Their tea is AWESOME! I've tried their yerba matte, Orange Spice, Regular Orange and Banana Zing and have yet to find one that is't a cup full of deliciousness. To review the ones I've had... 6/17/2010 Orange Spice: It's their house special, and a very popular favorite. It reminds me of the days of my youth when I'd munch on Atomic Fireballs in the back seat of my family's Buick on long car trips to grandmas. Just without the burning, but with the cinnamony sweetness. Yerba Matte: It's a kick for your mornings. Nutty and smooth with a light almost sweet smell to round off the flavor. Makes me wish I had a traditional gourd to drink it from! Orange: Tastiness! Very similar to their trademark Orange Spice tea, but wholey distinct on it's own. This black tea will provide a strong morning kick with a pleasant infusion of orange. Banana Zing: If you've ever been to the mid-west, or better yet grown up there this will immediately take you back, just without all the drawbacks of an airline ticket. It's liquid gold banana bread in a cup! If this were featured on Willy Wonka, I'd be a large walking loaf of steaming fresh banana bread right now. It's an excellent tea for any chilly morning. :-) 6/25/2010 Mandarin Pearls This tea takes a bit of time to steep. This can be bad or good depending on your view. If you want the tea IMMEDIATELY and have no patience ... well... you shouldn't be drinking tea, and you probably won't like this one as much either. But allowing the pearls to unfurl in your steeper while you sip in quite interesting. The flavor changes and blooms over time into a surprisingly fruity tea. I personally will be using these pearls in a blend with an English black as they tend to add more flavor than caffeine kick, but it's a very light tea. This place will DEFINITELY be my favorite tea-spot as not only is the quality beyond belief, the prices are extremely reasonable. It's WELL WORTH a spin by the market! read more

Visited Market Spice on the Savor Seattle food tour. I learned that this store is Pike Place's oldest store, 100 years old! Love the historical content of this place. Market spice offers a butt load of different spices, teas, and herbs. Everything is fresh and in a jar for you to smell (taste test). The beauty of them having their products in a jar is that the contents will never go bad since the product is being used up so quickly. Other places buy their products in bulk so it can take up to 2 years for them to get to the bottom of the barrel. Market spice, always has fresh products. (I learned all this from the savor Seattle tour). Everyone there knows the products and will gladly help if you need any assistance. They offer samples of their best selling tea, cinnamon-orange tea. it smells good in there! read more

First time visiting Seattle for a conference, and of course had to visit Pike's Place Market, which is a 10 minute walk from the convention center. The wall of tea jars was enough to draw me towards this little shop. They have a huge selection of loose leaf tea and coffee flavors, not to mention another wall of every spice you'll ever need to please an array of culinary tastes. This is your one-stop shop for everything you need to make a perfect cup of tea. I stocked up and bought nearly a sample of every flavor, including lychee-rose, peach- coconut, earl green and black currant. There is a large variety of herbal tea selections as well. They even let you open the jars and take a whiff so you know exactly what you're getting. They weigh the sample of tea for you and you can choose anywhere between one-half to four ounces at a time. If tea is not your thing, they also have a variety of coffee bean flavors that they can grind for you based on how you will be brewing them later. I bought the amaretto coffee beans, and had them grind it for use in a French press... so good! The employees are very informative and friendly, not to mention artistic -evidenced by the artwork on each individual jar. Coffee and tea are fantastic, but don't rely on the Pike location to get what you need. Order online instead. Store is extremely cramped, their credit card machine keeps going down (and I don't dare use an ATM at Pike Place), and as of October 2022, they're one of the last places in Seattle to require you to wear a mask in the store, which is more an irritant than anything else, but they have so many obstacles in place at any moment to discourage you from shopping in-person. It's a poignant example of why retail is dying in favor of online shopping, which is extremely sad for a location like this. read more

I've visited this place only once back in 2016 but keep ordering teas online from them since then (first while living in CA, then moved to MA, still ordering). Cannot beat price/quality ratio! Had a glitch with online order around Christmas time, and did a double order (imagine 2x8lb of tea) by accident. Marketspice was willing to take back and reimburse most of teas promptly! I was visiting Seattle for a business trip and made a point to visit Market Spice after a local friend's recommendation. I'm glad I stopped because this place is awesome! There are two whole walls of spices, tea, and coffee - all at great prices. I bought 2 oz of spices, 4 oz of coffee, and 7 oz of tea for $20 even! There were so many different types of teas that all sounded great, so it was hard to pick just a few to try I purchased a wide variety of teas and spices, and all of them have been great so far. MarketSpice is a unique little shop inside the Pike Place Market. We visited here during a food tour and it was overwhelming the amount of spices they have available. I'm more of a simple and pure kind of girl when it comes to spices so some of their specialty teas were super overpowering to me. However you can get some really high quality stuff in there and their Madagascar vanilla beans looked amazing! Definitely a place to stop by and take a look around. read more

