This place probably does have all the spices in the world. Walking in, it smelled like a spice garden. There were so many spice and tea options to explore. If you head down to the lower floor, you can sample some of their spices with chips or popcorn. They also offer samples of two featured loose teas. I'm embarrassed that I'm only writing my first review today for a shop I have ordered from for 10+ years and also visited for the last 6 years. But no time like the present! This is my favorite online spice store for years. They have the most wonderful spice blends and I am able to create some of my favorite recipes with their spices! The best cauliflower ever? Coat both sides of a cauliflower steak with voodoo seasoning, drizzle olive oil, lemon zest and some Parmesan, roast in oven for 18 minutes at 385° The best!! Their chili crisp oil? Amazing!! So many other great ones! Go in person and smell everything! On my most recent visit I saw they've added some cookbooks! I got an Asian baking cookbook that is phenomenal! Go buy all of Kat Lieu's cookbooks from them! I've made 6 recipes so far - all fabulous! They also have teas, chocolate and more yumminess. Also their staff is the best! I linger FOREVER and ask a million questions and they are so patient, give recommendations and suggestions. If you ever go to Pike Place market wander around the corner to world spice. Just received my treasure trove of fabulous-ness from World Spice! Everything is perfectly packaged and sealed. Everything is even better than expected! YAY! Just saying, parking and "such" in Seattle can be a bit problematic at times so I just go to their website and order from there - PERFECT! Have a question? Poof! They answer it! This review is for the online store, not the location in Seattle. Service and shipping is TERRIBLE. Avoid ordering online, as things can take an extraordinarily long time to arrive. This impacts freshness. I live in Seattle and used to shop the store there but am now mobility impaired. The online store is taking over two weeks for a very basic order. Someone could have literally driven coast to coast in that amount of time. Given their very inflated prices, their lame shipping is a slap on the face. My package is somehow being routed through remote North Carolina? Where is this stuff made, I thought it was a local business, not some offshore operation. Who is doing quality control? read more

Fantastic spice merchant located on Western Ave in the Pike Place Market area. The store is large, clean, and has a variety of options. The staff are friendly, knowledgeable and helpful. All spices are fresh and the variety covers anything you might need. I also found a couple of new spices to try! They can grind spices as well when purchased. The pricing is fair and spices comes in a glass jar. Overall, no complaints here and I'll keep coming back for more spices! read more

Check out the rack(s) on this one! If you find yourself exiting the maze that is Pike Place Market, you'll find this awesome spice merchant one block below, on Western Avenue. Racks on racks of spices, salts, teas and all the associated accoutrement to brew, blend, or season your favorite beverages and dishes. On our first visit, we were able to find some Israeli Za'atar, a spice that is rather hard to come by, in some places. On return visits, we've purchased such exotic supplies such as Korean bulgogi spice, "rooster" (a.k.a. sriracha) salt, garlic habanero salt, black truffle salt, and a half dozen other fun seasonings. On our last outing, we were offered a free sample from a couple choice flavors, to accompany our purchase. Most of the various spice and herb blends run around ~$9-$12 for a standard size jar. Some of the various spice powders run a few bucks per oz. It's easy to get carried away and spend $50 bucks or more (we do pretty much every time), but the quality and variety keeps us coming back for more. Heck, on our last visit, we were actually waiting for our table at a nearby restaurant, bought our spices, went to lunch, and ended up breaking out a couple of the salts to sprinkle on our fries *in the restaurant*. How convenient is that? If you need a little kick to spice up your culinary concoctions, World Spice Merchant is a must-stop, anytime you find yourself near Pike Place. Absolutely love this place. I didn't ever give much thought to buying my spices fresh from a local vendor, even though I cook a lot, until someone turned me onto their chipotle chili flake. Wow. It's absolutely incredible. I already used red pepper flakes in my cooking to make a nice, spicy base to just about everything, and these bring that, plus the best smoky flavor. I use them to finish just about every meal I eat, no exaggeration. Getting spices there is super easy, especially if you're downtown for any reason. They have orders ready to pick up usually next day, and service is fast. The spices smell and look so much more vibrant than whatever you're used to, I assure you. I wish the bulk goods came in something other than plastic, but I understand why. At lest it can be Ridwell'd at home. Their blends are fun too. They have spice mixed inspired by Worcestershire, homemade togarashi blends and more fun stuff. I'd recommend for your first buy to get a mixture of things both familiar and unfamiliar to you, to understand how they shine. read more

