and he said "here, have a sample" and gave us our 2 pieces for free! Totally awesome!! Another time we were there my buddy went to the coffee counter and asked for a cup, and they only had the dreggs of the carafe left, so they gave him what they have for free!! 90% of the time they have great customer service, but there is one particular cashier who is old and grumpy... who I avoid at all costs. She made a fuss (on my birthday) about how my driver's licenses' toner was smeared and refused to sell me a beer.... even-though she knew I was a regular and had sold me beer before. Capella's market is a great source for natural foods and meats. They make these incredible sausages there that are handmade and organic. I highly recommend the lamb sausage. I've converted non lamb eaters on those! They have a nice variety of items, housewares, bulk items, and the normal grocery staples. Also have a nice wine sections with varieties available in the cooler, chilled and ready to take home. Prices are competitive with Market of choice which is down the street. I believe the workers there have a vested interest in the business, which is nice. Someone stated that the workers weren't so enthusiastic when they were there. I haven't had that experience. What is great about Capella's market is that they cater to all diets and dietary needs and they don't charge as much of an arm and a leg as other 'natural' grocers in town do. They have a great produce section with organic and conventional produce. The bulk section is awesome and they have the best supermarket meat counter in town. The house-made sausages they sell are super tasty. The Deli has some yummy goodies and a little known secret is the deli sandwiches they are so good. When you order your sandwich get the boxed lunch option, it is such a great deal. The health and beauty aisles have a wonderful selection of vitamins and supplements also tinctures and all of your soap/lotion/shampoos etc needs. A couple of things: the parking lot can, sometimes, be a bit tricky as in cars backing out without looking if anyone is coming (just be alert and patient, and you should be fine). Also, if you can, bring your own containers for the bulk items as they charge you for the plastic tubs (I'm referring to when you purchase bulk cooking oil or honey, that sort of thing not shampoo/soap containers....Capella's is the only store I have encountered in Eugene that charges for their bulk foods tubs) read more

Need to just run to the store for a couple of items? This is the place. Easy parking, small store with everything you need and no stupid loyalty card to waste your time. I buy all my meat here and most of my produce. Great selection of buffalo, pork and chicken. For all other items, if you're like me and never buy things made by the likes of General Mills, Kellogg or Kraft than you won't be missing anything. Checkout is always quick. This store has many over priced items. There's not a whole lot that's different than what you'll find at larger stores. Their dozen eggs are a few dollars above that of Market of Choice, which is just across the street about a block away. I bought a bunch of small organic apples that were rotten in the center. I had to throw out most of them. Their hot food counter was also over priced. For ~ $40, I got one dozen brown eggs (non-organic,) six tiny apples, a small box of hot food enough for one person, and a small bottle of fish oil capsules. I gave this place two stars and not one star because the person who served me at the hot food bar was pleasant. I wouldn't return unless there is a need for vitamins. I had a simple question regarding an organic cookie mix and the manager (Bab??) was incredibly rude and unhelpful. The checkers seemed embarrassed by her behavior. This is the second time I have observed the manager treating customers poorly....it is a small store that I very much want to like the place, however, there are far too many other good paces to shop in Eugene (Sundance, Kiva, Natural Grocers, etc...)...I recommend that the manager either learn how to be a bit more kind....or?? This is such a great little markets in Eugene. They always have the freshest produce and great wine selection. Their deli is spectacular, and the staff are super friendly. We love their hummus and salsa's. One of the cashiers is always so nice and offers my son a healthy treat (but not before confirming with me or my wife). I love the organic and natural foods that are always fresh and sold in various quantities.