This place is a tea-lover's haven. The good stuff is loose-leaf here, but they do carry a few brands of tea bags. They have pre-packed bags of their most popular teas in the back, if you want to skip the line to measure and bag the teas. After lots of tea sniffing, I ended up getting some moroccan mint and chocolate mint. The chocolate mint is amazing, it tastes like a peppermint hot chocolate, except lighter and very refreshing. If you're really into spices, fresh and large varieties of coffees, and teas, you HAVE to come here. I wanted to get my dad some coffee here, but I'm not nearly a coffee snob, and didn't know how to narrow down the 30+ types of coffee beans they had there. There's a whole range of spices you can get by the bag. And the variety of teas are just phenomenal. They offer samples of their signature tea, their orange-cinnamon tea. It's pure perfection. I ended up buying a bunch of boxes of the tea bags. It's a perfect citrus, sweetness, with the kick of cinnamon. It is a caffeinated black tea, though... Although they do have a decaf version. Thank God they sell it online, even if I have to pay for shipping. That's how good the tea is! read more

If you like tea .. especially loose leaf tea .. this is an excellent place to stop when in Seattle's Pike Place Market. Their signature tea, the cinnamon orange blend, is very good and reminds me of the sweet and spicy tea from Good Earth. The shop is a tight fit when crowded, which is probably always. Be careful if you have a backpack on or large bags, it's easy to knock stuff (or people) as you squeeze through. I could have spend quite a bit of time there smelling all the different blends of tea. If you have a craving for something specific, talk to one of the staffers. If you tell them what kind of taste profile you're looking for, they will make excellent suggestions. (BTW, if you guys ever make the caramel-creme flavor I suggested, I'd love to know so I can order some.) One last thing .. since I was in Seattle for a very short work visit, I didn't have a lot of suitcase space for everything I would have liked to have purchased. Next door there is a shop that sells honey. The cashier is rarely busy, which means you can pick up what you need and head on out. They do samples, which means you can try the amazing orange cinnamon tea for yourself. They do others, but this is the one to get. The bad things - it's cramped. Really cramped. Six people in the shop feels over-crowded. It's location is close to the main entrance of Pike Market, which makes getting in and out easy, but you still have to go through Pike Market, which can be frustrating during tourist season. read more

The orange cinnamon tea is to die for. When you try it in the store it's not as flavorful as if you were to increase the tea to water ratio at home. Somehow it's subtly sweet without any unnatural flavors, super orangey (which I love) and deliciously cinnamony without being overpowering. I bought the biggest jar they had and lugged it home just in time for afternoon tea. They have a wide array of different teas ranging from spicy to sweet and tons of spices that are super affordable. Ended up here after a recommendation from a barista at a tea place (tearista?) on 1st Avenue. The tea place did sell tea but did not carry yerba maté. I asked the gentleman where I could possibly find such tea and he told me to try Market Spice "next to where they throw the fish" and so I did. There is a pretty decent selection of teas but this trip I skipped right to the point because I had been craving yerba maté for some time and since I was in the neighborhood picking up salmon anyway I thought I'd stop by and get some. Where to begin? Back in the day, when I was new to Seattle, I thought MarketSpice was a tea shop. That was before I went to the store. Yeah, I used to buy the tea at Bartell's and such and enjoyed many of the citrus flavors. I also gave them to people as gifts all the time. I love white tea - iced during the summer. The peaches and coconut hits the spot! Fast forward. MarketSpice is more than a tea shop. Much more. I love browsing around the shop, although I do wish it were a bit bigger (I have personal space issues). Between locals and tourists, the place always seems to be fairly brisk business. MarketSpice is one of those gems at Pike that you may miss around the corner. Coffee is also sold here. I must admit that I don't partake in that form of caffeinated goodness. However, it smells fantastic! Spices! I'm not sure that I've ever been able to hold the scope of how many spices are sold here. The jars on the wall is a sight to behold. I love the labels on them and have been known to stare at them, even when not buying anything. Need aleppo chili pepper? Done. Hot mustard powder? One of my faves. Done and done. Peppercorns? Sure. What color? Oh, and the salt! What did we ever do before we had so many salt choices? Growing up in my house, all we had was Morton's, Kosher, and Hawaiian Alae salt. They have a great selection here. I'm not sure why anyone would pay for spices in a grocery store unless it was an emergency. I've been there. I've also been irritated by paying $10 for a tiny jar of subpar spice. I do like bulk better but don't get to MarketSpice as often as I would like. read more