I've been shopping at World Spice for years and years and you can't beat the quality of the spices you get here. But what I will say right now is that their policy that started during COVID of only having prepacked and order ahead options is a little frustrating. There's no mask policy in the shop anymore but this other policy is still being used? One of the strengths of World Spice used to be that you could just stop in and get what you need but now it's much more preset even though they obviously still have their bulk containers. I would still definitely recommend, but I am looking forward to them going back to the old way of filling orders. read more

Amazing spice shop. Cozy locations and they stock almost anything you can think of, including asafoetida. My fiance and I had been searching for this for a while and finally found it here. They also carry a bunch of different types of paprika (smoked, spicy, Hungarian), and powdered mushrooms that smell so good they'll make your mouth water. I like the ability to buy your own spices whole or get them ground fresh for you. They also have jars / containers for you to buy for convenient storing. We hadn't intended on buying any, but because it smelled so good, I also picked up their Kashmiri Garam Masala. We may be back to buy their Hazelnut Dukkah too. read more

I used to really enjoy shopping at this store. You could walk through smelling spices, reading to find all kinds of new interesting blends to "spice up" (no pun intended) your cooking routine. Unfortunately it's gone from an "experience" and they have changed things in store purchasing to everything is pre packaged which is frustrating given it creates so much more waste and cost. This made far more sense at the height of covid but there seems to be no intention at the moment of changing back. The only way around this is to order online removing the original experience when going to the market, and taking at least 24 hrs to get your spices. So if you decided to make something day of, have company that comes to town or run out of a spice there is no way around it- except to purchase their pre packaged jars. What I once thought was a temporary adjustment through the pandemic seems to be permanent fixture. I guess I should feel fortunately I spend hundreds less a year as I'm not there purchasing cookbooks, etc and purchase spices more and more elsewhere. read more

I bought the Seattle salmon rub, a vegetarian Indian cookbook, and a book on how herbs and spices can protect against viruses. Such a dreamy place! I had this uncontrollable urge to start cooking right there in the store. Great customer service! The women working there were knowledgeable about the spices and teas from around the world. They threw in a bottle of Indian curry for free. Ha! Like I don't already own a smorgasbord of curries and Indian spices? I appreciate the thought though. My friend and I came in on a Sunday while we were walking around Pike place because it was right next to the parking garage. I was blown away by the variety inside, there were standard spices, and their own unique mixes. I got 4 spice mixes, a pho starter and some chamomile tea. It was a little bit pricy, but I think totally worth it. I spoke the cashier as I was checking out and she gave me all sorts of helpful advice about each blend that I bought and how to use them. If I could make it 0 stars I would. I had over $100 of spices that I had found and wanted to buy, but the customer service was terrible, so I put it all back and left. There were at least 3 associates in various positions around the store. I was in the shop for 20 minutes and all of them looked me in the face and no one said hi, asked if I needed help or even returned my smile. One associate was chatting with a woman, telling her to go ahead and sip her tea and look around. Said lady was leaning in the walkway leading to a large and very steep staircase. I said excuse me and pardon me 3 times and she didn't even budge an inch. Get this I AM 7 months pregnant- NOTICEABLY PREGNANT! As the only Black person or customer of color in the store it really makes you wonder. The ONLY time an associate said anything to me was to ask if I was ready to check out. By this point I had- had enough and had already put the 9 jars of spices away. The only happy people in this equation were oblivious leaning lady and my husband since they seemed to save him some money. Thanks for a great last night Seattle. When I travel now, I love to bring back spices from the places I've gone. I buy herbs, sea salts, various peppers and chilies and I stock up on loose teas. I bring home my goods and make meals for days with my fabulous finds. I was super impressed with the collection of spices at World Spice and used the opportunity to stock up on a collection of things I have never tried or used before. I've made some great meals using the spices I bought here and I am happy I bookmarked it and went. Stopped in to get some spices. Was looking for ground Ginger and Galangal for an Asian dry rub chicken dish I wanted to try. Wow, they have all kinds of herbs and spices, and spice blends. but unfortunately they didn't have the Galangal (sob) This store also carries all kinds of loose teas (not in bags) too. The minimum amounts for spices is generally 1 oz, and the minimum for teas are generally 2 ozs. They also sell all kinds and sizes of spice and tea containers and accessories. While visiting I browsed through a collection of books about spices and herbs, etc. We picked up some ground ginger, rosemary, and Ti Kuan Yin Green Oolong tea. If you haven't visited this shop yet, I'd recommend stopping in when you are looking for some spices, herbs, and/or want to try some new teas. If you do buy some teas, ask for a copy of their Tea Brewing Guide that provides info on the correct water temperature, suggested time to brew the teas and how many steepings. Used to be the best place in Seattle to buy quality spices in bulk. No more. They pre-package everything and it's pretty much the same as buying at a grocery store. Only difference is you can get a bigger variety here. But the days when they used to let you make a list with a little pencil and paper on clipboard and hand it to the clerk are LONG GONE. Sadly. Really great selection on spices. I like their ordering system. They have a limited loose leaf tea offering. Docking stars for the staff. Both I interacted with didn't seem like they wanted anyone to be there, themselves included. I was excited to go and nearly took a special trip up to Seattle to go to this shop specifically (though we did have other places to visit while in the city) but the mannerisms and manners of the staff were incredibly disheartening. Spent $50 on a handful of stale spice/herb blends that were masked with excessive pepper. This place strikes me as a tourist trap that gets away with charging high prices for low quality product because of their location in Pike Place Market. Would have rated one star if it were not for the very helpful and friendly gentleman who helped me out. The other employees were unfortunately not so helpful. As a local I was hoping to replace my former spice merchant of choice with something well...more local but it didn't work out. They sport all sorts of cool salts as well! Who knew there was so many kinds of salt! Alder wood smoked, pink himalayan salt, the list goes on and on! They have a nice system where they give you a pencil and pad to write down your own order. You than give the your slip and they fill your order for you. They also have a tea area in the lower level. It appeared like they may have tea tasting from time to time but this place focuses on the spices. No one was manning the tea area so I no tea was tasted on this visit. Bulk prices here are better than going to major chains stores. Folks here also seemed very friendly with good tips. read more

I fancy this shop because I can get just about every spice I use on a regular basis and I can get it ground if need be. I always end up purchasing a new-to-me spice and today I ended up with six new-to-me spices and salts. Cory, the fine gentleman who patiently and humorously helped me, is responsible for this. I came in looking for a few, very specific, items and to browse. The cafe downstairs is definitely someplace I would love to disappear into and spend all day reading books, drinking tea, and giving away my entire paycheck before I even got to their spice walls. Unfortunately, it was not in service--im not sure if it's open often, or only for special events--but I wanted to be there--though it did seem to be exclusively Tea teas and not a lot of herbals that would have competed with tenzig momo. They did not have the specific items I was looking for, though there was a good selection of common to moderate spices, however maybe less than an intimidatingly stocked spice merchant in the international district. There's a lot of attention given to blends, which I tend to be suspicious of (control freak). The ones that I did pick up definitely look to be of good quality. Though I used them yet and will update when I do. It definitely is a worthwhile trip to take, and if they had their cafe open, I would have left feeling like I had "come home". Wow! Was drawn in by the wonderful aroma lilting through the door and could have stayed for hours if it wasn't for that pesky parking meter. Oooh, what culinary delights you will find here! For example, I thought I'd just get an ounce of star anise, and I found out there is such a delectable thing as "black lava flake salt". Can't wait to conjure up something to put that onto... The Market actually had 12 Sea Salts to choose from, including Utah Basin Salt. [ Ever driven to the Rockies? You can see the desert sparkling on the way to Utah, it's salt crystals. ] Another great thing I saw there was a Mongolian Tea Brick. It's a way of transporting tea easily into the mountains and hard-to-reach areas. You take a chunk of the tea and boil it (usually with Yak fat!). Be sure to check it out if you go- it's downstairs in the little tea room, along with some books, grinders, tea accessories, etc. More gleeful finds were countless jars of curry powders! Yum yum. Never seen so many in one place- and from so many countries ! There were great descriptions of what makes each one different, where their names came from, etc. I looked at their website when I got home, but there are many more at the shop. It's worth a trip! Just go if you're nearby- they sell airtight jars for 2 bucks, so stop in on a whim. You'll definitely find something you like & can go back to get more later. read more