Another place that I wish we have in Portland, OR. I love Market Spice. You can buy spices per ounce. So if you are not sure you will like it, you wont' blow your money away. I love the spices that I got for marinating steak. I marinated my steak with this, dry rub style. It was very tasty and I could taste all spices on it. Thanks to Market Spice, I'm pretty much hook with this dry rub spices. I will get tons of it when I go back to Seattle next time. Besides that spices, I also got about four other two ounces bags of spices. All of that only cost me about $10. It was very reasonable considering the kind of spices that I got and they will last for a while. My next trip to Seattle, I will bring my spice bottles and ask them to fill those up for me with my favorite spices. I truly heart this shop. read more

A nice little side trip to take while walking though the Market. You walk in and are greeted with a warm hello, can I help you find something or a HOT sample for their signature tea. Now I don't care too much for their tea but like at Aveda I always take a sample and always burn my tongue. What is it with tea samples being served scorching hot? Once my tongue is scorched I realize why I don't normally drink hot tea and stick to iced tea I like my tongue too much. So I don't go here for the tea, tea accessories yes but the actual teas not so much. What I love coming in here for are their spices. They have a wall of spices that make the wannabe chef in me come out. The great thing is when a recipe calls for some obscure spice/dried herb in a small amount you can come in here and buy it in a small amount instead of jar at the grocery store which you end up tossing out in a year when it's still almost completely full because you've only used it a few times. Just a warning this store is not suitable for children, strollers or people carrying big bags it's tiny and jammed packed and you must watch every move because more than likely, well if you're like me, you'll probably knock something off a shelf or table or counter, thankfully I've only knocked over boxes of teas nothing breakable. What's not to love? Great teas, delicious coffee (Hatian Bleu Voodoo!!), and tons of spices, spice mixes, and small gifl items that are generally in the tea and coffee realm. The employees have been great helping me find what I need and are pretty awesome people, collectively. The only thing about Market Spice is, it's in the market so it can be hard to wade through the throng of tourists waiting to get the perfect picture of a fish flying through the air. Awesome spice shop, as everyone has noted. The line gets long and the impulse buys are many, but this is more of a testament to the awesomeness of the place rather than a complaint. If they have time, they are good with the recommendations and advice. Decent selection of nice salts, which are a very cheap way to subtly improve the flavors of things. I love my smoked salts, Hawaiian salts, seasoned salts, sea salts... I seem to be missing out on the tea thing downstairs, but that is only because I have a tea collector in house and umpteen boxes/bags of tea to get through. My nearest spice shop now (in Olympia) has the time to measure and chat, so there are no minimum amounts. Market Spice has minimum buys (usually 1 oz of a pure spice, 2 oz of spice blends), which keeps them from wasting their time but often leads you to have too much of a light spice (1/2 oz of bay leaves is a LOT). Also leads you to have 1 oz minus 1/4 teaspoon bags of spices all over the place. read more

Market Spice is one of my favorite shops in Pike Place Market. The smells are simply intoxicating. For any tea or spice lover, this is the place to wander. They greet you with a lovely table of free samples, usually a yummy blend of ice tea. They have a wide variety of loose tea and spices as well as packaged ones. And of course all the accessories for tea drinking. When I'm in a rush I'll usually just grab the prepacked teas I love. The raspberry tea is wonderful and I'm a huge fan of their red rooibos blend. And of course, all their teas can be hot or cold and still have a robust flavor. Their loose teas are also quite lovely. Their market chai is a perfect balance of spices. I do sometimes splurge on their dip mixes too! Also, they sell a few cute souvenirs. I actually love their Seattle rain candle, it's made with Seattle rain! It has a fresh scent and has always been a great gift. And I always buy one for myself. The staff are friendly despite having to deal with droves of tourists, which I appreciate. The downsides are that this is place is always packed since they are close to the fish throwers. And the isles are very small. But it's all worth venturing through the crowd! read more