Excellent place to get your flavorful, fresh spices. I was really inspired to start my own spice collection after coming here for some more unique spices that would be harder to find in your local grocery store. Elle was the one who helped me out in that past year, but I guess she has moved on. She was very knowledgeable, and the staff aren't necessarily the "bubbliest" but they are all very sweet and easygoing. I'm not sure why there are so many negative reviews about their customer service. When I go shopping, I'm usually looking for an item, not validation lol. I will be going back and restocking, but will be sure to try a variety of spices in their variegated collection. read more

This place is awesome and a half! Walking into this place is like walking into an adult candy store. There are dozens of spice jars along the walls for you to gawk at and smell. Each jar contains 1 ounce of each item. There is a nice little library on the lower level. It's cramped, and the wait can be a little long to get your order filled, but it's worth the wait. The owner of the store even created their own spice bible that they sell there. All of their staff members are incredibly knowledgeable, and they conduct spice demonstrations on the weekends. You can find more info on their Facebook page. They sell the Spice Care system as well. One of their clients came up with the design of the Spice Care system. We purchased about 100 bottles and put them on an 18" lazy Susan for our kitchen. It's awesome! Their prices are incredibly reasonable, and their ingredients are so fresh. You know how grocery stores charge anywhere from $10-14 for one old vanilla bean in a jar? They're $3.50 here, and they're much fresher. Their website is very extensive at listing all their spices, the form they come in, and their prices. They deal with such a large quantity of spices, so their turnover is very fast. Some of the spices are so fresh, you need less of them. I've actually ruined a couple of dishes by over estimating the potency of some of their spices like white pepper. In addition to spices, they also sell a large variety of teas. They also sell Himalayan sea salt planks and chunks for finishing salts. Their spice blends are phenomenal too. They do have a 2 oz minimum on all their spice blends. Their Cuban spice blend is really great and even used at Paseo's. Their Chipotle spice blend is definitely one of my favorites. If you are going to become a regular at this pace, you should also invest in a simple coffee grinder. They can grind their spices at their store for you, but they will last longer if you grind them at home yourself. I also recently found out that they are excellent at recreating spice blends that clients bring in. You know that favorite barbecue rub that you can only get in Texas? Or that enchilada sauce spice? That steak spice from your favorite steak house? Bring it in, and they can recreate it for you! I now refuse to shop at any grocery store for any spice beyond Morton's Kosher salt - unless it's an emergency and this place is closed. They did start accepting credit cards now, so that's a plus. read more

I love coming here. I shove my nose in all the jars and huff every damn spice and blend they have out. I always leave with my nose tickling and recipe ideas swimming through my head. The jars themselves are "display only" -- you make a note of what you want and the lovely/friendly staff here will get you your set amount all fresh and lovely like. Samples shown are all 1 oz offerings, so you have a good idea how far your $ will take you. Prices are pretty ridiculously reasonable here. I only drop tons of cash here cuz I always leave with more than I really need. Books, pestles, and teas are also here. But it really comes down to their awesome spice selection. They have just about anything you could want and then some, all great quality. Why bother with those crappy dried spices at the supermarket when you can come here for less and better? What a fun spot to shop for spices! Much has already been said about the vast selection at World Spice and I am also impressed. I think you could find any spice you could possibly want here. To demonstrate their span of products they have at least 10 different blends of curry powder! They also have many in-house blends such as Herbs de Provence, Habanero Garlic, and Seattle Salmon spice to name a few. Prices seem pretty reasonable. The only downside is the line can get backed up and the wait time can be at least 15+ minutes even if you're just purchasing a couple spices. No other word for this store but amazing. They offer spices, rubs and teas in one of the most visually arresting and accessible layouts I've ever seen. Check out the photos for proof. The store itself is on the backside street behind the Market (Western) so not exactly the easiest to just stumble upon like so many other shops in the area, but beyond worth it to make a visit. I spent about twenty minutes just reading all the labels and learning about the spices offered. And of course smelling everything. World Spice makes for a great educational field trip around the world! When one of the employees asked if I needed help I complimented the store and he replied that it's really fun if you like to cook, to which I replied "I actually don't, I just like smells and I'm having a great time!", then asked for a recommendation on what spices I should buy just to enjoy smelling. If he thought this was a weird request, he didn't show it at all and his colleague got really excited about my "aromatherapy idea" upon check-out which was sweet. Their online ordering option is so, so tempting, but I refuse to give in to it. Why? Because actually going to this place is a wonderful experience in and of itself. Enough to prompt me to make the trip up to Seattle from my home in Portland far more often than my bank account feels I should. The staff members have always been incredibly helpful and full of amazing suggestions. When they caught me inhaling their bins of loose chai, they offered to brew me a cup of whatever I was eyeing to help me make a decision. One fateful day I tried their Chipotle Chai and I've never, ever found another chai that can make me stray from this. It's the kind of cup of chai to savor, share with someone you love, or have a private moment with as you inhale the aroma and let your eyes roll back in their sockets. Perfection. I've also scored a number of other amazing things here. Mexican cocoa mix, amazing spice blends, and large quantities of whole spices including old favorites and new experiences. Prices are extremely reasonable and they have a lovely selection of tea-brewing implements, tea sets, and other useful tools. Do yourself a favor and smell EVERYTHING at least twice. read more

THE GOOD This store has a wonderful selection of teas and spices, nice stock and beautiful displays of spices in glass jars. They provide a lot of written information in organized little cards, with info on the spice's provenance and suggestions on how to use them. They also catalog the spices into categories like "Asian" "African" and "Latin American" for those looking for specific spices for different cuisines. THE BAD Poor customer service. I walked around for about 15 minutes, looking around, making my selection. There was only one more customer there - the lady on the counter was talking to him. There was a grumpy looking older gentleman stocking spices, and another person at the computer. The entire time I was there not a single employee said hi, smiled, or even acknowledged my presence. THE REALLY BAD When I was ready with my selection I stood on line behind the other customer and waited. And waited. I must have waited for another 10 minutes, and that is not an exaggeration. The lady at the counter could have said "All set there? I'll be with you in a minute". But she just ignored me and continued talking to the other customer. THE REALLY, REALLY BAD At some point while I was waiting some stupified tourists peaked trough the window. The lady at the counter waved at them and said out loud: "It is OK to come in!", yet she continued to ignore me - and I was standing almost in front of her! There is NO way she couldn't see me. THE REALLY, REALLY, REALLY BAD When it was finally my turn the counter lady mildly chastised me - "OH, you are not supposed to remove the jars. Just tell me what you need". I told her I wanted some Cascabel Chiles. She told me they were out of my selection, but suggested I go to Pike's place to find whatever I wanted at the Latin Market. The display jar I had placed at the counter had a few of the chiles I wanted. In reality that is all I needed but why bother to ask for them? It was so obvious they didn't want my business. I said thank you and left. I see all the glowing reviews and I'm saddened. Some how I was not worthy of that service and a positive experience, and I feel it was not through fault of my own. Making *some* of your costumers feel INVISIBLE is just plain wrong and unkind. If you don't want Mexicans shopping at your store just say so. I would have skipped this store and I would have gone straight to the Latin Market. I don't care if my review is "filtered" or removed, I just wanted to get this off my chest. I don't carry things around but I recently found their business card. I am a food blogger and the place had been highly recommended by a friend from Seattle. I just feel like I wasted 30 minutes of my life that I'll never get back. I could have used those minutes visiting your fair city. Shame on you, WSM. read more