The pre-mixed teas are great, and I make an effort to pick up at least a few different things every time I visit Seattle. Unfortunately, the people who work there are always moody and sometimes rude (both at the register and behind the counter). The Market Spice House Green Tea Blend = Crack Not only am I hooked on this stuff but I've managed to convert untold thousands across the world on it. Well.. Perhaps not "thousands".. But at least three people I can think of. And perhaps not "across the world" but at least as far as Boston. Which is sort of like another world anyways. I could waste untold kilobytes of precious bandwidth discussing just how awesome their teas are (Their House Green Tea and their Cranberry Mint Roobius are two of my favorites), but you simply have to try them for yourselves. Loose leaf teas are just awesome - much better than the bagged stuff - and this place has a killer selection. I drink at least a pot a day. Aside from teas, though, their bulk spice selection is not only diverse but extremely reasonable. I am constantly just filling up my spice jars with everything from cumin to cinnamon to oregano to hickory smoked salt (!!) from Market Spice. Plus they've got harder to find spices and herbs when you're looking to make, for example, a big bowl of Pho! I can't say enough good things about this place. If you're looking for tea or spices or, like me, you're just "spicy", haul your bulky butt over to Market Spice and tell 'em I sent you. Actually.. You may not want to do that. I can't imagine how this place gets good reviews. I understand, tea shops are dope. I love places like this with jars of natural teas and herbs. This place however is the only one I know of that seems to specialize in chemical stank teas. For decades this place has been stinking up Pike Place Market with it's foul chemical smell from the nasty stuff they concoct. How they have remained in business all these years is beyond me. I like this store. It had all the spices I needed when I was making Moroccan food. On top of that, the employees were really nice and knowledgeable -- they knew exactly where every single item is in the store. As well, they weren't afraid to tell you where to go in the market if they didn't have what you were looking for, which is wonderfully helpful of them. For when you need a random spice or only need a small amount and don't want to buy a whole bottle. Also carry coffee beans. The staff has always been beyond helpful! This ain't Lipton's that's for sure! Market Spice has a myriad of teas and you can buy by the ounce. They can scoop an ounce into a little baggy and you can take it home to try it. How fabulous is that? It's the best thing to do for non-commital tea drinkers.... you know what I mean. My taste buds go into over-drive when I see John sorting through our spice rack. It means that Market Spice is in our immediate future and I begin to wonder, Will he be buying delicate spices to create a fine French feast? Or maybe it will be the bbq mix - fantastic for grilled meats and oven roasted fare with a kick. Or, it could be their crab boil combo if he's feeling like battling an exoskeleton. Mmmm Market Spice. Whatever the spice, it is dependably fresh, flavorful, and CHEAP since you can buy only what you need. And, unlike other stores that carry "bulk" spices, Market Spice has never been out of that one hard to find ingredient. As other reviewers have noted, Market Spice not only offers every spice on the planet, they also have an excellent selection of coffee beans and teas, including the exclusive Jamaican Blue Mountain coffee beans. Another fun perk is the bulk sugars in large grains and bright colors, which we've used to rim cocktail glasses at parties and others have mentioned they use for baking. Each visit introduces me to a new ingredient, and even if it's not one we'd use, I learn something about food and cooking. PS - hate crowds? Go early in the day and beat the tourists. I have been trying to think of reasons to avoid a 5 star review here, since Anita L. has told me that 5 stars is deserved by only a VERY select few. However, Market Spice is an amazing experience, and is priced very well. Not to mention their amazing selection of spices AND teas. The staff is amazing and very willing to help. I purchased 15 different bags of spices/teas. All are weighed and packaged by hand, and the staff didn't even seem to mind. What service! I wish there could be a place like this in Orange County...Seattle you are so lucky! Will update this review based on how spices affect my indian dishes that I purchased them for. I have a feeling the 5 star rating will remain, but we'll see. I purchased ground cumin, spicy paprika (which is a mix of cayenne and paprika, nice!), ground corriander, whole cloves and a few types of tea, one of which is "gunpowder" green tea. Yes- it is beautiful and smells great and is overpriced and the tourists love to sample it and mill around in a daze blowing on their 3 ounce cup of boiling hot... whatever. Let's talk about what Market Spice is really good for... the spices! Not only do they have a fantastic variety and a alphabetical list that makes it very easy for me to order what I need, but it is CHEAP. Never again will I go to a grocery store and spend $7+ on a jar of expired spices that have been on the shelf for god know how long (and most of that cost is for the jar). At least I know that Market Spice is busy and there is some rotation in the product!
